Abstract:
Context: With the advent of Machine Learning (ML) and especially Deep Learning (DL) technology, companies are increasingly using Artificial Intelligence (AI) in systems, along with electronics and software. Nevertheless, the end-to-end process of developing, deploying and evolving ML and DL models in companies brings some challenges related to the design and scaling of these models. For example, access to and availability of data is often challenging, and activities such as collecting, cleaning, preprocessing, and storing data, as well as training, deploying and monitoring the model(s) are complex. Regardless of the level of expertise and/or access to data scientists, companies in all embedded systems domain struggle to build high-performing models due to a lack of established and systematic design methods and processes. Objective: The overall objective is to establish systematic and structured design methods and processes for the end-to-end process of developing, deploying and successfully evolving ML/DL models. Method: To achieve the objective, we conducted our research in close collaboration with companies in the embedded systems domain using different empirical research methods such as case study, action research and literature review. Results and Conclusions: This research provides six main results: First, it identifies the activities that companies undertake in parallel to develop, deploy and evolve ML/DL models, and the challenges associated with them. Second, it presents a conceptual framework for the continuous delivery of ML/DL models to accelerate AI-driven business in companies. Third, it presents a framework based on current literature to accelerate the end-to-end deployment process and advance knowledge on how to integrate, deploy and operationalize ML/DL models. Fourth, it develops a generic framework with five architectural alternatives for deploying ML/DL models at the edge. These architectural alternatives range from a centralized architecture that prioritizes (re)training in the cloud to a decentralized architecture that prioritizes (re)training at the edge. Fifth, it identifies key factors to help companies decide which architecture to choose for deploying ML/DL models. Finally, it explores how MLOps, as a practice that brings together data scientist teams and operations, ensures the continuous delivery and evolution of models.

Abstract:
Information systems used in archaeological research have several needs that can be summarized as follows: interoperability among diverse, heterogeneous systems, making information available without significant delay, providing a sustainable approach to long-term preservation of data, and providing a suite of services to users of the system. In this thesis, we describe how digital library techniques can be employed to provide solutions to these problems and describe our experiences in creating a prototype for ETANA-DL. ETANA-DL is a model-based, componentized, extensible, archaeological Digital Library that manages complex information sources using the client-server paradigm of the Open Archives Initiative Protocol for Metadata Harvesting (OAI-PMH). We have designed and developed the prototype system with the following main goals: 1) to achieve information sharing between different heterogeneous archaeological systems, 2) to make primary archaeological data rapidly available to users, 3) to provide useful services to users of the DL, 4) to elicit requirements that users of the system will have beyond the services that it supports, and 5) to provide a sustainable solution to long-term preservation of valuable archaeological data. Consequently, we describe our approach to handling heterogeneous archaeological information from disparate sources; suggest an architecture for ETANA-DL, to be validated through prototyping; and show that given a pool of components that implement common DL services, a prototype DL can be rapidly created that supports several useful services over integrated data. Further, and most fundamentally, we note that understanding complex information systems is a difficult task. Finally, therefore, we describe our efforts to model complex archaeological information systems using the 5S framework, and show how we have used the resulting partial models to implement ETANA-DL with cross-collection searching and browsing capabilities.

