Abstract:
This thesis aims to assess the supporting role social networks provide to divorced Saudi women who face after divorce challenges. After reviewing the impact that online social networks have on Saudi society and the legal context of divorce in Saudi Arabia, this study explores key issues faced by divorced Saudi women using a qualitative approach. Upon reviewing the limited amounts of literature and following two methodological phases, the key findings are: (1) identifications of primary challenges faced by divorced Saudi women namely; social, economic, psychological, and legal issues; (2) extraction of themes based on each identified issue, leading to the identification of four qualitative models; and (3) assessment of the supporting role social networks have in the identified themes of each issue.

Thomas, Cynthia M. "The lived experience for women who have experienced divorce : grief and growth : a phenomenological qualitative study." Virtual Press, 2006. http://liblink.bsu.edu/uhtbin/catkey/1344448.

Full text
Abstract:
People marry with the intention of remaining married until death. However, marriages are more likely to end in divorce than by death (Popenoe & Whitehead, 1999). This phenomenological narrative qualitative study seeks to gain an understanding of the lived experience for women who have experienced a divorce and the growth they may have gained through their grief The specific research question to be answered was; how did the women live, believe, experience, articulate, feel, and grow through the divorce experience?Ten Caucasian, middle to upper middle-class women, aged from 48-73 years volunteered to be interviewed in the study. Participants had been legally married and divorced. There were eight themes that emerged from the participant's narratives; dating reflections; married life; support/lack of support; self perceptions; family; emotions; growth; and future. The Sandwich Model of Divorce: Grief and Growth was developed from the eight themes of the study. The model was place in a sandwich formate to represent the layers of a person's life that has an impact on divorce. The major findings for this study suggested the participants did in fact have personal growth through grief and were transformed as a result of the experience. However, the participants did not recognize the growth since many areas of growth occurred in what the participants considered to be everyday life and survival. Growth occurred in different stages of their dating, marriages, divorces, and current lives. Implications for this study suggest women can emerge from divorce with personal growth, but the nature of the personal growth depends on the value women place on their roles as people. Better pre-marital counseling, understanding gender roles within the context of dating and marriage, providing mentors and changing societal stigmas may assist women to experience greater personal growth through the grief of divorce.

Proulx, Ginette M. "The decision-making process involved in divorce : a critical incident study." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 1991. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/31324.

Full text
Abstract:
The present research explores the process of coming to terms with the decision to divorce. The research was conducted with 20 women of North-American culture, divorced or separated a minimum of six months with no thought of reconciliation. The methodology employed retrospective accounts. A semi-structured interview using the critical incident technique pioneered by Flanagan (1954) was used to gather data. The subjects were asked to describe specific incidents which prompted them to reassess their marriage and eventually decide to separate or divorce. They were also asked to describe incidents which made it more difficult to come to that decision. A total of 175 incidents were collected illustrating a range of experiences which either precipitated or hindered the decision to separate or divorce. Using an inductive method of analysis, the data was organized in a classification schema consisting of three superordinate categories - feelings, cognitions, behaviours - and 33 subcategories. In addition, a summary of the marital problems highlighted in the critical incidents is provided, with examples of the marital dynamics involved. Finally, a four-stage model outlining the process of coming to terms with the decision to divorce was derived from the category system. The model focuses on the intrapsychic dynamics of the subjects in the decision-making process. The labels given to these stages are disillusionment, ambivalence, cognitive restructuring, and resolution. The findings of the present research are compared and contrasted to those of social exchange theorists (Albrecht & Kunz, 1980; Levinger, 1965), stage theorists (Duck, 1982; Kaslow, 1981; Ponzetti & Cate, 1988; Vaughan, 1979), and grief theorists (Crosby, Gage & Raymond, 1983, 1986; Wiseman, 1975). The issues raised in the present research are discussed from a gender role perspective, in light of the theories of Attanucci (1988), Eichenbaum and Orbach (1983), Gilligan (1982), Goodrich, Rampage, Ellman and Halstead (1988), Herman (1977), Lerner (1977), Miller (1976; 1983; 1984; 1986) and Rubin (1983). In conclusion, the category system and model delineated in the present research offer a comprehensive set of experiences of what facilitates and hinders the decision to divorce.

