Colonial archives congregate intricate webs of information and knowledge articulating numerous historical public and private services. What may represent a colonial public works archive? Are these archives solely collections of historical administrative documents? It seems that these archives can’t be merely the result of colonial administrative and bureaucratic procedures as they perform similarly to territory. Public works records testify to a dense landscape, summoning actors from numerous arenas – politicians, architects, engineers, entrepreneurs, and subalterns – with European uses, custo

AbstractThis article is part of my series of articles that deal with the Western and Chinese commercial disputes from the 1880s until the outbreak of the Sino-Japanese War. In contrast to my previous articles, it deals with commercial disputes between American mercantile firms and Chinese trading merchants in the early twentieth century by examining the unpublished Shanghai American consular archives at NARA II (National Archives and Records Administration), College Park, Maryland. Together with correspondence in the North-China Herald (NCH), these archives can be materials for revealing the p

Yet, the process of online arbitration in Indonesia is questionable because the Indonesian Arbitration Legislation does not provide provisions relating to online arbitration. It is also questioned whether online arbitration awards are domestic or international under the Legislation. Through a critical reflection between classical and contemporary authors, it analyzes the relationships and tensions that cross the archival field throughout its existence. From a theoretical approach, it reflects on archives as social constructions. It argues that this dimension is sometimes covered by the stimuli of the positivist current, which presents them as free of social or political influence. Abstract In this contribution, I examine how Arab imams in Germany draw up and archive documents pertaining to exclusively religious Islamic marriages (nikah). The absence of a central Islamic authority responsible for registering and safeguarding nikah documents in Germany has led to the emergence of a wide range of practices among Arab imams. These include formal registrations of nikahs on pre-printed forms kept in files, boxes or a storeroom; non-standardised documents issued and handled in various different ways; and orally concluded contracts with no documentary trail whatsoever. ABSTRACT: This article examines the French-Ottoman imperial dispute over the sovereign status of nineteenth-century Tunis as a historiographic confrontation. It explores the repercussions of this dispute on our ability to write the history of Ottoman Tunisia and, more broadly, the history of the Ottoman Maghrib. The rivalry between France and the Ottoman Empire produced imperial historiographies that relied on dissonant archives presenting precolonial Tunis as opposite ideal-types, neither of which accounted for the nuances of Tunis's relationship to the Ottoman Empire. The so-called anti-bureaucratic revolution in Vojvodina in 1988 was usually seen as an introduction to the breakup of the Socialist Federative Republic of Yugoslavia, and in fact represented the end of decades-long disputes over Vojvodina’s autonomy. The aim of this paper is to present to the scientific public the genesis and course of the disputes over the autonomy of Vojvodina, which ended in the wake of the breakup of Yugoslavia. This synthesized work is the result of years of research in the Novi Sad and Belgrade archives and literature mostly written by contemporary witnesses.
