This work characterises person deixis in Catalan beyond the grammatical categories of first and second person, relating it to the participation frameworks set up by Goffman (1981) and Levinson (1988).
Chapter 1 establishes the general and specific aims and the hypothesis, and outlines the pragmatic framework and the methodology used.
Chapter 2 offers a historical overview of deixis studies, from Apollonius Dyscolus's "Syntax" to the first contemporary approaches (Jespersen, Bühler, Jakobson, Lyons), semiotics (Peirce, Burks), and pragmatics (Fillmore, Levinson, Rauh, Vanelli and Renzi, Kerbrat-Orecchioni).
In chapter 3, deixis is characterised. Where there is no agreement in the literature, the author's position is argued (the inclusion of manner deixis as a deictic category, together with person, time and place deixis; the rejection of social deixis as a category; the distinction between deictic categories and uses discourse deixis is included here). The main linguistic expressions that encode deixis in Catalan are classified, and the borders with other phenomena (the expression of subjectivity, information-status and anaphoric reference) are drawn.
In chapter 4, participation frameworks are described and exemplified.
Chapter 5 characterises grammaticalised, or unmarked, forms in Catalan for participant reference. We establish that the first person encodes reference to the 'principal' (in Goffman's terms), not to any kind of speaker, and the second person to 'addressed recipient(s)', not to any kind of addressee. We also show that the distinction between inclusive and exclusive uses of first- and second-person plural forms is fuzzy when there are more than two participants. As regards vocatives, two kinds of Levinson (1983)'s calls, or summonses, are distinguished - at the speech-event level and at the utterance-event level.
Chapter 6 characterises the alternative, or marked, forms for participant reference: mainly, eight uses of the first-person plural, the use of the second-person singular for speaker reference, forms such as "menda", "servidor -a", and "un -a", "vós" and "vostè(s)" polite strategies, and various kinds of lexical noun phrases (most of which are metapragmatic or express footing).
Chapter 7 suggests some ways of analysing the data: the interpretation processes followed in referent identification; the iconicity of alternative forms; and the relationship between person deixis and Brown and Levinson (1987)'s approach to politeness.

Full textThe aim of this thesis is to analyze the relationship between certain verbal and nonverbal deictic resources in the production of oral text by multilingual speakers, specifically of instructive texts. Deixis is usually conceived from the linguistic point of view as a phenomenon that allows the connection between structural language features and specific contextual domains, particularly in personal, temporal, and spatial axes. Non-verbal mechanisms also act as deictic resources in many registers and situations in oral language. However, studies of the combination of these different kinds of mechanisms are needed to improve our knowledge of the synchronization of these multimodal signals. The data used in this research come from a multilingual, multimodal corpus (CAP, Corpus Audiovisual Plurilingüe, University of Barcelona). This corpus contains 360 oral texts by twelve informants (all of them Catalan-Spanish bilinguals with an intermediate level of proficiency in English) who were interviewed in three individual sessions, in a different language each session (Catalan, Spanish and English). These are the main objectives of the thesis: 1) To analyze which are the elements that act as space deictic markers in our corpus, in Catalan, Spanish and English. 2) To look at the relationship between these deictic elements and their context, namely, the non-verbal features in communication, in order to reveal if there are any patterns. 3) Through the division of the gestures in different parts, to study the relantionship between verbal and non-verbal deictic elements in terms of time coordination. 4) To stablish the similarities and differences within the three groups of speakers (Catalan speakers, Spanish speakers and no predominant language speakers) and the three languages they use. Regarding the methodology, each text was recorded by two digital cameras and saved; afterwards, they were analyzed using ELAN (EUDICO Language Annotator), a professional tool for the creation of complex annotations on video and audio resources. With this tool the verbal and non-verbal deictics were annotated and any relevant information was noted down in order to describe and analyze the non-verbal patterns. Gestures were also divided in different phases (Kendon 2004) so that the time relationship between gesture and verbal deictics could be studied.

