Link, Christine Marie. "A reconnaisance of organic maturation and petroleum source potential of Phanerozoic strata in northern Yukon and northwestern District of Mackenzie." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 1988. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/27980.

Full text
Abstract:
The level of organic maturation, thermal history and petroleum source potential of Phanerozoic strata in northern Yukon and northwestern District of Mackenzie have been investigated by measurement of vitrinite (% Rorand) and graptolite (% Romax) reflectance, conodont alteration index (CAI) and Rock-Eval pyrolysis. The strata in general have lower maturity levels in southern Mackenzie Delta, Peel Plateau and Eagle Plain than in the Richardson and Ogilvie Mountains. The level of maturation varies from graptolite reflectance values of 4.0% to 6.5% Romax and CAI values of 3.5 to 5 in Upper Cambrian to Lower Devonian strata whereas vitrinite reflectance ranging from 0.2% to 3.75% Rorand occur in Middle Devonian to Upper Cretaceous strata. Time-averaged numerical modelling of measured maturation gradients (0.10 to 0.32 log Rorand/km) suggest paleogeothermal gradients on the order of 20 to 45°C/km in southern Mackenzie Delta and Peel Plateau, from 10 to 20°C/km in central Eagle Plain and from 20 to 45°C/km adjacent the Richardson and Ogilvie Mountains. The higher maturity levels in mountainous areas reflect higher maturation gradients and, in the Richardson Mountains, deeper burial due to rapid subsidence caused by the foundering of grabens within the Richardson Fault Array. Anomalously high maturation values (0.92% to 1.60% Rorand) measured in Lower Cretaceous strata on the Campbell Uplift are interpreted to reflect high paleoheat flow associated with basement uplift. Average TOC contents are generally low to moderate (0.1 to 2.0%) but organic-rich intervals occur throughout the studied succession. TOC values up to 14.5% are present in the Upper Cretaceous Eagle Plain Group, values up to 9.5% occur in the Middle Devonian Canol Formation and Upper Cambrian to Lower Devonian Road River Group and values up to 5.0% are present in the Lower Cretaceous map unit Kwr and Mount Goodenough Formation, the Lower Cretaceous and Jurassic Husky Formation, the Jurassic Porcupine River Formation and the Upper Carboniferous Blackie and Hart River Formations and the Ford Lake Shale. The organic matter (OM) is dominantly type III except for minor amounts of type I and II in Lower Paleozoic strata and a mixture of type II and III in parts of Middle Devonian, Carboniferous, Jurassic and Lower Cretaceous strata. The quality of organic matter varies significantly (QOM; 0.01 to 6.1 mg HC/g Corg) as a result of variation in organic maturity, the type of OM and, in some cases, migration. Average QOM values are generally low to moderate (0.01 to 1.5 mg HC/g Corg) and, along with low to moderate Hydrogen Index values (<300 mg HC/g Corg), suggest poor to moderate petroleum source potential. Relatively few examples of potential oil prone source rocks occur, but these include parts of the Road River Group, the Hare Indian, Canol, Hart River, Blackie, Mount Goodenough and Arctic Red River Formations, the Ford Lake Shale, unnamed Carboniferous unit and map unit Kwr. Gas prone source rocks comprise parts of the Blackie, Porcupine River, Husky, Mount Goodenough and Arctic Red River Formations and the Bug Creek and Eagle Plain Groups and map unit Kwr. With respect to petroleum generation, Upper Cretaceous strata are generally immature. Lower Cretaceous to Permian strata are immature to mature, Carboniferous strata are immature to overmature, and Devonian and older rocks are mature to overmature. The timing of hydrocarbon generation from source rocks in the study area varied substantially both laterally and stratigraphically as a result of variations in the timing and magnitude of the maximum depths of burial. The variation in source rock quality appears to closely reflect the interpreted depositional environment of some of the strata which facilitates the interpretation of regional extent of. potential hydrocarbon source rocks. A correlation of graptolite and vitrinite reflectance, calibrated by conodonts, shows that a graptolite reflectance range of 5% to 6.5% Romax (CAI = 5) corresponds to a vitrinite reflectance of 4.0% Romax. Graptolite organic remains appear to behave similar to bitumen with increasing depth of burial; at higher levels of thermal maturity, graptolite reflectance increases more rapidly than vitrinite reflectance.
Science, Faculty of
Earth, Ocean and Atmospheric Sciences, Department of
Graduate

Micko, Janina. "The geology and genesis of the Central Zone alkalic copper-gold porphyry deposit, Galore Creek district, northwestern British Columbia, Canada." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/30497.

