Abstract:
Animal bites, especially bites to the head, neck and face, are common injuries in children.1 It is estimated that in the pediatric population dog bites account for 0.3% to 1.5% of all presentations for medical care.1 Children are most likely to be bitten by a familiar dog at home and are frequently bitten due to a provoked attack.1-3 Appropriate adult supervision could prevent many of these bites from occurring.

Abstract:
Biopolitics, traditionally understood as management of the human population, has been extended to include nonhuman animal life and posthuman life. In this article, we turn to literatures that advance Foucauldian biopolitics to explore the mode of government enabled by the dog of the US presidential family – the First Dog called Bo Obama. With analytical focus on vitalisation efforts, we follow the construction of Bo in various outlets, such as the websites of the White House and an animal rights organisation. Bo’s microphysical escapades and the negotiation thereof show how contemporary biopolitics, which targets the vitality of the dog population, is linked to seductive neoliberal management techniques and subjectivities. We discuss ‘cuddly management’ in relation to Foucauldian scholarship within organisation and management studies and propose that the construction of Bo facilitates interspecies family norms and an empathic embrace of difference circumscribed by vitalisation efforts that we pinpoint as ‘doggy-biopolitics’.

Abstract:
Purpose. To determine the mechanisms predisposing penile fracture as well as the rate of long-term penile deformity and erectile and voiding functions.Methods.All fractures were repaired on an emergency basis via subcoronal incision and absorbable suture with simultaneous repair of eventual urethral lesion. Patients’ status before fracture and voiding and erectile functions at long term were assessed by periodic follow-up and phone call. Detailed history included cause, symptoms, and single-question self-report of erectile and voiding functions.Results.Among the 44 suspicious cases, 42 (95.4%) were confirmed, mean age was 34.5 years (range: 18–60), mean follow-up 59.3 months (range 9–155). Half presented the classical triad of audible crack, detumescence, and pain. Heterosexual intercourse was the most common cause (28 patients, 66.7%), followed by penile manipulation (6 patients, 14.3%), and homosexual intercourse (4 patients, 9.5%). “Woman on top” was the most common heterosexual position (n=14, 50%), followed by “doggy style” (n=8, 28.6%). Four patients (9.5%) maintained the cause unclear. Six (14.3%) patients had urethral injury and two (4.8%) had erectile dysfunction, treated by penile prosthesis and PDE-5i. No patient showed urethral fistula, voiding deterioration, penile nodule/curve or pain.Conclusions.“Woman on top” was the potentially riskiest sexual position (50%). Immediate surgical treatment warrants long-term very low morbidity.

Abstract:
There is a rare slangy British English phrase to lie doggo “to lie hid”. The earliest known example is dated in the OED to 1882. Doggo looks like dog + o (with -o, as in weirdo, typo, and so forth), but a formation consisting of an animal name followed by the suffix -o would have no analogs. Some light on the origin of lie doggo may fall from the Modern Icelandic idiom sitja upp við dogg ‘to sit or half-lie, supporting oneself with elbows’. Doggur, known from texts since the eighteenth century, occurs with several other verbs. Also, sitja eins og doggur ‘sit motionless, look distraught’ and vera eins og doggur ‘to be motionless’ exist. Doggur has nothing to do with dogs, because the Scandinavian word for “dog” is hund-. The origin of the English noun dog is obscure, but, contrary to the almost universal opinion, the word is not totally isolated. In some German dialects, the diminutive forms dodel, döggel, and the similar-sounding tiggel ~ teckel occur. Perhaps dog and its continental look-alikes were originally baby words. The same sound complexes as above sometimes mean ‘a cylindrical object’ (such are Icelandic doggur and Middle High German tocke). Two of the basic meanings of those words were probably ‘round stick; doll’. Although the evidence is late, we can risk suggesting that lie doggo also contains the name of some device that was current not too long ago in the European itinerant handymen’s lingua franca. The overall image looks nearly the same as in the phrase dead as a doornail. In English, folk etymology connected doggo with the animal name and misled even professional lexicographers and etymologists. Finally, of some relevance is the English idiom it rains cats and dogs, whose forgotten earliest form was it rains cats and dogs and pitchforks with their points downwards. Apparently, the original idea was that a downpour of sharp objects fell to the ground.

