Abstract:
Introduction. Perception is a holistic reflection of objects and phenomena, in which all perception channels — auditory, visual, kinesthetic — are present. The degree of expression of each channel in the general structure of perception differs. Psychological studies usually show the specific weight of perception channels in its general structure in a one-stage «slice» of a certain group of people. No data on the peculiarities of the perception channels of physicians were found in the available literature. There are very few data on the changes of perception channels in one group of subjects over a long period of time. The aim of the study is to research studying the characteristics of perceptual channels in doctors of different specialties and in the students of professional retraining in the specialty «Osteopathy» in the process of training.Materials and methods. The cohort, prospective study was conducted during 2022–2023 on the basis of the Institute of Osteopathy, St. Petersburg. The object of the study was the students of the professional retraining cycle in the specialty «Osteopathy» — 32 people aged 30–68 years (median — 46,4 years), 13 men and 19 women. The examination was carried out 3 times, at the end of the 2nd course, at the 3rd course and at the 4th course. Twenty-three subjects completed the 3-fold survey. Also during 2023, a cohort, one-time survey of physicians was conducted on the basis of Samara City Polyclinic № 1: gynecologists — 27 people 27–68 years old (median 42,37 years old), dentists — 25 people 24–61 years old (median 42,5 years old), pediatricians — 26 people 24–70 years old (median 43,6 years old), therapists — 23 people 24–64 years old (median 39 years old). All subjects had completed higher medical education and more than 1 year of work experience. The questionnaire S. A. Efremtseva′s questionnaire «Diagnostics of the dominant perceptual modality» was used, which consists of 48 questions aimed at identifying the predominant perceptual channel in three directions: auditory, visual or kinesthetic. The maximum number of points for each of the three modality channels is 16 and the minimum is 0. The survey was anonymous. In the questionnaire, participants provided data on their gender, age, work experience, and date of the study.Results. The peculiarity of the structure of dominant channels of perception in doctors (gynecologists, therapists, pediatricians) was revealed: the kinesthetic channel was most often dominant (36–50 %), the visual channel was second (19–30 %), and the polymodal channel was third (19–22 %). The auditory channel as the dominant channel was the most rare, but at least 11 %. Among dentists, the visual channel of perception was predominant in the dominant structure, 40 %, and 4 % less frequently the kinesthetic channel, with polymodal perception dominant in only 4% of cases. In doctors working in the specialties of «Gynecology», «Dentistry», «Pediatrics» and «Therapy» there was no statistically significant difference in the expression of all perception channels (p>0,05). The general structure of perception of primary retraining trainees in the specialty «Osteopathy» underwent changes as the training progressed. The specific weight of the polymodal channel in the general structure of perception increased annually and increased almost 7 times in the 4th course in comparison with the 2nd course (in 43 % of cases the dominance of the kinesthetic channel was combined with the auditory channel, in 57 % — the kinesthetic channel was combined with the visual channel). The specific weight of the auditory channel decreased, and by the 4th course there were no listeners with a dominant auditory channel left. The expression of the kinesthetic channel in the students of the course «Osteopathy» in the course of training systematically increased (p=0,0008). In the 2nd year of training future osteopaths did not differ from doctors of other specialties, in the 4th year they began to differ by greater expression of the kinesthetic channel (p=0,0001). There were no statistically significant dynamics and differences in other channels.Conclusion. In doctors, the kinesthetic channel of perception most often dominates. In the students of professional retraining in the specialty «Osteopathy», as the training progressed, there was a further increase in the expression of the kinesthetic channel of perception. Its greatest increase occurred in the 4th year of training, and future osteopaths began to differ from doctors of other specialties by this indicator.

Abstract:
The paper covers a range of issues related to the specifics of Russian language mastering by Indian students studying in English and Russian. The research is based on an integrative methodological platform that combines approaches to multilingualism formation from the standpoint of psychological linguistics, cognitive linguistics, the theory of language contacts, discourse and communication science. The research involves the techniques of psychological and semantic analyses and verbal associations, the methods of contextual analysis and comparison. The material of the paper is the data obtained from online surveys of Indian students who have been studying at universities in North Ossetia-Alania for six years (elementary and pre-intermediate levels of Russian language proficiency). The study is aimed at identifying perception channels that represent the features of foreign students cognitive style in the Russian natural environment, descripting level-by-level interfering influence of native languages and weak interference of English. Based on text fragments and lexical units, vectors and methods of interlingual interference were demonstrated, its leading types were determined, that are phonetic, phonemic, graphemic, phonemic-graphemic, morphological and lexical. The role of English as a communicative mediator is defined. The analysis done confirmed complex application of auditory, visual and kinesthetic channels at the information input, and revealed the dominance of the auditory perception channel at the information output while learning the Russian language by Indian students. The Indian students cognitive style tends to be simplified through contamination of written and oral speech, compression, abbreviations usage, intensification of associative and semantic links. Strategies for using Internet translation, imitation of mastering the Russian language, literal translation from English into Russian, strategies for the implementation of graphic, phonetic-graphic principles of writing, phonemic and grammatical reduction were identified as the basic communication strategies of Indian students learning Russian.

