Abstract:
This dissertation examines the negotiating style of the Dominican negotiator. The research presented is of qualitative nature -a phenomenology study- which looks at a single country: the Dominican Republic. Two major research strategies used in this research are (a) in-depth interviews with negotiators and observers and (b) a cultural survey instrument of Dominican managers. Data has been collected from primary sources, through interviews of negotiators in the private and public sector and through surveys completed by managers and negotiators. After distilling the interview through horizonalization and other qualitative analyses methods, within-case and across-case analysis were done to determine key findings of each interview. This dissertation provides an insight into the cultural profile of Dominicans, as the foundation to create a descriptive profile of the Dominican negotiator.

Foggie, Janet P. "The Dominicans in Scotland, 1450-1560." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 1998. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/21243.

Full text
Abstract:
The late medieval and early modern church in Scotland has been under studied. The contrast with the voluminous bibliography on the Scottish Reformation could not be greater. The Franciscan Order was the subject of a two volume history written by William M. Bryce and published in 1909 and there has been recent work on the monastic foundations, by Mark Dilworth, published in 1995. The research on the Order of Friars Preachers presented here complements these works but also stands with them in something of a historiographical vacuum. Primary sources were found to be more abundant than this lack of secondary study might suggest. This thesis draws upon a wide range of manuscripts including the exchequer rolls, the treasurers accounts, burgh records, commissary court records, court of session records, private collections and the Vatican Archives. This evidence points to and reflects the view that the Dominican Order was a central feature of civic Christianity and at the forefront of the Catholic Reform of the Scottish Church in the late medieval and early modern period. The history of the order over the 110 years from 1450 to 1560 is given in the first chapter. The next two chapters place that history in context by examining the personnel of the order and the relationships between the Dominicans and the lay communities in which they lived and worked. These three chapters demonstrate that the Dominicans were highly educated, mobile and politically aware. Formally breaking from England, the Dominicans set up their own province in 1481 and began to put into practice the ideals of Dominican Observance in the early sixteenth century and were involved in the reform which was current in the Catholic Church during the period. Chapters Four and Five examine the income of the different houses of friars and how they dealt with the property which they owned. The feuing of lands and the pursuit of rents in court are interpreted as showing the friars to be active in defending their interests within the burghs. The relationship between the laity and the friars is further examined in Chapter Six, through the donations given to the friars for prayers for the dead. These foundations reveal the long-term nature of investment in the order for anniversaries and other divine services. Finally, attitudes to the friars revealed in the Scots literature for the period are examined and there is found to be widespread use by Scots poets of the traditions of anti-mendicant literature.

Abstract:
Tax competitiveness is proven to be of growing importance due to the globalization and digitalization era, which increases the capital mobility of businesses. Hence, countries increasingly need to remain tax competitive. The latter raises the question whether this has a positive influence on the economic performance of a country. This dissertation aims to shed light on the impact of the Dutch corporate taxation system on its economic performance over the period 1995 until 2018. An OLS regression was performed to answer the main research question; "Do Dutch corporate taxes impact the economic performance of the Netherlands?" The effect of various explanatory variables such as statutory, effective, and implicit corporate tax rates, onthe dependent variables GDP growth, net FDI, and GCF were examined. The empirical results of the study present the negative and significant relationship between effective corporate tax rates and GDP growth as well as the positive and significant relationship between corporate tax revenues and GDP growth. Moreover, statutory corporate tax rates demonstrate a negative and significant impact on net FDI. The 2007 tax reform, used as a control variable, has a positive and significant impact on net FDI. The dependent variable GCF does not disclose any relevant significance with the explanatory variables. To scrutinize the results, it can be concluded that to a certain degree Dutch corporate taxes do influence the economic performance of the Netherlands.

Andors, Jessica 1971. "City and island : Dominicans in Lawrence : transnational community formation in a globalizing world." Thesis, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, 1999. http://hdl.handle.net/1721.1/9323.

