This paper contributes toward an interdisciplinary Renewal moral theology that deals with this (apologetic) question: how do we speak of divine assistance in human moral life in a modern scientific context that shuns the idea of God intervening and acting in this world? In answering this question, it is argued that, while John Hare’s Kantian ethics makes a persuasive and meaningful case for divine moral assistance as providence and grace against a naturalistic context, through James K.A. Most scholars (mainly English and French) favour an anthropological referent while a minority (some English and most German scholars) supports a divine referent. This study proposes that 14,38 refers to the divine spirit and that, in the broader context of Mark 13, the intended comparison is not of an inner human struggle but the contrast between two kinds of human existence. Members of the Jesus group can rely on divine assistance in testing situations while non-members have no access to this divine resource.

Abstract:
In The Spirit and the Letter Augustine claims that grace not only avoids abrogating human freedom it actually establishes free will. His claim raises some intriguing questions. What sort of freedom is it that can be established only by the influence of another agent—in this case, God—and what sort of bondage is it that is overcome by grace? If we remain exclusively within Augustine's theological discourse, the answers come straightforwardly and by now have a ring of familiarity. The freedom in question is the state of loving God over and above his worldly and time-bound creations, fulfilling (

Abstract This article takes a new approach to the study of narrative technique in Chariton’s Callirhoe. Following Chariton’s self-identification at the start of the novel, considerable emphasis is placed upon the narrator, who makes his presence felt throughout the narrative and whose role is further underscored by self-reflexive comments about storytelling made by various characters. This, combined with the fact that the novelist appears to have delegated all responsibility for the shaping of the plot to personified deities, allows the author to remain ‘concealed’ for most of the narrative, t

Abortion is a complex and controversial moral and theological issue, especially in the context of the teachings of the Catholic Church. This study aims to examine the Catholic Church's views on abortion with a moral and theological approach, based on Sacred Scripture, Church Tradition, and Magisterium documents such as Evangelium Vitae and Gaudium et Spes. In the light of Catholic teaching, abortion is seen as an intrinsically wrong act because it takes innocent human life from the moment of conception. The study also examines the anthropological and ethical foundations underlying the Church's

Greek ambassadors who were granted an audience before the Persian King were required to observe a certain form of court ritual. Although the Persian proper name for this ritual has since been lost to us, the Greeks called this act of homage proskynēsis; a term normally understood to refer to the act of “falling down” and prostrating oneself before the king. At the same time, the Greeks employed a gesture also called proskynēsis, which was performed when addressing a divine entity. These two acts, while different in their functions, shared the same name on the basis that their outward appearanc

AbstractIn this article, I provide a detailed analysis of the poems on the Lord's Supper by the Dutch statesman and man of letters, Constantijn Huygens (1596–1687). Between 1642 and 1684, he wrote eighteen poems on this subject, sixteen in Dutch and two in Latin. The type of poem varies from pithy epigrams to sonnets, through to longer poems over fifty lines in length, replete with well-conceived poetic tropes. To date, these poems have received little scholarly attention. Huygens was a lifelong member of the Reformed church and his poetry considers themes which are central to Reformed theolog

Since the 1970's, many foreign oracle-bone scholars have proposed a new view that the charges are never questions, or at least are generally not questions. Whether or not the charges are actually questions is a very important question bearing not only on oracle bone studies, but also on research on ancient divination and on ancient Chinese grammar.