Abstract:
The article describes the results of research on the process of human perception of information, the definitions of the main channels of perception of the external world, and the diagnoses of the prevailing channel. The experience and practical achievements of scientists are analyzed in the context of psychology, pedagogy, socionics, neurolinguistic programming. Certain methods for diagnosing the dominant channel of human perception of information using electronic resources and software complexes are considered. An extended model of the process of human information perception is presented based on the three-element classification of personality types: visual, audial, kinesthetic. The main stages of the creation of an automated "perception.guide" system for diagnosing the leading channel of information perception with the purpose of choosing the most effective teaching methods using information and communication technologies are revealed. The advantages of using the system for educational purposes are determined.

At the same time, there have not been studied the dynamics of perception as a whole system. The goal of the study is to research the changes of the perception channels among students of the cycle of professional retraining in the specialty «Osteopathy» in the process of 4-year education and to compare it with the perception channels characteristics of teachers of the cycle.Materials and methods. From 2018 to 2021 a cohort, prospective study was conducted. The study involved persons enrolled in a long (3,5 years) cycle of professional retraining in the specialty «Osteopathy» from I to IV courses — 63 people (35 men, 28 women, age from 26 to 52 years, median 36,5 years), and also teachers of osteopathy with at least 5 years of work experience — 20 people (14 men, 6 women, age from 31 to 55 years, median 48 years). An annual survey was conducted based on the questionnaire of S. A. Efremtseva «Diagnostics of the dominant perceptual modality», which consists of 48 questions aimed at identifying the predominant (dominant) channels of perception in three directions: auditory, visual or kinesthetic. The maximum score for each of the three modality channels is 16, the minimum is 0. The survey was anonymous. In the questionnaire, the participants provided only data on their gender, age, study group number, and the date of the study.Results. The general structure of the students′ perception underwent changes during their learning. The specific weight of the kinesthetic channel in the general structure of listeners′ perception grew annually and doubled in the IV year in comparison with the beginning of training. At the same time, the specific weight of other channels of perception decreased steadily. The expression of all channels of listeners′ perception in absolute numbers also increased (p<0,005). The kinesthetic channel showed the most stable positive dynamics. Its expression began to grow already in the second year of the learning (p<0,001), while the expression of the auditory and visual channels had a statistically significant difference only when comparing 3rd and 4th years of the learning (p<0,005). The perception channels among the teachers of osteopathy were characterized by high absolute indices with similar values for individual channels. In half of the subjects, the kinesthetic channel prevailed in the structure of perception, and in the second half the polymodal channel prevailed with a high rate of kinesthetics. The expression of all perception channels of the osteopathic school students during the learning process gradually approached to that of the osteopathy teachers. At the 4th year of the learning, students did not statistically significantly differ from teachers by the absolute values of perception channels indicators.Conclusion. The students of the osteopathic school showed a regular increase in the expression of all perception channels during their learning (p<0,005). The expression of the kinesthetic channel grew most rapidly. The largest increasing across all channels occurred in the 4th year of the learning. During the first three years of the learning, the listeners, in terms of the perception channels expression, gradually approached the teachers who had high indicators by all channels. At the 4th year, the students did not differ statistically significantly from the teachers. Therefore, the primary training in osteopathy should last at least 3,5–4 years for the high perception index formation of perception of an osteopathic physician.

Abstract:
People often connect and integrate information from different sensory channels to form cross-channel connection. Previous studies have proved that vision, as a dominant perception, will affect the perception and recognition of olfactory channels. This study attempts to prove experimentally that olfactory channels have an influence on the perception and recognition of visual information. Experimental method: Subjects were asked to search the target with a specific shape visually after deeply smelling fragrance card, and their respective reaction time was tested. The indicative of olfactory stimuli is regarded as an intragroup variable, and the forward and reverse correlation between target color and olfactory stimuli is regarded as an inter-group variable. The experimental results show that when the color associated with olfactory stimulation appears on the target pattern, it will speed up the visual search, but when the color associated with olfactory stimulation appears on the interference pattern, it will hinder the visual search speed. Conclusion: It is proved that olfactory cues will lead to visual attention bias to its associated colors, indicating that there is a cross-channel influence of olfactory stimuli on visual attention.