Abstract:

As an exploration of the Dominican immigrant community in Lawrence, Massachusetts, this thesis seeks to understand how the continuing motives for migration, as well as the barriers and opportunities facing Dominicans in Lawrence, depend on a complex intersection of political, economic, cultural, and social forces linking the Dominican Republic and the City. Historic economic and political ties create strong objective and cultural-ideological links between the Island and the United States and give rise to a set of transnational practices through which immigrants maintain ties to their homeland. The history of the City also intersects with a restructuring of the regional and global economy to shape the nature of immigrant incorporation into local labor markets and political and social structures. Dominicans in Lawrence negotiate through these structures by engaging in a broad variety of both transnational and creole practices-involving ties to the Island and cultural adaptations in the City-that in many ways represent a continuity with previous immigrant strategies. Political and economic advancement for Dominicans in the City is complicated by the interaction between objective difficulties, such as the language barrier and persistent racism, and more subjective frameworks such as the American Dream and the dream of returning to the Island. Community development efforts aimed at overcoming these complications should build on the family and social networks of the community and make use of the creative transnational ties that Dominicans in the City have forged.

Kraag, Andy. "Forging Netherlands Maritime Special Operations Forces." Thesis, Monterey, California. Naval Postgraduate School, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/10945/7371.

Full text
Abstract:
Approved for public release; distribution is unlimited
In 2009, the Royal Netherlands Marine Corps started merging its two SOF units into one The Netherlands Maritime Special Operation Forces (NL MARSOF). This newly formed unit is envisioned as a unique mixture of traditional maritime special operations and national counter-terrorism capabilities. Even though the creation of NL MARSOF marks significant progress in the professionalization of Dutch maritime SOF, new challenges in determining its strategic utility and cultural differences between NL MARSOFs sub-units hamper its optimal development and effectiveness. Based on an organizational model of unit culture and a theoretical framework based on SOFs strategic utility, this research explored how NL MARSOF can better unify its culture and clarify its strategic utility. Governing document analysis, survey research, and interviews with key members of NL MARSOF revealed several shortcomings that should be addressed in order to improve NL MARSOFs effectiveness and ensure its survival during times in which the Dutch Ministry of Defense faces the largest budget cutbacks in its history. The survey results and interviews indicate that NL MARSOF is experiencing a sort of identity crisis. Even though NL MARSOF leadership has focused on (infra-)structural elements of the reorganization, it failed to define and communicate a clear mission supported by the majority of the community, and thus offered neither a sense of purpose nor sufficient guidance. This lack of a long-term vision set out in strategic direction now negatively affects the overall performance of NL MARSOF. The way forward is to get NL MARSOF members involved in the process of defining the units way ahead. Strategic management sessions will define the way ahead for NL MARSOF, thereby clarifying its strategic utility. These sessions are the vital first step in improving operational effectiveness. A working group on symbols and traditions will give NL MARSOF its much-needed professional face and provide the symbols (logos, insignias, traditions, and customs) to strengthen the shared system of beliefs and values and thus create a stronger unit culture. Finally, training courses in change management and team-building sessions will help smooth the transition to one NL MARSOF.

Abstract:
Canada and the Netherlands have developed different anti-avoidance techniques. On 13 September 1987, a new general anti-avoidance rule came into effect in Canada. The scope of application of this new rule remains uncertain. Some writers have suggested that the rule incorporates the business purpose test and the step transaction doctrine, while others have contended that section 245 is a version of the abuse of rights doctrine. After a comparative analysis of Canadian and Dutch anti-avoidance techniques, it is suggested that section 245 is a Canadian version of the Dutch judicial doctrine of fraus legis. The two conditions for the application of both instruments, namely that the transaction was entered into with the motive or purpose to avoid tax, and that the avoidance transaction offends the object and spirit of the Act, are in fact the same.

Abstract:
This case study combines elements of exploration and description to examine the interaction of growth management and housing affordability within the Dutch system of spatial planning. In Section I, I introduce the research framework and pose the central research question: How do planners and policymakers in the Netherlands conceptualize and manage the relationship between land and housing markets, and the effects of that relationship on housing affordability? In Section II, I provide an overview of Dutch spatial planning, focusing on planning and policymaking at the national and municipal levels, and summarizing the postwar-era "bundled deconcentration" approach to growth management. Section III covers the economic and political shifts of the 1980s and early 1990s, a period that marked the end of "bundled deconcentration" and ushered in the "compact city" approach to spatial planning. In Section IV, I introduce contemporary issues of land scarcity and housing supply stagnation and summarize my primary interview findings. In Section V, I elaborate on my interview findings and discuss the broader perspectives offered by Dutch planners and economists. Finally, in Section VI, I conclude the case study with a review of findings, final reflections, and suggestions for future research.

