Abstract:

Perhaps the most basic tension in any theatrical performance is that of the actual and the fictive. There is always a doubling of performer (actor-character), time (now-then), and place (here-there) in theatrical representation. Performance theorists such as Fischer-Lichte, Boal, George, Schechner, and Turner all argue that between the poles of actual and fictive, between that which is materially present and that which is absent and referenced, lies the liminal state. The liminal state is a self-referential state that collapses binaries of here-and-there, now-and-then, and subject-and-object.

Uncertainty is a documentary film about belief systems that human animals use to navigate the unknown and assign meaning to experiences. It acknowledges that we exist amidst the parameters of our own perceptual constructs. Our frameworks for navigation often range in degrees of openness to the unknown and to outside scrutiny. The aim of this study is to demonstrate how the publication of books in Swedish about Native Americans for children and young people developed and changed between 1890 and 2008. Translations into Swedish of such books from 1860 onwards are commented on. The terms "Native American", "Indian" and "Indigenous" are discussed. This thesis confronts how, in Vincent Moon’s films, experience takes the spotlight in detriment of signification. I formulate that the director, rather than worrying about imbuing his films with an inherited sense, is instead searching that his work may express something unique each time it is encountered. To achieve this, his artistic practice is submitted through a set of procedures that are more in line with the field of sound than that of cinema.