Abstract:
We explore a novel approach to complex domain modelling by emphasising primitives based on perception. The usual approach either focuses on actors or cognition associated with tokens that convey information. In related research, we have examined using effects and/or outcomes as primitives, and influences as the generator of those outcomes via categoric functors. That approach (influences, effects) has advantages: it leverages what is known and supports the expanded logics we use, where we want to anticipate and engineer possible futures. But it has weaknesses when placed in a dynamic human-machine system where what is perceived or assumed matters more than what is known. The work reported here builds on previous advances in type specification and reasoning to ‘move the primitives forward’ more toward situation encounter and away from situation understanding. The goal is in the context of shared human-machine systems where: • reaction times are shorter than the traditional ingestion/comprehension/response loop can support; • situations that are too complex or dynamic for current comprehension by any means; • there simply is insufficient knowledge about governing situations for the comprehension model to support action; and/or, • the many machine/human and system/system interfaces that are incapable of conveying the needed insights; that is, the communication channels choke the information or influence flows. While the approach is motivated by the above unfriendly conditions, we expect significant benefits. We will explore these but engineer toward a federated decision paradigm where decisions by local human, machine or synthesis are not whole-situation-aware, but that collectively ‘swarm’ locally across the larger system to be more effective, ‘wiser’ than a convention paradigm may produce. The supposed implementation strategy will be through extending an existing ‘playbooks as code’ project whose goals are to advise on local action by modelling and gaming complex system dynamics. A sponsoring context is ‘grey zone’ competition that avoids armed conflict, but that can segue to a mixed system course of action advisory. The general context is a costly ‘blue swan’ risk in large commercial and government enterprises. The method will focus on patterns and relationships in synthetic categories used to model type transitions within topological models of system influence. One may say this is applied intuitionistic type theory, following mechanisms generally described by synthetic differential geometry. In this context, the motivating supposition of this study is that information-carrying influence channels are best modelled in our challenging domain as perceived types rather than understood types.

Abstract:
Problem Statement. This study presents a psycholinguistic approach to analyzing oral speech, which is based on two key provisions. The first position is related to the acoustic essence of language. This implies that the units arising in the process of speaking and perception, although different, have common acoustic properties. The second position is the recognition of the emotional component in language use. The process of speech perception takes place in two stages: at the stage of direct perception and at the stage of understanding the speech message. The aim of this study is to recognize the dominant emotion depending on the channel of perception (different channels have different capabilities in transmitting information about emotions), as well as the degree of its expression in native and non-native languages. Research results. Thanks to the comparative analysis some coincidences and differences were revealed. With the help of the auditory channel, a coincidence was found during the recognition of positive emotions «joy» (max) and «confidence» (min) in the studied material. Regarding the degree of expression of emotional experiences, the coincidence in two languages during the perception by means of the auditory channel is noted in the average degree of manifestation. The complete coincidence of the positive emotion, namely, «Joy», in German and Russian episodes is also revealed through the visual channel. In terms of the degree of expression of emotions, no coincidences were found in the fragments we studied due to perception through the visual channel. Conclusions. The perception of "positive" emotions in native and non-native languages through the auditory and visual channels is realized in almost the same way. As for the degree of severity of emotional states in Russian and German, the coincidences are recorded to a greater extent using the auditory channel than the visual one. It should be noted that the material presented by the video clips provided a more effective recognition of emotion in speech based on the activation of the auditory and visual channels simultaneously.

Abstract:
Approved for public release; distribution is unlimited<br>This thesis starts from the question of what the key factors are shaping the cohesion of the U.S.-ROK alliance. To answer this question, the author researches how cohesion has evolved since the end of the Korean War. Since previous research has focused on the Korean drivers, this thesis examines dominant U.S. threat perception to balance ROK sides. The U.S. has had four significant crises: Detente, the second Cold War, global terrorism, and the rise of China. Following the four crises, this research divides the whole period into four sub-periods. To gauge alliance cohesion, the author chooses four indicators: official statements and documents by leaders, combined exercises and operations, the institutionalization of the alliance, and combined military capability. The results of the analysis suggest that dominant U.S. threat perception determines the strength of alliance cohesion. When the U.S. perception changed, the cohesion of the U.S.-ROK alliance changed in a same direction. The U.S. does not accept ROK’s attitudes – strengthening or weakening – toward this alliance passively, but actively reflects its interests in alliance cohesion.

