Abstract:
Using the 400th anniversary of the King James Bible as a test case, this article illustrates some of the important ways in which the Bible is understood and consumed and how it has continued to survive in an age of neoliberalism and postmodernity. It is clear that instant recognition of the Bible-as-artefact, multiple repackaging and pithy biblical phrases, combined with a popular nationalism, provide distinctive strands of this understanding and survival. It is also clear that the KJV is seen as a key part of a proud English cultural heritage and tied in with traditions of democracy and tolerance, despite having next to nothing to do with either. Anything potentially problematic for Western liberal discourse (e.g. calling outsiders “dogs,” smashing babies heads against rocks, Hades-fire for the rich, killing heretics, using the Bible to convert and colonize, etc.) is effectively removed, or even encouraged to be removed, from such discussions of the KJV and the Bible in the public arena. In other words, this is a decaffeinated Bible that has been colonized by, and has adapted to, Western liberal capitalism.

AbstractAn illustration at the beginning of Deuteronomium 18 in the French bible published at Atwerp by Martinus de Keyser in 1530 shows the burning of a book in the background. This picture has been interpretated as an expression of the propagandistic value which catholic imagery acquired with the growth of the Reformation. The illustration, however, has its forerunners in earlier bible illustrations, the earliest of which appeared in 1490. Moreover, the editions in which the woodcut appeared cannot be regarded as catholic bibles. Though they were at the time presented as based on the Vulgata, they were placed on the Louvain Index in 1546. Furthermore, the subject depicted does not deal with the burning of religious books; Deuteronomium 18:10-11 contains a prohibition against sorcery, and the book shown in the woodcut

Abstract:
This paper studies on Rashīd Riḍā’s view on isrāiliyyāt and the Bible in his tafsir al-Manār. As a reformer in the field of exegesis, Riḍā found urgent necessity in returning al-Qur’an to its original purpose which is to give guidance. The problem is that Riḍā saw many authors of exegesis work (mufassir) before him give profuse and unnecessary exegetical discussion. To Riḍā, displaying this kind of lavish information diverts from the original vision of al-Qur’an and cannot be tolerated. In this case, Riḍā resolutely opposes the quotation of isrāiliyyāt. Interestingly, behind this stance, Riḍā quotes the Bible in his work. This becomes the main focus of this study; how Riḍā views isrāiliyyāt and the Bible, what is the essential difference between the two according to Riḍā, and what is the reason behind his quotation of the bible and his opposition against isrāiliyyāt?. To analyze this topic, descriptive-analytical method is used. The result is, it is found that according to Riḍā, isrāiliyyāt are just unfounded stories and not worth quoting. While the Bible in Riḍā’s view is a holy book containing the New and Old Testament the truth of which is believed by the People of the Book themselves. In this case, Riḍā believes that the source worth quoting is only one which is ṣaḥīḥ and marfū’ from the Prophet. Whenever it has to be from the People of the Book, one should quote from the Bible even though Riḍā himself realizes that there are many oddities in it. There are several reasons behind Riḍā’s quoting the Bible (1) Bible is still sourced to the books of Ahl al-Kitab. (2) Bible becomes the guidance of Ahl al-Kitab. (3) Bible can be accounted for according to the Bible.(4) Bible does not have negative motives toward Islam. Key words: Rashīd Riḍā, Tafsir al-Manār, isrāiliyyāt, the Bible

Abstract:
In the Hebrew and Greek Bibles, various kinds of passive forms are used in sentence constructions. Some have both the patients and the agents clearly specified; others have only patients. Frequently, the agent is implied, ambiguous, or even unknown. The Gun language (a language of Benin) does not have forms for passive construction; only active forms are used. In Rev 13.5, 7, 14 the unspecified agent has been identified in the 2003 Gun New Testament as the “dragon.” This paper argues that the identification of the agent should be revisited before the publication of the whole Bible. It discusses various ways passive constructions can be dealt with in translation. Contrary to the choice of identified agent in the 2003 Gun New Testament, this article supports an alternative position, one which was adopted in the 1923 Gun Bible: that is, to use an ambiguous agent in the form of the impersonal pronoun ye, translated as “one,” “someone,” “it,” “they,” and so forth.

Coetzee, Narelle Jane. "Wild God in the wilderness : why does Yahweh choose to appear in the wilderness in the book of Exodus?" Thesis, University of Birmingham, 2016. http://etheses.bham.ac.uk//id/eprint/7115/.

