Smith, Brian. "The historical development of the doctrine of Original Grace in church history and its viability in the context of Stone-Campbell movement soteriology." Thesis, University of Exeter, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/10036/3038.

Abstract:
The purpose of this project is to investigate the historical and theological origins of the doctrine of Original Grace and test its viability within Stone-Campbell soteriology. Chapter 1 seeks to provide an exhaustive literature review of those works of the proponents of Original Grace in which they discuss the doctrine in order to demonstrate the place of Original Grace within each tradition, and to make specific connections from the ideas of each writer to their respective theological, philosophical, and historical influences. Chapter 2 explores the exegetical basis for the doctrine of Original Grace. The bulk of attention is given to Romans 5:12-21, as the principal passage cited in discussions of the subject, and to the exegesis of Jack Cottrell, who displays the most current and developed version of the doctrine of Original Grace. I seek, primarily, to delve deeply into the text to gain a deeper understanding of the ways in which the doctrine of Original Grace has been extracted from this text, explore the most detailed textual justification that has been provided for the doctrine, and ultimately determine what is at stake in the unique reading of the text that brings out Original Grace. Secondarily, I seek to assess whether the Original Grace interpretation of the passage is successful on its own terms. Chapter 3 aims to make a significant contribution to Stone-Campbell Movement theology, and also contribute to wider contemporary theological conversations from within the Stone-Campbell Movement. Specifically, I seek to discover how the doctrine of Original Grace fares in conversation with other accounts of grace and salvation, both as a potential contribution, and by running the gauntlet of critique within that conversation. The chapter makes this contribution by discussing the theological and practical implications of Original Grace, identifying and analyzing both the doctrine’s theological strengths and weaknesses, describing and evaluating the theological contribution of the doctrine of Original Grace in regard to the three most critical exegetical issues, and assessing the viability of Original Grace as part of the traditional and contemporary Stone-Campbell soteriological system.

Descotes, Pierre. Thesis, Paris 4, 2012. http://www.theses.fr/2012PA040147.

Full text
Abstract:
The De gratia noui Testamenti (= epistula 140), which is both a treatise and a letter composed by the Bishop of Hippo Regius at the beginning of year 412, presents Augustine’s thoughts on the connections between divine grace and human freedom in a remarkably synthetic way, first because of the circumstances in which it was written, which place it at the junction of very different debates, and secondly because of its originality on a literary point of view, which links it to several genres. This thesis comprises three parts. First, we propose an introduction to the treatise, which presents its main aspects – among which, the historical problems it poses, the literary questions it raises and the insight it offers into Augustine’s way of thinking. Then we have established the edition (which corrects that of the CSEL, which dates from the beginning of the 20th century) and the translation from a study of its manuscript tradition. Finally, our commentary strives to enlighten the debatable passages of the epistle in order to highlight its main historical, literary and philosophical interests

Harvey, Andrew. "Original sin, grace and free will in the works of Jeremy Taylor." Thesis, University of Birmingham, 2012. http://etheses.bham.ac.uk//id/eprint/3286/.

Full text
Abstract:
Taylor is an early example of a divine who wanted to find a way of remaining an orthodox Christian while rejecting the Augustinian doctrine of original sin. Taylor could not see how the term ‘sin’could be correctly applied to anything but an individual’freely-chosen acts. However, he recognised that the reduction of the Christian concept of sin to particular sins constituted the Pelagian heresy. He attempted to avoid it by placing the insight behind the traditional doctrine in the challenge posed to the will by a naturalised version of the Augustinian fallen state, which was nonetheless morally indifferent in itself. The insights and confusions in Taylor’treatment of original sin and his anthropology, notably regarding the human will and its freedom, provide a fruitful basis for a more general consideration of the question of ‘orthodoxy’concerning original sin and the classical Christian doctrine of man.

Hagberg, Josefin.

Abstract:
- Hur förs resonemanget i Svenska kyrkan kring arvsyndsläran under perioden 2000– 2015?

