Abstract:
If spiritual gifts signify the possibility of new revelation, scripture represents a fixed standard. However, Mormonism’s standard is expansive and open to further development. Mormons read the Bible with a limited literalism but consider it to be missing “plain and precious things” and in need of correction and supplement. Joseph provided a new “translation,” but it was not canonized in whole. The Book of Mormon functions more as a sign of Smith’s authority than as a reservoir of doctrine, though it was important in providing a template for the organization of the church, priesthood, and basic sacraments. The Doctrine and Covenants is a compendium of Smith’s revelations, and though it is open in principle, only a few revelations not of his authorship have been added. And the Pearl of Great Price canonized his visionary experiences and a tremendously important text of purported Mosaic origin, along with a problematic account attributed to Abraham.

Abstract:
This essay will show how Christian doctrine can reinvigorate the theology of sexuality, now dominated by distinctively modern categories (e.g., the appeal to experience). Here traditional doctrines such as those of Scripture, God, Christ, Trinity, liturgy, analogy, and asceticism recover neglected resources for making arguments on topics of sexuality and marriage.

Abstract:
This chapter discusses the epochal shift in scriptural interpretation in the nineteenth century. Applying historical investigation to accounts of divine inspiration and revelation resulted in a call for a radical reconstruction of Christian theology, especially as developed in liberal Protestantism. There were a number of responses to such reconstruction of Christian faith. One option was to resist the logic of liberal Protestantism’s normative apologetic while retaining an existential appropriation of biblical heroes and narratives. A second option was to develop a whole new apologetic for the traditional position on inspiration and inerrancy. A third option was to shore up the appeal to biblical authority by a theory of development culminating in a doctrine of papal infallibility. Fourth, there was the populist option of focusing on personal piety and working from a deflationary soteriological vision of Scripture. All five options, if we include liberal Protestantism, continue to flourish.

Abstract:
Tradition has been expressed as the history of the reception or the effects of the Scriptures. This chapter begins by exploring three examples of this history: the emergence of the creeds which did not replace the Scriptures but shaped the Church’s appropriation of them; the contrast between Adam and Christ as the New Adam or Last Adam (initiated by St Paul and then flourishing in Christian theology and literature); and the doctrine of justification, which centred largely on the interpretation of St Paul, became the heart of the Reformation debates, and has now found a substantial consensus between the churches. At Vatican II, the witness of the Scriptures corrected long-standing but unacceptable traditions involving the denial of religious freedom and sinful anti-Semitism. The example of Christ and his apostles and the teaching of Paul in Romans, respectively, helped to motivate these two reforms.

Abstract:
The Tractarians were deeply committed to Scripture. They insisted that every doctrine had to be proved from the Bible. Writing biblical commentaries were among their main literary projects (this is true even for laywomen such as Christina Rossetti and Charlotte Yonge). In contrast to the surrounding Protestantism, however, the Tractarians denied the right of private judgement, insisting that patristic exegesis should be the authoritative guide. The Tractarians were emphatically opposed to the non-traditional conclusions of modern biblical criticism and unabashedly in favour of retaining allegorical readings. This chapter describes these commitments while also observing how they changed in the second generation of the movement.