Full text
Abstract:
The wilderness is an unlikely place for Yahweh to appear; yet some of the most profound encounters between Yahweh and ancient Israel occur in this isolated, barren, arid and marginal landscape. Thus, via John A. Beck's narrative-geography method, which prioritises the role of the geographical setting of the biblical narrative, the question of 'why does Yahweh choose to appear in the wilderness?' is examined in reference to four Exodus theophanic passages (Exodus 3:1-4:17, 19:1-20:21, 24:9-18 and 33: 18-34). First, a biblical working definition of the wilderness is developed, and the specific geographic elements in each passage discussed. Subsequently, the characterisation of Yahweh's appearances is investigated, via the signs Yahweh used to appear, the words Yahweh speaks and the human experience of Yahweh in the wilderness space. In sum, five reasons for why Yahweh appears in the wilderness were considered significant. The wilderness setting allows Yahweh to be (I) actively present and intimately engaged, (2) separate and holy, (3) paradoxically creative, (4) speak transfomative and visionary words and (5) free, risky, and provoking. Finally, the implications of these findings provide new insights to theological considerations of Yahweh. Overall, Yahweh is portrayed as a wild God in the wilderness.

Abstract:
Dissertação de Mestrado Integrado em Medicina Veterinária
Primary extrahepatic biliary tract disorders are uncommon in small animal patients. Their recognition is challenging, as clinical signs are seldom specific for that system. However, while in early stages they may present as benign incidental findings, over time they can progress to severe life-threatening conditions. A delay in diagnosis and treatment is directly related to a poor prognosis. A retrospective case study was conducted in 26 dogs and 1 cat surgically treated for bile peritonitis. Information regarding signalment; clinical, laboratory, imaging, and surgical findings; bacterial culture results; histopathology; and outcome was registered based on medical records. Results showed that necrotizing cholecystitis (52.9%), followed by gallbladder mucocele (35.3%), were the more prevalent causes of biliary tract rupture in dogs. Cholecystitis was associated with bacterial infection and with cholelithiasis in 87.5% and 66.7% of cases, respectively. Mortality rate was 11.5% and no predictors for survival were found. Bile peritonitis in cats was exceedingly rare, as demonstrated by the one case found in a 6-year period, which was presented as a case report. Bile peritonitis can be life threatening, but when aggressively treated the prognosis can be favourable. Efforts should be made to recognize the underlying disorders before progression to biliary tract rupture.

Abstract:
Dogs are popular pets in many countries. The interactions that occur between dogs, and between dogs and humans, are of interest to behavioural, welfare, psychological and social sciences. As dogs are a potential source of zoonotic infections to humans, such interactions may also impact on public health. Interactions between dogs, for example whilst walking, may also transfer infectious diseases (zoonotic or non-zoonotic) through the pet dog population. Despite their popularity as pets, there have been no in-depth studies into the contacts that occur between dogs, and between dogs and people; this thesis uses a variety of methodologies to examine these contacts. A census-based, epidemiological study was used to investigate factors associated with dog ownership and contact with dogs, in a semi-rural community of 1278 households in Cheshire, UK. This study supported the suggestion that dogs are more common in families who have older children (6-19 years), as has been generally observed in other countries. Dog owners were also more likely to have contact with dogs other than their own, compared with those not owning a dog. A questionnaire survey of 260 dog owning households in this community found that the contacts that these dogs have, with people and other dogs, were highly variable and affected by: size, gender and age of dog; individual dog behaviours; human behaviours and human preferences in management of the dog. A number of situations were identified that may be of particular importance in relation to zoonoses, including: sleeping areas, playing behaviours, greeting behaviours, food sources, walking, disposal of faeces, veterinary preventive treatment and general hygiene. Faecal samples were provided for 183 of the dogs and forty-six (25%) were identified, by either culture or direct PCR isolation methods, as carriers of the zoonotic pathogen Campylobacter upsaliensis. Multivariable logistic regression identified risk factors for C. upsaliensis carriage as: living with another positive dog; living in a household with pet fish; size of dog; age of dog; being fed commercially-bought dog treats; and being fed human food tit-bits (particularly the act of feeding leftovers in the bowl, although letting the dog feed directly from a plate had a protective effect). These results have implications for prevention of C. upsaliensis carriage in pet dogs and the subsequent possible transmission to people. Social network analytical approaches were used to investigate potential networks arising amongst 214 of the dog owning households, through their utilisation of public space during walking. A high level of potential contact was demonstrated and this has implications for infectious disease transmission. Most households walked their dogs in only a few areas, but a small number visited many areas. In addition, behavioural observational studies of focal dogs were used to investigate the interactions with other dogs, people and the environment that may occur on dog walks. Dogs were observed to interact with other dogs much more commonly than with people. A multivariable model of percentage duration spent sniffing suggested that day of observation, UK Kennel Club Breed Type and observing urination were important. Whether a dog is on lead or not whilst on a walk: could affect the frequency in which it interacts with other dogs and people that it meets. An experimental study of ten dogs was conducted and hierarchical multilevel modelling suggested that lead status of both dogs in an interaction is important in influencing whether or not the interaction will occur; therefore if used as an intervention for reducing disease spread, both dogs should be on a lead. The work in this thesis provides new insight into the dog-human. relationship and presents information of use to those interested in reducing infectious disease transmission between dogs, and between dogs and people.