Abstract:
Hadriaan Beverland (1650-1716) was banished from Holland in 1679. Why did this humanist scholar get into so much trouble in the most tolerant part of Europe in the seventeenth century? In an attempt to answer this question, this thesis places Beverland's writings on sex, sin, Scripture, and scholarship in their historical context for the first time. Beverland argued that lust was the original sin and highlighted the importance of sex in human nature, ancient history, and his own society. His works were characterized by his erudite Latin, satirical style, and disregard for traditional genres and hierarchies in early modern scholarship. Dutch theologians disliked his theology and exegesis, and hated his use of erudition to mock their learning, morality, and authority. Beverland's humanist colleagues did not support his studies either, because they believed that drawing attention to the sexual side of the classics threatened the basis of the humanist enterprise. When theologians asked for his arrest and humanist professors left him to his fate, Dutch magistrates were happy to convict Beverland because he had insolently accused the political and economic, as well as the religious and intellectual elite of the Dutch Republic, of hypocrisy. By restricting sex to marriage, in compliance with Reformed doctrine, secular authorities upheld a sexual morality that was unattainable, Beverland argued. He proposed honest discussion of the problem of sex and suggested that greater sexual liberty for the male elite might be the solution. Beverland's crime was to expose the gap between principle and practice in sexual relations in Dutch society, highlighting the hypocrisy of a deeply conflicted elite at a precarious time. His intervention came at the moment when the uneasy balance struck between Reformed orthodoxy, humanist scholarship, economic prosperity, and patrician politics, which had characterized the Golden Age of the Dutch Republic, was disintegrating, with unsettling consequences for all concerned. Placing Beverland's fate in this context of change provides a fresh perspective on the intellectual environment of the Republic in the last decades of the seventeenth century.

Abstract:
Original sin in economy literature is defined as the inability of countries to borrow in domestic currency from abroad (even from local markets with long maturities and fixed-rate). There are two dimensions of the problem, international and domestic. In this thesis, some of theories on determinants of international original sin phenomenon are investigated. The results suggest that absolute size of the economy is a significant determinant of the international original sin. Financial and economic development is also found to be necessary in order to redeem from the original sin problem. Existence of strong policies and institutions, monetary credibility, and flexible exchange rate regime are found as other significant factors in terms of explaining the phenomenon. Countries that faces credit market imperfections and poor contract enforcement more prone to original sin problem.

Abstract:
This thesis argues that Jean-Paul Sartre's early philosophy retained a recognizable inheritance from the Christian doctrine of original sin. On the standard reading, Sartre's most fundamental and attractive idea - the idea that brought him his reputation as 'the philosopher of his generation' - is freedom. But, as Sarah Richmond notes, Sartre's interest in phenomenology 'co-existed with and was an instrument for his wish to demonstrate the existence of human freedom, and his sense that the way to do this was by establishing an essential connection of consciousness with nothingness.' Taking Being and Nothingness as its primary exegetical focus, this thesis argues that the early, anti-humanist Sartre retained a recognizable descendant of the Christian doctrine of original sin in his concept of le néant. Previous scholars have noted the resemblance between Sartre's and Augustine's ontology: to name but one shared theme, both thinkers describe the human as the being through which nothingness enters the world. But no in-depth examination of this 'resemblance' has been made. Using historical, exegetical, and conceptual methods, my research demonstrates that Sartre's intellectual formation prior to his discovery of phenomenology included theological elements which are often overlooked by Sartre scholars - especially in the English-speaking philosophical community, where his phenomenological influences receive greater attention. The thesis therefore (i) outlines the French Augustinianisms by which, I argue, Sartre's account of the human as 'between being and nothingness' was informed; in order to (ii) undertake a close reading of Being and Nothingness, which shows (a) that the psychological, epistemological, and ethical consequences of Sartre's le néant closely resemble the consequences of its theological predecessor and (b) that his account of freedom can be read as an anti-theodicy; and finally (iii) to argue constructively that Sartre is a useful resource for contemporary hamartiology. In doing so it contributes to both Sartre scholarship and the theological sub-discipline of modern doctrine.

Asue, Daniel Ude. "Baptism and Original Sin in the Early Church : contributions of Tertullian." Diss., University of Pretoria, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/2263/41375.