López, Nancy P. "Latin American Women's Perceptions of Divorce: An Exploratory Study of the Situation and Image of Divorced Women in Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 2004. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/41283.

Full text
Abstract:
The identity of Latin America is composed of elements inherited from Europe, Asia and Africa. This identity has been defined with a series of images, roles, behaviors and rules created to maintain a particular unification among the citizens of these societies. Cultural ideologies involving marriage, separation and divorce have been subjected to historical changes. Divorce in Latin America typically has had a negative connotation and communities have considered divorced women as outcasts. The purpose of this study is to examine Puerto Rican and Dominican women's perception of divorce with particular emphasis on divorced women's image and experience in these countries. There are similarities and differences between the two countries based on geographical, cultural, historical, economic and legal issues. Due to the cultural presence of the United States in Puerto Rico, many issues now separate the two countries. I consider this "duality" (Traditional/Latin American and Westernized/American) to be an interesting context for exploration particularly as it relates to women's perception of divorce.

Abstract:
This thesis is the result of research undertaken for the Doctoral Programme in British Policy Studies at the University of Sheffield, which consisted of one year's taught courses, and two year's research. It is an inter-disciplinary piece of work, drawing on both sociological and social policy literature and deals with women's experiences of marriage, and then lone parenthood, which forms the major part of the thesis, Most of the content is reproduced from and arises from interviews conducted with women while doing fieldwork associated with the research, The thesis illustrates how despite the negative aspects of lone parenthood, such as financial deprivation and loneliness, there are still postive aspects, and women make gains that they would not. give up easily, In addition, dependency is one of the issues covered in the thesis; during marrriage, and as a lone parent, both on the state and on the family. It is suggested that what are in fact occurring are relationships of interdependency rather than dependency, and that despite having negative connotations, being dependent on the state and/or the family, can in fact be part of the process of becoming independent, The thesis then seeks to allow women's own experiences to be heard as far as possible in their own words. From this it is learned that women and their children can gain from lone parenthood, although they could achieve more with additional support and encouragement from the state, and that the negativity surrounding the concept of dependency needs to be challenged.

Abstract:
Close relationships play an integral role in our lives. Problems associated with close relationships could have social and psychological effects on individuals. Research has documented that disruption of a relationship is considered as one of the major life stressors. In this context, the present research aims to identify differences between the intact marriages and those which ended in divorce, in Turkey, in relation to problems experienced during premarital level and marital level. Furthermore, this research has examined the perceived problem solving behaviour of the currently married and divorced individuals with respect to premarital and marital problems experienced. Retrospective survey interviewing was adopted as a data collection strategy in order to study self-reported problems and problem-solving behaviour by respondents. It has been hoped that the findings from the present study would be beneficial for relationship enhancement programs to be developed in Turkey.

Abstract:
Divorce has been and remains a prevalent occurrence in the United States and, while rates are not increasing as they once were, it still remains an extremely common phenomenon. As of the most recent U.S. Census Bureau report on divorce and remarriage, 56% of men and 59% of women ever married have been divorced. Despite these statistics, the vast majority of Americans still value marriage as an institution. This study aims to examine the role religion plays in the propensity and timing of remarriage. Using logistic and OLS regressions, and data pooled from the 1995 and 2002 National Survey of Family Growth, multifaceted effects of denominational subcultures are examined concerning the propensity and timing of remarriage among divorced women. In addition, the linkages between religious salience, religious attendance, and the propensity and timing of remarriage are explored.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to explore the effects of parental divorce and family conflict during adolescence on young adult females' social support and psychological adjustment. The three areas explored were perceptions of relationship satisfaction and closeness, sources and amount of social support and adjustment. One hundred and forty-one female undergraduates, 53% from families in which their parents are still married and 47% from families in which a parental divorce occurred during adolescence, completed the following measures: the Dyadic Adjustment Scale (Spanier, 1976), the Social Provisions Scale-Source Specific (Cutrona, 1989), the Inventory of Common Problems (Hoffman & Weiss, 1986), the Family Environment Scale (Moos & Moos, 1981), and the Sibling Relationship Questionnaire (Furman & Buhrmester, 1985).

