Abstract:
El objetivo de este trabajo es desarrollar un dispositivo capaz de monitorizar a una persona que se encuentre en peligro o en extravío, además de un medio de alerta para notificar en caso que la persona requiera de ayuda inmediata. Los componentes utilizados en este proyecto son de muy bajo costo, lo que lo hace mas atractivo en comparación con otros dispositivos de monitorización satelital. Otra de las ventajas de este proyecto es la flexibilidad de uso, ya que puede ser adaptado a diversas áreas, desde seguridad hasta monitorización de salud, y gracias a la libertad que nos ofrece la plataforma Arduino, es posible explotar al máximo el potencial de todos los datos obtenidos. En esta investigación mostramos los avances iniciales dentro de este dispositivo, y los retos a futuro.

Abstract:
Se realizó el diseño y construcción de un prototipo de comunicación inalámbrica para la georreferenciación y generación de alertas, compuesto por: Nodo Sensor, Nodo Router y Nodo Coordinador. La red fue estructurada con la topología tipo malla, que permite obtener la información de georreferenciación, velocidad, altura obtenidas del GPS y las alertas generadas por el usuario. Se desarrolló una aplicación en el paquete Visual Studio Community que permite al administrador ingresar la información de los portadores a una base de datos al igual que el recorrido de manera automática, mostrándolo en un mapa georreferenciado, la interfaz gráfica permite la búsqueda de la información almacenada y su exportación. Se demostró que el prototipo implementado puede cubrir 500m2 en terreno montañoso y 4500m2 en terreno plano con una potencia de recepción entre -72.3 dBm y -75.9 dBm mostrando un margen de recepción entre 28.7 dB a 25.1 dB. La red tiene una capacidad de 128 dispositivos cubriendo el 213% de la capacidad actual requerida. El dispositivo GPS presenta un error de ubicación de ± 2.5 metros, de velocidad de ± 0.1 m/s y de altura de ± 20 metros demostrando que el prototipo no incorpora error a los sensores. La autonomía energética es de 16 horas cubriendo el 400% del tiempo normal del recorrido de un visitante. Se concluye que el prototipo implementado puede convertirse en una herramienta de ayuda para facilitar la ubicación de personas que requieran auxilio dentro de la Reserva cumpliendo así los objetivos nacionales sobre seguridad.

El posicionamiento en tiempo real usando GPS se hace mediante correcciones diferenciales enviadas desde una estación base hacia un receptor móvil. Generalmente, la corrección es enviada vía radio o por medio de satélites de comunicación. Con el desarrollo del internet inalámbrica y con el aumento de la cobertura de la señal mediante un Protocolo, conocido como IP, han hecho que se integren estas tecnologías para realizar mediciones para trabajos y estudios en tiempo real usando la tecnología GPS, y mediante el protocolo NTRIP. Esta técnica se ha estado desarrollando e implementando de forma constante en la región, siendo el presente y futuro de las mediciones para trabajos de precisión y en tiempo real. En este trabajo, se muestra la implementación de la técnica NTRIP para posicionamiento en tiempo real. El acceso a datos brutos del GPS en un móvil ANDROID y un navegador Mobile Mapper 10, la utilización de NTRIP para el envió de correcciones diferenciales por medio del protocolo IP, y el internet como red de información inmediata, fueron la base general para crear una aplicación que utiliza una corrección diferencial por posición. Los primeros resultados muestran una mejoría en la posición, pudiendo llegar a obtener un error medio de 2.3m en una Tablet con Android, y 1.6 m con el Mobile Mapper 10; en un tiempo de 5 minutos

En este artículo se explica los efectos relativistas en el Sistema de Posicionamiento Global (GPS); se analiza las correcciones debido a la Relatividad Especial y a la Relatividad General. Aunque los efectos gravitacionales son débiles y las velocidades pequeñas, sin embargo generan efectos relativistas significativos. Si dichos efectos no se tienen en cuenta, se producirían errores en la medicion del tiempo y en la posición del dispositivo GPS (en el orden de los 11.5 km).