Full text
Abstract:
This study examines the baptismal practices of the early Christian community using Tertullian’s ethical text on baptism in relation to his other writings to dialogue with the Roman Catholic understanding of baptism, original sin and grace. Tertullian referring to the sacramental form of baptism that is done with water, held that baptism is indispensable for salvation because it imparts the grace that washes away original sin and makes someone a Christian; and capable of attaining a matured Christian life. At the moment, the Roman Catholic Church does not confer baptism of water on polygamists, and subsequently fails to admit them to her sacramental life because of their polygamous relations. This raises a question regarding the salvation of these polygamous families. How do they receive baptismal grace and become part of the church? This study argues that church and baptism were inseparable right from the beginning of Christianity in the New Testament. People became members of the church by the fact of their baptism. This study does a hermeneutical retrieval of the early church’s teaching on baptism and original sin in the light of Tertullian as the pillar of western theology. The study concludes by invoking pastoral consideration to baptize polygamous families (husband and wives) who married before converting to the faith. They are not to enter into any new marriage after baptism since they have received Christ in their state. “Go and sin no more,” says Christ.

Alsford, Sally Elizabeth. "Sin as a problem of twentieth century systematic theology." Thesis, Durham University, 1987. http://etheses.dur.ac.uk/7067/.

Full text
Abstract:
The argument of my thesis concerns the understanding of the doctrine of sin in systematic theology, and, as a corollary of this, the scope of the doctrine in terms of its content. My argument is that the doctrine of sin is particularly prone to being defined with a strictness or narrowness which causes it to lose much of its meaning; that such limiting treatment tends to be accompanied by distorted relationships with, or over-determination by, other key doctrines, particularly that of salvation; and that it is helpful to see this tendency as a failure to see sin as a symbol with a complex of meanings, this complex being essential to the doctrine. A brief introductory survey of the usual perspectives on sin and of recent monographs firstly indicates the major issues raised by sin. Then more detailed analysis of the work of Barth, Brunner, Rahner, Pannenberg and Ricoeur provides examples of different methods of dealing with sin and leads to the conclusion that the tension between freedom and inevitability is essential to the doctrine of sin: it is part of sin's meaning and attempts to suppress, explain or relocate it lead to unacceptable tensions elsewhere. The use of Ricoeur's analysis of the symbolism of evil as a critical tool demonstrates the significance of the Adamic narrative for Christian doctrine, and the way in which its neglect can lead to the acquisition of ideas characteristic of non-Christian mythologies. The positive suggestion of the thesis is that sin should be seen as a tensive symbol incorporating a wide complex of meanings and involving a specific mythology of "the beginning" and that its paradoxical nature should be maintained as indicating a conflict within humanity, and seen in relationship to the suffering of God in Christ.

Mota, Francisco. ""Be angry, but do not sin": For a new understanding of Christian anger." Thesis, Boston College, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/2345/bc-ir:107474.

Full text
Abstract:

From its earliest days, Christianity has debated about when and how force can be used to repel harm without incurring sin. Although moderation and restriction have often been advocated both on a personal and on a social level, strict passivity has rarely been the proposed solution in mainstream Christianity when individuals or nations are confronted with harm. The Just War tradition, in its many variations, was born precisely out of this desire to make sense of how force can be used in a Christian way. And it soon became the prevalent theory throughout Christianity to address issues of violence, war, and force in general. What this thesis intends to argue is that Just War theory, despite all its pervasiveness, is flawed in some crucial aspects when scrutinized from a Christian viewpoint. Three such aspects seem to be especially relevant: Just War tradition is not grounded enough in Scripture; its jus ad bellum and jus in bello criteria do not protect in a satisfactory way the innocent who face harm; and it is a theory that is only reactive to force being imposed upon others. Because of these three flaws, it will be claimed that in the process of giving its support to Just War theory Christianity has largely forgotten an older, broader tradition. The “be angry, but do not sin” tradition has Scriptural and philosophical roots that, when combined, can bring a Christian virtue ethics to a much better understanding of when and how forceful intervention in the social sphere is required. At the very least, this anger tradition does not fall prey to the three criticisms that are addressed towards Just War – and that seems to make it especially valuable. Righteous anger, then, and not Just War, should be what guides Christianity in its thinking about how and when force can be used without incurring sin. That is the contention of this thesis

Wotherspoon, Iain David. "Original sin : divine and symbolic violence in the turn to the Apostle Paul." Thesis, University of Glasgow, 2016. http://theses.gla.ac.uk/7331/.