Abstract:
In the Netherlands urban construction and development has gone through a progressive process starting from the post-War era all the way to the 21st Century. The focuses have taken physical, economic, social and environmental aspects into consideration and Dutch cities witnessed urban policies addressing urban reconstruction, urban renewal, urban revitalization and regeneration. Prominent urban renewal policies including Urban Renewal Funds, ISV along with Big City Policy all indicate the trend of decentralization from the state to local municipalities and a new power structure between participants at the local level. Further as was observed, urban renewal process in the past decade has been facing obstacles. This dissertation aims at examining local sectors’ roles in the process of urban renewal and urban regeneration in the Netherlands, the trends of reforms and ramifications of their responsibilities, and governance strategies when decentralized administration is becoming the norm under Neo-liberal urban development era. Cases studies from the city of Amsterdam will serve as base stones demonstrating steering of direction of urban construction strategies with emphasis of urban renewal and regeneration, and the shifts of governments’ roles. Apart from that, municipalities’ roles will be examined by their actions along with the policies and the mechanism of cooperation with different social stakes in making projects happen. By understanding the cooperation mechanism and local endeavor indicated by municipalities, semi-public entities and public initiatives, the dissertation will proceed in discussing how different parties contributed in achieving public good in the ending sections. Literature review will project the development scope of urban renewal strategies in the Netherlands from post-war era till today. By synthesizing documents generalizing development patterns and critics about achievements and insufficiencies of urban renewal projects, it is possible to draw out emphasis and local characteristics of urban renewal strategies in the Netherlands. During the process of policy adjustments, national and local government changed their roles in urban governance in terms of financial supports and supervision. Local governments are key leaders in the administrative and cooperative mechanism. More partnership and cooperation happening in the local level with both public and private sector are the focus to be revealed through cases studies. Finally it comes discussions about achievements and insufficiencies with the Netherlands’ experience with evaluations of achievements in terms of public goods. As this is a dissertation in aim at synthesizing policy instruments and in situ local practices, methods and methodologies from both inductive and deductive modes will be applied, covering methods of archival studies, field studies, cases studies, surveys and interviews and methodologies of content analysis, ethnographic methodology and discourse analysis. In the parts of implication and conclusion, governance structure will be discussed with observation of the new trend after 2000. Roles and responsibilities of different stakeholders will be revealed following with discussions of features of Dutch urban renewal. Achievements of urban renewal policies and projects will be evaluated and recommendations from cases studies will be presented in the last part.

Townson, Nicholas. "Thought about emotion among Dominicans in Pisa and the Roman Province in the thirteenth century." Thesis, University of York, 2014. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/7521/.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation’s subject is the discussion of emotions in the Order of Preachers in the thirteenth century. In order to provide precise and concrete context, it focuses on a single convent and region, Pisa and the Roman Province. The first part sketches the community at S. Caterina, describing its early history and introducing aspects of the order’s commitment to study. This is followed by a summary of the connection between the thought of the friars-preacher at Paris and the preaching of the Pisan archbishop, Federico Visconti. The second part addresses ideas about emotion put forward in Dominican theological texts and Sentences commentaries more directly. The first step is a consideration of the importance of the Sentences commentary genre as a means for the diffusion of thought about emotion, taking the discussion of Christ’s passions as an example. The next offers a detailed summary of different treatments of hope, outlining developments in the concepts and vocabulary which the friars used in their teaching. The final chapter is an attempt to bring the different threads together by considering the use of thirteenth-century academic thought about emotion, both in later conventual teaching at S. Caterina and in regular preaching to lay men and women in a central Italian commune.

House, Jonas. "Public acceptance of insects as food in the Netherlands." Thesis, University of Sheffield, 2018. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/22170/.

