Abstract:
Both the standard economic model and bargaining theory make predictions about financial management and the division of household labor between household partners. Using a large Internet survey, we have tested several predictions about task divisions reported by Dutch household partners. The division of household labor was mainly explained by partners’ job status, wife’s levels of education, and number of children, pointing to the relevancy of social class effects and life cycle stage to the division of household labor. The spouses’ wage rates were not significant in explaining the division of

Using data on Moscowcouples, this study investigates the division of household labor and its effects on marital conflict and thought of divorce. The hypotheses predict how spouses’economic resources, gender beliefs, and time constraints influence marital contention both directly and indirectly through wife’s perceived division of household labor and her satisfaction with it. Husband’s marital contention also is analyzed. Among the findings, the spouses’ relative characteristics have some influence on the division of household labor, and the relative characteristics condition the effects of hou

Abstract:
The household division of labor and pay inequality between men and women is examined using the 2006 American Time Use Survey. There are three main theoretical perspectives to examine when discussing household division of labor and pay inequality between men and women. The individual model argues that an individual makes rational choices when investing in Human Capital, which directly affects their income. Structural theory states that the position that an individual occupies determines the income and reward that one receives. Gender theory states that gender is a process of devaluation and sor

Several socio-structural theoretical approaches attempt to explain the gendered division of household labor, but the dyadic process of dividing labor has gone largely unexplored. Therefore, a grounded theory approach was taken with 20 dual-earner married couples to uncover the process of dividing household labor between spouses. The theory that emerged indicated that couples seek to maximize benefits in their distribution of labor, and do so by dividing tasks according to personal preferences and proficiencies. Previous research has established the influence of the division of household labor between spouses on marital satisfaction, as well as the mental health of each spouse. Less is known about how the division of labor changes during the course of marriage. The family development perspective suggests that division of labor will change in response to different stages and circumstances, while the homeostasis perspective suggests that the division of labor will remain stable throughout the life course. Abstract In the last couple of decades, there has been an increase in the number of female domestic workers, locally referred to as “al-khadam” employed in households in Qatar. This is partly due to the economic growth and rising household incomes because of which families are able to hire migrant females to help them in domestic tasks. In this chapter, we examine how the presence of these workers impacts household labor division and assess how they enable and challenge traditional family settings. Rather than perpetuating a one-dimensional narrative of domestic workers as mere “victims of exp

The outcomes analyzed include labor force participation rates, the distribution of employment of women across sectors of the economy (formal versus informal), and earnings. Next, the authors examine the role of schooling in explaining the increase in female labor force participation in LAC countries. All of these findings suggest a fair degree of change in the role of women within households and in
