This chapter combines the data from all the workers (150 different people across 35 diverse occupations) whose stories have been shared in this book. From the examination of the characteristics of specific jobs that influence mobile communication at work, four categories emerge: autonomy, mobility, task variability, and communication focus. People who have low autonomy in doing their work typically have predictable times when they have mobile access—breaks—but spend the bulk of their days without that access. Workers with a high degree of autonomy are reachable more often, but their access isn’t necessarily predictable: they might be in a closed-door meeting. It’s acceptable to use mobile devices when employees enjoy higher autonomy, more mobility, and task variability. But people who do repetitive jobs, work in a single location, and have little autonomy are more subject to managerial control and have fewer times where their mobile use is considered acceptable.

Korean Christianity is known around the world for rapid growth, conservative theological orientation, participation in political struggles (Japanese occupation, divided into two Koreas, military dictatorships), and missionary spirit, as well as schism, materialism, and secularization. This reputation is intimately and inextricably tied to how faith communities in Korea and Korean diaspora use the Bible in their religiocultural, sociopolitical, and immigrant contexts. In this Handbook, noted theologically diverse scholars offer representative thinking on creative inculturations of the Bible in Korea. Some conservatively align with received Western orthodoxy. Others have a sense of complementarity that informs distinctive accents of Korean Christianity, the long-standing religious traditions of Korea, the diversity of Korea’s global diaspora, and the learning of non-Koreans attentive to the impact of the Bible in Korea. Together, this volume presents an exquisite tapestry of Korean biblical interpretation in the making.

Effective cancer communication is crucial for both clinicians and patients, yet is often suboptimal. Health literacy—the ability to access, comprehend, evaluate, and communicate health information—is a latent factor that may contribute to ineffective medical interactions. Limited health literacy has been associated with significant negative health outcomes and higher medical costs. Given the compelling evidence that ethnically diverse populations are particularly vulnerable, we use a narrative case example—a hypothetical clinical meeting between an oncologist and a newly-diagnosed patient—to highlight how patient risk factors for low health literacy (e.g. age, language, distress, etc.) may be amplified by clinician and contextual factors (e.g. using medical jargon, complexity of patient educational materials, etc.). Finally, we re-imagine the same clinical encounter and illustrate how some simple strategies could ameliorate the effects of low health literacy and facilitate communication and patient decision-making.

This chapter reviews issues of psychosocial care in diverse communities. In the face of ongoing inequity, despite the Equality Act (2010), it analyses the concept of access as it impacts differentially on people from diverse communities. Suggesting that patient leadership, co-production, and compassionate community models of care are all vehicles by which to improve psychosocial care in the face of diminished resources and increased demand as a result of rising numbers of people dying and the need to respond to all who are dying based on need not on diagnosis or social circumstance. Despite a plethora of policy documents and legislation there are still significant numbers of people who are unable to access palliative care in general and specialist palliative care in particular.

<p dir="ltr">Scientific research and development are essential in the government, private, and academic sectors of American society. Scientific collections, both living and non-living, are critical components of the U.S. government’s R&D infrastructure, essential for ensuring national security, protecting the public’s health and safe food supply, promoting innovation and economic growth, and protecting the environment. To pursue their diverse long-term missions, U.S. departments and agencies have created and preserve scientific collections to address new and unpredictable challenges to society and to establish long-term baseline histories for the analysis of change, often using new analytical technologies. Federal scientific collections serve the public good by providing access to objects of scientific value regardless of where, when, by whom, or for what reasons they were originally collected and preserved. </p><p dir="ltr">The White House National Science and Technology Council’s Interagency Working Group on Scientific Collections (IWGSC) has, since 2005, convened representatives from 24 Federal departments and agencies that rely on scientific collections. IWGSC has produced a series of studies, reports, and other information resources aimed at improving policies, transparency, accessibility, management, and the assessment of costs and benefits related to Federal scientific collections. This report summarizes these achievements and the IWGSC's future directions, and presents 21 case studies showing how Federal scientific collections have served the nation in diverse areas of American life. </p>

Philosophically speaking, the question “What are the ethical implications of understanding breast cancer?” raises a host of issues, including informed consent, risk assessment, and access to breast cancer care. What we find is that, initially, there are adequate guidelines for informed consent, adequate efforts to develop risk assessment measures, and a decent level of access to breast cancer care in the United States. But things can be improved from an ethical standpoint. Upon reflection, the informed consent process would benefit from a more explicit discussion of uncertainty in breast cancer medicine and the ways breast cancer patients make decisions about their care. Risk assessments would benefit from a more personalized approach. Access to breast cancer care could be improved by continued studies of the diverse forces that limit access to proper breast cancer care.