Abstract:
The enormous social, economic, and political government-led societal transformation South Africans have experienced over the past 15 years have brought about numerous societal and identity changes. The aim of the present study was to explore how dominant (White participants) and non-dominant (Black participants) groups experiencing the government-led societal transformation process deal with perceptions of intergroup differences based on Social Identity Theory (Tajfel & Turner, 1979, 1986) and related field research. Social Identity Theory predicts that in the presence of intergroup differences group members irrespective of their status position will apply identity management strategies to either improve or maintain their status position. The relationships between perceptions of intergroup relations and identity management strategies as proposed by Social Identity Theory were tested studying 170 second year Rhodes University psychology students. Sixty participants indicated themselves as Black South Africans (representing non-dominant group) and 110 participants identified themselves as White South Africans (dominant group). The results revealed that dominant and non-dominant groups differ systematically regarding the functional interaction between beliefs about the intergroup situation and identity management strategies. The results of the study indicate too, that ingroup identification differentiates between individual and collective strategies irrespective of the group’s status position.

Abstract:
Proponents of the political economy framework for comparative analysis have recently proposed that one of the important variables that influences the way in which uncertainty affects focal organizations is its critical source. This dissertation investigates the relationship between the critical source of perceived environmental uncertainty and the political processes of the channel dyad. Political processes are operationalized as the dominant sentiments or relations of conflict and cooperation which characterize the negotiation process. lt was hypothesized that uncertainty as perceived in the lateral (competitive) environment increases cooperation and decreases conflict among bargainers in a mixed-motive setting. Conversely, uncertainty as perceived in the vertical (input-output) environment increases conflict and decreases cooperation. It was found that lateral uncertainty affected dyadic sentiments as expected. However, vertical uncertainty had no effect on the dominant sentiments of bargainers. The amount of uncertainty as perceived in the external environment as a whole, affected the dominant sentiments of those bargainers who perceived the outcome to not be in their favor. Here a moderate amount of perceived uncertainty led to cooperation, but a high amount led to conflict. Thus it was concluded that perceived environmental uncertainty affects the dominant sentiments of bargaining dyads differently, depending upon: a) its critical source, and b) the amount.<br>Ph. Abstract:
Mahasu is the joint name of four gods whose influence is widespread throughout the Indian states of Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand. Like other deities in the Western Himalayas, they are regarded as royal gods who rule over territories and people. This book traces changes in faith and practices surrounding the Mahasu brothers, and shows how the locals understand these changes by emphasizing the dominant role of humans in the decisions of the gods. The locals are also constantly testing the authenticity of the human mediumship. Thus, the book presents the claim that the gap between local conceptions of divinity and the perceptions of anthropologists regarding gods may be narrower than we think. The Biography of a God: Mahasu in the Himalayas is based on ethnographic research, resulting in an important contribution to the study of Indian village deities, Himalayan Hinduism, lived Hinduism, and the anthropology of religion.

Abstract:
This book provides a comprehensive study of the complex impacts of the war in Ukraine on Russo-Iranian relations, and the resulting consequences for the international relations of the Middle East.In contrast to dominant academic approaches, which view Russo-Iranian relations through the lens of an anti-hegemonic agenda and confrontation with the US-led international order, this study presents an alternative angle stating that the war in Ukraine has sped up Moscow and Tehran's interdependency, primarily because of the protective benefits that it brings to both states. The book analyzes various debates about the impact of the war on Russo-Iranian relations. From the perspective of the emerging literature on authoritarian regionalism, the book explores how domestic politics and common threat perceptions play a role in these states’ decisions to adjust to the systemic changes caused by the war. Chapters address how changes in the strategic environment are affecting Moscow and Tehran’s perception of each other, what factors contribute the most to both states' decision to pursue greater cooperation and how they manage the new conflicts of interest raised by the war. The book also queries whether relations continue to be based on tactical partnership, or whether a stronger alliance between Moscow and Tehran is unfolding, and what the consequences of such a struggle for alliance will be for the wider region.

Chapter 5 connects language, bodily experience, perception, and meaning-making via an exploration of normalcy. Disability and perceptions of bodily difference show how language interrelates to bodily experiences, supporting and challenging socio-cultural habits of perceiving what is normal, health, and human. It points out that language is a bodily and social experience that expresses and shapes our bodily perceptual orientation in the world. To learn a different language is to learn of different bodily social habits, of different ways of perceiving and extending into the world. To be forced to give up a native language, or operate dominantly in a colonizing language, is to be forced to change one’s being in the world, to be dominated by another group’s tacit knowledges which may not resonate with my own.

This chapter discusses the public discourse around the integration process of immigrant Latino workers in Emporia, Kansas. It employs aggregate statistical analysis, media-content analysis, and key-informant interviews to examine how the public discourse has changed over time. Particular attention is given to the arrival of the Somali refugee workers that subsequently altered the discourse on immigrant-worker integration. Findings show that the community perception of Latin Americans shifted significantly once a culturally and ethnically less similar group arrived in town. The discussion includes the role of local actors in immigrant integration with an emphasis on their main employer, Tyson Foods. Contrary to the general challenges of immigrant integration, revolving largely around unauthorized migrants, in this case the difficulty had to do with integrating legal immigrants who had racial and religious differences from not only the mainstream community but from the dominant minority as well.

