The Crown claimed the prerogative to order the use of, and to alter, Church services in spite of the provisions of any Act of Uniformity, the Canons or any Declaration of Assent. This caused confusion among the clergy and others as to who had ‘lawful authority’ to permit such usages or changes. This confusion was exacerbated by episcopal claims to a jus liturgicum. Writing in 196s, Horton Davies, in his magisterial examination of worship and theology in England, gave a glowing account of advances made in Free Churches over previous decades towards ‘a worship that is deeply reverent, sacramentally rich, ecumenically comprehensive, and theologically faithful’. This study examines the pressure for reformation in worship which emerged, particularly in the 1930s, within English Congregationalism. Pressure came from an exploration of the Reformed and Puritan roots of the denomination and from the influence of wider forms of corporate devotion. By 1943, Nathani

This article is a study of the term ‘ibada (worship) through the prism of Sunni dogma, or rather a study of a criterion or measure, with the help of which it can be determined that some act or mental aspiration of a person is considered to be or not to be a worship from the point of view of Theology. This is important in order to correctly assess a person's actions in the context of monotheism and polytheism. A review of the sources and literature on this topic indicates that Sunni theologians from the time of al-Salaf al-Salih to the present day knew about this criterion, which is the convict

Abstract This paper explores seventeenth-century Scottish theologian Samuel Rutherford’s (1600–1661) views on adiaphora and the regulative principle of worship (RPW). Rutherford criticised those who endorsed the authority of civil magistrates and church government to legislate ecclesiastical laws concerning indifferent matters in worship. Scholars have focussed on the RPW of the Westminster Standards, but the theological and philosophical controversies surrounding the RPW and its relationship with adiaphora in early modern Britain remain understudied. AbstractIn the wake of Europe's religious wars, it became accepted that embassies could include chapels where forms of Christianity illegal in the host country could be practiced. In theory, only ambassadors and their entourage had the right to worship in such chapels, but in practice the latter became bases for full-fledged congregations of native religious dissenters. Constructed out of residential space, the chapels belonged to a broader category of edifice, the "clandestine church." They helped give birth to the modern doctrine of "extraterritoriality."

When we think of how the literature of Classic Tamil came into our hands across the river of time, we are amazed. Before the appearance of the script, Early Tamils would have verbally passed on to others what they had thought. One must have passed through the flood of time spreading from one person to another, from one to another, to another. All the thoughts, songs, and conversations of the people should have been expressed verbally until the palm leaf became available as stationery. AbstractThis article gives an overview of recent findings on the thriving cult of bone relic stūpas in contemporary Jaina culture. Although Jaina doctrine rejects the worship of material objects, fieldwork in India on the hitherto unstudied current Jaina mortuary rituals furnished clear evidence for the ubiquity of bone relic stūpas and relic veneration across the Jaina sectarian spectrum. The article discusses a representative case and assesses the significance of the overall findings for the history of religions. It also offers a new theoretical explanation of the power of relics.
