AbstractThis manuscript narrates a pedagogic experience in a Furniture Design course at the American University in the Emirates (AUE). Senior students enrolled in the Interior Design Program tackled a studio project which was about designing a piece of furniture inspired by a pavilion of their choice pertaining to Dubai World Expo 2020. The direct learning outcomes were assessed through technical drawings and three-dimensional printed physical models scaled one tenth proceeded by real scale prototypes of the chairs. The indirect outcomes are considering these material objects, the furniture items, as tools of memory, holding symbolic and cultural connotations. The design process would allow a space of reflection on contemporary practices and rethink prototypes as tools for analysis and research. Beyond functionality and aesthetics, objects become means of communicating personal findings, translating urban, architectural, cultural, and social attributes. This research will demonstrate through combined research strategies how products of the real and the imaginary give material form to memory.

Gilbert Ryle’s dispositional analysis of the concept of intelligence makes the error of assimilating intelligence to the category of dispositional or semi-dispositional concepts. Far from being a dispositional concept, intelligence is an episodic concept that refers neither to dispositions nor to ‘knowing how,’ but to a fashion or style of proceeding whose significance is adverbial. Being derivative from the function of the adverb ‘intelligently,’ the concept of intelligence does not have essential reference to specific verbs but rather to the manner or style of proceeding of nearly any verb that is descriptive of the proceedings of an agent. Intelligence- words are expressive of a manner of doing things that may be narrated in one of two ways. The first takes the form of a series of contrasts which, when put together as a list of disjuncts, may be called the contrast-criteria of intelligence. The second may take the form of the characteristic activities which comprise the criteria of intelligence.

Abstract Chapter 5 addresses Muhammad’s confrontations with the Jews of Medina and its neighboring settlements. Through traditions, Muslim narrators designed an image of a rival religious community to the Muslims upon their arrival in Medina. The Jews are displayed as ungrateful and disingenuous, as they rejected Muhammad and his prophethood. The Muslim-Jewish tension appears as inherently religious, but it soon crystallized into a tribal military combat. The chapter examines the raids against three major tribes in Medina and two nearby Jewish settlements. These stories are a product of medieval traditionists who likely sought to encourage an anti-Jewish disposition that is arguably more suitable for later generations living in the conquered lands. Additionally, historiographical reports appear to be shaped by the narrators to interpret Islam’s Scripture, particularly advancing anti-Jewish sentiments. Historical narratives are not only written but rewritten, tweaked, and adjusted to correspond to changing religious, social, and political necessities.

Abstract:
Im Beitrag wird die Bedeutung habitueller Dispositionen für die Studienwahl angehender Kindergarten- und Primarlehrpersonen in der Schweiz aus einer praxeologisch-strukturtheoretischen Perspektive untersucht. Mittels Sequenzanalytischer Habitusrekonstruktion wurden die narrativ-episodischen Eingangsinterviews der TriLAN-Studie (Trajektorien in den Lehrberuf Adressierungspraktiken und Narrationen im Studium zur Kindergarten- und Primarlehrperson) rekonstruiert und durch die Kontrastierung der Fälle eine Typologie der impliziten Passungsherstellung aufgestellt. Es wird argumentiert, dass eine implizite Passungsherstellung in Gestalt der vier aufgestellten Typen ein zentrales Erzeugungsprinzip der Studienwahlpraxis von Lehrpersonen im Kontext heterogener Berufsbiographien darstellt. Die Ergebnisse erweitern nicht nur das Verständnis der Studien- und Berufswahl von Lehrpersonen, sondern fundieren auch die weitere Untersuchung habitueller Dispositionen im Studienverlauf.
