Abstract:
Increasingly, there is a view that the recent emergence of sexual and gender diversity has helped to move mainstream society towards the eradication of the normative privileging of particular genders and sexualities. However, when we look beneath the surface it is more likely to be a reconfiguration of the heterosexual matrix, a term defined by Judith Butler as that grid of cultural intelligibility through which norms are created and maintained in bodies, genders, and desires and how they appear natural (Butler, 24). Using Judith Butler’s heterosexual matrix as my foundation, this paper will demonstrate the ways in which gender and sexuality become naturalized in order to explore the normalization process of both heterosexual desire, or orientation, and the gender binary. It will argue that although we are in the midst of a historic mobilization of diverse and complex (trans)gender movements, the sphere of intelligibility continues to be subject to hegemonic interpretations. These interpretations privilege a binary model of genders and sexual behaviors, thus resulting in a continuation of normative identities and desires. Further, as this essay will explicate, the heterosexual matrix, in accordance with neoliberalism, work as a mechanism of power that designates what is an intelligible life. As such, without first locating these functions of power, the push for a more fluid and open understanding of gender, sexuality and desire will continue to fail, and the space for widespread change will dissolve.

Abstract:
The aim of this paper is to explore the bodies of second-generation K-pop idols, who have internalized power relationships in the forms of regulated bodies, disciplined bodies and represented bodies. The sexual discourses enacted by second-generation idols’ agency present a wide spectrum of body possibilities. This spectrum has been created by systematic institutional actions that have made the bodies of the second-generation idols into docile bodies. In the power relationship, docile bodies represent synchronized performance enacted through the media. This paper examines how power is internalized in the bodies of the second-generation idols to create docile bodies and how docile bodies are represented in dance performance. To explore the power relationship of docile bodies, this paper applies Michel Foucault’s theory of power to analyze the reality program of Girls’ Generation.

Abstract:
Abstract The paper deals with corporeality in the school environment from a historical perspective. The body has tended to appear and disappear in the discourse and scientific disciplines and has permeated education. This permeation can be viewed traditionally within Merleau-Ponty’s phenomenological theory of the “lived body” but also in school discipline. Discipline is typically used to organise the school and is unquestionably associated with the body and corporeality. In this article, we therefore rely on Foucault’s theories. Docile bodies are typically found in schools and classrooms and are shaped by the institution so that they are easy to manage and control. In part, we demonstrate this using handwriting in schools as an example.

Abstract:
In the 1990s and 2000s, three Finnish comics magazines were established for comics made by women. Drawing from a multidisciplinary framework of studies on feminism, gender and humour, this article argues that the magazines used the comics form to discuss feminist issues and to disrupt essentialist conceptions and expectations about gender. The common denominator for the magazines was the use of humour as a tool, although humoristic strategies and understandings of gender varied. This article gives an overview of the development of Finnish feminist comics by situating the magazines within the discussion of women’s comics that was ongoing in Finland in the early 1990s and 2000s, and by reflecting on the magazines’ impact on present-day feminist comics in Finland.

Abstract:
Abandonment, dispossession and the production of entire populations of surplus human life are inscribed within the multiform and situated practices through which neoliberal ordering is achieved on a global scale. Where this abandonment and dispossession is contested, governmental practices have been extended to incorporate a multileveled and increasingly insidious assemblage of tactics, apparatuses and rationalities geared toward containing and managing contestation. This thesis is about the relations between these situated practices of ordering and contestation. In it, I trace the trajectories of two concrete struggles in Colombia - peasant contestation of the dispossession visited upon them in the context of BP's investment in oilfields and workers' mobilisations against labour casualisation at Coca-Cola's bottling plants - from their origins in a heavily-militarised and heavily-marketised biopolitics to their emergence as international campaigns. Borrowing from Michel Foucault's comments on liberalism and Jacques Ranciere's discussion of politics, I conceptualise these struggles as the domain of politically surplus subjects, those who refuse to conduct themselves as parts of the population, who challenge distinctions between which life counts and which life does not count that are inscribed within market-based governmental rationalities. My interest is in how political surplus is routinely nullified, not only through violent repression, but also through technologies of civil society aimed at the incorporation of dissenting subjects as manageable parts of the population. I address the interplay between these techniques by extending Foucault's discussion of a dispositif of security as the "essential technical mechanism" of a liberal governmentality that limits itself by reference to the "necessities" of the market. Security, for Foucault, is about letting things happen but nullifying them, allowing them to cancel themselves out, not prohibiting social and political excess in advance but keeping what is risky or inconvenient within optimal limits. I suggest that optimal forms of global civil society are founded upon the exclusion of those forms of dissent that cannot be so readily contained within the terms of neoliberal order.