Full text
Abstract:
In the context of efforts to increase the sustainability of the current agri-food system, a particular focus has been meat consumption, which is associated with public health problems and environmental damage. One proposed means of reducing meat consumption in Europe and the US (the ‘West’) is the use of insects as a high protein, resource-efficient alternative to conventional meat. Western interest in the area has increased in recent years and various insect-based foods are now available, yet uptake remains low. The issue of public acceptance of insects as food remains problematic. However, what exactly public acceptance involves, and how it may be achieved, have been unclear. Academic research investigating the topic typically propounds a highly individualistic notion of public acceptance. Further, little has engaged with consumption of insect-based foods in a ‘real life’ context. This thesis addresses these limitations, investigating the public acceptance of commercially-available insect-based foods in the Netherlands (the foremost Western country in the research, production, sale and advocacy of insects as food). Drawing on theories of practice and actor-network theory, it advances an account of public acceptance as geographically and socially embedded, rather than deriving from individual attitudes and beliefs. The thesis is based on empirical research into both consumption of insect-based foods (using interviews, food diaries, and accompanied shopping, cooking and eating) and their production (using interviews). Key themes include an expanded notion of ‘acceptance’ of foods, in which successful novel foods are conceptualised as being embedded within a coherent framework of culinary practices; the highlighting of ‘edibility’ as something that is achieved relationally by both producers and consumers; insects’ uncertain ontological position, and the implications of this for ‘ethical’ consumption; and the introduction of two new practice-theoretic concepts for social-scientific research on food consumption. Key contributions are identified for academic debates, business, advocacy and policy.

Abstract:
Dissertação de Mestrado Integrado em Medicina Veterinária
The trade between the European Community and third countries, as well as among Member States, of animal products or products of animal origin and live animals, is detailed by an ample collection of harmonized laws and regulations, allowing a similar approach from the competent authorities of the Member States. The referred imports may only enter the Community territory through approved points of entry, the “Border Inspection Post” (BIP), where official veterinary checks are carried out to arriving consignments. BIPs must, to be approved and listed, comply with the general conditions set down in Community legislation, and such compliance is regularly evaluated by the Food and Veterinary Office in inspections carried out in the Member States. Two of the busiest BIPs in Europe are located in the Netherlands, in Rotterdam’s harbour and in Amsterdam’s airport (Schiphol). These are supervised by the Dutch Competent Central Authority, the Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority (VWA). The veterinary checks to perform vary from consignment to consignment, according to their origin, type and purpose of usage. Such controls are supported by a number of electronic programs and interfaces that provide updated information over the consignment in hand. This thesis expects to describe the veterinary checks carried out at Dutch BIPs, from the moment of the consignment’s arrival, to its release/rejection.

Shamsudin, Shakila, and Inge Verbeek. "Cultural adaptation in cross-national business relationships: The Netherlands-Sweden." Thesis, Högskolan i Gävle, Företagsekonomi, 2019. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:hig:diva-29255.

Full text
Abstract:
Aim: The aim of this work is to study the role that culture plays in business relationships between the Netherlands and Sweden. Further, the effects of time and trust on the business relationships are also investigated. The investigation entails whether there are cultural differences between the two countries and how those differences are managed. Method: The research is conducted by a qualitative approach with the use of primary and secondary data. The empirical study is conducted through semi-structured interviews participated by seven Dutch and six Swedish employees from an organization with business operation in the Netherlands and Sweden. Interviews involve one face-to-face meeting and all others are done through Skype due to time, location and cost constraint. Scientific theory is compared against the empirical findings and the coded themes are discussed in analysis. Results and conclusions: The national culture dimensions of Hofstede are compared with the empirical findings and this study supports that the four national culture dimensions of Hofstede’s; Power Distance, Individualism, Femininity and low and middle Uncertainty Avoidance correspond with the description of the Dutch and Swedish interviewees behavior. These national characteristics are observed to have influence in the cross cultural business relationship between the employees in the Netherlands and the employees in Sweden. The two largest cultural difference are in the way the Dutch communicate compared with the Swedes and the perception on pace of work. Although both parties work in different countries, they interact with each other frequently by phone, Skype and face to face meetings due to the fact that they share common customers. The common customers are managed through the local country operation such as Sweden and also at the headquarters level in the Netherlands. As such, the frequent communication results in the development of a working relationship between the Dutch and Swedish colleagues. The efforts to adapt to each other’s cultural differences further increases the trust level in each other's working method in order to serve their customers better. Suggestions for future research: The limitation of the research is that it focuses on one company which belongs to one specific industry. Therefore integrating participants from different companies within the same industry or across industries could result in a dissimilar result. The shortcoming is addressed by suggesting that for future research, this study should be replicated in different industries in the Netherlands and Sweden. Contribution of the thesis: This research contributes to the improvement of business relationships in multinational companies and managers can implement these improvements. Manickam, Anu Ratha Sivagengai. "Future of cluster developments : lessons from Energy Valley, the Netherlands." Thesis, London South Bank University, 2016. http://researchopen.lsbu.ac.uk/1803/.