O presente projeto visa a criao de diretrizes para o desenvolvimento de um aplicativo GPS para dispositivos mveis voltado para ciclistas de Curitiba. Com o crescente uso da bicicleta como meio de transporte em uma cidade saturada de veculos e tambm a popularizao do uso de smartphones, um sistema de navegao GPS pode tornar o trajeto mais rpido e seguro ao inform-lo a respeito das vias ciclsticas e vias alternativas da cidade, e tambm dos principais pontos de seu interesse (parques, universidades, bicicletrios e outros). O projeto identifica o perfil do ciclista de Curitiba (necessidades, dificuldades e comportamentos em relao ao uso da bicicleta e de GPS); analiza a infraestrutura urbana cicloviria atravs de documentos pblicos (incluindo projetos de ampliao); analiza os produtos similares mais usados pelo ciclistas; apura e converge os resultados dessas pesquisas iniciais; e por fim, prope diretrizes para a elaborao da interface aplicativo.

Kajian tekstual maupun kontekstual di masyarakat masih menunjukkan terdapat ketimpangan peran gender, misalnya pada sebagian masyarakat muslim yang melihat perempuan posisinya lebih rendah daripada laki-laki dikarenakan penafsiran yang kurang tepat terhadap Alquran dan Hadis. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui pengaruh: (1) pemahaman gender terhadap civic disposition, (2) sensitivitas gender terhadap civic disposition, dan (3) pemahaman gender dan sensitivitas gender terhadap civic disposition pada peserta didik Madrasah Aliyah di Kabupaten Bantul. Penelitian menggunakan pendekatan kuantitatif. Populasi adalah peserta didik Madrasah Aliyah di Kabupaten Bantul. Teknik sampelnya adalah simple random sampling. Instrumen pengumpul data berupa skala pemahaman gender (SPG), skala sensitivitas gender (SSG) dan skala civic disposition (SCD). Uji validitas menggunakan validitas konstruk dan isi, sedangkan untuk mengukur konsistensi internal pada SPG menggunakan point biserial, sedangkan SSG dan SCG dengan menghitung daya beda menggunakan r-product moment. Reliabilitas SPG dihitung dengan KR-20 sedangkan SSG dan SCD dengan Alpha Cronbach. Hasil penelitian adalah sebagai berikut. (1) Pemahaman gender dapat mempengaruhi civic disposition. (2) Sensitivitas gender mempengaruhi civic disposition sebesar 2,3%. Selain variabel pemahaman gender, sensitivitas gender juga berpengaruh pada civic dispositions. (3) Pemahaman dan sensitivitas gender secara bersama-sama dapat mempengaruhi civic disposition sebesar 74%. Artinya, variabel pemahaman dan sensitivitas gender berpengaruh pada civic disposition, setiap perubahan pada kedua variabel bebas akan mempengaruhi pada civic disposition sebesar 77,3%.[Textual and contextual studies in the society keep showing that there are inequalities in gender roles, for example in some of the Muslim societies, they think that women are inferior to men because of inappropriate interpretations of the Koran and Hadith. Understanding gender principles are obtained by humans at all ages and also from the various environments in which they interact. Adolescence is an important age level in the process of forming a gender principle. This research aims to understand the influences: (1) the gender understanding toward civic disposition; (2) the gender sensitivity toward civic disposition; and (3) the gender understanding and gender sensitivity toward civic disposition of the Madrasah Aliyah’s students in Bantul Regency. The research uses the quantitative approach and random sampling technique. The instruments of data collecting are gender awareness scale (GAS), gender sensitivity scale (GSS) and civic disposition scale (CDS). The validity test uses the construct and content’s validity, while to measure the internal consistency of the GAS uses the biserial point on GSS and CDS because it measures noncognitive structures by calculating the power of discrimination through an r-product moment. The GAS reliability is calculated by using KR-20 while that of the GSS and DCS use Alpha Cronbach. The results of the reliability measurement show that 0.524 for GAS, 0.756 for GSS and 0.882 for CDS. The prerequisite test is executed by measuring the normality distribution using Kolmogorov-Smirnov analysis and homogeneity test of Levene, while the linearity test was calculated through the F-regression value. The hypothesis test uses the data of simple regression and double regression. The results of this research are: (1) Understanding of gender affects civic disposition. (2) Gender sensitivity affects civic disposition. (3) Understanding gender and gender sensitivity at the same time affect civic disposition. Therefore, it could be concluded that both gender understanding and gender sensitivity can affect civic disposition.]