Full text
Abstract:
When we take a step back from the imposing figure of physical violence, it becomes possible to examine other structurally violent forces that constantly shape our cultural and political landscapes. One of the driving interests in the “turn to Paul” in recent continental philosophy stems from wrestling with questions about the real nature of contemporary violence. Paul is positioned as a thinker whose messianic experience began to cut through the violent masquerade of the existing order. The crucifixion and resurrection of the Messiah (a slave and a God co-existing in one body) exposed the empty grounding upon which power resided. The Christ-event signifies a moment of violent interruption in the existing order which Paul enjoins the Gentiles to participate in through a dedication of love for the neighbour. This divine violence aims to reveal and subvert the “powers,” epitomised in the Roman Empire, in order to fulfil the labour of the Messianic now-time which had arrived. The impetus behind this research comes from a typically enigmatic and provocative section of text by the Slovene philosopher, cultural critic, and Christian atheist Slavoj Žižek. He claims that 'the notion of love should be given here all its Paulinian weight: the domain of pure violence… is the domain of love' (2008a, 173). In this move he links Paul’s idea of love to that of Walter Benjamin’s divine violence; the sublime and the cataclysmic come together in this seemingly perverse notion. At stake here is the way in which uncovering violent forces in the “zero-level” of our narrative worldviews aids the diagnosis of contemporary political and ethical issues. It is not enough to imagine Paul’s encounter with the Christ-event as non-violent. This Jewish apocalyptic movement was engaged in a violent struggle within an existing order that God’s wrath will soon dismantle. Paul’s weak violence, inspired by his fidelity to the Christ-event, places all responsibility over creation in the role of the individual within the collective body. The centre piece of this re-imagined construction of the Pauline narrative comes in Romans 13: the violent dedication to love understood in the radical nature of the now-time. 3 This research examines the role that narratives play in the creation and diagnosis of these violent forces. In order to construct a new genealogy of violence in Christianity it is crucial to understand the role of the slave of Christ (the revolutionary messianic subject). This turn in the Symbolic is examined through creating a literary structure in which we can approach a radical Nietzschean shift in Pauline thought. The claim here, a claim which is also central to Paul’s letters, is that when the symbolic violence which manipulates our worldviews is undone by a divine violence, if even for a moment, new possibilities are created in the opening for a transvaluation of values. Through this we uncover the nature of original sin: the consequences of the interconnected reality of our actions. The role of literature is vital in the construction of this narrative; starting with Cormac McCarthy’s No Country for Old Men, and continuing through works such as Melville’s Bartleby the Scrivener, this thesis draws upon the power of literature in the shaping of our narrative worlds. Typical of the continental philosophy at the heart of this work, a diverse range of illustrations and inspirations from fiction is pulled into its narrative to reflect the symbolic universe that this work was forged through. What this work attempts to do is give this theory a greater grounding in Paul’s letters by demonstrating this radical kenotic power at the heart of the Christ-event. Romans 13 reveals, in a way that has not yet been picked up by Critchley, Žižek, and others, that Paul opposed the biopolitical power of the Roman Empire through the weak violence of love that is the labour of the slaves of Christ on the “now-time” that had arrived.

Christman, Robert John. "Heretics in Luther's homeland: The controversy over original sin in late sixteenth-century Mansfeld." Diss., The University of Arizona, 2004. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/290025.

