Abstract:
Geographic study of hazards has gained considerable prominence in the fifty years since Gilbert White's Human Adjustment to Floods dissertation was published. Over 130 hazards dissertations have been written in the US. and Canada, and hazards articles have gained greater acceptance in major journals. Although White and several of his students served as advisors for nearly a fifth of these dissertations, most hazards dissertations represent efforts by students whose advisors have neither written nor advised a previous hazards dissertation. The majority of hazards dissertation writers obtain employment in positions where they are unable to advise future hazards dissertation writers, thus the production of the next generation of hazards geographers may be in peril.

Abstract:
Objectives: To determine whether unpublished dissertations are an important source of trials for systematic reviews. Methods: In a review of infant massage, we identified 17 dissertations. We recorded whether each dissertation was included in the review and, if so, whether it contributed data to any analyses. Results: Thirteen dissertations were excluded, 11 because of poor reporting of methodology. Three dissertations were also published as journal papers. The data from the remaining dissertation were not included in any analysis. Reviewing data on the Cochrane Library, only one of 878 reviews included data from a dissertation that might have changed a review's conclusions. Conclusions: Searching for and retrieving unpublished dissertations involves considerable time and effort and appears to influence the conclusions of a review only rarely.

Abstract:
American society faces complex educational issues which impact many facets of its national interests. Institutions of higher education are granting doctoral degrees to educational leaders, but it is not known to what extent their dissertation topics are aligned with both longstanding and critical issues in education. Using a theoretical framework synthesizing Paul and Elder’s critical thinking model and Kuhlthau’s information seeking process, this study examines a set of education doctoral dissertation topical selections and categorizes them by general themes in relationship to many of the recognized educational issues in the United States. Investigators categorized dissertations from four departments within the College of Education of their home institution. The dataset, retrieved from ProQuest Dissertations and Theses Global, consisted of 231 documents published between 2005 and 2014. Through an inter-rater process examining dissertation titles, abstracts, and keywords, the dissertations were assigned critical issue themes culled from nine editions of a college text, and then categorized under a broader topical scheme situated within a well-used educational research website. Findings indicated that most dissertations concentrated in studies that researched problems and issues within schools. Further, some of the issues considered longstanding were not studied by dissertation authors within the sample. For example, privatization of schools and classroom discipline and justice were not selected for study. Findings also suggest new directions for those responsible for dissertation supervision and topic selection. The study adds to the literature on dissertation topic selection that addresses existing educational issues.

Abstract:
Objective - To investigate the overall prevalence of citations to theses and dissertations, as well as their prevalence in feature articles, editorials, and review articles in top research nursing journals. To evaluate differences between journals and to determine whether there was a change in use over time. Methods - Journals were selected from the Medical Library Association’s Nursing and Allied Health Resource Section’s 2012 Selected List of Nursing Journals. An evaluation was conducted of citations from 3,711 articles published in 2011 and 2018 in 7 top nursing journals. Thesis and dissertation citations were identified and categorized by type of scholarly communication: feature articles, reviews, and editorials. Analysis was conducted for the prevalence of citations for theses and dissertations based on percentage of overall citations and the percentage of articles with a thesis and dissertation citation. Results - Thesis and dissertation citations accounted for 0.41% of all citations. However, 9.43% of the articles contained at least one thesis and dissertation citation. Feature articles contained more thesis and dissertation citations than review articles and editorials. The Journal of Advanced Nursing, Journal of Clinical Nursing, and the Scandinavian Journal of Caring Sciences published a higher percentage of articles with at least one thesis and dissertation citation. Conclusion - The overall use of theses and dissertations in nursing scholarship is comparatively low compared to other forms of scholarly communication. However, this unique form of scholarship viewed from its impact on the percentage of scholarly articles in nursing demonstrates that theses and dissertations have made more of a contribution than previously reported. Our research provides libraries and the nursing academy with empirical evidence for the value of theses and dissertations. It provides librarians and the nursing academy justification for continuing efforts to preserve, enhance access through digital repositories, and to continue to explore strategies to promote the use of theses and dissertations in research.