Introducción: esta publicación es el producto de una investigación del grupo de investigación de computación avanzada y en gran escala (Cage) de la Universidad Industrial de Santander, a lo largo de 2018. Objetivo: Se propone un algoritmo de posicionamiento cooperativo en el que un conjunto de dispositivos intercambia observables satelitales, y estimaciones de distancia entre dispositivos GPS cercanos, con el objetivo de aumentar su precisión de posicionamiento. Metodología: se establecen escenarios donde los receptores de GPS intercambian información satelital, y utilizan diferentes modelos de corrección ionosférica con el fin de evaluar las condiciones en que es posible mejorar la precisión en posicionamiento. Conclusiones: El algoritmo propuesto produce una mayor precisión cuando todos los receptores emplean el mismo modelo de corrección ionosférica. Además, el nivel de incertidumbre en la medida de distancia entre dispositivos no presenta mayor influencia sobre la mejora de la precisión, cuando la separación entre receptores es muy grande. Originalidad: el algoritmo propuesto permite explotar la naturaleza del problema sin aumentar la complejidad a nivel de hardware y software, y se ofrece como una alternativa de solución de posicionamiento cooperativo de bajo costo. Limitación: Los resultados exponen la ejecución del algoritmo cooperativo utilizando archivos Rinex de estaciones de referencia gnss. Por lo tanto, para los escenarios en que la distancia de separación entre estaciones es muy alta, los niveles de error en posicionamiento pueden ser elevados.

Lo studio effettuato raccoglie informazioni al fine di svolgere un’analisi globale delle tecniche attualmente in uso, o in fase di studio, nel campo della localizzazione di dispositivi all’interno di un ambiente chiuso, ovvero laddove non è possibile sfruttare la copertura del sistema GPS. La panoramica è frutto dell’analisi e dello studio di paper tecnici pubblicati dai collaboratori dell’IEEE, fruibili all’interno del portale IEEE Xplore. A corredo di questo studio è stata sviluppata una applicazione per dispositivi Android basata sulla tecnica del Wi-Fi fingerprint; l’applicazione, che rappresenta un primo approccio alle tecniche di localizzazione, è a tutti gli effetti un sistema standalone per la localizzazione, consente cioè di costruire sia la mappa per la localizzazione, partendo da un ambiente sconosciuto, sia di ottenere la posizione dell’utente all’interno di una mappa conosciuta. La tesi si conclude con una analisi dei risultati e delle performance ottenute dall’applicazione in un uso comune, al fine di poter valutare l’efficacia della tecnica presa in considerazione. I possibili sviluppi futuri sono analizzati in un capitolo a parte e trovano spazio in ambienti nei quali si vogliono offrire servizi "context-based", ovvero basati sulla posizione esatta dell’utente.

Questo elaborato è stato strutturato in 3 diversi capitoli, nel capitolo 1 sono presentate informazioni generali su: che cosa sia un sistema GPS, come funzioni, i suoi principali errori e alcune implementazioni. Il capitolo 2 riguarda i sistemi GPS indoor di nuova tecnologia e le loro applicazioni. Mentre il capitolo 3 racchiude una analisi di alcuni studi, che riguarda l'utilità della raccolta dati, tramite sistemi GPS nell'ambito sportivo. In particolare nella prima parte si studia la validità e l'affidabilità delle misure GPS considerando l'evoluzione delle unità GPS stesse con l'aumento di frequenza di campionamento. Una volta verificati questi parametri, sono stati presi in considerazione nella seconda parte la raccolta di alcuni studi, riguardanti il monitoraggio dell'attività fisica di individui comuni in relazione all'ambiente in cui si trovano. Verificandone la qualità dei dati tramite lo studio della quantità dei dati persi. Infine nell'ultima parte viene focalizzata la ricerca sulle diverse variabili misurabili con il GPS: distanza totale, distanza relativa, velocità e carico sul corpo degli atleti, e come esse cambiano in relazione ai ruoli, alla competitività e all'età. Quest'ultima analisi è sviluppata nel contesto di vari sport di squadra.

