Lambert, Véronique. The Adornes Domain and the Jerusalem Chapel in Bruges. Translated by Ian Connerty. NL Amsterdam: Amsterdam University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.5117/9789462989924.

Full text
Abstract:
Bruges, middle of the 15th century. Anselm Adornes, scion of a rich patrician family, creates a magnificent domain in the heart of the city : an elegant mansion, beautiful gardens, several charitable almshouses and the spectacular Chapel of Jerusalem. It is a place that every right-minded resident of Bruges and every tourist must see. The history of the Adornes domain is truly remarkable, remaining in the unbroken possession of the same family for six centuries. It has survived storms and setbacks, the secularism of the French Revolution, the fury of two world wars and inevitable periods of disinterest. 'In this book Véronique Lambert allows us to share in the hopes and fears, joys and sorrows, trials and tribulations that mark the milestones in the Adornes family saga. Within the boundaries of historical interpretation and based on extensive research, she unfolds a fascinating tale of ambitious adventurers, charismatic personalities, flamboyant lords and ordinary mortals, but each imbued with the family's traditional willpower and energy'. Let yourself be enchanted by this fascinating piece of our cultural heritage, which deserves to be more widely known.

Villepastour, Amanda. Amelia Pedroso. University of Illinois Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.5406/illinois/9780252037245.003.0003.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter studies the life of Amelia Pedroso, a renowned Cuban ritual singer and priestess in the Santeria tradition. She generated remarkable achievements in male-dominated and heterosexual contexts, openly creating a lesbian and gay-friendly ritual house in Havana. In the early 1990s when she was in her forties, Amelia moved into a drumming domain that specifically prohibited Cuban women—although paradoxically, non-Cuban women were taught in Cuba. She formed an all-women ensemble and toured and ran workshops in the United States and Europe. Amelia attracted women to her, acquiring a role as an iconic activist, developing a network of students and religious godchildren, and leaving a remarkable transnational legacy following her death in 2000.

Abstract:
This chapter describes the decision of Edna's mother to move to Philadelphia to support her daughter's new career. She rented a small townhouse at 1910 Panama Street for the two of them and her youngest daughter, Peggy, who was attending Beaver College (known today as Arcadia University), just northwest of Philadelphia in the suburb of Glenside. The chapter also details Edna's first rehearsal with the orchestra on September 29, 1930. She knew that she might face resistance from some of the men of the orchestra, but the wave of hostility that came at her was a shock. It was so palpable it felt like a slap. Later she discovered that the men were angry about more than just the fact that a woman had invaded their private domain. They were also upset that Vincent Fanelli had been replaced so precipitously after he developed a problem in his right hand.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter deals with the life and career of Zainab Herawi. She began her singing career as a child apprentice in the Herat region of Afghanistan in the 1940s, within the context of a class-based society, where singing by women was considered to be morally questionable. Zainab's is a story of unfulfilled fame because, although she was invited to sing for Kabul Radio when twenty-seven, family and background pressures and constraints led to her returning home, where she continued to sing for wedding celebrations. As a series of choices and struggles involving the interfacing domains of family, location, religion, and vocality, her life as a local singer with a large family was one of frequent anguish and frustration; yet her songs live on in the narratives and performances of musician and scholar Veronica Doubleday.

Schofield, Paul. Duty to Self. Oxford University Press, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780190941758.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
Duty to self has not been taken seriously by contemporary moral and political philosophers, with many even denying the coherence of the notion. Morality and politics concern treatment of others, according to common understanding, and so the very idea of a duty to oneself is thought to be mistaken. Against this, this book aims to vindicate the idea of duties owed by a person to herself, within both the moral and the political domains. Temporal divisions within a life, as well as between practical identities, enable an individual to relate to herself second-personally as she would to another, and thus to owe herself obligations. This book argues that such duties have implications for ethics, practical reasoning, and moral psychology. It also advances a new justification for paternalistic laws, which appeals to the notion of political self-duty.

Nolfi, Kate. Why Only Evidential Considerations Can Justify Belief. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198758709.003.0010.

Full text
Abstract:
At least when we restrict our attention to the epistemic domain, it seems clear that only considerations which bear on whether p can render a subject’s belief that p epistemically justified, by constituting the reasons on the basis of which she believes that p. And we ought to expect any account of epistemic normativity to explain why this is so. Extant accounts generally appeal to the idea that belief aims at truth, in an effort to explain why there is a kind of evidential constraint on the sorts of considerations that can be epistemic reasons. However, there are grounds for doubting that belief, in fact, aims at truth in the way that these accounts propose. This chapter develops an alternative explanation of why it is that non-evidential considerations cannot be epistemic reasons by taking seriously the idea that the constitutive aim of belief is fundamentally action-oriented.

Full text
Abstract:
In this article the central philosophical issues concerning human-level artificial intelligence (AI) are presented. AI largely changed direction in the 1980s and 1990s, concentrating on building domain-specific systems and on sub-goals such as self-organization, self-repair, and reliability. Computer scientists aimed to construct intelligence amplifiers for human beings, rather than imitation humans. Turing based his test on a computer-imitates-human game, describing three versions of this game in 1948, 1950, and 1952. The famous version appears in a 1950 article inMind, ‘Computing Machinery and Intelligence’ (Turing 1950). The interpretation of Turing's test is that it provides an operational definition of intelligence (or thinking) in machines, in terms of behavior. ‘Intelligent Machinery’ sets out the thesis that whether an entity is intelligent is determined in part by our responses to the entity's behavior. Wittgenstein frequently employed the idea of a human being acting like a reliable machine. A ‘living reading-machine’ is a human being or other creature that is given written signs, for example Chinese characters, arithmetical symbols, logical symbols, or musical notation, and who produces text spoken aloud, solutions to arithmetical problems, and proofs of logical theorems. Wittgenstein mentions that an entity that manipulates symbols genuinely reads only if he or she has a particular history, involving learning and training, and participates in a social environment that includes normative constraints and further uses of the symbols.

Baker, James G., Sarah E. Baker, and Steven M. Strakowski, eds. Public and Community Psychiatry. Oxford University Press, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/med/9780190907914.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
Physicians who choose to serve in public sector mental healthcare settings and physicians-in-training assigned to public sector mental health clinics may not be fully prepared for the many roles of the public and community psychiatrist. This primer offers practical information and guidance to the psychiatrist called upon to serve in the roles of public-sector clinician, team member, advocate, administrator, and academician. Each chapter includes a concise description of these various roles and responsibilities and offers engaging examples of the public psychiatrist at work. The chapters also ask readers to thoughtfully consider case-based problems typical of those faced by the public psychiatrist. Each chapter also features works of art and literature, usually from the public domain. Medical humanities help physicians keep sight of the lived experiences of public-sector patients; this includes not only the pain and suffering endured by them due to both the medical disorders with which they live and the disparities they endure in health, educational and occupational outcomes, but also their resilience while facing so many challenges. Medical humanities also serve to reinforce the physician’s individual and collective will to address the disparities endured by our patients. There are several very comprehensive textbooks available that examine community psychiatry broadly. By contrast, this work is a concise guide for the resident and early-career psychiatrist to the many roles he or she might be asked to provide in a public-sector mental health setting. Our hope is that the primer provides a level of support to psychiatrists that fosters their desire, individually and collectively, to serve the poor and the marginalized with grit and determination, and to broadly consider their potential to improve not only patient well-being but also these patients’ incorporation into their communities.