Abstract:
The field of social work has increasingly focused on improving the quantity and rigor of its research. For many social work doctoral students, their first independent research experience begins with their dissertation, and yet, little is known about the factors that facilitate students’ success during this process. Sample recruitment is one step where significant and unexpected challenges can occur. As social justice is the central value of the profession, social work doctoral students may focus on research with vulnerable or marginalized populations; however, little research has been done that focuses on social work dissertations, samples used, and the process of recruitment. In this study, 215 doctoral-level social work graduates who completed their degree within the past ten years were surveyed about their dissertation research, with a focus on the sampling strategy and recruitment processes. Findings show that students have a wide diversity of experiences with the dissertation process. While 64.6% anticipant challenges around recruitment and sampling, only 54.9% encounter challenges. Less than half (44.7%) of study participants received guidance during this process and most (80.5%) felt the dissertation experience impacted subsequent research, both positively (40.5%) and negatively (9.8%). Based on these findings, doctoral programs are encouraged to increase supports available to dissertating students, particularly those recruiting study participants from vulnerable and marginalized populations. These supports include community connections, skills for obtaining gatekeeper buy-in, and both relational support and advice from dissertation committees and other colleagues.

Abstract:
Pedagogical sciences occupy a significant place in the system of training and certification of highly qualified scientific personnel. During the period from 2011 to 2020, about 10 thousand dissertations were defended in pedagogical sciences, which is 6.5% of the total number of defenses within the entire certification system. The subject of dissertations should correspond to the challenges of modern society and be aimed at the topical problems of youth education. The purpose of the study is a general assessment of the system of training and certification of candidates and doctors of pedagogical sciences, the development and testing of a method for identifying the mainstream in the subject of dissertation research and quantifying the implementation of priority pedagogical research directions in dissertation works for a ten-year retrospective period. The results of the analysis revealed a reduction in the number of dissertation defenses in pedagogical sciences, which is in line with the general trend of reducing defenses, aging of dissertation councils members, a small number of young doctors of sciences. Thematic analysis of dissertations has shown that research meets the challenges of modern society, while there is a slight thematic delay associated with the time duration of the procedure for preparing and defending a dissertation. The largest number of dissertations was devoted to various issues of higher education in comparison with the other levels of education. Among the academic disciplines, foreign language, mathematics, Russian language and computer science have gained the greatest popularity in the subject of dissertation research. The thematic mainstream includes the formation of professional and communication competencies.

Abstract:
Currently, one of the most important components of scientific activity is the writing and subsequent defense of a candidate's / doctoral dissertation. It is revealed that, despite the rapid digitalization of the educational process in the scientific paradigm of the whole world, including Russia, there is no single digital assessment of the dissertation. The current system of evaluation of a dissertation based on the one-dimensional designation "yes" or "no" does not allow to objectively and impartially determine the scientific value of the dissertation. The author proposed a methodology for evaluating dissertations on a one-hundred-point scale, where the researcher with the highest score on the defense of the dissertation (91-100) would be provided with financial support from the state to continue promising scientific research, while at the same time being an advantage in the competition for his election to the Russian Academy of Sciences. The author is critical of the conditions of the state and prospects of the development of science in Russia, considering it unfair to neglect the system of evaluation in the defense of dissertations, which leads to a constant outflow of young researchers abroad. In the perspective of applying the digital assessment of the dissertation, the support of talented scientists in obtaining high scores in the defense of the dissertation at the local, regional and federal levels is considered.

Abstract:
Throughout the dissertation process, the chair and committee members provide feedback regarding quality to help the doctoral candidate to produce the highest-quality document and become an independent scholar. Nevertheless, results of previous research suggest that overall dissertation quality generally is poor. Because much of the feedback about dissertation quality provided to candidates, especially those in online learning environments, is written, there is an opportunity to assess the quality of that feedback. In this study, a comparative descriptive design was employed using a random sample of 120 dissertation reviews at one online university. Common foundational errors across dissertations and strengths and growth areas in reviewer feedback were noted. Whereas reviewer feedback quality was acceptable overall, there were significant differences across reviewers. Based on the findings, increased discourse, standardization of psychometrically sound measures that assess reviewer feedback quality, and ongoing training for faculty members who review dissertations might be warranted.