Abstract:
Thesis (M Social Work)--University of Stellenbosch, 2007.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The aim of this study is to gain understanding of the perceptions and experiences of divorced women in the postdivorce phase, with specific reference to rural divorcees. During intervention with divorced women the social worker ought to be informed about the needs of divorcees, as well as be skilled to deal with the trauma of divorce. It is therefore necessary to understand how women experience the post-divorce process. The Systems, Ecological, Strengths and Feminist Perspectives are used as a frame of reference to understand the adaptation of divorced women. First, a study of relevant literature is undertaken which presents a broad review of the process of divorce; divorce as a mourning process, as well as the influence of divorce on the women and children. Attention is also devoted to literature on the adaptation of women in the post-divorce phase. Second a qualitative, phenomenological research subject is chosen to explore the experiences and perceptions of divorced women’s adaptation during the post divorce-phase. Factors which obstruct adaptation, as well as factors which stimulate personal growth, came to light during the empirical research. Four themes unfolded from the research. The first theme relates to tension: tension regarding finances; tension regarding health; tension arising from the overloading of roles and tension resulting from the relationship with the ex-husband, as well as how divorce is experienced int the rural areas. The second theme deals with spirituality: divorce as a spiritual crisis; deepenig spirituality; spirituality in the shaping of identity and facilitating to a large extent the mourning process. In the third theme various sources of support are discussed, while the fourth theme focuses on the positive side of divorce, namely personal growth. The before mentioned themes contain the challenges divorced women experience during the post-divorce phase. Recommendations focus on post-divorce intervention which are aimded to relief stress, strengthen spirituality, to obtain knowledge of supportsystems in the community, and also to stimulate the process of personal growth.

Tang, Qiaomei. "Divorce and the Divorced Woman in Early Medieval China (First Through Six Century)." Thesis, Harvard University, 2016. http://nrs.harvard.edu/urn-3:HUL.InstRepos:33493331.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation consists of two parts: a cultural study of divorce in early medieval China and a literary study of the divorced woman as represented in various early medieval Chinese writings, including literary and historical writings, legal, ritual and medical texts, and tomb epitaphs. A comparison between the rites, norms and regulations prescribed for women in ritual classics, and women’s lived experiences as recounted in historical writings, shows a greater discrepancy between norm and practice in the early medieval period than in later periods. Normative prescriptions were generally not followed by women of this period, and women enjoyed a more relaxed social and familial environment than their late imperial counterparts. The gap between norm and practice was extended into many areas of familial and social life, including marriage and divorce. An examination of actual divorce cases reveals that neither the Seven Conditions (qichu 七出) nor the Three Prohibitions (sanbuqu 三不去) were strictly adhered to when divorce took place. Divorce happened to people from all levels of society, and could be initiated by both men and women for reasons outside of the Seven Conditions and the Three Prohibitions. Divorce was not regarded as a social taboo in early medieval China. The unstable social and political environment that characterizes the early medieval period gave rise to some ritual deviations and anomalies, among which was the two-principal-wives (liangdi 兩嫡) phenomenon. Debates and discussions on this marital predicament anchored on the issue of divorce, that is, how should the martial status of the two wives be defined? A thorny case of a sixth-century liangdi dilemma reveals that during the long divide between north and south, the contestation between wives for the principal wife status mirrored the contention for cultural supremacy and political legitimacy between northern and southern elite. Generally speaking, divorced women were not stigmatized in early medieval China, and remarriage was an acceptable recourse for them. Historians appeared to be indifferent to her plight, and tended to write of the divorced woman only to help tell the story of the man who divorced her. In contrast, in poetic writings, the divorced woman was not viewed only in relation to her ex-husband. She was instead a disconnected, isolated figure, and her emotions took center stage. This comparison reveals that the image of the divorced woman in early medieval China reflects both the mindset of the men who formulate her in writing, as well as the constraints imposed by each writing genre.

