Full textENGLISH ABSTRACT: Organisation development is an emerging behavioural science discipline. Its goals are to make organisations more effective and to develop individual potential. For this reason organisation development provides a set of methodologies to bring about organisational change and improvement systematically. The techniques introduced by organisation development adhere to a set frame of values. This research proposes that organisation development, as an evolving discipline, can depend on the management of diversity as a tool for change under certain conditions. Organisations are faced with the problem of surviving a fiercely competitive world. This they have to do with a workforce that is becoming increasingly diverse. Diversity as highlighted in this study, is a complex phenomenon. It does not entail only race and ethnicity as is sometimes believed, but also incorporates aspects like cultural differences and individual preferences. The traditional view of diversity has been assimilation, where race and other differences were standardised in a type of melting pot. In real life groups want to retain their individuality and this is being increased by today's non-hierarchical, collaborate and flexible management styles. The challenge is therefore to acknowledge differences and then to get the same and even more productivity from a diverse workforce as had been the case with the homogeneous workforce. This must be done without artificial programmes, standards or barriers. The limited data strongly suggest that efforts to manage diversity, as undertaken by leading organisations, have been fairly successful in improving performance regarding productivity, absenteeism and turnover. If diversity is ignored or improperly managed, it could become a detractor from performance. On the other hand, if diversity is managed well, organisations will be able to make diversity an asset to performance. This research shows that the management of diversity can and should be used to change organisation culture and to promote satisfactory performance. In this regard the monoculture of the South African Police Services is described as an example of an organisation culture that hampers the personal growth of its members and thus leads to ineffectiveness. This study identifies the main characteristics of the so-called police culture that prevents the organisations performance from being effective. It does so in the light of recent quantitative and qualitative research. Out of this a framework is developed that can be used to implement the management of diversity. The study also proposes proposals to utilise the management of diversity as an organisational development technique. For this purpose a measurement instrument is developed. The dissertation concludes with an exposition of strategies that the South African Police Service can implement on individual, group and organisation level, to manage diversity effectively.

Full textENGLISH ABSTRACT: The researcher is a minister in a rural congregation in the town of Kirkwood in the Eastern Cape. A growing diversity among congregants became obvious. It led to conflict and challenged the leadership of the congregation to deal with it in a constructive way in order to be a missional congregation that strives to focus on the missio Dei. In order to help the congregation to better understand where it comes from and how it can be used to participate in God’s work in the Sundays River Valley, the researcher described the identity and culture of the congregation as well as the transformation processes that are having such an influence on everybody. The research question is: How can the diversity between congregants be understood, described en used? In Chapter 2 the identity of the congregation is described. Attention is given to Louw’s identity 1996 analysis of the congregation. Afterwards the influence of globalization on the identity of the congregation is described and how it increased the diversity of the congregation. Ethnographic research described the culture of the congregation (Chapter 3). The researcher discussed Armour and Browning’s (2000) Systems theory in Chapter 4. Chapter 5 described the results of empirical research that depicted five of the reigning systems in the congregatation. The data is interpreted and discussed. At the end of each chapter the researcher outlined conclusions. In Chapter 6 these conclusions and the findings of the empirical research are brought to a point on the basis of which a strategy with practical and theological points of departure for the ministry are suggested. The purpose is to guide the congregation to use their diversity in order to fulfill their missional vocation.

Full textThis thesis examines the way in which the recognition of diversity can be applied as a strategy in South African education to erode the bitter legacy of colonial education. The establishment of formal education, built on a western foundation, was set up against a background of colonisation as a process aimed at political subjugation and economic exploitation. It is especially how education was utilised as a tool of colonisation in order to facilitate the above-mentioned subjugation and exploitation through a process of cultural subjugation that will be placed under the spotlight. In chapter three, the process of cultural subjugation outlined in chapter two, is related to the establishment and development of colonial education in South Africa and also how Apartheid was a form of internal colonialism with apartheid education continuing the process of cultural subjugation for political control and economic exploitation. Colonial subjugation was, however, not passively accepted by the subjugated. From the outset, subjugation spawned resistance and would eventually grow into large-scale opposition aimed at the overall casting off of the colonial yoke. This opposition eventually led to the political freedom of 1994. The political freedom of 1994 and the judicial framework for the dismantling of the legacy of colonial education would not, on its own or overnight, be able to dismantle the effects of centuries of subjugation. The dismantling of the inheritance of colonialism, together with colonial education, requires deliberate and constructive action. Such a process will have to include putting an end to the subjugation of the numerous voices characteristic of South Africa. Ending this subjugation does not mean the continuation of a position alongside and beneath a socially constructed dominant, but rather a process (a struggle?) where it can take its place impartially, alongside and equal to other voices in the greater diverse whole. It is against the above background that teaching strategies for the handling of diversity will be critically examined and for which recommendations are made for strategies, within the South African context, through which the dismantling of the colonial legacy of cultural subjugation for political control and economic exploitation can take place.

