Abstract:
Objective. To compare the incidence of venous thromboembolism (VTE) after total hip arthroplasty (THA) using the direct anterior approach (DAA) with that using the direct lateral approach (DLA). In addition, patient background characteristics and the incidence of VTE were compared between the first half and the latter half of the period after introducing DAA and against DLA. Method. This was a retrospective, multicenter study involving 109 patients (116 hips) who had undergone primary unilateral THA. Thirty-six hips underwent THA using DAA and 80 hips underwent THA using DLA. Patient information including sex, age, and preoperative diagnosis was collected. The incidence of VTE was compared between DAA and DLA. Moreover, the patients who underwent THA using DAA were divided into 2 groups (first half and latter half groups), and sex, age, body mass index (BMI), and surgical time were compared between the 2 groups. Moreover, the incidence of VTE was compared among the 3 groups (first half of DAA, latter half of DAA, and DLA). Results. The incidence of VTE in the DAA group was significantly higher than that in the DLA group p=0.014. The incidence of VTE in the first half group was significantly higher than in the latter half group and the DLA group (p=0.035 and p=0.001, respectively), and there was no difference in the incidence of VTE between the latter half group and the DLA group p=0.923. Surgical time was significantly longer in the first half group than in the latter half group p=0.046. Conclusions. In the first half of the period after introducing the DAA, more VTEs occurred than in the DLA. It may be important to shorten the surgical time in the early stage of introducing the DAA, and aggressive anticoagulation therapy may be required until the surgeon becomes familiar with the procedure.

Abstract:
When thinking about nature, it is impossible to overlook fauna, which contributes to its constant transformation, mainly through the development of new species. The author of the article sheds light on the current situation of animals living e.g. in national parks, focusing on pro-environmental activities on social media and non-virtual media, and on destructive human behaviour. The growing tourism- and economy-related infrastructurisation of the mountains as well as their increasingly frequent exploration by humans force animals to change their familiar habitats. Owing to the animals’ natural territorialism as well as instinctive fight for species survival, in the case of stronger specimens we often see altruistic actions to protect the group under threat. The interference of humans with the natural environment forces animals to acquire social behaviours which are a consequence of a long adaptation process. The author of the article also examines selected aspects of ethology, that is study of inherited and acquired animal behaviour. However, the appropriation of the mountains by humans and their adaptation to human needs are characterised by a relatively high awareness of the impact on animal life, a fact reflected in numerous ecological and faunistic campaigns seeking to protect natural habitats and their indigenous residents. The article also features an analysis of campaigns and projects that are to make people sensitive to the fact that they are guests at a home of species other than the human species.

Abstract:
The article is consecrated to Constantine’s conversion and to its consequences for the Church, for the Roman Empire and for Europe. There is a general opinion that, even if his attachment to Christianity was not very mature, he worked for the Christian religion during all his life. He has taken many decisions on behalf of the Church; he protected her against the Donatists in Africa. His position towards the Arian heresy was not very clear. He did not pay attention to the dogmatic formulas, but especially to those solutions which guaranteed peace among people. Surely, the emperor once introduced into the Church, remained there as her protector and head. The society was accustomed the emperor’s position as pontifex maximus. Bishops did not protested against his involving into ecclesiastic matters because he worked on their behalf. The effect of Constantine’s attitude was: the Christianization of the Roman Empire and the connection of the Church to the State. In later centuries such an alliance of the altar with the throne was boring for the Church. It is said that every privilege has to be paid. The Roman Empire was collapsed in the end of the fifth century, but its heritage remained in Europe. Charlemagne, cooperating with Pope Leon III, tried to restore the Roman Empire as a Christian State, but he failed to do it. Surely, by his support for schools and studies, he contributed to the European culture. The idea of the Sacrum Imperium Romanum appeared again in the times of Otto I, and especially of Otto III. Such an idea was not possible to be put into practice. The Roman Empire has never been restored, but many of its elements were assimilated by the Church and by medieval Europe. There are to be noticed in all European countries in our time.

