Full textThe objective of this project is to study the effects of plasma treatment on the surface characteristics and the in-vitro degradation properties of polylactic acid (PLA) for different applications such as biodegradable cardiovascular stents. Polymer films are treated by two different dielectric barrier discharge plasma. The carrier and oxidative gas mixtures in these reactors are argon+water vapor and nitrogen+nitrous oxide. Both the treated and non-treated PLA samples are characterized by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy, surface energy, and contact angle analysis. Additionally, the aging behavior of the surfaces after each treatment is investigated. In-vitro hydrolytic degradation studies are conducted by measurements of mass loss and molecular weight loss as a function of the incubation time. The results indicate that the PLA surface becomes more hydrophilic in all the treated samples. Increased hydrophilicity is associated with modifications to the chemical composition of the treated surfaces. Also, analysis of the surface morphology shows that the argon and water vapor plasma induces the formation of some nodule-like structures on the surface. All the treated surfaces undergo hydrophobic recovery to some extent due to the rearrangement of the polar groups into the bulk. Moreover, in-vitro degradation studies show that plasma treatments do not affect the PLA hydrolytic degradation properties.

Full textThe aim of this work is to characterize in detail fluorinated plasmas as CHF3/Ar, CF4/Ar and especially plasmas SF6/Ar and their interaction with silica glasses during an etching process devoted to microfluidic devices fabrication. First of all, we studied the electrical properties and the plasma kinetics by adopting an approach combining experiment and modeling. Thus, plasma diagnostics by mass spectrometry, Langmuir probes, optical emission spectroscopy were carried out. In parallel with this experimental study, we developed a global kinetic model to quantify the densities of neutral and charged species and the density and the electron temperature in various conditions of SF6/Ar discharge. The model results were validated with experimental results. Then etch rate and roughness measurements as well as surface analysis (XPS, AFM, SEM) were carried out after etching in SF6/Ar and CHF3/Ar plasmas. We show that decreasing the pressure and increasing the percentage of argon improve etching by increasing the etch rate of silica glass containing the most metal oxides and reducing surface roughness. Implementation for trench etching is successfully tested. Finally, the multi-scale modeling of plasma-surface interaction shows that the etch rate depends on the percentage of metal content in the glasses and the sputtering yield of metal sites. The roughness is due to the redeposition of metal species on the surface of the glass

Full textStandard sterilization methods such as autoclave, ethylene oxide or irradiation can affect the biocompatibility of medical devices, especially those sensitive to heat or chemicals products. Numerous studies have demonstrated the possibility to use low pressure plasmas as an alternative sterilization process: low process temperature, treatment time competitive to autoclave and without any toxic agent. However, the sterile state preservation is still a problem. In the framework of the ANR PLAS'STER project, this CIFRE thesis focus on a new sterilization process development based on low pressure cold plasmas. The innovation resides in the creation and the confinement of a plasma inside a sterilization bag, thereby ensuring the conservation of the sterile state. The first part was dedicated to the physical characterization of the plasmas discharges confined inside the bag of sterilization. Secondly, the bactericidal efficiency of the process was demonstrated on Gram negative and Gram positive bacteria according to the EN556 standard. Additional tests on E. coli lead to hypothesis on the sterilization mechanisms and opened tracks on the optimization of our process. Finally, the properties analysis of biomaterials demonstrated the absence of macromolecular modifications and validated the potentiality of the process PLAS' STER as the sterilization method alternative

Full textOne of the greatest challenges for humanity in this century is the fight against the constant increase of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, in particular carbon dioxide CO2. Declining or stabilizing these emissions by developing innovative solutions in order to capture and transform (CCU) the inevitably gas produced CO2 are major challenges for the next decades. Here in this study, we will focus on the CO2 methanation reaction (Sabatier reaction) as a promising approach for CO2 reduction since the generated methane can be readily stored in the existing gas network or used as raw materials for valuable chemical production. By avoiding the critical conditions of high temperatures and pressure needed in conventional thermal approach and intersecting the requirements for flexible production by renewable energy can be achieved by combining plasma technology with catalysis. Despite the fact that the general principles of plasma catalysis are described, it is yet a new field of research with many unsolved aspects to be discovered. Hence, in this work, we will attempt to show some of these aspects by studying the impact of promotional effects on plasma properties in a packed bed Dielectric Barrier Discharge “DBD” plasma reactor, which allow to highlight the synergy between plasma and the catalyst. This PhD thesis as a multidisciplinary study, first will focus on the effect of promoters and their optimum loading on Ni/CeO2 catalyst for the CO2 methanation reaction in the presence of the plasma. In the second step this series of catalysts will be intentionally supported on HUSY zeolites to investigate the effect of physicochemical properties of the zeolite-based catalyst on the energy efficiency of CO2 methanation. This work will grant a new methodology to select the most appropriate zeolite-based catalysts in terms of energy efficiency for DBD plasma catalytic CO2 methanation. Under this way, we hope to open new insights to further improve the synergy between the plasma and the packing material, in order to help with the transition towards a sustainable future