Abstract:
AbstractFrom a simple channel through which people can communicate at a distance, the Internet has been transformed, evolved and slowly started to dominate different aspects of their lives. In this regard, people in general, and students and universities in particular, began using online platforms for different purposes. The aim of our paper is to examine students’ perception regarding the informal online platforms used in the name of Transilvania University of Brasov, in order to identify the way in which such platforms can influence the collaboration between students and the university. Students’ perception about the Facebook page entitled “Unitbv Crush” -a page created with the purpose of helping students interact and date with each other- were analyzed. A mixed method approach included interviews with 15 top fan students based on the Facebook algorithm of the same university as part of a pilot study and a questionnaire that was applied to 848 students. Results of the research showed that most students thought that the page was created with the purpose of posting fun content and of dating, and that they did not agree with the idea that the page should be administrated by the university. Therefore, the page managed to improve the collaboration between students, but by showing that students did not want for the page to be administrated by the university, the page has little to no influence on improving collaboration between the institution and its students. Universities could benefit from the results of this research, in the case in which they would like to take control over the Crush pages created by students.

In Practices, Perceptions and Prospects for Climate Change Education in Africa. Springer Nature Switzerland, 2025. https://doi.org/10.1007/978-3-031-84081-4_9.

Full text
Abstract:
Abstract Climate change is a global challenge. Even though climate change affects all countries, less-developed countries and poor peasant farmers are especially at risk and have difficulty adapting. Less-developed nations are home to an estimated 500 million small-scale farms, who provide sustenance for approximately two billion people. In addition, it is estimated that these small farms produce nearly 80 per cent of the food consumed in Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa. Existing literature finds Africa is particularly susceptible to the effects of climate fluctuation and change, including rising sea levels, melting glaciers, threatened water supplies, leading to decreased agricultural output, increasing food insecurity, diminished biodiversity, intensifying erosion, drought, and flood. In Africa, smallholder farmers depend on agriculture, which relies on timely rainfall, and thus they increasingly experience the consequences of climate change. This chapter reviews the literature on smallholder farmers in Africa and climate change, focusing on their perceptions of climate change and their adaptation techniques. We also explore how various factors affect smallholder farmers’ perceptions of climate change and their adaptation strategies. Finally, we discuss the need to improve awareness and adaptation capacity. Although farmers in various African countries perceive climate change differently, the literature review reveals that they have some views in common. Most farmers observe changes in temperature and rainfall patterns in their area. They also report experiencing increasing floods and droughts and decreasing crop production. Diversification of crops, changing crops, planting drought-resistant crops, incorporating livestock into crop production, shifting the time of agricultural operations, homestead gardening, increasing irrigation, engaging in mixed farming, and migration are common adaptation strategies reported in African countries. We found various household-related factors (gender, age, education, marital status, family size, etc.), farm-related factors (farming experience, size of the farm, etc.), institutional factors (access to information, extension contact, etc.), as well as other factors (participation in a social group, training, etc.) are affecting local level adaptation strategies among farmers. We contend that farmers are the “front-liners” in adapting to climate change, and government agencies and other national and international organizations should continue their efforts to support them. Moreover, to contribute to the progress of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, farmers’ insights and experiences should be integrated in the dominant policies and plans, including coordination of education about climate change and adaptation strategies. Furthermore, we also advocate for emphasizing improving environmental awareness through environmental education particularly in this region to achieve effective adaptation.

Full text
Abstract:
Mobile money has changed the financial system in many African countries, where it is seen as a convenient alternative to traditional financial services. It is a dominant force in emerging markets, and much of the progress gained in financial inclusion in sub-Saharan Africa is related to the growth of mobile money. Mobile money is used by both the formal and informal sectors. It offers an opportunity for governments to broaden the tax base, and to reach parts of the population that could not previously be reached. In July 2021, during the COVID-19 pandemic, the Tanzanian Government introduced a new levy on electronic mobile money transactions (e-levy). The e-levy was initially between TSh10 and TSh10,000, and increased the cost of mobile money transfers and withdrawals. It was in addition to the existing 18 per cent value added tax (VAT) and 10 per cent excise duty, and was called a ‘patriotic levy’ to finance development projects. It was followed by public outcry, and concern about setbacks to financial inclusion. This paper focuses on micro and small enterprises (MSEs) who are members of savings and credit cooperative societies (SACCOS). We look at their knowledge and perceptions of the e-levy, and its impact on their loan repayments from its introduction in July 2021, through subsequent adjustments, and up to its partial withdrawal in July 2023. The paper is based on the combination of a unique database of loan repayments by 1,571 MSEs in 11 SACCOS, and 601 structured phone interviews with MSEs. The results show that: (1) the amount of MSE loan repayments increased, but the total number of transactions decreased; (2) there is little knowledge about the e-levy; those with more knowledge about the e-levy are more negative about it; (3) the general perception of mobile money is positive; that of the e-levy is negative, due to factors like knowledge, access to information through smartphones, and sector-relevant knowledge.