Abstract:
2530 Background: PI3K/mTOR and MAPK signaling pathways are often deregulated in tumors. Simultaneous inhibition of these pathways with the MEK1/2 inhibitor, pimasertib, plus the dual PI3K/mTOR inhibitor, SAR245409, (ClinicalTrials.gov NCT01390818) was investigated. Methods: This was a phase Ib, modified 3+3, dose-escalation trial in patients (pts) with advanced solid tumors. Pts received pimasertib and SAR245409 at the following dose levels (DLs): DL1, 15/30; DL2a, 30/30; DL2b, 15/50; DL3, 30/50; DL4a, 60/50; DL4b, 30/70; DL5, 60/70; DL6a, 90/70; DL6b 60/90 and DL7, 90/90 mg (once-daily, qd). After the qd maximum tolerated dose (MTD) was established, twice-daily (bid) dosing was tested: DL1a, 60/30; DL1b, 45/50 and DL2 60/50 mg bid. A recommended phase II dose (RP2D) was determined. Enrollment continued at the RP2D in four expansion cohorts (18 pts each): dual KRAS/PIK3CA mutated (mt) colorectal cancer (CRC), triple-negative breast cancer, KRAS mt non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) and BRAFmt melanoma. Results: 53 pts were treated qd and 7 pts bid. The most common tumors were CRC (n=16), NSCLC (n=8), ovarian and pancreatic (n=7, each). At DL6b 2/3 pts had dose-limiting toxicities (DLTs; both grade [Gr] 3 nausea/vomiting). DL6a was confirmed as the MTD for the qd schedule. At bid DL1a 2/4 pts (both Gr 3 skin rash) and at DL1b 2/3 pts (Gr 3 skin rash and Gr 3 asthenia) had DLTs. DL5 was the RP2D based on tolerability after prolonged exposure. The most common adverse events in qd schedule were: rash (62%, 13% Gr 3), diarrhea (56%, 4% Gr 3), fatigue (51%, 2% Gr 3), nausea (49%, 2% Gr 3), vomiting (45%, 2% Gr 3), peripheral edema and pyrexia (34%, each) and visual impairment with underlying serous retinal detachment (21%). Preliminary pharmacokinetic results suggest no drug-drug interaction. There were 4 partial responses: KRAS mt CRC (n=1) and low-grade ovarian cancer (n=3, 1 KRAS mt/PIK3CA mt and 2 wild-type). Enrollment in expansion cohorts at DL5 is ongoing. Conclusions: Continuousqd dosing of pimasertib and SAR245409 is tolerated and has shown signs of activity. Phase II trials are being planned. Clinical trial information: NCT01390818.

Abstract:
It has been almost 100 years since Summerhill School was founded by a charismatic Scottish teacher, A.S. Neill. Today it serves as an inspiration for a great number of schools and organizations all over the world, being considered the oldest democratic and archetypal school. Its weekly self-government meetings involve the entire school community (around 100 people) and everyone participates on equal terms. Students are free to join all classes according to the timetable and can decide on their own which ones they want to attend (if any). It is a boarding school with a number of international students. Not only does this place prepare children for lifetime challenges, but it also creates room for simple joys and cherishing the moment. Despite a great many controversial opinions, it has definitely become the symbol of debates on the nature of education. Summerhill embodies both Neill’s ideals and his concept. It is the latter that is the main subject of this dissertation. And its purpose is to present the origins of Neill’s views on upbringing, teaching and school functioning and to undertake a prolific reconstruction of the key aspects of his pedagogical thoughts, as well as providing a reflection upon their perception and current meaning. In this dissertation, Neill’s arguments are complemented by the past and present perspective of philosophical and pedagogical thinking. What deserves particular attention is the subjects which have not been thoroughly discussed in the Polish pedagogical literature. They include Neill’s intellectual biography, the philosophical origins of Neill’s pedagogical thoughts, the pluralistic approach to school organization and the influence of people associated with the League for New Education, as well as psychoanalysis enthusiasts (for example Wilhelm Reich and Sigmund Freud, who both played a part in shaping Neill’s concept).

Abstract:
Zewnętrzny punkt widzenia bowiem często odkrywa nowe płaszczyzny badań i interpretacji.

de, Sousa Hilário. "The Menggwa Dla language of New Guinea." University of Sydney, 2007. http://hdl.handle.net/2123/1341.