Full textThe efficiency of biogas reactors depends on the substrate utilisation by the involved microbial community. However, the exact composition of the microbial biocoenosis was rudimental characterized. In this study an overview of the microbial diversity in different anaerobic biogas reactor types (completly stirred tank reactor, leach bed reactor, fixed bed anaerobic filter) is given for the fermentation of different substrates (corn-, carrots-, triticale whole crop silage as renewable raw materials, partly in co-fermentation with cattle liquid manure). The characterisation of the microbial community was conducted via the construction of 16S rDNA libraries for both, methanogenic Archaea and fermentative Bacteria. Individual taxonomic groups within the 16S rDNA libraries were determined by means of amplified rDNA restriction analysis (ARDRA). The taxonomic classification of these groups was performed via a phylogenetic analysis of representative 16S rDNA sequences. In total six 16S rDNA libraries with 627 clones were developed. Together 223 taxonomic groups were detected; from these 114 was assigned to the domain Archaea and further 109 was assigned to the domain Bacteria. Within the examined biogas reactors a high diversity was found within the hydrogenotrophic methane producing Archaea, acetotrophic methane producing Archaea appears only with a comparatively small diversity. From the domain Bacteria fermentative species of phylum Firmicutes especially of the genus Clostridium were found to be dominant in the microbial community.

Full textThe dissertation deals with the interplay between the aging of society and growing social diversity, drawing on Berlin as a case study. In six papers, the dissertation develops methodological approaches to scrutinize the interplay of age(ing) and diversity and presents new empirical findings from qualitative and quantitative empirical research. Based on the empirical findings, the dissertation shows that prevalent societal images of old age do not do justice to the complex life situations of older people and, accordingly, the institutional handling of older people’s diversity is inadequate. In addition, the thesis develops a spatial perspective as methodological approach to analyze the interplay between age(ing) and diversity. Employing this spatial perspective, the thesis examines three empirical cases: The use of public parks by older people, relocation plans of older people, and the importance of spatial proximity for older people’s social networks in the neighborhood. The dissertation thus makes a scientific contribution on an empirical as well as on an analytical and methodological level: First, it provides in-depth insights into the life situations of older people with different backgrounds. On this basis, the thesis questions the implicit norming of middle age as an objective perspective and underlines the necessity of thinking diversity in a multidimensional way. In this respect, the paper argues for linking the concepts of intersectionality and superdiversity in order to differentiate more precisely within social groups. A spatial perspective allows an open view on diversity and makes it possible to connect the previously separate fields of research on diversity and gerontology. The work concludes with recommendations for policy and planning

Full textThe ecologically important small remnant habitats are becoming fewer in modern agriculture due to the intensification of agricultural landscapes that have resulted in an increasingly fragmented landscape. In order to provide an ideal conservation framework for small habitats, such as midfield islets, several studies about the organisms on the islets, their diversity and distribution are needed. In this study I investigated the diversity of mosses and lichens on open midfield islets with and without shrubs and trees in an open and a forest-dominated landscape. The analysis of species diversity in the study suggests that, overall; there are more species of mosses and lichens in the open landscape in relation to the forest-dominated landscape, and on the opened islets lacking shrub and tree vegetation. These environments consist of dry and rocky soils and overgrow relatively slowly, which is favourable for mosses and lichens. There was no significant correlation between diversity and size of the midfield islets or their distance to forest. The number of species in a habitat may depend on regional species pool and the number of potential colonizers but also local processes. Furthermore, it is important to mention that the study suggests that the diversity of mosses and lichens is influenced by the conditions on the midfield islands, such as shrub and tree cover. These conditions, combined with a variation within these small habitats can create good conditions for a landscape with high diversity.