Data from the Perceptions of Democracy Survey (PODS) point to three broad findings. First, most people from a diverse array of countries around the world lack confidence in the performance of their political institutions and their access to them, and they are more dissatisfied than satisfied with their governments. Second, self-identified minorities, women and low-income groups tend to perceive more obstacles to access and are generally more doubtful about institutional performance. Third, expert views and popular perceptions about how political institutions are doing do not always align. People are generally much more sceptical than experts. This report is the first in a planned series. Future reports will focus on the analysis of some of the other questions in the survey, which focus on political activities and engagement, access to public goods, beliefs about society and government, opinions on how laws should be made, and a broad range of values.

Leslie A. Schwindt-Bayer and Santiago Alles argue that the influx of women into Latin American legislatures has been substantial, but once in office, women have struggled to attain full access to political power. They present a statistical analysis that shows that the main explanations for variation in women’s representation lie with gender quotas and party system fragmentation. They show that women in national legislatures have brought women’s issues to the legislative arena, and they provide a new analysis showing that female legislators are more supportive of liberal gender equality, abortion, and divorce laws. However, they argue that women have not gained access to diverse committee leadership posts or served in top chamber leadership posts to the same extent as men. Finally, they show that the presence of women in legislatures has had important effects on citizen support for female political leaders, political engagement and participation, and supportiveness of representative democracy.

The previous three chapters described three central problems that recur when courts have to deal with religious litigation: the teleological problem, epistemological problem, and ontological problem. All three problems are both the occasion for disputes, and (taken together) exacerbate other disputes, bringing the courts themselves into the fray, preventing them from playing the role of standing above the conflict. So, what is to be done? This chapter proposes a reconstructed practice-dependent theory of human rights that addresses issues of religion. It discusses how human dignity provides a normative foundation for the system of human rights as a whole. The proposed theory accepts that human rights law and human rights practice beyond the legal sphere is pluralistic, and that building this pluralism into human rights theory accurately reflects the diverse nature of human rights, including judicial adjudication and religious narratives within that system.

Children living in special circumstances due to migration or refugee status, or being of Gypsy, Roma, or Traveller ethnicity, have extra health needs and difficulty in accessing universal and specialist health services. Migrant, refugee, and Traveller children belong to diverse ethnic and social groups, but share characteristics which increase their need for targeted health promotion. All groups are subsections of the population with poor self-reported health and access to health services, and higher numbers of dependent children. It is well recognized that they experience discrimination and social exclusion which adversely impacts health. There is overlap between groups, for example, refugees are migrants who have left their country of origin to avoid persecution, and Roma are migrants who are of Gypsy ethnicity. This chapter identifies the reasons why children from these groups require focused health promotion; it summarizes their health needs, describes interventions to improve their physical and mental health through the child health programmes, and discusses factors that influence their ability to access preventive services.

Queer men’s cultures of intimacy have long been sites of fierce contestation.Indeed, debates have raged for decades over issues such as monogamy, safer sex, sexual racism and gay marriage. The introduction of the smartphone in 2008 only intensified these debates whilst also raising a further set of questions which are explored in this open access book. Through interviews with a diverse group of 43 queer men about their smartphone mediated intimacies,Digital Intimaciesreveals that queer men use their smartphones, not simply to arrange intimate encounters, but more specifically to gain a sense of control over the parts of their intimate lives that make them feel most vulnerable. For instance, some use messaging apps to gain a sense of control over intimate conversations that they feel too vulnerable to have in person. Others use the ‘block’ function on dating apps to feel in control of the racism and transphobia they are vulnerable to on these apps. Digital Intimaciestherefore illuminates not only hitherto underexplored aspects of queer men’s cultures of intimacy but crucially also brings into view previously obscured cultural dynamics, gaining insight into the historical moments in which they occur. This chapter explores some of the ways in which male dancers who performed female style dance (or had performed female style dance prior to the author's fieldwork) have been pushing at dominant conceptual and physical boundaries of gender and sex by expressing, embodying, and representing male femininity in diverse ways on- and offstage. It argues that male dancers, in so doing, have been contributing to the ongoing cultural production of tradition and maintaining cultural space for males to access and make visible the magnetic power of femaleness. The ways male dancers negotiated boundaries of gender are shown through the ways they talk about various cultural pressures, indicating ways they contend with official discourses of gender.

We describe features of programs and current research and evaluation, highlighting those that reference dimensions of relational well-being. Finally, we discuss areas for future research and implications for practice centered on the relational and collective well-being of diverse young adults in civic and national service settings.

Using the insider/outsider debate as a starting point, the chapter examines the position of being in-between the insider and the outsider, the partial insider. It also examines how the researcher can have a multiple subjectivity incorporating diverse identifications. The author, a Sunni Muslim female German of Moroccan origin, reflects on the implications of these statuses for doing field research in a context that is culturally familiar but is not her own society or culture, Jordan. The chapter concludes with a discussion of some of the ethical considerations that occurred during the author’s field research.