Full text
Abstract:
During the early 1570s, a dispute over the theological definition of original sin rent the central German county of Mansfeld, homeland of Martin Luther. The controversy, initiated by Matthias Flacius Illyricus, divided the conservative Gnesio-Lutheran clergy into two hostile camps. One, led by the Superintendent Hieronymus Mencel, was centered in the city of Eisleben and rejected Flacius's definition of original sin. The other, centered in the city of Tal Mansfeld, was led by the powerful deacon, historian, and polemicist Cyriacus Spangenberg, and accepted Flacius's definition. This dissertation examines the central doctrinal premises over which these clerics fought, as well as their broader implications for Lutheran theology, before turning to other social, political, and economic factors that influenced the clerics' decisions to side with one group or the other. But the controversy was not limited to the clergy. The counts of Mansfeld, numbering between seven and ten during the period and stemming from three dynastic lines, also split over the issue of original sin. One line sided with the group of clerics centered in Eisleben, two with the pastors headquartered in Tal Mansfeld. This study explores the involvement of the counts in the debate over doctrine, but also addresses the various political and other non-religious forces that caused them to split over the issue. With the pastors preaching and pamphleteering and the counts battling among themselves, it did not take long for the laity to become deeply involved and divided over the issue of original sin. Contemporary sources suggest that the miners of Mansfeld fought in the streets and taverns over the issue. This study explores how the clerics articulated the debate to the laity, and the degree to which these commoners understood it. Furthermore, it explores social and other non-religious reasons why the laity took sides in this doctrinal debate. This dissertation argues that although a variety of forces were at play pushing members of these three groups--the clerics, counts, and commoners--in one direction or another, an interest in the doctrinal issue and its implications for wider theology was a motivating theme central to each group.

Sabella, Jeremy Luis. "The Politics of Original Sin: Reinhold Niebuhr's Christian Realism and its Cold War Realist Reception." Thesis, Boston College, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/2345/bc-ir:104410.

Abstract:
Thesis advisor: Michael J. Himes
Reinhold Niebuhr is among the most politically and theologically influential--and most misunderstood--American thinkers of the twentieth century. This misunderstanding is the product of a tendency among Niebuhr's admirers and critics alike to overlook the elaborate interplay of the theology and politics in Niebuhr's thought. I argue that Niebuhr understood himself as a preacher to religion's "cultured despisers," and that Niebuhr construed this role in fundamentally theological terms. As a consequence, there is a dynamic theology underlying his political engagement with the broader culture. Chief among the "cultured despisers" drawn to Niebuhr's thought were the political realists who dominated early Cold War politics. They were particularly compelled by the political insights of Niebuhr's Christian Realism, and proceeded to incorporate these insights into own realist visions. I argue that in the act of appropriating Niebuhr the political realists unwittingly absorbed much of his theology; and in neglecting to recognize the theological underpinnings to Niebuhr's political insights, they ended up misconstruing Niebuhr in important ways. I seek to demonstrate that fully appreciating Niebuhr's contributions to political discourse requires an awareness of how theology suffuses even his most overtly political writings. This project consists of two parts. Part One examines the theological formation of the concept at the heart of Niebuhr's Christian Realism: namely, the doctrine of original sin. From the outset, Niebuhr maintained that elaborating the full political implications of original sin required a theological structure. Through sustained conversations with theological contemporaries Karl Barth, Paul Tillich, Emil Brunner, and his brother H. Richard Niebuhr, Reinhold elaborated the distinctive theological anthropology, understanding of grace and redemption, and account of the dynamic interplay between faith and history underlying his exploration of original sin and its political implications. Niebuhr's Christian Realism, I suggest, is inextricably theological. Part Two analyses Niebuhr's reception among three of the most prominent midcentury political realists: Hans Morgenthau, George Kennan, and Arthur Schlesinger. Although they were among Niebuhr's most astute interpreters, all three figures wrongly presumed that they could extricate the political elements of Niebuhr's thinking on original sin from the theological structure in which this thinking was embedded, and import only these political elements into their own realist visions. Their uses of the concept of original sin indicate that they both adopt far more of Niebuhr's theology than they ever intended to, and misconstrue some of his most profound insights. I close by considering what a theologically grounded Christian Realism has to offer political discourse