Abstract:
Human leukocyte antigen (HLA)-mismatched haematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) represents an important therapeutic option for patients lacking suitable donors. Delayed posttransplant immune recovery constitutes one of its major complications and is most pronounced in the T cellular compartment. A novel strategy to promote de novo thymopoiesis from donor derived HSCs and to accelerate T cellular reconstitution in patients after HSCT consists in the adoptive transfer of in vitro generated T cell progenitor cells. Identification of Notch1 as the key regulator of early T-lineage development has allowed the generation of Notch ligand-based culture systems, which provide a powerful tool to generate T-lymphoid progenitors in vitro. The efficacy of murine T-lymphoid progenitors to promote T cell reconstitution has been well demonstrated in conventional mouse models. In consistency, in vitro-generated human T cell progenitors were demonstrated to promote thymic recovery in humanized mice. Yet, positive effects of in vitro generated human T cell precursors on peripheral T cell reconstitution have not been demonstrated. Moreover currently used Notch-based co-culture systems consist of genetically modified murine cell lines. With view to establishing a clinically applicable system, feeder-cell-free Notch-ligand culture systems for the generation of T-lymphopoietic progenitors are warranted. During my PhD project I developed a new culture system based on the immobilized Notch ligand Delta-like-4 (DL-4). Exposure of human CD34+ cord blood cells to immobilized DL-4 enabled the in vitro generation of high number of T cell progenitors, which harboured the phenotype of immature early thymic progenitor cells (ETP) and prothymocytes (proT). ETP and proT cell generated during DL-4 culture upregulated essential genes involved in early T-lymphoid development (i.e. IL7Rα, PTα, RAG1 and BCL11b) and had undergone stage-specific recombination of the T cell receptor (TCR) locus in a similar way as in native human thymopoiesis. In limiting dilution analysis after secondary OP9/DL-1 co-culture, DL-4 progenitors displayed a highly increased T-lymphoid potential, which could be entirely attributed to the ETP and proT subset. When transferred into NOD/SCID/γc-/- mice, DL-4 primed T cell progenitors migrated to the thymus and accelerated intrathymic T cell differentiation and emergence of functional, mature and polyclonal αβ T cells in the periphery. In a co-transplantation approach, which more closely mimics a clinical setting, DL-4 progenitors and untreated CD34+ cells from HLA-disparate donors were simultaneously injected in the same recipient. This procedure allowed even more rapid and more robust T cell reconstitution. HLA-tracking of the distinct graft sources further showed, that DL-4 progenitors specifically reconstituted the T-lymphoid compartments. This work provides further evidence for the ability of in vitro-generated human T cell progenitors to promote de novo thymopoiesis and shows for the first time, that these cells accelerate peripheral T cell reconstitution in humanized mice. The availability of the efficient feeder-cell-free DL-4 culture technique represents an important step towards the future clinical exploitation translation of in vitro generated T-lymphoid progenitor cells to improve posttransplant immune reconstitution

It is possible to observe that the current scenario of distance education in Brazilian Higher Education Institutions has shown an increase in demand for Distance Learning Courses. The Ministry of Education said this increase was about fifteen per cent of enrollments made in higher level courses (MEC 2013). This clearly points to an expansion of school systems in offering distance mode courses. To be able to meet and adapt to this new level of complexity it is necessary to adapt the systems to have academics and virtual learning environments that allow teachers and students to benefit from the new facilities offered by these environments. It appears, however, that academic management systems and learning management environments available do not meet the actual needs of the administrative and pedagogical coordinators and teachers of DL courses. In addition, new roles have been created such as the role of the Tutor. The central focus of this study is to investigate the real difficulties encountered by teachers and coordinators of distance courses in the management of the activities of tutors; to establish the functionalities of the system designed to query the data from the activities of tutors in this environment of teaching and learning; and to provide elements to assist and streamline the practice of coordinators and teachers in managing the activities of the tutors in the virtual rooms. In order to make this possible, functional requirements were settled, a review of Moodle s functionalities was performed and a web application was implemented. The final result is an application called DL-TUTOR.

In Portugal, the public old age pension system funding is based on the pay as you go method where workers' contributions pay the pensions of current pensioners. Throughout the years, many changes have been done in the Social Security system legislation, namely regarding retirement pensions. The most recent reform caused an increase in the normal retirement age and added some factors to the calculation of the retirement benefit. In this report we analyze the impact of those reforms on the old age pension benefit under the Social Security system and on the present value of private pension funds responsibilities. Therefore, we consider the main features of both the public old age pension system and the complementary private pension plans, offered by banks to their employees.

Abstract:
The amount of data available and consumed by people globally is growing. To reduce mental fatigue and increase the general ability to gain insight into complex texts or documents, we have developed an application to aid in this task. The application allows users to upload documents and ask domain-specific questions about them using our web application. A summarized version of each document is presented to the user, which could further facilitate their understanding of the document and guide them towards what types of questions could be relevant to ask. Our application allows users flexibility with the types of documents that can be processed, it is publicly available, stores no user data, and uses state-of-the-art models for its summaries and answers. The result is an application that yields near human-level intuition for answering questions in certain isolated cases, such as Wikipedia and news articles, as well as some scientific texts. The application shows a decrease in reliability and its prediction as to the complexity of the subject, the number of words in the document, and grammatical inconsistency in the questions increases. These are all aspects that can be improved further if used in production.

This study proposes an inference mechanism which is based on SWRL and OWL DL to address ambiguity in course scheduling. Nowadays, the inference mechanism is adopted by intelligent agent especially in automation, integration, negotiation, and etc. Among them, the essential works of inference are formalizing and representing knowledge. The semantic Web is emerging technology as a mean to provide comprehensive capability between machines. It is based on XML, RDF (Resource Description Framework), RDF Schema, OWL (Ontology Web Language), and etc. to construct knowledge taxonomy, relationship, and reasoning mechanism. There are two tracks in this study, using OWL to describe relations among knowledge and using SWRL (Semantic Web Rule Language) to define the actions in conflicts. The OWL DL is one of OWL versions, which performs the concepts of description language to present relationships in a logical form. SWRL is a synergy of combining OWL and RuleML, which enable semantics in define rules. In implementation stage, we utilize RACER to connect domain ontology and an inference engine for generate instances into a repository. Finally, we applied this design in a course scheduling problem. Empirical results suggest that our approach can describe more complex relationship, knowledge sharing, and enhanced semantic capability in rules. It enables flexible inference mechanism to deal with ambiguities in conflict circumstances.