Full text
Abstract:
The older woman's body is an example of the discontinuous nature of those beings who come under the rubric of woman and, as such, demontrates the impossibility of a unitary representation of woman. This thesis explores the social construction of the older woman's body both as abject and as 'docile/useful' and proposes how this abjectification can be re-inscribed as transgressive through a de-territorialization of the older woman's body. This thesis positions the older woman's body as (un)becoming because it lacks cultural intelligibility as representative of the feminine on the one hand and, on the other, because it disrupts normative ideals of femininity and eludes disciplinary practices. Sexuality is used as a resource to conjure, construct, reinforce and validate the 'ideal' woman, a model against which the older woman is redefined as asexual. I argue that the particular technologies employed in the production of the older woman's 'docile/useful' body are those of the health sciences. A 'docile/useful' body transforms the older woman into a knowable, treatable and profitable body through discourses of health. Mass mammographic screening is analysed in order to illustrate how the biomedical sciences are employed in the regulation of the older woman's body through the co-option of health promotion strategy as a disciplinary practice.

Edgecombe, Samuel. "Dressed for School Success : A study into School Uniform and Dress Codes in Sweden and the United Kingdom." Thesis, Växjö University, Växjö University, School of Social Sciences, 2009. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:vxu:diva-6505.

Abstract:

This study highlights a number of different aspects regarding uniforms and dress codes in the United Kingdom (UK) and Sweden. The study comprises three parts: a quantitative comparison of GCSE pass rates for schools in the UK that do and do not have school uniforms, a qualitative survey study of Scottish High School pupils' perceptions about their uniform and a qualitative interview study of Swedish teachers, administrators and pupils about their school dress, rules regarding school dress and school uniforms.

Regarding whether uniforms improved academic results by comparing GCSE pass rates in the UK we were unable to find conclusive evidence to suggest that schools which had uniform policies performed significantly better than other schools.

Regarding Scottish pupils’ perceptions of their uniforms, pupils from lower-educated backgrounds were more likely to perceive that they were told off by teachers about not wearing the correct dress. When asked whether pupils felt more equal compared to their peers, those from lower-educated background were more likely to think that uniforms do not help to level out class difference compared to pupils from better educated backgrounds. Regarding bullying, even though uniforms existed at the school studied bullying due to what pupils wore to school still existed and pupils perceived that bullying due to other factors such as physical appearance also occurred.

Regarding the results from interviews with teachers and administrators in the Swedish town studied, most teachers took a fairly relaxed attitude towards pupils’ dress although the dress code of not wearing outdoor clothes in High Schools was policed quite strongly. Teachers saw the issue of female pupils dressing overtly sexually as the biggest problem and this was dealt with on an individual level rather than a class level.

High school pupils’ opinions of their dress code varied. Some hated the school rule that they were not allowed to wear outdoor clothes, whereas for others it was not seen as a big deal. A number of pupils thought that what you wore in class does not affect their learning outcomes. Very few pupils thought that introducing a uniform would be a good idea. Pupils at Sixth Form College had a more mature attitude towards their dress and were able to reflect back on their experiences from High School. They did not think that the issue of dress was a major issue in Sixth Form College however this did vary slightly between the three schools studied. Pupils at two of the schools perceived the dress code of the third school as being more formal, but this was due mainly to prejudice according to a number of pupils. The large majority of Sixth Form College students thought that introducing school uniform would be a bad idea and that bullying would not be eradicated because pupils can always pick on other attributes, not just clothing. However there were a couple of Sixth Form College that thought that introducing it would be a good way to reduce peer-pressure to buy the right clothes in High School.

Abstract:
Abstract Many health, environmental, and quality-of-life benefits due to cycling have been identified, including exercise, zero-emissions, reduced pavement requirements compared to cars and busses, and nearly silent operation. A significant fraction of the population, however, is unable to join in this activity with traditional upright bicycles, including people with balance or joint limitations caused by injury, disease, or age. One solution to these ergonomic difficulties is the recumbent bicycle, but many riders find them difficult to balance and steer because of several factors, including center of mass location and distribution. Another solution, the recumbent tricycle, must have a wide axle track and/or low center of mass for lateral stability when turning, which requires more pavement and creates more aerodynamic drag than the bicycle equivalent. We present a solution that aims to combine the best attributes of these vehicles and eliminate the drawbacks: a tilting tricycle with variable stability that the rider can control manually. It balances and leans into corners like a bicycle when going fast, and it balances and stays upright like a tricycle when stopped or going slow to reduce the steering burden on the rider. Between these two extremes, the rider can finely adjust exactly how docile a bicycle it mimics.