Full text
Abstract:
Located in the Late Triassic Galore Creek alkalic Cu-Au porphyry district in northwestern British Columbia, the Central Zone deposit represents the end-member of the silica-undersaturated class of alkalic porphyry systems. The deposit is hosted by volcano-sedimentary rocks of the Middle to Upper Triassic Stuhini Group that were intruded by a syenite-monzonite complex and hydrothermal breccias. Post-mineral tilt (45 to 60° W-SW) provides an opportunity to examine a vertically extensive depth range of the system, and the impact of host rocks and a redox control on the precipitation of sulfide and silicate alteration minerals. Early mineralization associated with potassic alteration is dominated by gold-bearing chalcopyrite + bornite (Cu:Au ~ 2:1). A second gold-poor mineralization event is associated with calc-potassic alteration and dramatically changes the Cu:Au ratio (5:1) in the core of the Central Zone. In general, greatest Cu-Au concentrations overlap lithological contacts characterized by contrasting ferromagnesian mineral content, thus forming redox gradients. Sulfur isotopic compositions emphasize the importance of fO₂ conditions in ore deposition. Sulfides in highly mineralized centers are characterized by moderately negative δ₃₄Ssulfide values (-10.66‰ to -7.84‰), whereas sulfides deposited distally show highly negative δ₃₄Ssulfide values (-17.13‰ to -4.03‰). These data suggest that the interaction of sulfate-rich (SO₄²-(aq)) fluids with varying amounts of Fe²⁺-bearing minerals in host rocks increased H₂S/SO₄²- leading to formation of reduced S, and precipitation of sulfide minerals. Trace elements such as V and As in host rocks and Eu²⁺ in hydrothermal garnet reflect the same redox influence. Vanadium and As are soluble under highly oxidizing conditions. The shift in oxidation state facilitates their incorporation in alteration minerals. Thus, highest V (>700ppm) and As (>40ppm) concentrations form halos distally to the redox gradients and ore bodies. Hydrothermal garnets near lithologic contacts contain excess Eu²⁺. In contrast to V and As, Eu²⁺ is soluble in reduced fO₂ conditions and precipitates close to the redox gradient. This study demonstrates that redox is the dominant control on ore deposition in the Central Zone. Recognizing redox changes may provide a valuable guide for future exploration in the Galore Creek district and perhaps other alkalic Cu-Au porphyry systems worldwide.

Kaati, Patrik. "Small-Scale Farmers Land Use and Socioeconomic Situation in the Mount Elgon District in Northwestern Kenya : A Minor Field Study - Combined Field Mapping and Interview." Thesis, Högskolan Dalarna, Geografi, 2011. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:du-10161.

Abstract:
This Minor Field Study was carried out during November and December in 2011 in the Mount Elgon District in Western Kenya. The objective was to examine nine small-scale farming household´s land use and socioeconomic situation when they have joined a non-governmental organization (NGO) project, which specifically targets small-scale farming households to improve land use system and socioeconomic situation by the extension of soil and water conservation measures. The survey has worked along three integral examinations methods which are mapping and processing data using GIS, semi structured interviews and literature studies. This study has adopted a theoretical approach referred to as political ecology, in which landesque capital is a central concept. The result shows that all farmers, except one, have issues with land degradation. However, the extent of the problem and also implemented sustainable soil and water conservation measures were diverse among the farmers. The main causes of this can both be linked to how the farmers themselves utilized their farmland and how impacts from the climate change have modified the terms of the farmers working conditions. These factors have consequently resulted in impacts on the informants’ socioeconomic conditions. Furthermore it was also registered that social and economic elements, in some cases, were the causes of how the farmers manage their farmland. The farmer who had no significant problem with soil erosion had invested in trees and opportunities to irrigate the farmland. In addition, it was also recorded that certain farmers had invested in particular soil and water conservation measures without any significant result. This was probably due to the time span these land measures cover before they start to generate revenue. The outcome of this study has traced how global, national and local elements exist in a context when it comes to the conditions of the farmers´ land use and their socioeconomic situation. The farmers atMt.Elgon are thereby a component of a wider context when they are both contributory to their socioeconomic situation, mainly due to their land management, and also exposed to core-periphery relationships on which the farmers themselves have no influence.