This work deals with the influence of the Old Testament prophetism on the actions and words of Jesus, as he is presented by the synoptic Gospels. The present research intends to demonstrate that in the presentation of the life and teaching of Jesus portrayed by the synoptics, the Nazarene partially breaks with most of the religious movements of his time and reclaims ancient prophetic traditions available to him in the TaNaK. Initially, a bibliographical research shall undertake a biblicotheological revision, aiming at understanding Israelite prophetism as presented in the Hebrew Bible. Then, a bibliographical and exegetical study will be done in the principal synoptic texts which present Jesus‟ prophetic praxis. The investigation shall focus on the image of Jesus as seen in the synoptic gospels, in their canonical form. In the final stage, the data of both researches will be analyzed and compared with each other. The common points observed between Old Testament prophetism and Jesus‟ praxis shall be carefully analyzed, in order to establish possible influences. The research‟s final report is made up of three parts: First, according to the synoptic presentation, it becomes clear that Jesus saw himself as a prophet of God, an impression shared by those who knew him; second, so as to understand better this influence, a further investigation of Israelite prophetism is done, as this tradition is presented in the Hebrew Bible; third, an investigation is undertaken of both the deeds and the preaching of Jesus, identifying possible influences that Old Testament prophetism might have exerted upon his actions and words. Finally, this work deals with the implications of prophetic influence on the praxis represented by Jesus.

Abstract:
The following dissertation focuses on the analysis and comparison of Milton Hatoums novel Dois Irmãos (The Brothers, 2006) and the biblical narrative of the fraternal clashes in the book of Genesis, especially that of the twins Jacob and Esau. The conflict-ridden relationship between brothers is a constant leitmotiv, a point of interest that develops in different ways throughout the first book of the Hebrew Bible. Hatoum seeks the biblical narrative matrix for Western thought and Humanitys cultural memory through the impulse of his theme, therefore he does not set out from the Bible. How then, does the Brazilian author progress through his novel, whose fulcrum is the clash between brothers in respect to their primogeniture, which brings us back to the generative biblical text of Genesis to baste his fiction? Our journey in search of this answer is brightened by a fumbling and stumbling path. As in a folkloric dance, narrator and protagonists spiral, trade places and take turns in the roles of Esau, Jacob, Cain, Abel, and Joseph. Our research will approximate these narratives either through similarities or through the estrangement from the Hatounian novel. We will seek the vestiges from the biblical narrative present in the Brazilian authors work following the trails of Omar, Yaqub, and especially the narrator, Nael. An interspersed narrator, half Indian, half Arab; bastard son, progeny of one of the novels twins and a young Indian girl, the Lebanese family\'s maid. Led by Nael\'s narrative, we will constantly flirt with the eyes of memory. Nael leads us to a surprising discovery: it is he who brings into focus the national scope in our research and, as a descendant to the indigenous Amazonian peoples, he reveals himself as the most legitimate heir to all mythological ancestrality born from folktales and myths of rival twins narratives that are as ancient if not more than the Bible. So, to a certain extent, Nael steals the light originally shined upon the twins Omar and Yaqub for himself and embraces the primogeniture, while the power and name are at stake, be it from the familys patriarch, or the original myth.

Abstract:
Aim/Purpose: To engage the reader to think more deeply about lying in the context to a discussion of fake news. Background: Many have read the scriptures holy to Christians; this discussion leads to questions about why even characters within tell things that are not true. Findings: The Hebrew and Greek Bibles are filled with instances where the characters, even G-d, appears to have lied, and commentators have drawn wisdom from these. Recommendations for Researchers: When noting fake news, ask why the news with its falsehoods are present-ed. That is, determine if the news is an eisegesis or an exegeses.