Grumet, Rebecca, Rafael Perl-Treves, and Jack Staub. Ethylene Mediated Regulation of Cucumis Reproduction - from Sex Expression to Fruit Set. United States Department of Agriculture, 2010. http://dx.doi.org/10.32747/2010.7696533.bard.

Full text
Abstract:
Reproductive development is a critical determinant of agricultural yield. For species with unisexual flowers, floral secualdifferentation adds additional complexity, that can influenec productivity. The hormone ethylene has long, been known to play a primary role in sex determination in the Cucumis species cucumber (C. sativus) and melon (C. melo). Our objectives were to: (1) Determine critical sites of ethylene production and perception for sex determination; (2) Identify additional ethylene related genes associated with sex expression; and (3) Examine the role of environment ami prior fruit set on sex expression, pistillate flower maturation, and fruit set. We made progress in each of these areas. (1) Transgenic melon produced with the Arabidopsis dominant negative ethylene perception mutant gene, etrl-1, under the control of floral primordia targeted promoters [AP3 (petal and stamen) and CRC (carpel and nectary)], showed that ethylene perception by the stamen primordia, rather than carpel primordia, is critical for carpel development at the time of sex determination. Transgenic melons also were produced with the ethylene production enzyme gene. ACS, encoding l-aminocyclopropane-lcarboylate synthase, fused to the AP3 or CRC promoters. Consistent with the etr1-1 results, CRC::ACS did not increase femaleness; however, AP3::ACS reduced or eliminated male flower production. The effects of AP3:ACS were stronger than those of 35S::ACS plants, demonstratin g the importance of targeted expression, while avoiding disadvantages of constitutive ethylene production. (2) Linkage analysis coupled with SNP discovery was per formed on ethylene and floral development genes in cucumber populations segregating for the three major sex genes. A break-through towards cloning the cucumber M gene occurred when the melon andromonoecious gene (a), an ACS gene, was cloned in 2008. Both cucumber M and melon a suppress stamen development in pistillate flowers. We hypothesized that cucumber M could be orthologous to melon a, and found that mutations in CsACS2 co-segregated perfectly with the M gene. We also sought to identify miRNA molecules associated with sex determination. miRNA159, whose target in Arabidopsis is GAMYB[a transcription factor gene mediating response to10 gibberellin (GA)], was more highly expressed in young female buds than male. Since GA promotes maleness in cucumber, a micro RNA that counteracts GAMYB could promote femaleness. miRNA157, which in other plants targets transcription factors involved in flower development , was expressed in young male buds and mature flower anthers. (3) Gene expression profiling showed that ethylene-, senescence-, stress- and ubiquitin-related genes were up-regulated in senescing and inhibited fruits, while those undergoing successful fruit set up-regulated photosynthesis, respiration and metabolic genes. Melon plants can change sex expression in response to environmental conditions, leading to changes in yield potential. Unique melon lines with varying sex expression were developed and evaluated in the field in Hancock, Wisconsin . Environmental changes during the growing season influenced sex expression in highly inbred melon lines. Collectively these results are of significance for understanding regulation of sex expression. The fact that both cucumber sex loci identified so far (F and M) encode isoforms of the same ethylene synthesis enzyme, underscores the importance of ethylene as the main sex determining hormone in cucumber. The targeting studies give insight into developmental switch points and suggest a means to develop lines with earlier carpel-bearing flower production and fruit set. These results are of significance for understanding regulation of sex expression to facilitate shorter growing seasons and earlier time to market. Field results provide information for development of management strategies for commercial production of melon cultivars with different sex expression characteristics during fruit production.

Lora, Eduardo. The Distance between Perception and Reality in the Social Domains of Life. Inter-American Development Bank, 2013. http://dx.doi.org/10.18235/0011489.

Full text
Abstract:
The distance between perception and reality with respect to the social domains of life is often striking. Using survey data collected on Latin American countries, this paper provides an overview of the main empirical findings on the gaps between perception and reality in four social domains--health, employment, the perception of security, and social ranking. The overview emphasizes the psychological biases that may explain the gaps. Biases associated with cultural values are very relevant with respect to health and job satisfaction. Cultural differences across countries are pronounced in perceptions of health, while cultural differences across socioeconomic groups are more apparent with respect to job satisfaction. Affect and availability heuristics are the dominant sources of bias in the case of perceptions of security. The formation of subjective social rankings appears to be less culturally dependent but more dependent on the socioeconomic development in the country. The gaps between objective and subjective indicators in the social domains of life are a rich source of data to help understand how perceptions are formed, identify important aspects of people's lives that do not appear in official indicators, inform public debate on social policy, and shed light on public attitudes on key social issues.