Full textMedical X-ray imaging is an important tool in diagnostic radiology. The ionising-radiation dose to the patient is justified by the clinical benefit of the examination. Nonetheless, detectors that operate at even lower doses and provide more information to the radiologist are desired. A hybrid pixel detector has the potential to provide a leap in detector technology as it incorporates a more advanced signal-processing capability than currently used detectors.
The DIXI digital detector is a hybrid pixel detector developed for X-ray imaging. It consists of a readout chip and a semiconductor sensor. The division in two parts makes it possible to optimise each part individually. The detector is divided into square pixels with a size of 270 x 270 μm2. DIXI has the ability to count single photons and every readout pixel has two embedded counters to allow the acquisition of two images close in time. A discriminator enables the selection of photons with energies above a preset threshold level.
The readout chip Angie has been developed and its performance has been evaluated in terms of noise, threshold variation and capability to perform energy weighted counting. Silicon sensors have been fabricated, and a control system for DIXI has been designed and built. An electroless process for deposition of Ni/Au bumps on the chip and sensor has been optimised as a preparation for the assembly of a complete detector, which is being assembled by flip-chip bonding using anisotropic conductive film.
A simulation library for the DIXI detector has been set up and results on the image quality are reported for different exposures and working conditions. A theoretical model for hybrid pixel detectors based on the cascaded linear system theory has been developed. The model can be used to investigate and optimise the detector for different detector configurations and operating conditions.

Full textThe present investigation focuses on structural and multimodal-interactional variation in use of the German dynamic verbs “gehen” and “kommen”. In this regard, production context plays an important role, since it interacts with the speaker’s cognitive processes. Thus, the choice of a concrete communicative variant leads in each case to a subjective perspective. The main goal of this study is to look for interrelations between respectively diathetical (structural) and deictic (multimodal-interactional) variation and the production context, represented in this study by thematic development and the stilistic-individual factor. The study data were extracted from an oral language corpus of audiovisual records. It consists of 35 productions and 7 speakers (5 productions per speaker). Each of these 5 productions corresponds to a thematic development (objective and subjective narrations, procedural and object oriented descriptions and argumentations). All records were transcribed and lemmatised to ensure sufficient representativeness of each dynamic predicate in all thematic developments (157 realizations for “gehen” and 121 realizations for “kommen”). In order to pursue the research goal, a methodological strategy based on a two-level analysis was developed. On the one hand, the structural analysis involves recognizing and classifying units of analysis, such as sentence structure (“Satzbauplan”) of each predicate, semantic role of each complement subcategorized by the verb (“Ergänzung”), and predicate class (actions, activities, processes, and states), which leads to exploration of the syntactic-semantic predicate relations. This allows distinction between prototypical use of “gehen” and “kommen” (dynamic actions/activities with explicit agent as grammatical subject) and their non prototypical diathetical variants (dynamic actions with non agentive subject, and blocked yet implicit agent). On the other hand, the multimodalinteractional analysis focuses on the referential capacity of the same gehen and kommen predicates. It involves the verbal and/or gestural identification of the origin or reference point (‘me-here’) in such a predicate with the speaker or hearer as entities of the production context of each used predicate. This eventual identification forms the basis for the distinction between deictic or not deictic dynamic predicates. The combination of studied diathetical and deictic variation with the aspect of thematic development and the stilictic-individual factor shows that the textual context aspect tends to perspective consistancy. This consistancy regarding structural and multimodal-interactional variation is observed in all thematic developments, which neutralizes the distinction between objective and subjective narrations on the one hand, and procedural and object oriented descriptions on the other hand. The textual aspect also favours a very restrictive distribution of the observed units of analysis. Thus, diathetical predicates are only observed in descriptions. In contrast to this, the stilictic individual factor, which is tightly bound to the cognitive processes of the same speaker, is not so restrictive and favours therefore the occurrence of variation in more cases. This finding allows to conclude that not all production context aspects contribute to variation occurrence to the same extent.

Full textWe plan this thesis to observe if determinate use of the marks of utterance manipulation is well considered by the professionals of the advertising copywriting in internet. We centre especially in the deixis as a factor approaching the advertising texts to dialogue. In this sense, we also study the selection of the acts of speech. We extract the field of study among the actions of communication that concurred to the FIAP of 2009. In this way we can compare the use of the deixis in three groups of reference: the actions rewarded the selected in the short list and the ones not selected. Once transcribed all the banners, classical and enriched, we divide them in utterances, syntagmas and/or words to analyse and quantify the deixis present in all them. We also observe and process the acts of speech found. The crossing of the data obtained allows us to conclude that the greater (and better) use of the deixis is a well valued factor because the announcements rewarded result to be the ones with a bigger deixis density. Likewise we catalog a new class of deixis, the interface one that turns into characteristic of the advertising copywriting in internet. In all, we establish a group of 9 councils for a better deixis use in the advertising copywriting. We also trace the model of the emissary and and the model of the internet user. Both are defined by the selections of acts of speech we found. The study reveals that the verbal content of the banners are texts in action between interlocutors.