Goode, Stephen. "Children and divorce : a study of Divorce Court supervision orders." Thesis, University of Nottingham, 1988. http://eprints.nottingham.ac.uk/13332/.

Full text
Abstract:
This research study was of the making and administration of Divorce Court Supervision Orders. Although established in England and Wales in 1958, there has been no detailed examination of supervision in domestic proceedings. In the 1979 period, when the population was obtained, 6,935 Divorce Court Supervision Orders were made. This figure has reduced to approximately 5,000 in 1985, with a total of 26,50C) ongoing orders. The population consisted of 121 children in 62 family units. Supervision could be undertaken by both probation officers or social workers. A review was undertaken of the original intentions of Divorce Court Supervision Orders as conceived by the Royal Commission on Marriage and Divorce 1951-55, and any subsequent amendments by legislation. Particular emphasis is also given to changing aspects of family law which might affect provision for children the history of social work to children in divorce proceedings was also examined. A detailed analysis was undertaken of descriptive material, on the place of children in divorce proceedings. This included research studies on the effects of divorce on children and any changes in the provision of services to parents and their children at the time of divorce proceedings. A full explanation is given of concepts such as conciliation. The original theoretical framework, placed the study of Divorce Court Supervision orders, in the wider context of the social policy of divorce proceedings. Reference is made to principles of family law and the possible relevance of a Juvenile Justice framework to the Divorce Court. In addition, Weber's concept of legitimacy was applied to the examination of Divorce Court Supervision Orders. The original research design, indicated the specific purposes of the research, which relate directly to the principles of a juvenile justice system. Details were given of the interview procedure, experience survey, identification of the validity and reliability considerations and the tests to be applied. The findings of the research are outlined in two chapters. They concentrate on the history of the families concerned, the nature of the divorce process and the details of Welfare Report recommendations. Due to the absence of any study of the process of supervision, as opposed to limited studies on the content of Divorce Court Welfare Reports, one chapter describes in some depth, the process of supervision. The analysis uses a combination of statistical tests and case examples. The use of case examples can illustrate most effectively the nature of the supervision provided. A section of the final empirical chapter addresses validity questions, by examination of what organisations a supervising officer had contact with during their involvement with a family, and the degree of continued jurisdiction of the Divorce Court over the supervision undertaken. A review of the main findings asks fundamental questions about the benevolence or control provided in domestic supervision. The final chapter places the present study, in the changing context of social work with children and their parents, involved in divorce proceedings. Child protectionism was identified as a fundamental principle, in spite of the last thirty years of reforms in family law. In addition, the final chapter questions the desirability of continued confusion over better services to divorcing parents and their children and child-protectionist based interventions by social work agencies. Parallels are drawn between the present study and other aspects of family law involving social work agencies. Throughout the research study, it was emphasised that the present research is exploratory and where appropriate, future areas of appropriate research were indicated.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT POST-DIVORCE EXPERIENCE OF HIGHLY EDUCATED AND PROFESSIONAL WOMEN Kavas, Serap Ph.D., Department of Sociology Supervisor: Assoc. Prof. Ayse Gunduz Hosgor July 2010, 327 pages Based on life-story interviews with women this dissertation analyzes post divorce experience of highly-educated and professional women. Economic, social, psychological well-being of divorced women
specifically, how they manage to adapt to their new lives after legal dissolution were examined. As is shown in our research while divorce caused various difficulties including financial, social and parenting problems, it, on ther other hand provided relief, for the participants. The participants developed wide range of survival strategies in the face of difficulties and challenges they experience which attested to their agency during and after the divorce process. To the study, while an urbanite, educated and professional woman&rsquo
s termination of a failing relationship itself can be considered as liberation on her part, it will be an overstatement to say that women are enjoying their independence and start anew, just as men do. In this connection, this study searched for insights into the question: How does act of divorce affect these women with respect to their empowerment? Feminist theory is used over the duration of this study. The study scrutinized on the emergent themes such as societal attitudes, single parenting, remarriage, intergenerational and intra-family transmission of divorce, financial consequence, and women&rsquo
s varying coping strategies as well as many other common themes emerged. Studying post-divorce experience of women, which is an unexplored area in Turkish context, employing qualitative method and dwelling on grounded theory approach as an inductive way of data analysis, this study intends to be a considerable contribution to the literature.