Abstract:
Motivated by the dominant role of the US dollar, we explore how monetary policy (MP) shocks in the US can affect a small open economy through the expectation channel. We combine data from a panel survey of firms' expectations in Uruguay with granular information about firms' debt position and total imports on a monthly basis. We show that a contractionary MP shock in the US reduces firms' inflation and cost expectations in Uruguay. This result contrasts with the inflationary effect of this shock on the Uruguayan economy, suggesting uncertainty about the policy regime. We discuss the issues and challenges of this expectation channel.

Abstract:
We identify and study analytically three key channels that shape how inflation affects wealth inequality: (i) the traditional wealth (or Fisher) channel through which inflation redistributes from lenders to borrowers; (ii) an income channel through which inflation reduces the real value of sticky wages and benefits; and (iii) a relative consumption channel through which heterogeneous increases in the prices of different goods affect people differently depending on their consumption baskets. We then quantify these channels during the 2021 inflation surge in Spain using detailed, high-frequency customer-level data from one of the main commercial banks. The unexpected nature of the inflation shock and its perception as temporary in this period in particular closely fit the assumptions behind our theoretical decomposition. Results show that the wealth and income channels are an order of magnitude larger than the consumption channel. Middle-aged individuals were, in net terms, largely unaffected by inflation, while the elderly suffered the most. We find similar results when using representative surveys on households’ wealth, income, and consumption.

Abstract:
Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has profoundly impacted Latvia’s politics, economy and society. It also moved Latvia’s political centre to the right and mainstreamed many of the core policy positions of the dominant Radical Right National Alliance (NA), such as squeezing the Russian language from the public sphere, dismantling the publicly-funded Russian-language school system, and demolishing Soviet-era monuments. This policy shift has been made possible by the NA’s gradual political mainstreaming over the last decade (it has been in a governing coalition since 2011) and long-standing opposition to Putin’s regime, as well as existing contacts and support for Ukrainian nationalist groups. As a result, there is a public perception that the NA was “right” about Russia. As the NA has mainstreamed and abandoned its populist rhetoric, new populist parties have emerged in Latvia. Parliamentary elections in October 2022 saw new “Latvian” (the Latvia First Party, LPV) and “Russian” (Stability! or S!) populist parties elected to parliament. The LPV largely refused to engage with the war, focusing on domestic economic issues, while S! has capitalized on the “we are for peace” niche left open by other parties’ denunciation of Russia’s invasion.

Abstract:
The article is devoted to the analysis of the digital content of publications of one issue of the daily All-Ukrainian newspaper “Den” (March 13-14, 2020). The author aims to identify the main thematic groups of digital designations, as well as to consider cases of justified and unsuccessful use of digital designations. Applying the content analysis method, the author identifies publications that contain numerical notations, determines the number of such notations and their affiliation with the main subject groups. Finds that the thematic group of digital designations “time” (58.6% of all digital designations) is much more dominant. This indicates that timing is the most important task of a newspaper text. The second largest group of digital designations is “measure” (15.8% of all digital designations). It covers dimensions and proportions, measurements of distance, weight, volume, and more. The third largest group of digital signage is money (8.2% of all digital signage), the fourth is numbering (5.2% of all digital signage), and the fifth is people (4.4% of all digital signage). The author focuses on the fact that the digits of the journalist’s text are both a source of information and a catch for the reader. Vivid indicators give the text a sense of accuracy. When referring digital data to the text, journalists must adhere to certain rules for the writing of ordinal numbers with incremental graduation; submission of dates; pointing to unique integers that are combined (or not combined) with units of physical quantities, monetary units, etc.; writing a numerator at the beginning of a sentence; unified presentation of data. This will greatly facilitate the reader’s perception of the information.