The social processes that underlie cultural norms in behaviour and beliefs are discussed with examples of how mental health community services must be alert to unconscious and other forms of discrimination. Understanding each unique individual in the context of their families, communities, shared history, and how they see the world around them is the core task for mental health workers. Implications for practice, team composition, and training are explored, including dealing with racism towards staff as well as from within services and institutions. The legal framework of the Equalities Act in the UK is used as a guide.

In the course of Jewish emancipation in Germany from the 18th century to World War I, many Jewish students chose to study law. The subject offered access to diverse fields of activity, and it contained a liberal promise of equality. However, this promise was fulfilled only slowly until 1914 and was broken by National Socialist Germany. But as long as the prospect of emancipation still seemed realistic, some branches of jurisprudence proved particularly attractive, such as Roman legal history, legal theory and comparative law, commercial and international business law, and, not least, the new labor and social law. The contributions in this volume, the result of a conference at the Forschungskolleg Humanwissenschaften in Bad Homburg in May 2019, attempt to explore the reasons for these preferences.

This chapter explores the ecological regime of slavery and the land-use practices employed by farmers across the antebellum South. Despite the diverse ecologies and crop regimes of the region, most southern farmers employed a set of extensive agricultural techniques that kept the cost of farming down and helped circumvent natural limits on crop production and stock-raising. The use of shifting cultivation, free-range animal husbandry, and slaves to perform erosion control masked the environmental impacts of farmers’ actions, at least temporarily. Debates over westward expansion during the sectional crisis of the 1850s were not just about the extension of slavery, they also reflected practical concerns regarding access to new lands and fresh soil. Both were necessary for the continued profitability of farming in the South.

There has been growing support for the implementation of evidence-based practice in community mental health settings to address the complex needs of diverse young clients. Evidence-based practice encompasses psychometrically sound assessments and empirically supported treatments with appreciation of the culture of communities in which they are provided. This chapter reviews the background of the community mental health movement, describes community mental health settings and the current status of youth evidence-based practices in community care contexts, and explores barriers to and prospects for bringing tested practices for youths into community-based care.

This edited volume, Research in Deaf Education: Contexts, Challenges, and Considerations, provides readers with critical foundational information with which to view contemporary research in deaf education. Deaf education as a field is experiencing a high degree of turnover in its researchers, as well as major shifts in how deaf individuals access information and engage with society as a whole. To conduct research in deaf education includes a need to be mindful of the influence of context as well as the challenges of conducting research with a low-incidence and diverse population. Together with a chapter on history, as well as how the population has changed in recent decades, chapters in this book seek to provide readers with important context and strategies for the implementation of a range of research methodologies. Deaf education research utilizes a great range of research methodologies, and while this volume does not address all possible approaches, it does cover diverse research perspectives, from action research to large-scale surveys to multi-level modeling. In addition, several chapters in this volume address issues that are related to research measures themselves, particularly those that incorporate multiple communication modalities in their content or design. The volume concludes with a thematic analysis of the volume as a whole, offering cross cutting perspectives on how deaf education as a field can move forward in a responsive, ethical, authentic, and rigorous manner.

This chapter suggests that focus groups are a useful ethnographic tool in the study of governing elites. Focus groups provide an alternative way of ‘being there’ when the rules about secrecy and access prevent participant observation. The chapter describes the job of prime ministers’ chiefs of staff before explaining the research design, the preparations for the focus group sessions, and the strategies used to manage the dynamics of a diverse group that included former political enemies and factional rivals. It outlines the approach to analysis and interpretation before reviewing the strengths and weaknesses of focus groups for research into political and administrative elites. It concludes that focus groups are a valuable tool for making tacit knowledge explicit, but they must be located in a broader framework and be part of a larger toolkit.

In globalized economies, organizations invest significant resources in managing talent in their diverse workforce. Presumably, talent and diversity management are complementary and interrelated, sharing the similar aim to nurture the skills, attributes, and career progression of the workforce. However, the two practices are also at odds. Talent management has been defined by an exclusionary paradigm focused on developing an elite segment of the workforce. We explore the problematic effect of talent management on equality. Talent management could foreclose how perceptions of “talent” are deeply inflected in gendered, classist, and racialized ways. The complex experiences of minority groups in gaining access to and progression within organizations should be considered. We discuss how talent management could be used to catalyze equality in organizations and suggest future research on the intersection between equality, diversity, and talent management.

A review of history of mental health and the current needs and limited available services in the Caribbean and Latin America will be provided. The chapter will use the example of, yet primitive, experience of implementing telemedicine or telehealth in the region to infer the potential utility of technological means in bridging the existing mental health gap. Although this mode of treatment has not been implemented yet, horizons for implementation of telemental health are open in this region, as it promises increased access to mental health treatment to those who need it the most. Future steps will have address cost-effectiveness and cultural acceptability unique to this part of the world.
