Brown algae are important primary producers and habitat formers in coastal environments and are believed to have evolved multicellularity independently of the other eukaryotes. The phaeoviruses that infect them form a stable lysogenic relationship with their host via genome integration, but have only been extensively studied in two genera: Ectocarpus and Feldmannia. In this study I aim to improve our understanding of the genetic diversity, host range and distribution of phaeoviruses. The picophytoplankton is composed of three main groups of organisms: two genera of cyanobacteria, Prochlorococcus and Synechococcus, and a third group, the picoeukaryotes.

(Aquatic Health)<br>The relationships between water quality variables and phytoplankton diversity in the Hartbeespoort Dam were assessed spatially and temporally from February 2011 to March 2012 to evaluate the effects of the water quality variables on cyanobacterial bloom (Microcystis aeruginosa) hence aquatic macrophytes growth (Eichhornia crassipes) in the dam. Variables measured using standard methods included; temperature, pH, electrical conductivity, total suspended solids, dissolved oxygen, nitrate, nitrite, total phosphorous , ammonium, trace metals, chlorophyll-a and the phytopl

Abstract:
The phytoplankton samples from 45 localities in Vysočina region were collected in 2009. Species composition and relative abundance of species were studied; ecological factors like pH, conductivity, temperature, water transparency and dissolved ions were measured. Ecological indices (Shannon and Simpson index of diversity) were calculated and compared with other ecological factors. Checklist of all species present in Vysočina region was made. There were found 262 species and 4 species new for the Czech Republic.

The symbiotic relationships often represent not only the permanent cohabitation of two organisms, but they can evolve and change over time. Many papers published so far focused on the the specificity of lichens, characterising both highly specific species and those that can establish a symbiosis with many algal genotypes. In this second case we can imagine the possibility of a photobiont exchange during the life of lichen - the dynamics of lichen symbiosis. In this thesis I compared the occurence and diversity of photobionts within the thalli of lichens growing on the disturbed localities and

Algae is proven potential resources for eco-friendly bio-diesel production. But research efforts are still required for worthwhile results. The present study aims to utilize locally available algae biomass resources for bio-diesel production. The samples were collected from the air, water depositories and soil within the Institute campus. Further purification, culture, morphological identification, preservation, lipid extraction, transesterification and bio-diesel properties estimation were also conducted. In the first set of experiment, water strains were collected, isolated up to the molecu

To initiate algal virus research in the Bay of Quinte, three stations were sampled biweekly throughout 2011. By targeting algal virus DNA polymerase, major capsid protein genes (MCP), and a Microcystis aeruginosa cyanophage (Ma-LMM01) tail sheath protein gene, PCR amplification revealed diverse and unique Phycodnaviruses (viruses of eukaryotic algae) and cyanophage. When analysed statistically, patterns of virus abundance suggested that the seasonality of any one virus cannot be generalised to predict that of other viruses, even among closely related viruses. This study also demonstrated a str

Liu (2006) had discussed the taxonomic problem of Yonagunia from Taiwan, but her study results were largely relying on rbcL sequence analyses. In this study I focused the genus Yonagunia from Taiwan to infer the phylogenetic relationships between Yonagunia and Grateloupia and to clarify the development of auxiliary cell ampullar filaments by molecular analyses and morphological observation to improve the species diversity and distribution of Y