This thesis of approximately 98000 words is an empirically based study of the divorce process and women's experiences of the law. It begins by looking at the historical background of marriage and divorce through the different periods starting with colonization. It then looks at modern marriage and divorce. This is a sociological study of the types of relationships which people have and goes beyond the three state recognised marriages to look at other more informal unions and at the modes of dissolution thereof. It then discusses the research design and relates the study population to the general population before moving on to consider the reasons for the women's dissatisfaction in their relationships and the process of justifying or legitimating their discontent. The helpseeking careers of the women are examined paying particular attention to the agents consulted and the advice that they received from the various agencies. A theory of disputing which sees the litigation process as being less orderly and more dynamic than that advanced in traditional literature on dispute processing is advanced. The thesis then moves on to look at the women's use of the formal legal system examining barriers to access, the use of lawyers as the agents of transformation of disputes from the informal into the formal sphere and also at the provision of legal aid. The various actions instituted are considered in greater detail as are the difficulties encountered in trying to enforce the judgements obtained in court. The final data based chapter is an examination of the women's post-divorce lives from an economic and social perspective. Ultimately, it would seem that the problem may not be one of obtaining access to law, but rather of trying to obtain substantive satisfaction of the claim. Methods of enforcement and at state provision of assistance to lone parent families is considered in the light of constraints facing a developing country with limited resources.

Abstract:
[Truncated abstract] The 1974 Indonesian Marriage Law required all divorces to be ratified by courts and vested household leadership with husbands. This thesis examines the impact of this law upon the negotiation of divorce, and its implications for the constitution of state and social power. I argue that the New Order state used this law to attempt to control gender relations and reinforce political legitimacy, but that women and men resisted this project in a variety of ways. Divorce may entail the contestation of state ideological prescriptions on gender. It also reveals gender relations operating independently of the state. As such, it is a particularly fruitful site for an analysis of the location and constitution of state and social power. In order to analyse the complex relationship between marriage, divorce, and power, I have adopted several original strategies. I expand the definition of property to encompass

BOLSA NOTA 10
In the contemporary western society, the increase in life expectancy and the financially independent women, and the easer divorce process legislation are factors that contribute to increase the number of separations of married couples which stayed together for many years. Aiming to investigate the motivations, feelings, expectations and implications involved in this decision, we conducted a field study in Rio de Janeiro with ten women from middle and upper economic layers of the population, who were divorced from a long time marriage. From the discourse of participants emerged nine categories of analysis: the expectation of the marriage; reasons for separation; challenges in late life separation; alternatives for coping with difficulties; reaction from children, friends and family; professional life, before and after separation; affective and sexual life after separation; evaluation of the present moment and advice about marriage. The results show that, in spite of marital mobilizing feelings of sadness, disappointment and loneliness, the participants highlighted that it offers a good second chance in one s life. However, the results indicate that when they are approaching the sixties, the process becomes more challenging. This is due to physical and psychological changes, inherent in this phase, especially because contemporary society worships youth, beauty and fitness.

Uddin, Islam. "Muslim family law : British-Bangladeshi Muslim women and divorce in the UK." Thesis, Middlesex University, 2018. http://eprints.mdx.ac.uk/25636/.