Full textWe study metric model theory and Polish groups as automorphism groups of separable metric structures. We expand upon the infinitary continuous logic treated in [12, 11, 23, 27] and give a new proof of the Omitting Types Theorem of infinitary continuous logic. We also find a new way of calculating the type distance of infinitary continuous logic. Furthermore, we show an infinitary version of the Ryll-Nardzewski Theorem. We also study the Roelcke completion of a Polish group and give amodel theoretical characterisation of locally Roelcke precompact Polish groups. We do this by showing that the Roelcke completion of a Polish group can be considered as a certain set of types in metric model theory. Furthermore, we develop the model theory of the Urysohn metric space U. We show that its theory TU eliminates quantifiers, that U is a prime model and that any separable model of TU is a disjoint union of isomorphic copies of U. Moreover, we show that the isometry group of U is locally Roelcke precompact by applying our result above. This was already known, but our proof is new. Finally, we study the Urysohn diversity U. Diversities are a natural generalisation of metric spaces, where positive values are assigned not just to pairs, but to all finite subsets. We develop the model theory ofU and show, among other things, that its automorphism group Aut(U) is locally Roelcke precompact, again by applying our result above. We also show that Aut(U) is a universal Polish group and that it has a dense conjugacy class. Lastly, we study the automorphism group of the rational Urysohn diversity UQ and show that Aut(UQ) has ample generics - a property with many strong implications

Full textThe purpose of this study is to describe and statistically analyse the relationship between the board diversity and CSD (corporate social disclosure) with innovative firms as mediating variable. As a CSD contains several categories this study focuses on the social aspects: product responsibility, labour practices and decent work, society and human rights. In order to achieve the study's purpose, a quantitative study with deductive approach has been carried out. Data have been collected from the GRI (Global reporting initiative) database in which atotal of 202 multinational firms, which have outlined their CSD according to the most recent recommendations made by GRI, have been derived and thereby formed the study's sample. Data have been analysed by means of a structural equation model and a path analysis. The result indicates that there is a positive relation between board diversity, in terms of education and gender, and innovative firms. Furthermore, the study indicates a relation between innovative firms and CSD regarding all social aspects except product responsibility. Thestrongest relation exists between the various social aspects in the CSD. The mediating effect of innovative firms is lower than expected in the study.

Full textThe purpose of the study is to describe and analyze how audit staff feel that team composition regarding visible diversity in the form of generational affiliation, ethnicity and gender in audit teams affect their job satisfaction. Teamwork is a central part of the audit staffs' work. Previous research has shown that diversity in teams on one hand can lead to poorer cohesion and communication in teams, while diversity in teams on the other hand can lead to more perspectives and better ability to solve complex problems. The qualitative study applies an interview method and has mainly a deductive approach. Primary data has been collected through semi-structured interviews with 18 audit staff. The empirical data has been analyzed thematically. The study indicates that the respondents' experience of how visible diversity in audit teams affects their job satisfaction differs. The study contributes to the literature by identifying aspects that can explain how audit staffs' job satisfaction is affected by working in visibly diversified teams. The study's practical contribution is mainly directed to audit firms, as an increased understanding of how visible diversity in audit teams affects audit staffs' job satisfaction is important in order to form audit teams in an optimal way.

Full textThe genetic variability of the North African populations has been studied through the analysis of different genomic regions in order to understand both the analysed populations and the dynamics of the genome. The obtained results allow us to verify different hypotheses about the population history of this region including the parallel and independent effect of the Neolithic wave of advance from the Middle East and along both Mediterranean coasts; and the effect of Arabization phenomena. We also tried to estimate the North African male genetic contribution to the Iberian peninsula and detected Sub-Saharian genetic influences to the North African peoples. Moreover, the typing of genetic markers with different evolutionary rates on the Y chromosome allowed us to demonstrate that variation in microsatellites is deeply structured by genetic background on the non-recombining region of the human Y chromosome.
