Further tests of EVT4 data acquisition system for electrical capacitance tomography are presented. The modular system, which can have up to 32 channels with an individual analogue to digital converter, was designed to ensure small uncertainty of capacitance measurement at high speed of imaging. The system’s performance in the context of 3D imaging was experimentally verified. In particular, we show that the measurement of changes in capacitance due to a small change of an electric permittivity distribution for the most distant electrodes in a suitably designed 3D sensor is possible using our s

ABSTRACT It is possible to reduce the discrepancy between the local measurement of the cosmological parameter H0 and the value derived from the Planck measurements of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) by considering contamination of the CMB by emission from some medium around distant extragalactic sources, such as extremely cold coarse-grain dust. Though being distant, such a medium would still be in the foreground with respect to the CMB, and, as any other foreground, it would alter the CMB power spectrum. This could contribute to the dispersion of CMB temperature fluctuations. By generat

To make it a useful resource, particularly for scalable long-distance quantum communication, the heralded generation of entanglement between distant massive quantum systems is necessary. We report on the creation and analysis of heralded entanglement between spins of two single rubidium-87 atoms trapped independently 20 meters apart. Our results illustrate the viability of an integ

Particulate matter air pollution is one of the most dangerous pollutants nowadays and an indirect cause of numerous diseases. A number of these consequences could possibly be avoided if the right information about air pollution were available at a large number of locations, especially in urban areas. Unfortunately, this is not the case today. In the whole of Europe, there are just approximately 3000 automated measuring stations for PM10, and only about 1400 stations equipped for PM2.5 measurement. In order to improve this issue and provide availability of real-time data about air pollution, di

This study was designed to test the hypothesis that analyses of central interstitial potential differences recorded during multisite stimulation with a set of interstitial electrodes provide sufficient data for accurate measurement of cardiac microimpedances. On theoretical grounds, interstitial current injected and removed using electrodes in close proximity does not cross the membrane, whereas equilibration of intracellular and interstitial potentials occurs distant from electrodes widely separated. Multisite interstitial stimulation should therefore give rise to interstitial potential diffe

The interferometric mapping of astronomical objects relies on the van-Cittert Zernike theorem, one of the major results of the theory of partially coherent light [see, Bom and Wolf (1980), chapter 10]. This theorem states that the degree of spatial coherence of the field from a distant spatially incoherent source is proportional to the Fourier transform of the intensity distribution across the source. Measurement of the degree of spatial coherence, by, for example, measuring the visibility of interference fringes, allows the object to be mapped by making an inverse Fourier transform. (For a fu

ABSTRACT Distance measurements to molecular clouds are essential and important. We present directly measured distances to 169 molecular clouds in the fourth quadrant of the Milky Way. Based on the near-infrared photometry from the Two Micron All Sky Survey and the Vista Variables in the Via Lactea Survey, we select red clump stars in the overlapping directions of the individual molecular clouds and infer the bin averaged extinction values and distances to these stars. We track the extinction versus distance profiles of the sightlines towards the clouds and fit them with Gaussian dust distribut

AbstractDuring turning of quenched and tempered AISI4140 surface layer states can be generated, which degrade the lifetime of manufactured parts. Such states may be brittle rehardened layers or tensile residual stresses. A soft sensor concept is presented in this work, in order to identify relevant surface modifications during machining. A crucial part of this concept is the measurement of magnetic characteristics by means of the 3MA-testing (Micromagnetic Multiparameter Microstructure and Stress Analysis). Those measurements correlate with the microstructure of the material, only take a few s

This paper is a new step towards understanding why “quantum nonlocality” is a misleading concept. Metaphorically speaking, “quantum nonlocality” is Janus faced. One face is an apparent nonlocality of the Lüders projection and another face is Bell nonlocality (a wrong conclusion that the violation of Bell type inequalities implies the existence of mysterious instantaneous influences between distant physical systems). According to the Lüders projection postulate, a quantum measurement performed on one of the two distant entangled physical systems modifies their compound quantum state instantaneo

Understanding the demographics of users of online social networks has important applications for health, marketing, and public messaging. Whereas most prior approaches rely on a supervised learning approach, in which individual users are labeled with demographics for training, we instead create a distantly labeled dataset by collecting audience measurement data for 1,500 websites (e.g., 50% of visitors to gizmodo.com are estimated to have a bachelor's degree). We then fit a regression model to predict these demographics from information about the followers of each website on Twitter. Using pat

When larvae of the praying mantis Polyspilota sp. and Tenodera sinensis want to leave an exposed position and can choose to move between stationary objects at different distances, they usually choose the nearest. Their ability to select the nearest object is greatest when the background has horizontal stripes and is least when it has vertical stripes. Object preference is based on a successive distance comparison, which may involve content-related memory processes. 2. Mantid larvae can determine the absolute distance to a stationary object.
