Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation focuses on the occlusion of 'other' voices within the discourse of colonialism and slavery. The work juxtaposes four texts from the seventeenth and twentiethcenturies, respectively, as a way of examining the continued weight of past history on our postcolonial present. The theoretical framework is drawn from postcolonial and postmodern literary theory with an emphasis on the problematics of speaking for the 'other' in twentiethcentury literary revisions.

This thesis investigates the generation of Christian meaning via the performance of instrumental music (IM) separate from text within Christian worship. IM is non-verbal, purely qualitative, and lacking in conventional theological reference. Its meaning is multivalent and relies heavily upon the sensory, imaginative, emotional, and transcendent realms of human experience. Within logo-centric views of Christian meaning-generation, IM can be perceived as contentious and tends to be treated predominantly as an accompaniment to text or ritual activity, a cue, or a soundtrack to visual presentati

Research on forgiveness has been expanding rapidly in the last decade with a subset of studies looking at how religious people forgive. A discrepancy persists between Christians’ level of valuing forgiveness and forgiveness of actual transgressions. Several methodological issues and offense-specific variables have been presented as explanations. This present thesis examines the role of the congregation as a group identity, and applies it to a theory of relational spirituality, as a measure of the relationship between a victim and the Sacred. The following thesis examines the way “revelatory acts of God” in each of the canonical Gospels engender reverence for Jesus. “Revelatory acts of God” are disclosures of God by vision or audition (also called, “revelatory experiences”). Thus, any event in which characters hear a voice from heaven or see a vision from heaven is a “revelatory experience.” But what role do these accounts have in the four Gospel for engendering reverence for Jesus? That is, how do God’s direct interventions within these narratives inspire characters to respond to Jesus? The answer to this question is the focus of