L’elaborato analizza il lavoro svolto nella progettazione di un impianto di generazione e stoccaggio di idrogeno, finalizzato allo studio del processo e dei dispositivi che lo compongono. Per spiegare le ragioni che hanno portato allo sviluppo di questa tesi, nel primo capitolo si fornisce una panoramica sull’evoluzione della tematica del riscaldamento globale e sugli enti internazionali che si stanno impegnando a risolverla. In quest’ottica l’idrogeno, come affermato dal sito ufficiale dell’unione europea, sembra poter essere” la chiave per raggiungere gli ambiziosi traguardi prefissati per la salvaguardia del clima”, con un conseguente forte aumento di investimenti nel settore. Nel secondo capitolo si fornisce una panoramica delle principali tecnologie e conoscenze inerenti all’argomento, descrivendo in breve le diverse soluzioni commerciali per i moduli di elettrolizzazione, di compressione e stoccaggio. Al fine di caratterizzare adeguatamente l’impianto, oggetto di studio, si è affrontata una ricerca per analizzare lo stato dell’arte di altre tecnologie nel settore, descritto attraverso i KPI (Key Performance Indicators) secondo le linee guida fornite dall’EERA (European Energy Research Alliance). Si è analizzata poi la natura del gas idrogeno al fine di giustificare le scelte progettuali svolte nell’impianto, quanto le norme che ne regolano l’impiego. Nel terzo capitolo si entra nel dettaglio del progetto. Il capitolo fornisce una panoramica del funzionamento dell’impianto e della strumentazione di misura utilizzata quanto una descrizione del principio di funzionamento e di trasmissione del segnale al quadro elettrico. L’elaborato si concentra infine sul principio di funzionamento del circuito elettrico del modulo di compressione dove viene presentata un’analisi dettagliata.

Abstract:
Depuis une décennie, une nouvelle classe de matériaux a suscité un très vif intérêt dans le monde de la recherche et ceci dans plusieurs secteurs de la physique. Il s'agit des structures périodiques diélectriques ou métalliques, rencontrées sous les appellations " cristaux photoniques " ou " matériaux à gaps de photon ", qui présentent des états photoniques structurés en bandes interdites et passantes. Ces travaux de thèse ont consisté dans un premier temps à étudier les propriétés physiques de ces matériaux et, dans un deuxième temps, à aborder leurs potentielles exploitations pour des applications dans les domaines des hyperfréquences et de l'optique. Dans la plupart des cas, des simulations électromagnétiques ont été menées pour étudier et concevoir des dispositifs de filtrage ou de guidage dédiés à ces domaines accompagnées d'une réflexion sur les développements technologiques associés. L'étude de réseaux métalliques bi- et tridimensionnels a permis d'analyser le comportement de ces structures utilisées en guide d'onde ou en cavité résonnante et d'introduire l'idée novatrice d'accordabilité basée sur l'insertion de composants actifs permettant le contrôle électrique de leurs propriétés de transmission. Les propriétés de sélectivité angulaire de ces matériaux ont ensuite été exploitées pour l'amélioration des caractéristiques de rayonnement d'antennes. Citons, à titre d'exemple, la conception d'un réflecteur parabolique diélectrique à géométrie plane. Enfin, la structuration périodique bidimensionnelle d'hétérostructures semiconductrices a été exploitée pour la réalisation de dispositifs optiques permettant le couplage directif et sélectif en longueur d'onde de l'énergie électromagnétique pour des applications dans les réseaux multicolores.