Abstract:
Streams can be challenging systems to manage due to their dynamic nature and complex feedbacks between hydrologic, geomorphic, and biological processes that operate over a range of timescales. Stream-riparian ecosystems, also known as riverscapes or river corridors, are affected by events ranging from single storms to large-scale landscape disturbances such as wildfires and landslides. Understanding riverscape dynamics is necessary for identifying potential causes of their degradation, appropriate management actions, and potential restoration strategies. Developing appropriate expectations requires a conceptual understanding of how riverscape conditions and processes vary across the watershed. However, effective interpretation of riverscapes often requires specific expertise related to landscape processes and fluvial geomorphology. This report presents core fluvial geomorphic concepts and develops a reach type classification for riverscapes across Great Basin National Park (GRBA). We begin by identifying landscape factors and basic fluvial geomorphic principles needed to interpret stream forms and processes in GRBA, differentiating the physical characteristics of stream reaches and the processes that maintain them. The report then describes the forms and dynamics of seven different reach types in GRBA. We relied on a combination of remotely sensed data and field observations to categorize GRBA streams. We identify and describe attributes and dominant processes shaping each reach type. Many GRBA streams are found in steep valleys with coarse substrates. These streams have low sensitivity to disturbances, meaning that they are resistant to change. GRBA also supports a limited number of lower-gradient reaches with finer substrates that are more sensitive to disturbances. GRBA streams have variable degrees of confinement, affecting their capacity for lateral adjustment through channel migration or activation of alternative parallel channels. Large wood is important in creating habitat features and influencing stream dynamics throughout GRBA, although the specific processes and habitats influenced by wood vary across reach types. Glacial history and modern hillslope processes are also important features of current stream processes in GRBA, causing the stream reaches in broader valleys to have unusually low sensitivity to disturbance and allowing them to resist disruption to core fluvial processes. This document provides more of an introductory framework and conceptual foundation, rather than serving as a complete how-to manual for managing park streams. Any specific management questions encountered in the future are likely to require more focused investigation. Our goal is that this document will further build a foundation that leads to wise interpretations, expectations, and decisions regarding river management in GRBA.

Abstract:
Harlequin ducks (Histrionicus histrionicus) are sea ducks that migrate inland each spring to nest along fast-flowing mountain streams. They are considered one of the most imperiled duck species in North America and occur in two distinct populations on the Atlantic and Pacific coasts. The Pacific coast population includes Washington State, where harlequin ducks breed in the Olympic, Cascade, and Selkirk Mountains. This species is designated as a Management Priority Species by the National Park Service within North Cascades National Park Service Complex (NOCA). This report summarizes harlequin duck surveys conducted during 15 years across a 27-year period (1990 and 2017) on major streams within NOCA, and incidental observations collected from 1968–2021. The primary objectives of these surveys were to 1) document the distribution and abundance of harlequin duck observations within NOCA boundaries, 2) describe productivity (number of broods and brood size), 3) describe breeding chronology of harlequin ducks, and 4) describe habitat characteristics of breeding streams. Sixty-eight stream surveys over 15 years resulted in observations of 623 individual harlequin ducks comprising various demographics, including single adults, pairs, and broods. In addition, we collected 184 incidental observations of harlequin ducks from visitors and staff between 1968–2021. Harlequin ducks were observed on 22 separate second- to sixth-order streams throughout NOCA across the entire 53-year span of data, both incidentally and during harlequin duck surveys by Park staff. Harlequin ducks were detected on 8 of the 13 streams that were actively surveyed. Excluding recounts, 88.7% (n = 330) of individual harlequin duck observations during surveys occurred in the Stehekin River drainage. Between all surveys and incidental observations, 135 unpaired females without broods were sighted across all NOCA waterways. Thirty-nine broods were recorded between NOCA surveys and incidental observations, with a mean brood size of 3.61 (± 1.44 SD; range = 2–10). Breeding pairs were recorded as early as April 5 and were seen on streams until June 15, a period of less than seven weeks (median: May 2), but most pairs were observed within a 3-week span, between April 26 and May 17. Single females (unpaired with a male, with (an)other female(s), or with a brood) were observed on streams between April 26 and August 25 (median: July 3), though most observations were made within a 5-week period between June 12 and July 19. Habitat data collected at adult harlequin duck observation sites indicate that the birds often used stream reaches with features that are characteristic of high-energy running water. While adults occupied all instream habitat types identified, non-braided rapids and riffles were used most frequently, followed by pools and backwaters. Larger instream substrate sizes (cobbles and boulders) were present at most observation sites. Adult harlequin ducks were more often found at locations that lacked visible drifting or lodged woody debris, but drift debris was a slightly more abundant debris type. The presence of gravel bars and at least one loafing site was common. Adult harlequin ducks were more often observed in association with vegetation that offered some cover over the channel, but not where banks were undercut. The average channel width at adult observation sites was 34.0 m (range: 6-80 m; n = 114) and 27.6 m (± 15.7 m; range: 10-60 m; n = 12) at brood observation sites. Compared to adult harlequin duck sites, broods were observed more frequently in low velocity habitat (pools, backwaters), but rarely in rapids. Cobble and boulder substrates were still the most dominant substrate type. Contrary to adult ducks, broods were observed most often observed in meandering stream channels, a morphology indicative of low gradient, low velocity stream reaches. Most broods were observed in stream reaches with gravel bars, loafing sites, and...
