Full textThis study focuses on the action mechanisms of poly vinyl alcohol-based macromolecular surfactants on the stabilization of vinyl chloride (VCM)/water emulsions used for the suspension polymerization of VCM. Five “primary” PVA (PVA I) with high hydrolysis degrees ( between 73 à 88 %mol) and different polymerization degrees ( between 700 à 2500), as well as one “secondary” PVA (PVA II) with 45%mol, have been studied on a large concentration range [0-1000 ppm/water]. The interfacial tensions and the size distributions of ClBu/water emulsions have been determined as a function of time. An original technique of on-line granulometry: the ultrasound attenuation spectroscopy has been used. The PVA I with low and are the most efficient stabilizers. For each PVA I, a direct correlation between mean diameter of droplets and interfacial tension has been established. Moreover, the importance of the interface viscoelasticity has been demonstrated. Because of their low , PVA II are insoluble in water. Well-defined colloidal particles of PVA II and combinations PVA I/ PVA II have been prepared by coacervation. For a given total PVA concentration, these nanoparticles of diameter 150-200 nm lower more the interfacial tension, and the mean droplet diameters, than PVA I alone. A Pickering stabilization by nanoparticles can be considered, in addition to the steric stabilization provided by PVA I

Full textExposure to metals from fine and ultrafine particles is of major health concern, especially in heavily industrialized areas. This thesis aims to better characterize the metal fraction of fine and ultrafine particles emitted in an industrial-marked urban context (Dunkirk harbour) and to determine their lung bioaccessibility, in relation with their health impact. Particles were collected according to their size in specific environments : (i) in an urban area influenced by traffic and industrial emissions and (ii) at the stacks and in the vicinity of a ferromanganese plant (Glencore), characteristic of the industrial activity in Dunkirk. Pulmonary bioaccessibility of metals was determined using a synthetic lung fluid (Gamble solution), and compared to a sequential extraction method. In the urban area, the elemental concentrations in ultrafine particles are primarily related to lacal sources (traffic and housse heating), while submicronic particles (< 1µm) are mainly affected by industrial sources, especially metallurgical plants, the main source of particulate metals in the industrial area. The other sources identified are petrochemistry, coal and heavy-fuels burning and natural sources (sea salts and crustal particles). A high temporal variability of fine and ultrafine particles mass concentrations and of their metal contents was observed at the stacks and in the close environment of the ferromanganese plant. The high concentrations of ultrafine particles (PM₀,₁ : 60% of the total PM₂,₅ mass), enriched in metals, as observed in stack flues, decrease rapidly in the vicinity of the plant, due to the changes in temperatureand humidity, inducing rapid transformations. The metal bioaccessibility varies according to the particle properties (metals chemical speciation and particle size distribution), depending on their origin and formation processes. This metal bioaccessibility may also be affected by physicochemical transformations of fine particles occuring during atmospheric transport (mixing/agglomeration, aggregation, oxidation or reduction processes). The in-vitro bioaccessibility assessment is of interest to better understand the metal bioavailability and thus for a better appreciation of the health impact of toxic metals

Full textClouds are a major source of uncertainties in current climate models. These uncertainties arise from the difficulty to establish parameterizations to integrate properly the radiative properties of clouds in climate models. To improve and optimize these parameterizations, it is necessary to collect a large amount of information on macrophysical and microphysical cloud properties. The determination of these properties is mainly based on the comparison of satellite measurements to simulations from radiative transfer models in cloudy atmosphere. In this study, we investigate the radiative properties of cirrus clouds which are composed of ice crystals with various shapes and sizes. Thus, a correct representation of cirrus radiative properties depends on a good understanding of the scattering and absoption properties of ice crystals encountered in this clouds. For this, we have developped several algorithms for the calculation of the single scattering and polarization properties of differents ice crystals model. In addition, the satellite cirrus retrieval algorithms is based on the common assumption that the radiative properties of a cirrus cloud may be represented by a homogeneous cloud model with a specific ice crystal shape and a single particle size distribution. However, in situ observations of cirrus clouds have shown that the shapes and sizes of ice crystals may vary substantially with height within the clouds. So, it is necessary to assess the sensibility of cirrus radiative properties to vertical heterogeneity of ice crystal habit and size distributions. In a second part of this study, we have developed a cirrus cloud models that can account for this vertical heterogeneity. The results suggests that it is critical to take into account cirrus vertical heterogeneity in order to correctly model their radiative properties. Additionally, the results provide guidance for the development of new approach to infer vertical size distribution in ice clouds