Abstract:
This research seeks to evaluate how the District Attorney Office of Brazil (Ministério Público) has been performing the innovating function of watching over the effective respect of the Public Power and relevant public services regarding the constitutionally right to an ecologically-balanced environment, attributed to it by the Federal Constitution of 1988, wish specific focus on environmental licensing processes. With such purpose, based on the case study methodology, a collection of data within official bodies (District Attorney of São Paulo State, Environmental Protection Agency of the State of São Paulo, Judiciary Power, Mine and Electricity Ministry, National Agency of Energy and Electricity) has been performed, as well as interviews with representative players of the involved segments, legislative and bibliographic reviews. Choice of case study was determined by the scope definition of space and time: researches were limited to the State of São Paulo, to the environmental licensing procedures conducted by the State Environmental Protection Agency and the performance of the District Attorney of São Paulo State, in the period comprehended between 2001 and 2006. Main findings include the fact that, due to the unique role of responsibilities and authority given to the District Attorney Office of Brazil by the Federal Constitution of 1988, it is responsible to promote the effectiveness of the environmental protection legislation as well as acting alternatively to the Judiciary System in the resolution of environmentally-based conflicts and the uncontroversial relevance of its role on the protection of the environment. However, when analyzing its role on the monitoring of environmental licensing processes conducted by the administrative licensing authorities, it was also identified that new conflicts with the Public Administration arise, with reflexes on all actors involved in the environmental licensing process. Purposes for its solution are analyzed in this work.

This kind of process is based in inquiring examination, which requires secrecy. To support the adversary practice here would, therefore, be an incongruent statement. After studying the evolution of the study of legal principles, we traced an epistemological division, to present the value and the reach of the laws constitutionally originated as fundamental rights. Now, appears the conflict between national security, represented by the secret investigation, against the due process of law, guarantied as an individual liberty. As an immediate consequence of the due process of law, we find the right to contest and the right of legal defense, concluding that the State of Law will only achieve its plenitude when all aspects of legitimate defense become effectively guarantied. Intending to penetrate profoundly within the inquisition instrument, centered as object of this essay; we drove through the roads traced by experts in Public Law, in innumerous attempts to define the series of acts and facts bonded in the heart of the Public Administration. The administrative process is a conquest of conceptual revolution, aroused after many debates, mainly when we determined the exact limits between the State functions. The Public District Attorney Office, once born to cohibit arbitrary acts, originated from the concentration of inquisitor and decision making powers in the hands of the sovereign one, now tends to insert itself in this power concentrating position. One of its most powerful instruments, the public prosecution, attributes to each member of the D.A. Office a compound of immense investigatory powers, a fact that per se, is enough to embrace the present theory. The conclusion arrived, giving prestige to modern public process policies and demanding the effectiveness of constitutional principles, lines itself in a parallel position to the world search for the materialization of human rights

Abstract:
The plots of Billy Budd and The Bonfire of the Vanities are organized entirely around a lawsuit. In The Pickwick Papers the trial is only a part, though an important one, of a series of related adventures in which the main characters of the novel participate. In the three novels there is a trial in which the accused is found guilty, although he is actually innocent. In The Posthumous Papers of the Club Pickwick, the author’s main purpose is to present the operation of the legal system, in which the modus operandi of unscrupulous lawyers, who rely only on cheating and deceiving methods, is atthe beginning of and determines the outcome of the lawsuit. In Billy Budd, an innocent is sentenced to death in order to preserve a supposed higher interest: the common good. In The Bonfire of the Vanities, political factors, personal interests, resentments and other worldly elements determine the outcome of the trial. In the three cases, the watchmaking mechanism that a lawsuit appears to be is completely overcome by factors outside it.
