Compounds of the form R<sub>2</sub>Sn(dmit) (H<sub>2</sub>dmit = dimercaptoisotrithione) (R = Me, Et, Bu, Oct, Ph, <I>o</I>-MeOC<sub>6</sub>H<sub>4</sub>. MeO<sub>2</sub>CCH<sub>2</sub>CH<sub>2</sub> and Pr<sup>i</sup>O<sub>2</sub>CCH<sub>2</sub>CH<sub>2</sub>) and RR'Sn(dmit) (R = Ph, R' = Me) were synthesised and characterised. Five of the compounds were further investigated using solid state <sup>13</sup>C and <sup>119</sup>Sn nmr and Mossbauer spectroscopy. A variety of functionalised 1,3-dithiole derived donor-π-acceptor systems linked by an alkenic bridge have been synthesised, the acceptor units being dicyanomethylene and cyanoimine. They exhibit intramolecular electron transfer from the electron donor moiety to the electron acceptor moiety. The presence of electron donating substituents on the 1,3-dithiole ring increases the degree of overall charge transfer; this process has been studied by UV-VIS spectroscopy and X-ray crystallography. Abstract:

The studies presented in this dissertation focus on elucidating key aspects of the interaction of metals and dithiolenes. The interaction is probed in a series of metallocene-dithiolene compounds (CpML where Cp = cyclopentadienyl, M = Mo, V, Ti and L = benezedithiolato and quinoxalinedithiolato) that have relatively simple electronic structures. The straightforward electronic structures were selected for assigning spectral features and correlating changes in electronic structure with changes in geometry, specifically the dithiolene fold angle. Abstract:

A range of substituted l,3-dithiol-2-ylidene systems have been prepared. These species have, subsequently, been converted to nitroso derivatives. The role of the 4-, 5- and ylidene subtituents in stabilising the nitroso-alkene moiety thus obtained has been investigated. X-ray molecular crystal data which show that these species are stabilised by intramolecular interactions are presented. Conversion of the nitroso derivatives to their thionitroso analogues has been attempted, but was unsuccessful. A selection of l-(l,3-dithiol-2-ylidene)-prop-2-ene systems have been prepared.