Ao longo dos anos, o posicionamento por satélites artificiais através da geotecnologia Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) e, principalmente, por meio do sistema americano Global Positioning System (GPS), ganhou importante espaço na área de Geomática. A qualidade das soluções está diretamente relacionada, entre outros fatores, ao tipo de receptor utilizado no trabalho: dispositivos mais caros (geodésicos), capazes de gerar as portadoras L1 e L2 ou L1, L2 e L5, produzem os melhores resultados; por outro lado, receptores topográficos que rastreiam apenas a frequência L1 são mais baratos, mas tornam o processamento dos dados dependente de um modelo ionosférico para reduzir parcialmente os efeitos dessa origem. Visando melhorar as soluções de posicionamento com dispositivos de baixo custo e evitar despesas adicionais do usuário que, eventualmente, necessitaria de utilizar aparelhos mais onerosos, este trabalho tem como objetivo principal propor a implementação de uma Rede Neural Artificial (RNA) para estimar as observações da portadora L2 do sistema GPS com base nas observáveis da L1, buscando-se também aprimorar o método de predição destes dados elaborado em outras pesquisas. Para tanto, selecionou-se um modelo de rede através da técnica de Validação Cruzada (CV), estimaram-se as observações a partir das rastreadas tanto em um receptor geodésico como em um smartphone Android, e comparou-se a acurácia das soluções que foram processadas com e sem as observáveis artificiais criadas pela RNA. A técnica CV demonstrou que uma Multilayer Perceptron (MLP) de quatro camadas escondidas e outra de uma camada intermediária são as configurações mais apropriadas para estimação das observáveis do código e da fase da portadora L2, respectivamente. O tempo de aprendizagem em todos os experimentos não ultrapassou poucos segundos e o processamento dos arquivos RINEX de dupla frequência, criados neste trabalho, revelou melhorias significativas das soluções de posicionamento na maioria dos testes, reduzindo os desvios planos e espaciais em torno de 40 a 50% em relação aos resultados atingidos com apenas os dados originais da portadora L1, sendo que em alguns experimentos foi possível realizar a combinação iono-free (L3) e em outros atender a normativa de georreferenciamento de imóveis rurais do Instituto Nacional de Colonização e Reforma Agrária (INCRA). Os resultados apontam, portanto, que a proposta metodológica da presente investigação atua de forma bastante promissora e como uma alternativa ao uso de receptores mais caros.
Over the years, positioning by artificial satellites through the Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) and, mainly, through the American Global Positioning System (GPS), has become increasingly important in Geomatics. The quality of the solutions is directly related, among other factors, to the receiver type used in the work: more expensive (geodetic) devices, capable of generating the carriers L1 and L2 or L1, L2 and L5, produce the best results; conversely, topographic receivers which only trace the L1 frequency are cheaper, but make data processing dependent on an ionospheric model to partially reduce the effects of that source. In order to improve the positioning solutions with low cost devices and avoid additional financial costs to the user who would ultimately need to use more expensive devices, the main objective of this work is to propose the implementation of an Artificial Neural Network (ANN) to estimate the GPS L2 observations from the L1 observables, aiming also to improve the prediction method elaborated in other research. This was done by using the Cross-Validation (CV) technique to select a network model. The observations were estimated from observables tracked on both a geodetic receiver and an Android smartphone, and we compared the accuracy of the solutions that were processed with and without the artificial observations created by the ANN. The CV technique demonstrated that a Multilayer Perceptron (MLP) of four hidden layers and another of an intermediate layer are the most appropriate configurations for the estimation of the L2 code and phase observables, respectively. The learning time in all the tests did not exceed a few seconds and the processing of the dual frequency RINEX files, which were created in this work, revealed significant improvements in the positioning solutions in all the experiments. The plane and spatial deviations were reduced by around 40% to 50% in relation to the results obtained with only the original L1 carrier data. In some tests it was possible to perform the iono-free combination (L3) and in others to meet the georeferencing regulations for rural properties of the National Institute of Colonization and Agrarian Reform (INCRA). The results indicate, therefore, that the methodological proposal of the present investigation acts in a very promising way and as an alternative to the use of more expensive receivers.

In August 1944 American troops entered Paris and pushed to liberate France. The French endured hardships and suffering to achieve liberation, and after the violence had passed, they were subjected to privations, requisitions, shortages, cold homes, and curbs on their sovereignty. Living with the American presence posed challenges for the French, and while the two countries did not always see eye to eye on issues of common concern, these issues offered possibilities to work together; accord and cooperation often won out. In The Struggle for Cooperation: Liberated France and the American Military,1944–1946, author Robert Fuller examines how the French and Americans handled various matters that demanded cooperation, including the requisition of French property, the treatment of Axis prisoners of war, care for displaced persons, the disposition of war booty, dealing with the prosperous black market, the utilization of French transportation networks, GIs’ behavior, and the effective American takeover of the port of Marseille. Fuller establishes how all these issues offered the possibility of working together peacefully or in conflict and concludes that—more often than not—the results were positive and amicable.

