Kant is often viewed as the exemplar of the Enlightenment tendency to reduce religion to morality, to eliminate religious appeals to mystery or to supernatural action, and to insist – in Kant's own words – that we ourselves must make ourselves ‘into whatever, in a moral sense, whether good or evil’, we are to become. His entire philosophy in some ways epitomizes what Hans Blumenberg has called the ‘project of self–assertion’, the ‘essence of which [can be] formulated as the “program of antidivine self–deification”’. This article engages with the work of Oliver Davies to ask about the role of divine transcendence in Davies’ project of ‘Transformation Theology’. While Davies argues that a theology of transcendence paints a picture of a remote God, this article asks whether this is an accurate reading of the tradition of thinking about divine transcendence. The tradition, this article argues, has commonly depicted transcendence as that feature of divinity that enables, rather than hinders, divine agency in the world. As a result, the article asks of Davies whether a conscious positive engagement with the con

Political theorists have long disagreed about what Rousseau's account of conscience means. While most approaches to that account focus on the “Profession of Faith of the Savoyard Vicar,” this essay focuses on another aspect of Emile, the development of conscience in Emile himself. First, I argue that conscience is transformed from problem to solution when self-love is transformed, first into gratitude, then, with the aid of religion, rhetoric, and imagination, into duty. Those who insist that conscience is rooted in passion are right, though that passion is not necessarily low. Second, those w

Divine healing sometimes sparks fervent debates among Bible-believing individuals about its central role in the Bible. The undeniable fact is that divine healing occurred in both the Old and New Testaments, indicating that it is not in conflict with the teachings of the Bible. He is a compassionate Healer, a Savior, addressing both physical and spiritual ailments. For Strauss, Hegel’s construal of divine personality as subject rather than substance amounts to something like a rejection of the divine personality (traditionally understood as calling forth religious faith).

In Religion within the Bounds of Bare Reason, Kant claims that we may need to invoke divine aid in order to explain how a person can change from evil to good. Kant’s language is a bit curious; why does he not more clearly assert, either that we must posit divine grace, or that we may not? The explanation is this: if we affirm that God grants aid, then this could convince people to passively await it or to think, upon becoming good, that they are part of a special elect. Dante Alighieri’s Divine Comedy can be read as a journey of human knowledge from the darkness of evil to the bright vision of God. In this sense, it is a journey that culminates in a divine contemplation for which the soul has to prepare itself by moving away from evil and cleansing itself of all imper-fections caused by sin. For this reason, before contemplating God in Paradise, Dante must know evil in Hell and purify himself of it in Purgatory. This thesis investigates the construction and reflection of gender identities in the religious sphere, namely the gods, their worshippers, and the rituals which link them. The introduction explores how deploying gender as a tool for investigating the texts reveals the author's own perceptions of how male and female operate within his discourse, and considers how these perceptions relate to the world beyond the text. The poor are more vulnerable to supply shocks, hence aggressively stabilizing inflation is costly in terms of their consumption volatility. Abstract:
COVID-19 was a great challenge for Orthodox Christians worldwide. As all natural disasters in modernity, the pandemic was explained and combatted on the basis of science. There could be no doubt that death, pain, suffering, despair, imprisonment (the quarantine can indeed be experienced as an imprisonment) are opportunities for the Church to bear witness to Christ. Abstract:
Paleontology, the study of ancient life, has always drawn me in—the pull of the past and the need to understand the Earth beneath my feet are irresistible. Imagining the life back in the ancient bones, the stories those fossils could tell is truly awe-inspiring. Prior to coming to Montana, I volunteered at the Morrison Natural History Museum in Colorado with Curator Matthew Mossbrucker, who took me under his wing and introduced me to the wonders of the ancient world.