Abstract:
In 2017, the Church of Sweden elected a new service-book which is mandatory for the liturgy in the ceremonies. This undergraduate thesis aims to analyze the prayers of forgiveness to recognize the hamartiology, understandings of sin, in the Church of Sweden. The main question asked was: "In the moment of Prayers of forgiveness in the handbook of the Church of Sweden, which different ideas of sin and forgiveness can be identified?". A total of eight prayers of forgiveness were analyzed with three sub-questions: (A) How is the sin understood? (B) How does God relate to sin? (C) To the person praying, what change does the prayer aim to affect? The theories in this paper were based on contemporary, Lutheran theology, with the origins from the Church of Sweden, linked to sin and forgiveness. The prayers were compared with different understandings of the original sin (ontological sin, and structural sin) and the actual sin (subjective sin and objective sin). The result of the thesis revealed that the actual sins were the most common in the prayers of forgiveness. The structural sin can be understood as the original sin as being structures one is born into. As shown in the first two prayers, named B1 and B2 in this paper, the idea of an ontological sin was identified in various prayers, such as B4, B5, and B8. The B3, B6, and B7 prayers were lacking a direct link to the original sin and were instead directed towards a God described as loving and merciful. The subjective sin was expressed through the encouragement of self-reflection in B3 and B6. The objective sin was identified in most of the prayers.

Abstract:

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis comprises a re-evaluation of the feminist theological critique, as given by Valerie Saiving, Judith Plaskow, Daphne Hampson and Susan Nelson Dunfee, of Reinhold Niebuhr's doctrine of sin. The re-evaluation proceeds from a contextual interpretation of Niebuhr's theology in general and a contextual reading of his doctrine of sin in particular. My argument is that Niebuhr is deliberately and consistently a contextual theologian. I locate his contextual methodology in the open-ended approach of Christian realism.
The feminist critique is based on the assumption that Niebuhr universally defines the primary sin as pride. It is argued that pride is in fact a distinctly male characteristic, and, while quite plausibly the primary sin for men, is clearly not the primary sin for women. Niebuhr is guilty, that is, of confusing male reality with human reality in the doctrine. Saiving and Plaskow then develop a definition of women's sin which they correspond with Niebuhr's sin of sensuality. This type of sin, rather than being self-aggrandizing, is characterized by inordinate and destructive self-effacement. Their subsidiary argument is that Niebuhr erroneously treats sensuality, which should be equal but opposite to pride, as a secondary form of sin.
My argument in this thesis is that the critique rests on a mistaken assumption about the universality of Niebuhr's claim. His concerns were with the powerful. The contextual claim that pride is the primary form of sin in those who are empowered is being mistaken for a claim that pride is the primary sin for all people, regardless of gender or context. My subsidiary argument is that the correlation of women's sin with Niebuhr's understanding of sensuality is mistaken. What the feminists refer to as women's sin is in fact not sin at all for Niebuhr but evidence of injustice. (Abstract shortened by UMI.)

Abstract:
The main structural characteristic of the International Monetary System (IMS) is its highly hierarchical character, the consequences of which are manifested themselves within the economic system. In the less developed economies, in particular, these consequences may occur in the form of "weak" or inconvertible currencies, less financing opportunities through the financial market and greater instability of capital flows, as well as deterioration of the level of internal autonomy regarding the use of economic policies in the process of development and macroeconomic stability of each national economy. Among the phenomena that unfold from the hierarchy of national currencies is the original domestic sin, which is related to the difficulty that some countries present in the issuance of public debt bonds in the domestic market denominated in local currency and which are simultaneously fixed and long-term. Among the negative consequences of this phenomenon are the mismatch of liabilities and assets of public accounts and the deterioration of the government's solvency capacity in the presence of exchange devaluations or high interest rates and inflation. In addition to seeking to overcome the domestic original sin in Brazil, the present study has it is importance backed by the fragility of the Brazilian currency in the international hierarchy and, consequently, it’s greater exposure to risk and dysfunctions that result from it. The objective of this study is to calculate the indices referring to domestic original sin between 2001 and April 2016 in the Brazilian federal securities market. For this, the calculation of three distinct and complementary indices formulated by Hausmann and Panizza (2003) were used. Among the results obtained, it was possible to verify that the reduction of the external public debt burden was carried out at the cost of the substantial increase of the public indebtedness base through the securities market. It is also observed that in the period evaluated the federal public securities market in Brazil experienced significant transformations. However, domestic federal securities debt is currently heavily indexed to inflation and with significant participation of low maturity fixed rate securities, as well as maintaining a considerable portion of SELIC indexed securities. It was evidenced by the results of the indices that the measures implemented by the Federal Government throughout the decade of 2000, led to a change in the form of manifestation of original domestic sin, however, without any sensible change in its acute magnitude in the Country.