Ce deuxième tome de l’impensé numérique, qui vient compléter le premier tome paru en 2016, participe au développement d’une pensée critique du numérique que le directeur de cet ouvrage collectif a engagée voilà 25 ans maintenant. Il marque en quelque sorte un anniversaire, celui d’une réflexion au long cours sur l‘informatisation de la société. Ce temps long de la recherche se révèle, notamment, dans la première partie qui vise à élaborer, reprendre et affiner le cadre conceptuel de ce travail. On y revient, à nouveaux frais, sur les notions d’impensé informatique et numérique, on y présente les notions de « glissement de la prérogative politique » (GPP), qui souligne la prise en main par des acteurs privés de prérogatives jusque là dévolues au politique et de « gestionnarisation », qui désigne le processus qui met en avant la technique (gestion et numérique) et ses catégories au détriment des activités qui doivent s’y adapter. Ce travail de construction théorique, qui mobilise aussi les notions de confiance, d’usage, d’imaginaire et de reconnaissance, s’est déployé sur une bonne quinzaine d’année. Nous n’avons pas voulu supprimer cette épaisseur temporelle, qui fait pleinement partie du travail de recherche lui-même. Les deuxième et troisième parties font le point sur ce que l’on peut appeler une pragmatique de l’impensé : à savoir, comment il s’installe très concrètement aussi bien dans le mode de fonctionnement et d’architecturation d’internet, que dans nos plateformes et dans la manière dont elles transforment le jeu médiatique, à travers, également, l’instauration d’une nouvelle monnaie (le Bitcoin) et de son support technique (la blockchain) ou, enfin, par le biais du big data. L’impensé, en ce sens, n’est pas seulement un effet de discours, il est aussi un effet, pratique, de structuration du réel qui a pour conséquence de fermer des espaces de discutabilité. Ce qui est vrai à l’échelle stratégique de la deuxième partie l’est tout autant à l’échelle tactique, plus locale, qu’adopte la troisième partie : car l’impensé est tout autant au travail dans les discours performatifs de l’éducation, dans celui de la vulgarisation technique de l‘informatique que dans ceux qui structurent les espaces numériques de la culture. Un dernier texte ouvre sur une proposition technique qui s’appuie sur une réflexion critique, afin de montrer que celle-ci n’est pas seulement négative ou supposément technophobe, mais qu’elle peut également nourrir un dispositif technique innovant. La conclusion s’interroge sur la persistance des conditions de possibilité du développement d’une véritable posture critique face à ceux que l’on peut appeler les impenseurs. Elle offre également un petit kit pédagogique de présentation de l‘impensé, du GPP et de la gestionnarisation pour que la critique argumentée puisse, peut être, être mieux entendue. This study proposes a new understanding of cultural evolution through translations embedded in subcultures. The underlying argument is that translation does not evenly and equally affect all social strata in a given culture, but there are selective (inclusive and exclusive) mechanisms that diversify a culture into several usually competing sub-groups. Evolution through translation takes place in parallel and very different sub-streams as subcultures. To make this understanding possible, however, some taken-for-granted notions should be revisited in translation studies (TS) and some gaps should be filled before subcultural translation can be framed. This study proposes an analytic whole in which a momentum of change in history leads to a reacquisition of disposition in cultural subjects, ultimately shaping a form of capital realized as semiotic/lingual translation. To explain this process, Foucault's historical discontinuity, Ricoeur's narrative identity, and Bourdieu's capital are incorporated.