Abstract:
The current process of doctoral education, as well as its results, remain the target of severe criticism despite the adoption of a system of measures aimed at improving the quality of dissertation review including ubiquitous plagiarism checks, reduction of the number of defenses of substandard dissertations and a stricter code of practice for dissertation committees. The article identifies potential ways to improve dissertation quality, drawing on an analysis of the dynamics of indicators pertaining to the training of contemporary Russian doctoral students and the activity of their academic supervisors. The authors give special consideration to justified recommendations concerning the following issues: improvement of the quality of doctoral student body; increase in scholarship provision in conjunction with the creation of financial incentives for dissertation completion and defense; development of mechanisms to improve the performance of academic supervisors; refinement of the procedure of dissertation results examination in each of three interconnected stages: student performance review, dissertation defense and dissertation review by the expert board of the State Commissions for Academic Degrees and Titles.

Abstract:
Quantitative assessment of the quality of scientific activity occupies a significant place in the implementation of innovative developments. As part of the study, the authors proposed a method of expert quantitative evaluation of the quality of dissertations of doctors of philosophy on the example of the specialty Geodesy and Land Management, which proposes to determine the properties of the dissertation, develop an evaluation scale, quantify each property and calculate an integrated indicator, based on which the conclusion of the dissertation. Modern mobile computing tools allow you to create a mobile application for gadgets of experts, members of specialized scientific councils, and in real time (in the process of conducting a professional seminar and defending a dissertation) to quantify the quality of the dissertation. Gadgets of two reviewers, two opponents, the chairman of the specialized scientific council, and the scientific secretary are elements of the generalized scheme of collecting and integrating expert assessments on the quality of the dissertation performed for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy. The gadget of the scientific secretary is a server and is endowed with functions of transfer of information on an estimation on system of support of educational processes of department on which special page the corresponding estimations of quality of dissertations can be placed. The proposed letter assessing the quality of the dissertation consists of three parts: the first is information about the expert, the second is a system of sign-numerical scales that allow in the usual form for research and teaching staff to assess individual features of the dissertation, the third may contain specific proposals of the expert. A generalized scheme for collecting and integrating expert assessments in real time using mobile technologies has also been developed. An example of approbation of the proposed method is given. The boundaries of productive and unproductive intervals of the sign-numerical scale are considered. The proposed method meets modern requirements for digitalization. It allows you to determine in real time a quantitative indicator of the quality of research conducted by the applicant, which in turn ranks dissertations and makes them attractive to investors, which will develop promising areas of research and accelerate scientific and technological progress. The given examples of realization of a method based on theories close to human psychology – the theory of usefulness, the psychological theory of decision-making, and also wide experience of estimation of dissertation will allow to make a certain contribution to experimental researches of the organization of dissertations for the degree of doctor of philosophy.

Abstract:
Aim/Purpose: The purpose of the research was to examine the function and application of delimitations—what the researcher includes and excludes in a study—in the dissertation process. The aim was to map the delimitations process to improve research, rigor and relevance of findings, and doctoral completion rates using a formalized and standardized approach applied flexibly. Background: All research is bounded whether formally defined or not. Unlike limitations, which are issues which the researcher addressed after the completion of a study and cannot control, delimitations are what a researcher includes and excludes to make a project manageable and focused on the research question. Yet, there was no research identified which specifically discussed delimitations. Researching the structure and utility of delimitations in educational administration dissertations provided a systematic analysis of the formation of the scope and boundary of research in doctoral studies. Methodology: The structure of delimitations in dissertations were examined using descriptive quantitative statistics and a qualitative thematic analysis from 28 universities. The first stage included delimitations from 30 dissertations. Triangulation was conducted using the findings with a training set of delimitations in 15 dissertations with a rubric generated from the primary sample. Contribution: The thematic analysis presented a description and interpretation of the nature of delimitations and a systematic framework to improve the research process in dissertations. Mapping the delimitations process gave a detailed portrait of internal and external characteristics which could aid doctoral students in completing the dissertation. Doctoral attrition rates, poorly completed dissertations, and lack of relevance or applicability of results need remedied. Furthermore, the delimitations rubric provided a systematic method to focus communities of learners around a common goal. Findings: Findings suggested doctoral students used delimitations haphazardly and lacked a systematic application to research. Three major themes emerged from the delimitations sections: rituals, equifinality, and pragmatism. Topics within delimitations sections centered around two axes: the internal topics of sampling procedures and factors/variables and external topics of research design and conceptual/theoretical framework. Recommendations for Practitioners: Poorly understood and developed delimitations negatively impacted findings in dissertations, completion rates, and future research skills of doctoral students. By applying delimitations to a design of research framework in a community of learners, doctoral students and dissertation chairs could improve the dissertation completion process and improve research results using a Delimitations Evaluation Rubric. Recommendation for Researchers: Developing a rules-based process with a formalized and standardized process could give researchers a way to evaluate and plan the dissertation process. Developing and applying rubrics to delimitations could serve as a conduit to effective mentoring, feedback, and empowerment. Impact on Society: Improving doctoral completion rates in a timely manner would be beneficial to students’ long-term and personal interests. A well-defined delimitations process could improve the dissertation, and strengthened dissertations could add to the research base. Future Research: Delimitations are listed in one section, but the scope and boundaries are often fragmented and disjointed throughout a dissertation. By examining complete dissertations for delimitations, there could be further insight. Expanding rubrics as a tool to build a community of learners could develop a holistic approach to doctoral education.