Full text
Abstract:
This socio-legal study investigates the phenomenon of Islamic divorce in the UK. The background to the research problem is situated in discussions on Muslim women's rights in topics such as Shariah law, multiculturalism and legal pluralism. These may echo concerns that classical interpretation of Muslim family law (MFL) follows patriarchal practices that discriminate against Muslim women, whilst civil law is committed to gender equality as promoting social progress. The debate regarding the diasporic Muslim communities in Britain focuses on concepts such as multiculturalism and legal pluralism. Critics of MFL argue against policies that accommodate group rights and contend cultures socialise members to their designated status, with oppressive practices hidden in the private and domestic spheres, and specifically in the use of Shariah councils. Proponents, by contrast, argue for religious freedom, among other grounds. Many agree that further empirical research is required on the subject. This study addresses this empirical gap. The central research question asks, 'how do British-Bangladeshi Muslim Women (BBMW) pursue divorce in the UK?' and investigates the choices women made, as well as the role of experts, religion and culture in influencing decisions. It uses a phenomenological-inspired methodology, with data collection involving 27 in-depth interviews with BBMW, 12 interviews with experts, participant observation of Shariah Council hearings, and document analysis. Thematic analysis of data produced findings with conclusions applicable to the British-Bangladeshi Muslim community and to a wider field including legal practitioners and mediators, academics, policy-makers and others. The insights gained reveal the strong influence of religion and culture in establishing norms, dictating the importance of nikah, and in establishing the marriage, whilst the taboo of divorce hindered women from divorcing and affected them moving on, post-divorce. The community avoided professional mediation and viewed family disputes as a private matter. The diversity of Islamic opinions caused further confusion suggesting a need for a specific information reference point for British Muslims. The women displayed a multifaceted approach in dealing with civil and Islamic divorce, and utilised the different systems to their benefit, forming new mechanisms of securing religious divorce without the use of Shariah councils.

Schlegel, Alice B. "Yoga as Healing when Coping with Divorce." Thesis, Prescott College, 2016. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=10002847.

Abstract:

This research asks the question, How does yoga help women heal when coping with divorce? To answer this question, the researcher asked four women to tell their stories through interviews. Those interviews were then synthesized into narratives. The research was completed using the heuristic inquiry method as well as story-telling and photo elicitation. The heuristics method recognizes that the primary researcher has intimate knowledge of the subject. Therefore, the researcher became the fifth participant. Through cross-referencing the five stories, two primary and two secondary themes were uncovered. The primary themes were a connection to nature and the support of a community. The researcher presents the data as stories punctuated with photos self-selected by each participant. The themes are then further explored and corroborated using scholarly literature. This research will assist yoga teachers in supporting their students who are healing during or after divorce. It may also inform teaching practices and curriculum inside yoga classrooms.

Abstract:
Divorce among older women is a growing social phenomenon about which little is known. The qualitative case study method was employed to determine issues relevant to women experiencing late-life divorce in order to: provide a basis of knowledge about these women; to identify areas for further research; and, to yield information that would facilitate the development of mental health programs intended to serve this population. Using open-ended questions during tape recorded interviews, the perceptions of five women who divorced over the age of sixty were elicited. The areas of concern within the broad categories of physical and mental health, family and social relationships, and economic and legal issues were identified and then compared and contrasted to data gathered by previous researchers. Recommendations were made for future research and a model for a cooperative community mental health program was endorsed.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis reviews the housing-related implications of separation and divorce for women. It arges that the housing circumstances must be placed within a broader perspective of the social and economic consequences and ideological environment surrounding divorce. In the same way, operation of the housing system must be placed within a wider context, particularly in relation to the degree of change in its operational environment within the last 20 years. The thesis finds that the circumstances surrounding leaving a marriage are personally traumatic, and lead to a period of economic, housing and personal crisis. Over time, although the tendency is for establishment of re-equlibrium, considerable disadvantages prevail for women. The quickest method of establishing re-equilibrium for women is to repartner.

Burton, Abigail May. "The Experience of LDS Women Receiving Community Support and Caring for Themselves in the Stages of Divorce." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/77610.

Full text
Abstract:
This qualitative, phenomenological study examined community support and caring for oneself as Latter-day Saint (LDS) women navigated the stages of divorce. Six divorced LDS women participated in semi-structured interviews. Data was analyzed through Creswell's modified version of Moustakas' phenomenology and themes were established through meaning units. The following themes emerged: perceptions of failure, where do I belong, support and a lack of support from the overall community. Participants offered additional forms of support needed in this process, and how others can take care of themselves during this time. Participants reported feeling varying levels of support. Implications for divorced LDS women, the LDS church, and clinicians were addressed.
