Sprunt, Eve. A Guide for Dual-Career Couples. ABC-CLIO, LLC, 2016. http://dx.doi.org/10.5040/9798400659942.

Full text
Abstract:
This book discusses the major challenges facing dual-career couples a substantial proportion of modern society and suggests ways for both individuals to achieve career success by re-evaluating traditional styles of working and focusing on productivity, flexibility, and negotiating win-win solutions. Women are becoming increasingly influential in the workforce; the era of men being the primary or only income-earner in a partnership is all but gone. Today, people tend to meet their spouse or domestic partner at school or at work. High achievers tend to pair with other high achievers, often in similar fields. This leads to couples in which both individuals are strongly motivated to have successful careers. What happens when they become parents or when one or both individuals need to consider relocating for their job? Many mid-career, college-educated people, especially women as well as undergraduate and graduate students, are concerned about developing a plan to mesh their career with a partner and are seeking guidance. This book offers a gender-neutral guide for 21st-century couples that will benefit men as much as women. The author provides career-management guidance for people in dual-career relationships in which both parties are ambitiously attempting to pursue equally important, high-powered careers, presenting examples of alternative solutions and arguing that many "women's issues" including parenting and limited geographic mobility are more appropriately managed in a gender-neutral way as dual-career couple issues. Readers will understand how to make better decisions regarding difficult situations, such as whether to accept an opportunity that adversely impacts their personal lives, choosing to take a leave of absence or to quit, investing a large amount of one person's salary for domestic assistance and childcare, taking paternity leave, and leveraging flexible work arrangements for example, telecommuting.

Mark, Mangan, Reed Lucy, and Choong John. A Guide to the SIAC Arbitration Rules. Oxford University Press, 2014. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/law/9780199657216.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
This book provides a rule-by-rule examination of the inception, interpretation, and application of the 2010 SIAC Rules. Its approach is practical and strategic and considers how each rule features in the context of the realities that practitioners face, while a complementary thematic analysis brings out connections between the rules and those of other institutions. The work benefits from the privileged access to the travaux préparatoires of the 2010 Arbitration Rules Drafting Committee, giving them insight into the purposive thinking behind the amendments, as well as access to SIAC awards and the views of the SIAC Secretariat. The book begins with an analysis of Singapore arbitration law, the history of the SIAC, and a consideration of the rising prominence of Indian parties in SIAC arbitrations and its consequences. Every rule is then examined in detail. The book concludes with chapters dedicated to SIAC domestic arbitrations and cases administered by SIAC which are governed by the UNCITRAL Arbitration Rules. Relevant supporting documents are appended, including SIAC Practice Notes and the SIAC Code of Ethics for Arbitrators.

Henry G, Burnett, and Bret Louis-Alexis. Part II Key Risks and Disputes Associated with International Mining Projects, 7 Purchase and Joint Venture Disputes. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/law/9780198757641.003.0007.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter discusses mineral rights and joint-venture disputes. The sale and purchase of an individual mining project will generally come down to the transfer of mineral rights. Disputes arising in connection with the transfer of mineral rights usually concern the validity and extent of the rights sold and, in particular, the conveyance of the surface rights associated with the project. Such disputes are often contractual in nature, and can be resolved through domestic or international arbitration. Joint ventures involve a relationship between two or more parties, one of which (the operator) will manage the joint venture for the benefit of its co-venturers. Disputes may arise in connection with the operations and management of the joint venture, particularly in purely contractual joint ventures. A frequent matter of contention is the definition of annual work programs and budget and their approval. Disputes may also emerge in connection with the buy-out and valuation of minority interests.

The Case for Investment in Prevention and Control of Noncommunicable Diseases in Jamaica: Evaluating the return on investment of selected tobacco, alcohol, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease interventions. Organización Panamericana de la Salud, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.37774/9789275120545.

Full text
Abstract:
Noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) are a major driver of morbidity and mortality in Jamaica. Beyond the toll on health, NCDs also impose a significant burden on the national economy since individuals with NCDs are more likely to exit the labor force, miss days of work, and/or work at reduced capacity. In addition, high expenditures to treat NCDs impose a direct economic burden to the health system, the society and to the nation of Jamaica, which can lead to reduced investments in areas like education and physical capital, which increase gross domestic product (GDP) in the long run. Unless urgently and adequately addressed, the health and economic burden of NCDs will continue to rise. To help strengthen Member States’ capacity to generate and use economic evidence on NCDs, the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) partnered with the Ministry of Health of Jamaica, the World Health Organization (WHO), the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), and RTI International to develop an Investment Case for NCDs in Jamaica […] It should be noted that the focused nature of the case underestimates the true costs associated with NCDs in Jamaica: only 17 out of the 88 interventions cited in the updated Appendix 3 of the WHO Global NCD Action Plan 2013-2020 are modeled; cancer and chronic respiratory disease interventions are not considered; not all the health benefits of the interventions (for example, the impact of tobacco control policies on lung cancer or chronic respiratory diseases) are accounted for; and for alcohol policies, only the economic impact of adverted mortality is included (the benefits of reducing absenteeism and presenteeism are not) due to methodological limitations. Acknowledgments: We would like to express our appreciation to the following institutions for their contributions to the successful implementation of NCD Investment Case in Jamaica and to the preparation of this Report: Ministry of Health of Jamaica, RTI International, Pan American Health Organization, United Nations Development Programme, and the United Nations Interagency Task Force on Noncommunicable Diseases.

Taylor, Andrew J. Elephant's Edge. Greenwood Publishing Group, Inc., 2005. http://dx.doi.org/10.5040/9798400644672.

Full text
Abstract:
The Republican Party currently enjoys an edge. The advantage can be seen in Congress, state politics, judicial rulings, foreign and domestic policy, party finances, the media, public attitudes, and economic and demographic developments. Yet the Republicans do not seem capable of translating this into a durable electoral majority. Conditions now exist within American politics that will facilitate the establishment of Republican rule. Many of these conditions have ripened during the past decade. They include rules governing elections and campaign finance, shifts in core political values among the public that are consistent with Republican philosophy, and fundamental social and economic changes in American society that are likely to increase the ranks of Republican voters. The author explains in lucid, engaging terms how Republicans have taken control of both houses of Congress and experienced a remarkable resurgence at the state level. He explores how conservatives are utilizing the courts to simultaneously move policy rightward and mobilize sympathetic parts of the electorate. He also examines social and economic changes to show how racial politics, religiosity, and the nature of work and wealth benefit today's Republican Party. Republican rule should not be confused with Republican realignment. These conditions will advantage Republicans in future elections and bring about consistent Republican control of government at all levels—federal, state, and local, executive, legislative, and judicial. However, current conditions do not guarantee the kind of enduring Republican majority many journalists and strategists have predicted. Taylor explains the factors that will prohibit the Republicans from fully exploiting their advantages and dominating American politics the way the Democrats did in the 30 years following the New Deal. These factors include internal and intractable tensions within the Republican Party, the parties' sophisticated political information gathering strategies, and the innate risk aversion of the campaign industry.