The shifting of religious authority has been a primary issue of (un)published dissertations on Indonesian Islam. The collapse of Soeharto regime, more or less, takes salient effect on the rise of new religious authorities; while on the same time it provokes social change in the society. New religious mass organizations, such as Hizbut Tahrir Indonesia, Front Pembela Islam and Front Umat Islam, seem to be main critical discussion in certain dissertation in line with some topics which problematizes prominent Islamic organizations, Muhammadiyah and Nahdlatul Ulama, under new framework of analysis. New media and Islamic banking have to be other domain authorities that carefully discussed in some dissertation. Put it in another topics, gender issue take a untrivial position. In short, these dissertations topics tend to discuss more on Islam in popular authorities. Keywords:Islamic Studies, Bibliography, Dissertation, Indonesia

Abstract:
As a part of their doctoral education, students complete a dissertation. Examining these dissertations can provide one analysis of research in a field. The primary purpose of this study was to analyze all physical education dissertations with a teaching focus that were completed between 1985 and 1999. All possible dissertations were examined through the electronic version of Dissertation Abstracts International. For the teaching dissertations (n = 201), each abstract was coded for (a) research type, (b) research focus, (c) student variable measured, (d) observation used, (e) interview used, (f) other methods used, (g) population, (h) general methodology, and (i) statistics reported/used. Most research on teaching dissertations addressed issues related to teacher effectiveness and focused on motor skill learning and attitude. There was an increase in qualitative methods from those reported in a previous study (Silverman, 1987). While there were methodological advances, many dissertations still used methods that were not informed by the research methods literature.

Abstract:
Although substantial attention has been given to doctoral students, the attention given to master’s students writing dissertations is limited. This article outlines a transactional model of stress that conceptualises dissertation writing as a stressor consisting of a series of phases that tend to increase the risk of negative outcomes. A mixed-method design was used to address the aim of the study. An adapted version of the Stress and Support Questionnaire for University Students was used to measure the stress that master’s students experienced. Open-ended questions were employed to measure students’ evaluations of the stress experienced when writing a dissertation. The model proposed that the phases of dissertation writing moderate the relationship between stressor factors and the stress experienced. In an empirical study making use of the model, the moderation analyses revealed that Phase 1 of dissertation writing significantly moderated the relationship between the stress experienced, stressor factors of relationships, financial and transport problems and health related problems. The qualitative data suggested that stress is evaluated either positively or negatively depending on time-management styles and support systems. The results obtained underscore the importance of support structures in alleviating the stress experienced when writing dissertations in order to improve students’ retention and graduation rates.

Abstract:
The aims of this study were: i. to analyze the effect of nationality on the psychophysiological stress response of physiotherapy last year students in their final degree dissertations; and ii. to analyze the relationship between the stress response and academic results according to nationality. We evaluated the autonomic stress response, cortical arousal, distress subjective perception, and objective and subjective academic fulfilment in Spanish, Italian, and French physiotherapy students during their final degree dissertation. Results showed a large anticipatory anxiety response before the dissertation in the three student groups. Only the Spanish group showed an increased tendency in the habituation process, reducing the psychophysiological stress response during the dissertation, while the Italian and French groups maintained a large sympathetic activation until the end of the dissertation. Cortical arousal and subjective perception of distress were similar in the three nationalities. In addition, no correlation between academic fulfilment and autonomic modulation was found. We concluded that there was no nationality effect in the psychophysiological stress response of physiotherapy last year students in their final degree dissertation, all of them showing a large anticipatory anxiety response.