Full text
Abstract:
Doctor of Philosophy(PhD)
Menggwa Dla is a Papuan language spoken in Sandaun Province of Papua New Guinea and Kabupaten Jayapura of Papua Province, Indonesia. Menggwa Dla is a dialect of the Dla language; together with its sister language Anggor (e.g. Litteral 1980), the two languages form the Senagi language family, one of the small Papuan language families found in North-Central New Guinea. The main text of this thesis is divided into seven chapters. Chapter 1 introduces the linguistic, cultural and political landscapes of the Indonesia-Papua New Guinea border area where the Dla territory is located. Chapter 2 introduces the phonology of Menggwa Dla; described in this chapter are the phonemes, allophonic variations, phonotactics, morpho-phonological processes, stress assignment and intonation of the language. The inventory of phonemes in Menggwa is average for a Papuan language (15 consonants and 5 vowels). The vast majority of syllables come in the shape of V, CV or C1C2V where C2 can be /n/ /r/ /l/ /j/ or /w/. In C1C2V syllables, the sonority rises from C1 to V (§2.2.2). Nevertheless, there are a few words with word-medial consonant sequences like ft /ɸt/, lk /lk/, lf /lɸ/ or lk /lk/ where the sonority drops from the first to the second consonant; the first consonant in these sequences is analysed as the coda of the previous syllable (§2.2.3). Chapter 3 is an overview of the word classes in Menggwa Dla; the morphological, syntactic and semantic properties of the three major word classes (nouns, adjectives and verbs) and the minor word classes are compared in this chapter. Chapter 4 describes the properties of nouns and noun phrases; the person-number-gender categories, noun-phrasal syntax, nominal clitics and personal pronouns are outlined in this chapter. Menggwa Dla has a rich array of case, topic and focus markers which comes in the form of clitics (§4.5). Subject pronouns (‘citation pronouns’) only mark person (i.e. one for each of the three persons), whereas object and genitive pronouns mark person (including inclusive/exclusive first person), number, and sometimes also gender features (§4.6). Chapter 5 introduces various morphological and syntactic issues which are common to both independent and dependent clauses: verb stems, verb classes, cross-referencing, intraclausal syntax, syntactic transitivity and semantic valence. Cross-referencing in Menggwa Dla is complex: there are seven paradigms of subject cross-reference suffixes and four paradigms of object cross-references. Based on their cross-referencing patterns, verbs are classified into one of five verb classes (§5.2). There is often a mismatch between the number of cross-reference suffixes, the semantic valence, and the syntactic transitivity within a clause. There are verbs where the subject cross-reference suffix, or the object suffix, or both the subject and object suffixes are semantically empty (‘dummy cross-reference suffixes’; §5.3.2). Chapter 6 outlines the morphology of independent verbs and copulas. Verbal morphology differs greatly between the three statuses of realis, semi-realis and irrealis; a section is devoted to the morphology for each of the three statuses. Chapter 7 introduces the dependent clauses and verbal noun phrases. Different types of dependent verbs are deverbalised to various degrees: subordinate verbs are the least deverbalised, chain verbs are more deverbalised (but they mark switch-reference (SR), and sometimes also interclausal temporal relations), and non-finite chain verbs even more deverbalised. Further deverbalised than the non-finite chain verbs are the verbal nouns; verbal noun phrases in Menggwa Dla functions somewhat like complement clauses in English. In younger speakers speech, the function of the chain clause SR system has diverted from the canonical SR system used by older speakers (§7.2.2). For younger speakers, coreferential chain verb forms and disjoint-reference chain verb forms only have their coreferential and disjoint-referential meaning — respectively — when the person-number-gender features of the two subject cross-reference suffixes cannot resolve the referentiality of the two subjects. Otherwise, the coreferential chain verb forms have become the unmarked SR-neutral chain verb forms. At the end of this thesis are appendix 1, which contains four Menggwa Dla example texts, and appendix 2, which contains tables of cross-reference suffixes, pronouns, copulas and irregular verbs.

Martineau, Sébastien. "Percolation sur les groupes et modèles dirigés." Thesis, Lyon, École normale supérieure, 2014. http://www.theses.fr/2014ENSL0959/document.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis deals with two kinds of statistical mechanics problems: percolation ongroups and directed models. In the first case, we realise the group under considerationas a geometric object (via the notion of Cayley graph) before breaking it apartrandomly. The study of this process reveals deep connections between the geometricproperties of a group and the behaviour of Bernoulli percolation on it. In the secondcase, we focus on models where up and down play different roles, which makes severalquestions less hard to tackle.Chapter 1 strengthens the Indistinguishability Theorem of Lyons-Schramm, whichstates that the infinite clusters yielded by a Bernoulli percolation on a Cayley graphalmost surely all look alike. The non-Triviality of this strengthening is illustrated bya directed model that satisfies the Indistinguishability Property but not the StrongIndistinguishability Property.Chapter 2 has been obtained in collaboration with Vincent Tassion. We show thatthe value of the critical parameter for Bernoulli percolation essentially only dependson the local structure of the considered abelian Cayley graph. In Chapter 3, we introduce a directed version of the DLA model, for which weestablish the existence of an infinite volume dynamics, control the propagation ofinformation and prove asymptotic inequalities on the width and height of the cluster

Abstract:
AbstractThe dynamic load allowance (DLA) of the bridge structure is an important parameter in the bridge design. In order to study the variation law of displacement DLA and bending moment DLA of continuous girder bridge, taking 2 × 30 m continuous girder bridge and five-axis vehicles as the research object, the road roughness was simulated by the trigonometric series approach. With the help of ANSYS and APDL language, the influence of vehicle speeds, vehicle weights and road roughness on the displacement DLA and bending moment DLA are studied. The results show that the displacement DLA showed increasing trend with the increase of vehicle speed, and bending moment DLA showed increasing first and then decreasing; With the increase of body weight, the displacement DLA and bending moment DLA show a gradually increasing trend; Displacement DLA and bending moment DLA do have numerical differences. And the value of the displacement DLA is slightly larger than the value of the bending moment DLA. It is suggested that the displacement DLA and bending moment DLA should be distinguished in engineering design and dynamic load test. The research conclusion can provide reference for bridge structure engineering design and dynamic load test.