Abstract:
Foodservice is estimated to produce 12% of the total food waste in Europe, and it is a major target for policies against food waste. The amount of food lost during foodservice operations has been assessed in the literature as a figure ranging from 10% to 41% of the quantity prepared in the kitchen, either as non-served food or as plate waste. In this paper, a systematization of the current initiatives against food waste in EU school foodservice is provided. This background is used as a base to discuss the results of a direct assessment of food waste conducted in 78 primary schools in Italy, where 28.6% of the food prepared was not consumed by the diners. Part of it was saved for reuse, while the rest was disposed and treated as organic waste or, to a lesser extent, as unsorted waste. The flows of food waste, represented by a Sankey diagram, show that some actions may be implemented in order to save more food from disposal; for example, implementing donation programmes for non-served food or using doggy bags to avoid the disposal of plate waste. A greater effort shall be put on preventive actions, aimed at avoiding the generation of food waste; in this sense regular monitoring at schools may act as a first preventive measure as it can increase the awareness of students, teachers and foodservice staff over the issue of food waste.

Abstract:
Purpose Halving food waste has been included within the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals. Food wasted out-of-home is the second source of food waste. However, the majority of the studies have focused on home generated food waste, and still little is known about out-of-home food waste and how it is managed by food service companies. The purpose of this paper is to adopt a double perspective in analyzing food waste generated at a food service level, by focusing on both the client and business perspective. Design/methodology/approach First, from the client perspective, the authors aim at analyzing consumer out-of-home habits, self-reported waste quantification, and doggy bag usage by reporting the results of an exploratory survey which involved 411 individuals living in central Italy. Second, from a business perspective, the authors analyzed an award-winning practice that manages out-of-home food waste in Italy by combining food surplus management and digital solutions with a profitable business model innovation. Findings Results obtained from the two perspectives of analysis support the need of business investments in innovations and digital solutions, in order to meet client needs and behavior, thus contributing to better manage and reduce food surplus and waste. Practical implications This study will raise practitioners’ knowledge on the advantages of digital solution in food surplus management, along with a better comprehension on food waste behavior from the client perspective. Originality/value This is the first study that analyses out-of-home waste from both the client and business perspective, emphasizing how digital solutions can help in reducing the phenomenon.

Full text
Abstract:
Objective This study assessed primary urethral reconstruction results in patients with a penile fracture. Materials and methods Between January 2005 and April 2016, patients who underwent primary urethral reconstruction due to penile fracture were called for a follow-up. Epidemiological and clinical presentation data and operative findings were reviewed retrospectively. Partial urethral lesions were primarily treated with interrupted absorbable sutures over urethral catheter. In cases of complete urethral lesion, tension-free end-to-end anastomosis was performed. From the third month after surgery, all patients were interviewed using the International Prostate Symptom Score questionnaire and uroflowmetry. Retrograde urethrocystography was used in patients with urinary symptoms or altered uroflowmetry to rule out or confirm urethral stenosis. Results Of 175 patients with penile fractures, 27 (15.4%) had associated urethral injury. All patients were diagnosed with penile fracture by means of clinical history and physical examination. No subsequent examinations were conducted. Ages varied from 30 years to 58 years old (mean 39.2 years). All fractures resulted from sexual activity. Reported sexual positions were ‘doggy style’ position in eight cases (61.5%) and with the ‘man on top’ in five cases (38.4%). Ten patients (76.9%) experienced haematuria, ten (76.9%) had urethral bleeding and four (30.7%) suffered urinary retention. Unilateral and bilateral injury of the corpus cavernosum was observed in four (30.7%) and nine (69.2%) patients, respectively; partial injury was found in nine cases (69.3%) and complete urethral injury was noticed in four cases (30.7%). All cases of complete urethral injury were associated with bilateral lesion of the corpus cavernosum. Six patients who had uroflowmetry with maximum urinary flow rate below 15 ml/s and/or had IPSS above 7 underwent retrograde urethrocystogram, and this was normal in all cases, excluding the possibility of urethral stenosis. Two patients (15.3%) experienced surgical postoperative complications represented by an urethrocutaneous fistula and a subcutaneous abscess adjacent to the end-to-end anastomosis area. Conclusions Penile fracture is a rare urological emergency, especially when it is associated with a urethral lesion. This must be suspected when the clinical picture is suggestive or in cases of high-energy trauma, especially in bilateral lesions of the corpus cavernosum. Complementary imaging methods are not needed in these cases and immediate exploration should not be delayed. Primary urethroplasty produces satisfactory results with low complication levels. Nonetheless, prospective studies with larger samples should be conducted.

Abstract:
Patients are often ill‐equipped to know which speciality to choose for their health problem. Especially in the presence of non‐specific symptoms, choosing the right specialist might not be so obvious. In such cases, misdirected self‐referrals by patients to self‐chosen specialists can sometimes lead to misdiagnosis resulting in unwarranted delays in getting the right treatment. The general physicians, on the other hand, are in a unique position to oversee the big picture of patients’ health, and are therefore better equipped to identify and sort out their individual health problems. Hence instead of a specialist if the first place of contact for patients is a general physician, they are likely to be guided along the right path of treatment for their various health problems. Such a system will minimize errors on the part of the patients by making certain that they are referred to the appropriate specialists.