Abstract:
This study identifies and examines accounting information systems (AIS) dissertations from 1986 through 2000 by research topic and method to provide insights into their contribution to accounting knowledge. This examination also identifies key universities where AIS dissertations have been produced by accounting faculty. AIS dissertation data are compared to Samuels and Steinbart (2002), which examines articles in the Journal of Information Systems (JIS) by AIS research topics and methods over the same period, as well as to articles in the International Journal of Accounting Information Systems (IJAIS) (formerly Advances in Accounting Information Systems). Results indicate evidence of mirror, lead, and lag effects over the timeframe of study between AIS dissertations and JIS and IJAIS articles with respect to research topics covered and methods utilized. Publication rates for these dissertations in JIS and IJAIS are also provided. Finally, this study presents comparisons to other accounting dissertation studies.

Abstract:
Aim/Purpose: The purpose of this exploratory qualitative case study was to understand dissertation chair agency, chair preparation, and academic supports provided by experienced Educational Leadership Ed.D. dissertation chairs in the United States. Background: Previous research has identified attrition rates of 50-60 percent in education doctoral programs. This research helps identify the faculty profiles and academic supports provided by Educational Leadership faculty who have served on successful dissertation committees. Understanding these findings may help to improve retention and completion in other doctoral programs. Methodology: This was an exploratory qualitative case study. Ten doctoral faculty who have successfully chaired 419 Ed.D. Educational Leadership dissertations at accredited U.S. colleges and universities were interviewed. Data were analyzed using the constant comparative method. Contribution: The findings from this study contribute to the body of knowledge on doctoral retention and dissertation completion by providing information on promising practices from the perspective of dissertation chairs. Findings: While successful dissertation chairs exhibited expertise as researchers, seven of the ten participants reported that they had limited training for chairing dissertations. Academic supports included coursework that was organized coherently with a focus on opportunities for substantive feedback, writing support and research methodology. Recommendations for Practitioners: Dissertation chairs should utilize their agency to ensure that the program has the proper resources to support doctoral education. This includes adequate writing support for graduate students, courses taught by faculty who are engaged in research and understand the requirements for completing a dissertation, and protecting faculty time so that they are able to provide students substantive feedback within coursework and at the dissertation phase. Recommendation for Researchers: Researchers should continue to explore the causes of attrition in doctoral programs and identify specific actions that can be taken to improve program completion rates. Impact on Society: Increasingly U.S. institutions of higher learning are being called to validate their success and improve retention rates. Understanding the faculty profiles and academic supports utilized by successful doctoral faculty has the potential to improve retention and thereby increase completion rates and consequentially alleviate the stressors that ABD students experience. Future Research: Future research could focus on expanding the findings of this study by exploring the perspectives of faculty based on institution type and examining how socio-emotional factors such as student-student and faculty-student relationships are intentionally established in programs with high graduation rates.

Abstract:
Aim. The presented study aims to develop a scientifically based method of obtaining quantitative indicators for the staffing of priority areas through the training of highly qualified scientific personnel. Tasks. The authors create a methodology for comparing the topics of dissertation research (scientific specialties and dissertation topics) with the priority areas formulated in the Strategy for the Scientific and Technological Development of the Russian Federation (STD RF); conduct a survey of candidates of sciences to learn their assessment of the compliance ofdissertation research topics with the priority areas of the STD RF strategy and to identify the peculiarities of the professional development of candidates of sciences after the defense of their dissertations; analyze the staffing of the priority areas of the STD RF strategy through the training of highly qualified personnel (HQP) based on the results of the survey and the developed methodology for matching the topic of the dissertation with the topics of the priority areas of the STD RF strategy and the retention of the trained HQP in the scientific and technological field corresponding to such priority areas; identify Competence Centers for the training of HQP for the staffing of the priority directions of the STD RF strategy. Methods. A methodology of step-by-step matching of dissertation research and priority areas according to the criteria of "scientific specialty" and "dissertation title" is developed using three approaches: expert, keyword-based, and embedding-based. A sociological survey of 8,402 candidates of sciences was conducted to obtain quantitative indicators. Results. It is found that only one out of three candidates of sciences who defended a dissertation in one of the priority areas continues to engage in scientific activity on the subject of his dissertation after the defense. Over half of the candidates of sciences (around 60 %) whose dissertation topic corresponds to the priorities of the STD RF strategy occasionally engage in scientific activities on the subject of their dissertation research. Around 12 % of candidates of sciences stopped developing their research topics after defending their dissertations. Conclusions. The potential of HQP trained in the subject of priority areas is not fully realized. The number of HQP that remain focused on the topics of the priority areas of the STD RF strategy can serve as a benchmark for the formation of indicators of staffing efficiency in the priority areas of scientific and technological development.