Science often advances upon willful transgression of a seeming interdiction. Examples which leap to a chemist’s mind are noble gas compounds, strained hydrocarbons such as tetrahedranes, activation (by organometallics) of even methane, and, to mention just one brilliant, more recent achievement, inclusion of an allene within the confines of a six-membered ring while preventing its conversion into a benzenoid. Such feats put all the cunning of a scientist into coaxing and, yes, coercing the system at hand to obey instructions from one’s daring imagination. As always, it is hard. Not for nothing is our playroom called a laboratory. And when the task is done and the time arrives to convey to others (who might not be privy to the anguish of the work) all that struggle and the majesty of the achievement, the scientist quite naturally lapses into metaphor. One such, founded in male 19th century language as much as in history, is some more or less prurient variant of “Unveiling the Secrets of Nature.” Another, evoking the thorny, twisted path to understanding and the long hours of toil in the laboratory, is “Wrestling with Nature.” The latter metaphor has been central to experimental science at least since the Elizabethan Age, and is the subject of this small essay. While the roots of the metaphor lie in Greek myth, it makes a striking debut in a seminal brief for experiment in science. This arresting phrase also marks a bifurcation in the way science is viewed by nonscientists, even—and especially so—in our day. The proof text here is that of Francis Bacon (1561–1626), in his 1605 Of the Advancement of Learning. Bacon writes: . . . For like a man’s disposition is never well known till he be crossed, nor Proteus ever changed shapes till he was straitened and held fast; so the passages and variations of nature cannot appear so fully in the liberty of nature, as in the trials and vexations of art. . . . He repeats the imagery in his remarkable 1620 Novum Organum. Bacon’s 1620 book was a clarion call to replace what passed as Aristotelian reasoning about the world with experiment.

O rastreamento de veículos de frotas está entre as principais aplicações de cidades inteligentes. Este trabalho realiza uma avalição de quatro dispositivos rastreadores - dois comerciais e dois programados - que fazem uso de uma rede LoRaWAN para enviar suas geolocalizações coletadas através de sensores GPS. A avaliação dos dispostivos faz parte do desenvolvimento de uma solução de rastreamento de caminhões da coleta seletiva de lixo em parceria com a Universidade e o Município. O comportamento de cada dispositivo é analisado ao percorrer 3 regiões urbanas representativas. Os resultados incluem uma análise quantitativa e qualitativa para apresentar a eficiência dos dispositivos e dados sobre de intensidade do sinal da rede e relação sinal-ruído.

Simular novos protocolos em Redes Corporais sem Fio (Wireless Body Area Networks - WBANs) é importante para fazer uma avaliação da pro- posta antes de partir para o desenvolvimento de uma implementação real. Con- tudo, simuladores de WBANs apenas oferecem aplicações genéricas de rede, não sendo possı́vel simular um dispositivo de saúde em uma rede WBAN. Sendo assim, este trabalho propõe uma camada de aplicação baseada no Padrão ISO/IEEE 11073 para simulação de aplicações de saúde digital em WBANs. A proposta é implementada no simulador Castalia, usando como base a biblioteca Antidote, uma implementação de código aberto de dispositivos ISO/IEEE 11073 (X73-PHD). Resultados de simulação mostram que o modelo de comunicação padrão da norma X73-PHD não apresenta um bom desempenho devido a lon- gos timeouts definidos na norma. Portanto, este artigo também propõe um novo modo de comunicação, que reduz a troca de pacotes de controles e o número de associações feitas pelos dispositivos de saúde em WBANs.

New applications and fuels (such as coal) that increase the potential for flow path degradation due to deposition, erosion, and corrosion (DEC) are being considered for gas turbines. Cascade and turbine DEC tests representing the flow paths of the specific turbines of concern will eventually be necessary for final verification of fuels and DEC control approaches. However, these tests are expensive and are not readily interpretable for other conditions (e.g., fuels and flow passage variations) than those tested. Consequently, relatively inexpensive simplified tests that provide an understanding of the DEC degradation processes are needed to screen the numerous possible candidate fuels and DEC control approaches. The most promising alternatives determined from simplified tests could then be verified in more expensive cascade and turbine tests. This paper discusses simplified DEC tests and complementary data extrapolation approaches that provide and interpret data in a manner that enhances understanding of DEC processes and that can be used to estimate DEC in operating turbines. A new test facility that has been designed for relatively inexpensive turbine DEC evaluations using these approaches is described.

