Abstract:
This chapter shifts the reflections on marginalization and visibility discussed in chapter 3 to Brasilia, the modernist capital that was built from scratch in forty-one months and completed in 1960. Embodying a strategic visuality intent on ordering urban space, Brasilia also produced massive forms of invisibility, as illustrated by the forced relocation of workers to peripheral satellite cities and by the repression of marginal histories—histories that are buried beneath the city’s surface like the bodies of workers who died during its construction. Paying special attention to Vladimir Carvalho and Adirley Queirós, this chapter examines a counter-visual cinema that is dedicated to what is invisible and even non-visual—such as the sounds of the periphery and the voices of workers whose memories contradict the official record.

Abstract:
This chapter considers the challenges faced by documentary filmmakers who have attempted to expose examples of religious fundamentalism as ideological bias. How does one document fundamentalism objectively without also becoming a means for the very spread of the fundamentalist’s message? If documentary filmmakers rely too heavily on their own biases to frame the subject matter, then they risk trading one ideological position for another, as they well know; yet to simply reproduce on-screen the viewpoints of religious fanatics, without commentary or criticism, may result in documentary films that serve the interests of the same subjects they originally intended to expose; documentaries about evangelical Christianity may become just one additional means for evangelizing the “unsaved,” for instance. Turning to examples of fundamentalist documentary—particularly films intent to prove creationism—the chapter explains how evangelical media understands more intimately the creative potential involved in embracing bias as a means to reconstruct common sense on their own terms.

Bicentennial events in Los Angeles spoke to black mayor Tom Bradley’s plan for shaping the city into a business-friendly, multicultural metropolis—a plan that would reach fruition in the next decade. This chapter looks at Wolper Productions’s principal role as architect of a patriotic culture of national commemoration. Without a cinematic record of early American history, the studio turned to “docudrama” as the solution to a narrative problem of documentary historiography. Combining the form and style of period fiction with the truth-telling charge of documentary, docudramas such as Sandburg’s Lincoln (1974) and I Will Fight No More Forever (1975) were a novel kind of prestige programming. Docudrama could command high ratings and claim the pedagogical intent of educating viewers. Wolper Productions made network series and specials on American Indians, African Americans, and eighteenth- and nineteenth-century political leaders, which culminated with the studio’s twelve-part miniseries Roots (1977).

Abstract:
This chapter discusses one of few women documentary filmmakers of the Arctic, Danish Jette Bang. A prolific photographer and filmmaker in Greenland throughout her career, Jørgensen shows how the early color film Inuit (1940) was nimbly shot and cinematographically deliberate. Made for the 1940 International Polar Year, the film and accompanying photo book created substantial media coverage when it premiered in Copenhagen. Bang’s later films, including her depictions of a changing Greenlandic society in the 1950s and 60s, this chapter argues, were made with the intent to both document Greenlandic life in the post-war era and as a testament to Denmark’s benevolent colonial rule of Greenland. Bang’s films thereby showcase the welfare state and industrial modernization processes imported Greenland, while maintaining an interest in ‘traditional’ practices and customs.

Abstract:
This chapter investigates the curious absence of erotic content in Basque cinema (Julio Medem’s feature films are the obvious exception), an absence that, the author argues, extends well into the democratic period and therefore cannot be blamed on censorship or catholic repression. This research shows that the explicit content of Basque films often revolves around contexts of torture, revealing a certain fascination with masochist narratives that could be suggestive of nationalist martyrdom. This is explored in his Deleuzian analysis of his two main case studies, Estado de excepción/State of Emergency (dir. Iñaki Núñez, 1977) and Akelarre/Witches’ Sabbath (dir. Pedro Olea, 1984), and of a segment of Medem’s documentary La pelota vasca: la piel contra la piedra/The Basque Ball: Skin Against Stone (2003) among many other examples throughout the history of Basque cinema. This noticeable absence of erotic narratives could be part of a revolutionary intent to distance Basque cinema both from the erotic narratives of the Barcelona School and from the destape films associated with Madrid, but also a nationalist commitment to sacrifice individualistic desires and pleasures at the service of more collective aims.