Russell, Edward J. N. "The role of secular discourse in theological anthropology and the doctrine of sin : a comparative study of Alistair McFadyen and Karl Barth." Thesis, University of St Andrews, 2003. http://hdl.handle.net/10023/13541.

Full text
Abstract:
Contemporary theology increasingly is concerned with 'inter-disciplinary dialogue'. There has, however, been little work done on the under-girding structures of such a dialogue. The central concern of this thesis is to explore the methodological foundations for the relation between 'theology' and 'secular discourse'. Although there are many possibilities for testing the relation between theology and secular discourse, theological anthropology and the doctrine of sin are used as the primary testing grounds because they are central to the concerns of much contemporary systematic theology as well as being areas to which the secular world has much to contribute. Alistair McFadyen's and Karl Barth's work in these areas is adopted as the particular focus of the thesis. Together their work offers a rich environment for analysing the methodological issues at stake in the relationship between theology and secular discourse. The primary aim of the thesis is to offer an approach to interdisciplinary dialogue which maintains 'the priority of God' in theological method whilst recognising that engagement with secular discourse enables theology 'to do its job better'. Drawing from McFadyen's and Barth's work in theological anthropology and the doctrine of sin, some methodological foundations for structuring the relation between theology and secular discourse are laid out and stated in a more widely applicable form.

This study intends to work up the origins fault topic and its consequences to human nature, which will be called in the 5th century Original Sin by Saint Augustine, directly in reference to Adam s sin. However, before dealing with Adam s sin, as related in Judeo-Christian Holy Writ, aiming at answering the question that names this dissertation Original Sin: an Augustinian inheritance? , it seemed advisable to increase research field, although moderately. So the possibility of finding the idea of origins fault in other traditions is considered, as related in the Book of Genesis. As a result, before entering the biblical narration about Adam s and Eve s sin, this research studies other myths, namely: Prometheus s and Pandora s myth; Zoroastrian Myth on the world creation. After analyzing the above mentioned myths, the study focuses on the biblical narration about Adam s and Eve s sin and its interpretation by Paul the Apostle and by Church Fathers, who had in Saint Augustine s thought their theological systemization under construction about Adam s sin. A systemization that takes place mainly because of Pelagian controversy, which denied human nature s defectibility attributed to the first parents sin, called by Augustine original sin . Finally, the influence of Augustinian thought concerning the original sin in the Church will be studied; the first definitions; Augustinian thought through two great Scholastic theologians: Anselm of Canterbury and Thomas Aquinas; the Council of Trent and the dogmatic definition to all the Church about the original sin, based on Augustine s thought; the relation between two dogmas: Original Sin and Immaculate Conception; the concept of original sin in face of new scientific discovers and of the Second Vatican Council. Thus this study intends to ponderate the concept of original sin not properly as an Augustinian idea, but an idea that is part of human thought, because when asking about the existing goods in the created reality, it is asked also about evil existence

The main goal of this inquiry is to analyze the issue of human condition after the Adamic Fall, according to Blaise Pascal. We have chosen his Lettre that dates from October 17th, 1651, as our main object of analysis. This Lettre is anything but a marginal text within the author s work, representing, on the contrary, the debut of several meditations on themes such as death, compassion, providence, consolation, sacrifice, original sin, self-love, the infinite emptiness, the horror of death before and after the Fall, the love of live before and after the Fall. Our departing hypothesis is that, according to Blaise Pascal, man lives on attempting to deflect the infinite emptiness that dwell in him and fill it somehow, even though only Jesus Christ, as a mediator, is capable of fulfilling the void left by God. To sustain this hypothesis, two major concepts - that of self-love and that of infinite emptiness - present in the foresaid Lettre shall be analyzed throughout the two parts that form this research: A Theory of Original Sin and its Consequences and The Infinite Emptiness of man without God . In Part I, the focus is on the Jansenist spiritual direction of the XVIIth century, and its implications with regards to our object (First chapter). The second chapter focuses on the concepts of Self-Love and Infinite Emptiness, and there we raise the question whether, to Pascal, self-love as detachment from God is the root of all evil and all vices, and whether it is the cause of the infinite emptiness that dwells in man. Apart from Self-Love and Infinite Emptiness, the Lettre also mentions the will to domination and laziness as other consequences of the Adamic Fall. At the end of the first part (Third chapter), we intend to demonstrate the consequences of the Fall as Pascal puts them in the Écrits sur la Grâce: ignorance, concupiscence, guilt and eternal death. Thus, we shall have a more thorough perspective on the consequences of the Fall - something we shall name subjective collage , since we bring the Lettre near to the Écrits sur la Grâce and compose a picture with the consequences of the Fall. In Part II, titled The Infinite Emptiness of man without God , we have elaborated two chapters in order to meditate about human condition based on the concept of infinite emptiness. Chapter IV (the first in Part II) focuses on the relation between infinite emptiness and the Pascalian concept of divertissement; finally, the fifth and last chapter brings the concept of infinite emptiness near to that of Christ as Mediator

