Abstract:
The monograph is devoted to the methodology of material and technical support of railway transport. According to the types of activities, the nature of the material and technical resources used, technologies, means and management systems, Russian railways belong to the category of high-tech industries that must have high quality and technical level, reliability and technological efficiency in operation. For this reason, the logistics system itself, both in structure and in the algorithm of the functions performed as a whole, needs a serious improvement in the quality of its work. The economic situation in Russia requires a revision of the principles and mechanisms of management based on the corporate model of supply chain management, focused on logistics knowledge. In the difficult economic conditions of the current decade, it is necessary to improve the quality of the supply organization of enterprises and structural divisions of railway transport, directly related to the implementation of the process approach, the advantage of which is a more detailed regulation of management actions and their mutual coordination. In order to increase the efficiency of its activities and develop the management system, Russian Railways is developing a lean production system aimed at further expanding the implementation of the principles of customer orientation, ideology and corporate culture. At the present time, the solution of many issues is impossible without a cybernetic approach to the formulation of problems of material and technical support and logistics analysis of information technologies, to the implementation of the developed algorithms and models of development strategies and concepts for improving the business processes of the production system. The management strategy, or the general plan for the implementation of activities for the management of material resources, is based on a fundamental assessment of the alignment and correlation of forces and factors operating in the economic and political field, taking into account the impact on the specific form of the management strategy. The materials will be useful to the heads and specialists of the directorates of the MTO, CDZs and can be used in the scientific research of bachelors, masters and postgraduates interested in the economics of railway transport and supply logistics.

Abstract:
This chapter focuses on the Chicago Outfit as a complex criminal organization, with particular emphasis on its hierarchical structure, chain of command, and division of labor. After describing the formal structure of the Chicago Outfit and its criminal activities, the chapter shows that people who are connected to organized crime are, in fact, part of the organizational structure. It then considers the people with whom the Outfit is regularly in contact and suggest that they, too, are an integral part of the organization. It also looks at the positions within the criminal organization and the public that the Outfit serves. Accounts of the activities of the Outfit suggest that positions exist for bosses, members, and associates, who are said to be “connected.” The chapter argues that the Chicago Outfit has an organized public, made up of gamblers, thieves, and “wannabes” (people who want to be associated with the Outfit), that has provided a ready source of participants for organized criminal activities as well as recruits for the group itself.

Abstract:
This book argues that external actions of the European Union result in an acceleration of national politics being locked into a tightening net of EU law. It brings to light the -hidden effects of EU external actions on, for example, the interpretation of organizational principles, pre-emption, and international obligations of the Member States. It then connects these effects to the broader debate on the democratic crisis, by engaging with the basic structures of the EU legal order and the Union’s relations with its citizens. The focus of this book is on the ‘outside-in’ effects of EU external relations. More specifically, the book sheds light on how the Union’s external actions affect the power division between the EU and its Member States, the structures that shape the relationship between the Union and its citizens, as well as the autonomy, effectiveness, and legitimacy of EU law. It examines, for example, the interpretation and potential of organizational principles, such as loyalty, subsidiarity, primacy, and coherence, in the context of external relations. It analyses how the choice of an external legal basis affects Member States’ powers. It traces how the European Parliament represents EU citizens in external relations. The book then analyses these legal findings through the lens of ‘structure of bonding’, that is, basic structures that have the potential to frame and affect the Union’s relations with its citizens. It shows how bonding structures could be used to justify that the Union takes external actions, including where they constrain Member States.

This chapter discusses the borders of Hasidism, showing its halt on the Polish–German and Lithuanian–German border and factors responsible for this halt. This was unfavorable to Hasidism professional and social structure, language barrier, and, most importantly, the pressure of the autostereotype of anti-Hasidic, German–Jewish culture. The chapter also analyzes the basis of the popular image of Hasidism’s regional divisions, showing their essential dependence on nineteenth-century political divisions. It also traces patterns of interrelation between Hasidic groups’ types of spatial organization as well as their types of spirituality and leadership, demonstrating a correlation between the type of spatial organization of the group and the type of leadership and spirituality of a given group.

Abstract:
The dominant structure of knowledge in the twentieth century was division into domains of disciplinary specialization. In the latter half of the century this system was challenged by an increasing number of interdisciplinary activities. This chapter examines typologies of interdisciplinary activities, identifying patterns of consensus and fault lines of debate from the first major classification scheme in 1970 and continues to recent taxonomies that recognize new developments. The chapter compares similarities and differences in a framework of multidisciplinary juxtaposition and alignment of disciplines, interdisciplinary integration and collaboration, and transdisciplinary synthesis and trans-sector problem solving. It further distinguishes major variants of methodological versus theoretical interdisciplinarity, bridge building versus restructuring, and instrumental versus critical interdisciplinarity. Typologies are neither neutral nor static. They reflect choices of representation in a semantic web of differing purposes, contexts, organizational structures, and epistemological frameworks. They reassert, extend, interrogate, and reformulate existing classifications to address both ongoing and unmet needs.

Abstract:
This chapter elaborates on the need for knowledge-based journalism in politicized science controversies, detailing specific practices and media structures that might enable more constructive debate. In doing so, it analyzes three main models for doing knowledge-based journalism, drawing on examples of veteran journalists who serve as prototypes for new generations of professionals to emulate and for media organizations to invest in. By combining these approaches, journalists and their news organizations can contextualize and critically evaluate expert knowledge and competing claims, facilitate discussion that bridges entrenched ideological divisions, and promote consideration of a broader menu of policy options and technologies. The recent advent of several news ventures focused on deeper forms of explanatory, analytical, and data-driven journalism suggest that at least some news industry leaders and philanthropists have recognized the need for new types of knowledge-based journalism. These ventures, however, are further evidence that dramatic changes are needed in journalism education.

This chapter examines the new neoliberal phase of corporate restructuring, which is producing a new foreign workforce that will have even less power than undocumented workers today. The rise of guest worker programs is an integral component of a dramatic shift in the global division of labor, perpetuated through technological advances, which permits corporations to deskill many professional jobs and reduce the number of workers necessary to perform tasks, and relies increasingly on low-skilled labor. In this hostile environment, the working class and organized labor in the United States and throughout the world must search for a means to counter neoliberal reforms that only benefit corporations at the expense of workers everywhere. But unions must reject business as usual and new forms of labor organizations rooted in nonhierarchical structures must emerge to mobilize workers in the United States and throughout the world.

Despite this seeming constancy the Press underwent significant changes, prompted by technological, economic, educational, and political developments in Britain and elsewhere. Part I considers the Press as a whole, beginning by examining the response to the 1970 Waldock Report, the business history of the Press—its structure, leadership, and finances, and its relationship with the University of Oxford. Case studies explore in detail the removal of the London Business to Oxford, the relocation of distribution facilities to Corby, and the closure of the Printing House. Subsequent chapters trace broader developments including OUP’s approach to sales and marketing, changes in book design, the impact of technological change, and the Press’s relationship with its staff and with the built environment in Oxford and around the world. Part II looks at the Press through its publications. These seven chapters each consider a part of the OUP list: academic titles, textbooks, and monographs; trade titles, including children’s books; schoolbooks; dictionaries and reference titles; journals; music, hymnals, and bibles; and poetry. Part III assesses the global outreach of the Press, examining OUP’s English-language teaching division and detail the operations and publications of its international branches.