Abstract:
The proliferation of screen media and the saturation of everyday life with digital culture led to dramatic shifts in public communication, challenging our sense of what it means to be a citizen in the 21st century. Digital technologies have expanded the capacity to author and circulate information in unforeseeable ways. Cell phone video recordings became evidence of an unprovoked police attack, leaving traditional news outlets with little original content. Shifts in online engagement and mobile recording patterns at the turn of the century have enabled people who exist outside of business, state, and mainstream media sectors to create visible documentary moving image discourse that circumvent traditional media content. The standardization of the internet at the turn of the century brought people together in new ways, paving the way for social media and newly formed social networks. Visibility through digital production, online self-publishing, and circulation through social networks offer more than the opportunity to gather an audience; these forms of communication consistently disrupt, contribute, penetrate, challenge, focus, and reframe important public conversations in our culture. This chapter focuses on accidental witnessing of racial struggle and representation of police brutality in documentary history. This chapter has implications for what bodies get to move freely through a documentary commons and what bodies do not.

Abstract:
This chapter considers the representation of the straight girl and the queer guy within varying documentary media forms, considering the notions of social agency and performativity. Foregrounding both documentary theory and performance studies, the documentary biographical film drama Carrington (Christopher Hampton 1995, UK), offers a historical precedent in the representation of the straight girl and queer guy, all the while foregrounding notions of devotion and intensity. The context of the social actor is further examined in more recent documentary case studies such as Fag Hags: Women Who Love Gay Men (Justine Pimlott 2005, Canada), My Husband Is Gay (Benetta Adamson 2005, UK) and My Husband Is Not Gay (TLC 2015, US), framing the intense relationships between straight girls and queer guys – in many instances relating legal marriages and questioning issues of fidelity. Also the performative potential of reality television is explored in Would Like to Meet (BBC 2001, UK), Boy Meets Boy (Bravo 2003, US) and Queer Eye for the Straight Guy (Bravo 2003–7, US), through examining the confines and opportunity of television formats.

Abstract:
This chapter focuses on online documentary practices. It attempts to puts in perspective the uses generated by the independent Chinese documentary movement from the dawn of Internet film forums in the mid-1990s to the microblogs in the late 2000s. Two decades of online practices in this small film milieu reflect the evolution of both web-based platforms and Chinese independent documentary filmmakers. Using detailed examples, it shows that their unofficial cinephilia, emerging from piracy practices, quickly moved towards exchanges reflecting the filmmakers' concerns for recognition of their works and, beyond that, for the sensitive sociopolitical issues dealt with in their films. The popular practice of online document sharing completes and extends their film practices and creates a wider network ranging from film enthusiasts to activists.

This chapter focuses on Tang Tang (Zhang Hanzi, 2004) and Mei Mei (Gao Tian, 2005), two Chinese documentaries. Although each documentary centers around a female impersonator, they approach their subjects in distinct ways. While Mei Mei portrays its subject with nuance and intense emotional investment, Tang Tang emphasizes formal experimentation. Positioning Tang Tang at the intersection of what I call the film’s “performing documentary” and the subject’s “performance of gender,” I argue that the reflexivity permeating Tang Tang foregrounds the openness of the queer subjectivities it portrays. My investigation further addresses each film’s subjects as human beings materialized in and through a matrix of social, political, and economic conditions marked by spatial and temporal parameters.

Modernism and The Poetics of Sameness and Presence”. The author argues that through a paradigm shift from post-modernism towards what she proposes to refer to as meta-modernism, a new kind of poetic comes to the fore in which senses of ‘sameness’ and ‘presence’ and a drive towards inter-subjective connection and dialogue are pivotal. At the same time a turn to the subject, the real and the private, are the preferred strategies to address the central topics in contemporary culture; that of (often traumatic) memory and identity. The re-evaluation of the subject as an active, embodied and emotional individual is fundamental to such a shift.
