There has been a significant increase in the numbers of students undertaking doctoral study over the last 20-30 years. This means that the PhD is no longer solely an elite degree designed to prepare graduates for an academic career. Instead, emphasis has increasingly been placed on the role of the PhD in producing 'advanced knowledge workers' who are expected to make a contribution to the production of knowledge in a knowledge-driven economy. This has led to an increased focus on the educational dimension of the PhD and the educational processes involved in developing students to become resear

Abstract:
Bohm's model for quantum mechanics is examined and a well-known drawback of the model is considered, namely the fact that the model does not conserve energy and momentum. It is shown that the Lagrangian formalism and the use of energy-momentum tensors provide a way of addressing this non-conservation aspect once the model is considered from the point of view of an interacting particle-field system. The full mathematical formulation that is then presented demonstrates that conservation can be reintroduced without disrupting the present agreement of Bohm's model with experiment.

Abstract:
This thesis develops an approach to midwifery that is more open to the (un)known, to the (un)thought, to the (im)possible. It argues for practitioners who have an ethical responsibility to embrace difference and to welcome the other. In this thesis I write of ways midwives and others ‘word the world’ and act in it, in order to understand how midwives can and do embrace opening themselves to possibilities and difference, in order that childbearing women will not have their possibilities for personhood closed. As a midwife and a midwife-academic, I ask how current discursive practices in midwife

Abstract:
Ericoid mycorrhizal fungi form mycorrhizal associations with Ericaceae plants and are regarded as essential to the ecological fitness of the plants in extremely nutrition-poor soils world-wide. The culturable fungible assemblages associated with hair roots of Epacris pulchella and Rhododendron lochiae (Ericaceae) from different forest habitats in eastern Australia were investigated using rDNA internal transcribed spacer (ITS) restriction fragment length polymorphisms (RFLPs) and sequence analysis, and the abilities of the fungi to form ericoid mycorrhizas were tested. Abstract:
In this thesis a number of disparate subjects and notions are drawn together in order to move toward a coherent perspective on the notion of an organisation and the way in which organisations may be seen to survive. The contribution of the work and knowledge management in order to produce a 'frame' for the way in which organisational change and survival may be discussed. The assumptions are made that the notions of the learning organisation and knowledge management are subsets of organisational survival. An examination of how these notions have been interpreted in organisations provides the co

A literature review revealed the strong evidence that youth aged 16 to 25 years (World Health Organisation, 1989) in many jurisdictions world-wide report experiencing significant harmful impacts arising from gambling. The exact nature and prevalence of these impacts and the processes that underlie their origins remain obscure in part because of the common assumption that measures and criteria developed with adult populations may be applied to youth. Therefore, the approach adopted in this doctoral sequence of empirical studies was to focus on the core addictive construct of self-control (Heath

Gray, Michael J. "Development of reversed-phase two-dimensional liquid chromatographic systems for the separation of complex samples." Thesis, 2005. http://handle.uws.edu.au:8081/1959.7/23423.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis describes a developmental process required for the construction and optimisation of two-dimensional liquid chromatographic systems. The text encompasses much of the difficulties and provides a frame work for achieving positive results. The hardware requirements and the concepts for successful completion of heart-cutting and comprehensive modes of separation are addressed. Low molecular weight polystyrenes play an essential role in providing a model framework or theme for the development of two-dimensional liquid chromatographic systems. Low-molecular weight oligostyrenes were initi

Hicks, David James. "Development and evaluation of a system for the study of mineral nutrition of sacred lotus (Nelumbo nucifera)." Thesis, 2005. http://handle.uws.edu.au:8081/1959.7/23184.

Abstract:
The sacred lotus (Nelumbo nucifera) is a large aquatic plant endemic to subtropical and tropical Asia and northern Australia. Lotus has a combination of morphological and anatomical features that make it challenging for research work. The necessity of research on lotus is driven by niche market opportunities identified in Japan during counter seasonal production periods. Several features of lotus are utilised for consumer applications with commercial promise including seeds, young shoots and rhizome production. Further, the flowers and seed pods have value as cut-flower products and religious

Abstract:
Institutional investors have typically involved commercial property in their core portfolios for stable and income-oriented returns, particularly concentrated on low-risk traditional property sectors including office, retail and industrial property. Recent years have seen the strong growth in demand for quality commercial properties resulting in an imbalanced property investment market, with significant capital flows available (eg: growth in superannuation fund assets) for property investment from this increased appetite for commercial property. This has also been driven by some basic factors