The aim of this monographic paper is to reflect upon the problem of evil. For a better understanding of the subject we decided to approach fundamental issues issues such as : what is evil, the reason of evil, its origen and mainly the meaning of evil and its suffering in relation to one s free will. Appealing to specialized bibliography, other concepts are seen essential for the understanding of this subject like: grace, freedom, divine prescience, will, love and so on. Basically all the answers about the issue of evil envolve directly or indirectly a reflection about God, in other words everything about evil envolves human suffering, and one of the strong points regarding modern atheism is why do I suffer? Where is God? Well, looking precisely through this prespective that is, approaching the issue of evil together with the issue of God arises the legitimaly and necessity to conceive and defend a right concept of as being almighty googd and fair

Abstract:
The Christian doctrine of original sin has ever since the Reformation been a central part of Lutheran theological understandings of human beings. Therefore it is of vital importance to see how this doctrine can be understood in a plausible way, with regards to contemporary society, 500 years after Luther is said to have nailed his 95 thesis to the door of the church in Wittenberg. The present study explores what contemporary issues different interpretations of the doctrine must interact with, and suggest a way of evaluating the plausibility and Lutheran identity of such interpretations. Two expositions of the doctrine of original sin published by Lutheran theologians in the 2010s are then evaluated: Utanför paradiset by Eva-Lotta Grantén (ethicist, Uppsala) and In Adam’s Fall by Ian A. McFarland (professor of Divinity, Cambridge). Particularly four aspects of their interpretations are analysed: the relationship to human experience, the integration of contemporary science and culture, the internal coherence and their narrative’s Lutheran authenticity. Even though both interpretations have their flaws, they can largely be seen as both plausible and Lutheran. Grantén gives a wholly existential picture of the original sin, while McFarland tends to see it in ontological terms. In order to avoid the pitfalls in their interpretations, a further developed understanding of the doctrine is proposed, integrating both the ontological and existential aspects.

The doctrine of avoidable loss is a generally recognized principle in Swedish law. The doctrine is often invoked in damage claim disputes of all kinds, and is therefore important in practice. There is plenty of legal literature where the doctrine is treated in the context of sales law and insurance law. On the tort law side, however, there is nothing – this is the first dedicated work on the subject in Sweden. There are many tort cases where the question of avoidable loss is actualized, but due to the way the courts articulate the grounds for their rulings, the cases provide little guidance for the future, and therefore have little value as precedent. This is not necessarily an obstacle to the study. On the contrary, when looking outwards, I have found a wealth of ideas and study material in other areas of civil law, in law and economics, and in foreign law. The structural and methodological framework of the thesis was designed to allow for extraction of material from foreign sources without needing to conduct a thorough (and often uninteresting) comparative study. The main purpose of the investigation was to define the boundaries of the claimant’s liability as imposed by the doctrine. Considering the limited scope of the thesis, it would not have been possible to deconstruct the subject into details and conduct thorough investigations of those. Instead, the work was focused on determining general guidelines, thought patterns and clues; both de lege lata and de lege ferenda. Multiple such guidelines could be defined in various contexts where the doctrine is applied, but also, interestingly, in certain contexts where it is not obvious that considerations of avoidable loss are decisive. Multiple systemic issues have also been found, both in the application of the doctrine and in the underlying norms. I have humbly put forward several suggestions on how these issues could be alleviated to promote legal certainty in the doctrine’s application, both today and in the future.