Abstract:
This paper aims to enhance the supervision-level of post-graduate dissertations in a Middle East Branch Campus of a Transnational Higher Education Institution (HEI). For a number of years, the proposal stage of the dissertation had been more or less ignored and final dissertation results had been adequate. Then in one academic year, a series of initiatives comprising; focused workshops, formative assessment, one to one guidance, best practice panels and proposal grading, were developed and implemented. This resulted in a sustained passing rate and a significant elevation of grade classifications awarded. The author suggests that the practices contained herein could benefit similar dissertation programs offered both in the Middle East region and worldwide.

Abstract:
This article overviews the Tatar ASSR’s history of the culture of writing and defending dissertations on various archeological issues during the first three decades of Soviet power. Until 1918, universities followed the pre-revolutionary practice of awarding academic degrees, as it was with V.F. Smolin who defended his dissertation in 1918. M.G. Khudyakov, another talented student who studied archeology and V.F. Smolin’s colleague, dropped his research projects because he had been registered for the draft during the World War I to join the front-line army units; in 1918, he yet successfully passed the exams, but without defending a dissertation; although he had never submitted his work at any oral defense, he was awarded the degree of Doctor of History in 1936. Among the researchers who had received higher education before the revolution but defended their dissertations in archeology in the Soviet times, N.F. Kalinin stands out: he worked at the Institute of Literature of the Kazan Branch of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR and focused his research on the Stone and Bronze Ages of Tataria, but defended his dissertation in 1947, i.e., after the Great Patriotic War. At around that time, O.S. Khovanskaya and A.M. Efimova, both worked at the State Museum of Tatarstan, were writing their dissertations on the Middle Ages under the guidance of A.P. Smirnov; for many valid reasons, they did not present their works in front of the dissertation committee. In the 1950s, A.Kh. Khalikov and V.F. Gening, N.F. Kalinin’s post-graduate students, brilliantly defended their dissertations – on the Bronze and Early Iron Ages, respectively. V.F. Gening then moved from Kazan to Sverdlovsk, and the subsequent generation of archeologists in the Tatar ASSR was brought up and shaped by A.Kh. Khalikov. The results obtained show that a bulk of the dissertations in archeology were defended by the Tatar ASSR researchers in the late 1940s, most of them were based on the archeological expeditions in the republic and the excavations at the Bolgar settlement organized by A.P. Smirnov and N.F. Kalinin.

Abstract:
<p style="text-align: justify;">Writing is very important for learners; it is a dynamic and creative skill. Although studies on students’ problems when writing a dissertation among Native Speakers (NS) are widely done, studies on English as a Foreign Language (EFL) are limited, especially those which examine problems faced while writing dissertations among Ph.D. EFL learners, in particular, Jordanian Ph.D. candidates. Studies on the supervisors' perspectives of writing a dissertation are scarce among EFL learners, particularly Arab learners. This study aims at focusing on supervisors' perspectives of writing dissertations among Jordanian Ph.D. students who are studying abroad. This study is a qualitative case study. The researchers interviewed nine Malaysian supervisors who supervised 21 Jordanian Ph.D. candidates. The results show that six main themes emerged from the supervisors' perspectives, and they are grammatical mistakes, lack of vocabulary and verbs reporting, personal effects, lack of motivation, writing apprehension, and the problem with generic thesis structure. This paper contributes with a comprehensive analysis of the theoretical perspectives on problems Ph.D. students face when writing a dissertation. The study also fills in the gap in the field of supervisors' perspectives of writing a dissertation. Based on the results found, the researchers suggest a number of recommendations and further research that might help supervisors understand the reasons behind such difficulties.</p>

Abstract:
AbstractResearch work embodied in a master's dissertation remains confined to a limited domain of the researcher, supervisor/co-supervisor and university library. It is desirable that the dissertation material be published in a reputed journal for various reasons including career growth of the researcher, recognition by the professional body, dissemination to a wider audience etc. Writing a research article from a dissertation does not mean just to shorten the latter mechanically or a cut-paste method. For the novice writer, it is a daunting task, but rewarding experience as well, to convert a dissertation to an article. Advice and support of the supervisor and senior colleagues having good experience in research as well as publication should be taken who can navigate the publication process, following the guidelines of the target journal. This article presents a synthesis of guidelines and practices to be followed by the researchers to see that the outcomes of their incessant and tireless efforts in preparing the dissertations be documented through publishable articles.