In the Long Term Evolution (LTE) system, there are two different duplexing modes: Frequency Division Duplexing(FDD) and Time Division Duplexing(TDD). TDD use time to separate the transmitting channel and receiving channel. In the mobile system with TDD mode, the frequency carrier of receiving and transmitting signal is same and allocates the resources by time. The eNB sends signal to UE in particular time, the UE sends signal to eNB in the other time. Therefore, the UE and eNB have to be synchronous to perform smoothly. In 3GPP specification,3GPP group defined seven different DL/UL configuration schemes in TDD frame. But do not explain how we can efficiently using those configurations. In LTE system, we need considered inter-cell interference. Crossed timeslot interference is a special inter-cell interference in LTE TDD system. When two neighbor cells use different DL/UL configuration schemes, crossed timeslot interference may occur. In order to solve the above problems, we propose a flexible adjustment of DL/UL configuration schemes. Considering Relay deploying environment, using this schemes to improve the system throughput and comparing impact of the CTI with system throughput at the same time.

3GPP, 3rd Generation Partnership Project, is an internationally recognized communication standards development organization. Since Rel-15, Release 15, has completed the technical research and standard specification for 5th Generation Mobile Communication New Radio, 5G-NR. In the past, Static Time Division Duplex (Static TDD) in 4G-LTE system cannot accommodate rapidly changing traffic demands. Instead, flexible duplexing technique in 5G-NR can adapt to rapid change of Downlink (DL) and Uplink (UL) traffic pattern. However, when nearby TRPs (Transmission Reception Point, TRP) operate in different transmission directions at the same time, cross-link interference (CLI) happens, resulting in deterioration of link quality between TRPs and UEs (user equipment). Several well-known methods can deal with interference across links, such as power control, hybrid TDD, beam coordination, scheduling coordination, and so on. This thesis studies the hybrid TDD technique and proposes a mechanism which can appropriately switch TRPs’ operations between hybrid and static time division duplexing to trade off the degree of cross-link interference from DL TRPs to UL TRPs with the capability of adapting to DL/UL traffic variation. In addition, the mechanism regulates the number of DL TRP in hybrid TDD mode to further mitigate CLI. The proposed mechanism works on a Central Control Unit (CCU). At the start of a frame, each TRP should book its expectation on transmission direction of the next frame with the CCU by judging its own UL and DL buffers. The CCU determines whether to operate in hybrid TDD or static TDD by the ratio of UL and DL direction expectation. The CCU can reduce TRP-TRP CLI by limiting the number of DL TRPs in hybrid TDD mode or even operating in static TDD mode. Finally, the proposed method is evaluated in Urban Macro scenario with a System Level Simulator (SLS). The method can not only accommodate rapidly changing traffic demands, but also takes the interference control into consideration. Thus the proposed method mitigates TRP-TRP CLI, decreases packet delay of uplink transmission, improves the uplink packet throughput, and brings energy saving benefits to uplink transmission of user equipment.

Due to the popularity of mobile Internet, wireless communications bandwidth causing an increasing load, so the need of mobile worldwide interoperability for microwave access interface standard (Mobile WiMAX) becomes promising. Hence orthogonal frequency division multiplexing technology (OFDM) is developed to increase the efficient usage of bandwidth and high-speed data transmission and this technology is widely used in many wireless communication systems. However, OFDM systems own a major drawback is that will produce high peak to average power ratio (PAPR). Precoding is a decorrelation techniques of data symbol has been proved to be a effective PAPR reduction approach with lower computational complexity in comparison with other researches. Meanwhile pilot subcarriers of OFDM system; used for channel estimation, would reduce the effect of decorrelation of OFDM symbols by DFT matrix or Precoding Matrix and would rise PAPR. This thesis is dedicated to study to reduce the PAPR in the downlink of Mobile WiMAX by using FUSC (Fully Usage of SubChannels) with pilot subcarriers in the preprocessing approach both in DFT matrix and Precoding matrix. Simulation results show that the reduction of PAPR in FUSC is better than that of PUSC (Partially Usage of SubChannels) in the case of the downlink both with preprocess of the DFT matrix and the Precoding Matrix, and the major reason is due to that the total number of pilot carriers used in FUSC is less than that of PUSC.