La velocidad de operación, definida como el percentil 85 de la distribución de velocidad de vehículos ligeros circulando en carreteras convencionales en condiciones de flujo libre, es una de las principales variables en la evaluación de la consistencia del diseño geométrico. De esta forma, los únicos vehículos considerados en el análisis son los vehículos ligeros, obviando la influencia de los vehículos pesados. Para la estimación de la velocidad de operación de estos vehículos el número de modelos existentes es mínimo. Por ello, el objetivo del trabajo que se presenta es el estudio experimental de la velocidad desarrollada por vehículos pesados en carreteras convencionales. El estudio no se centra únicamente en la velocidad de operación, sino en el estudio de la distribución completa de la velocidad, ya que los percentiles bajos están relacionados con el riesgo de alcance de vehículos ligeros. Se han analizado las diferentes variables que pueden influir con especial énfasis en las variables geométricas de la carretera. El estudio se ha basado en los datos obtenidos gracias a la colaboración de dos empresas, que han permitido la colocación de dispositivos GPS de 1 Hz en vehículos de su flota. Los GPS registraron de forma continua la velocidad desarrollada por los vehículos durante la realización de su ruta habitual. La influencia sobre el comportamiento de los conductores fue mínima al tratarse de un dispositivo de pequeño tamaño ubicado en el exterior del vehículo. Tras la restitución de la geometría de las carreteras objeto de estudio y el tratamiento de los datos de velocidad registrados, se analizó la influencia de las variables geométricas del trazado, especialmente en cuanto a alzado se refiere, en la velocidad. Se ha concluido que la pendiente no tiene una influencia significativa en la elección de la velocidad por parte de los conductores de vehículos pesados en curvas de carreteras convencionales, donde el principal control de la velocidad son los radios de las propias curvas.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.4995/CIT2016.2016.1904

Within the marine world gas turbines operate in niche ship types only, but why is this? This paper considers the ship types that have adopted marine gas turbines and the ship characteristics that determine the choice of the propulsion system and prime mover type. Ship determined characteristics include; speed, power density, general arrangements, operating profile, fuel type, fuel consumption, maintenance opportunity, manpower and others. Gas turbine characteristics derived from their parentage — either aero or industrial — influence the characteristics available from the marine gas turbine. Historical marine applications are reviewed and new marine applications, influenced by developments with new marine gas turbines are considered both in the developed but evolving naval markets and within the growing but focused commercial marine sector. Propulsion system selection is also influenced by the prevailing and emerging propulsion system technologies, particularly with transmission systems which influence the choice of the prime mover, their number and specific power, and their disposition in the ship.

Abstract:
The United States Department of Energy (US DOE) is conducting research and development (R&D) activities within the Used Fuel Disposition Campaign (UFDC) to support storage, transportation, and disposal of used nuclear fuel (UNF) and wastes generated by existing and future nuclear fuel cycles. R&D activities are ongoing at nine national laboratories, and are divided into two major topical areas: (1) storage and transportation research, and (2) disposal research. Storage R&D focuses on closing technical gaps related to extended storage of UNF. For example, uncertainties remain regarding high-burnup nuclear fuel cladding performance following possible hydride reorientation and creep deformation, and also regarding long-term canister integrity. Transportation R&D focuses on ensuring transportability of UNF following extended storage, addressing data gaps regarding nuclear fuel integrity, retrievability, and demonstration of subcriticality. Disposal R&D focuses on identifying multiple viable geologic disposal options and addressing technical challenges for generic disposal concepts in various host media (e.g., mined repositories in salt, clay/shale, and granitic rocks, and deep borehole disposal in crystalline rock). R&D will transition to site-specific challenges as national policy advances. R&D goals at this stage are to increase confidence in the robustness of generic disposal concepts, to reduce generic sources of uncertainty that may impact the viability of disposal concepts, and to develop science and engineering tools that will support the selection, characterization, and ultimately licensing of a repository. The US DOE has also initiated activities that can be conducted within the constraints of the Nuclear Waste Policy Act to facilitate the development of an interim storage facility and supporting transportation infrastructure.