The purpose of this extended review of Rhiger’s dissertation is first to share the enthusiasm of the assessment committee for the project as well as its perspectives for Practical Theology and the celebration of service in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Denmark. Secondly, the authors behind the review wish to advance some critical reflections on the formal requirements forsimilar experimental research projects in the future since this dissertation– as the pioneer work that it is – is likely to set the standards for “product dissertations” in the future.

Abstract:
Dissertations in economics have changed dramatically over the past forty years, from primarily treatise-length books to sets of essays on related topics. We document trends in essay-style dissertations across several metrics, using data on dissertation format, PhD program characteristics, demographics, job market outcomes, and early career research productivity for two large samples of US PhDs graduating in 1996-1997 or 2001-2002. Students at higher ranked PhD programs, citizens outside the United States, and microeconomics students have been at the forefront of this trend. Economics PhD graduates who take jobs as academics are more likely to have written essay-style dissertations, while those who take government jobs are more likely to have written a treatise. Finally, most of the evidence suggests that essay-style dissertations enhance economists' early career research productivity.

Abstract:
Continuing the previous edition, this bibliography presents dissertations titles produced mainly from universities in Australia, America, and Canada. Not only dissertations ones, some important theses are also displayed in this bibliography. The period 1980-1999 is a salient period in the process of Indonesian Islamic studies development. Since 1990 Minister of Religious Affairs has selectively sent Indonesian scholars finishing their master degree to McGill University. For the result, they produced theses master on Indonesian Islam. On the one hand, this theses can be used as an evidence that Indonesian scholars were able to introduce Indonesian Islam abroad; on the other hand, this introduction focuses on leaders thoughtwhich is then dominated the pattern of Islamic studies in Indonesian Islamic higher education institutions. In comparison, dissertation/thesis from the universities in the United States and Australia shows notable interesting assumption that during that period the scholars whose background are Islamic studies tend to produce theological-doctrinal dissertation/thesis as well as that of leaders-thought; while scholars with social and cultural background tend to review Islam from the attending problems in society. Keywords: Islamic Studies, McGill University, Bibliography, Dissertation, Indonesia

Abstract:
The need to improve the quality of dissertation research requires establishing effective legal instruments to fight plagiarism. It is of particular relevance in the light of the reform of the state scientific certification system aimed at providing more freedom to leading scientific organizations in awarding academic degrees. The study is devoted to identifying problems that arise in implementation of the existing tools to fight plagiarism, finding ways to eliminate them, as well as analyzing the best practices of organizations that independently award academic degrees. First, plagiarism counteraction is ensured by fixing the requirements for independent preparation of a dissertation and inadmissibility of using materials without reference to the author or other sources. According to the new model of state scientific certification, some organizations fix both the supporting nature of checking for plagiarism through special programs and the need for an expert review of the report. It is advisable to use the threshold values for the originality of the text based on the results of automated verification as a necessary condition at the stage of preparation by the organization of the conclusion on the dissertation. Detailed regulation of the procedure for checking research on the amount of plagiarism ensures transparency and increases the efficiency of certification procedures, and helps protect the rights of applicants. All applied forms of peer review and control of dissertation research are aimed, among other things, at fighting plagiarism. The well-established practice of posting dissertations, abstracts, information about persons involved in certification procedures on the Internet, information about facts of plagiarism found in the texts of dissertations, as well as a ban on re-defending such dissertations, should be recognized as a special tool for fighting plagiarism.

Online surveys were sent to current students, alumni, faculty, and department representatives of instructional technology programs, and data were analysed using qualitative and quantitative methods. Additionally, respondents reported that multiple article dissertation formats facilitate authenticity and collaboration and prepare students for a career in academia. However, some participants perceived the multiple article format to be less rigorous than traditional dissertations, with ambiguous requirements and expectations of quality. More research is needed in order to understand current practices for multiple article dissertation formats in instructional technology.</p>