Full text
Abstract:
The research explored how a Dutch energy cluster embedded within a larger context of European and global developments reflected complex dynamics due to changes in its context. The case study explored Energy Valley of the Netherlands, a peripheral region that meets the challenge of energy transition, regional development and national economic interests. The research engaged complex adaptive systems approach to gain insights into complex cluster dynamics to contribute to cluster study and policy. The research captured insights into increased complexity of an energy cluster due to energy transition and other developments in the cluster context, exacerbated by differences in perceptions and responses of stakeholders to the new challenges. Findings on cluster developments included insights into cluster context, cluster condition, cluster dynamics and cluster transformations, and the interconnectedness of such developments based on Energy Valley and supplementary cases of Karlstad and Silicon Valley. The research findings led to insights into cluster systems developments and a model capturing cluster emergence. The research contributed to cluster theory by developing a CAS approach for cluster study that developed a whole systems approach to understand cluster dynamics, offering to the field of cluster study a qualitative understanding of cluster systems developments. Insights into interconnected developments at the micro, macro and inter-systemic levels, and into energy clusters in the context of energy transition were results of the research. The broad scope and nature of the study meant limitations were inherent and therefore recommendations for future research were included. EU Cluster Policy motivated the research and hence recommendations for policy developments were also part of the research contribution.

Rietveld, Elise. "Unity and multiculturalism in the United Kingdom and The Netherlands." Thesis, Cardiff University, 2014. http://orca.cf.ac.uk/66387/.

Full text
Abstract:
Political theorists agree that some form of unity is necessary for culturally diverse citizens to act collectively and take collectively binding decisions. But they seldom specify what they mean by such unity; agreement on political values, an emotional bond between citizens, shared fundamental ends? Moreover, these political theorists often aim to be of practical use and intend to shape the ideas and guide the actions of political elites. But they neglect to examine how these elites already conceive unity and it is not clear whether they can, as these are the ideas they seek to shape or alter. This thesis responds to these two gaps, making three contributions: it clarifies why studying existing ideas helps political theorists to be ‘practical’; it clarifies how unity is conceived by political theorists and by political elites; and it argues that one conception of unity is not only most defensible but also plausible within two contexts. I develop my argument as follows. In chapter 1 I show that political theorists remain unclear about what they mean by unity, while often aiming to be ‘practical’; and in chapter 2 I explain why such practicality entails studying the ideas of the elites theorists intend to influence and I outline how to study these. In chapter 3 I present and analyse four hitherto implicit conceptions of unity advanced by political theorists; and in chapters 4 and 5 I show how British and Dutch political elites, respectively, conceive unity in different ways. In chapter 6 I show the implications of how political elites think about unity for political theorists, so I can argue for one of their conceptions of unity in chapter 7. I thus show that paradoxically, in a time when multiculturalism is often considered divisive, a ‘multicultural’ conception of unity proves both most defensible and plausible.

Ammerman, David Allen. "Household capital structure and financial resilience: evidence from the Netherlands." Diss., Kansas State University, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/2097/35240.

Abstract:

Since 2008, the effects of the Great Recession have lingered in memory and in public discourse, and have underscored the need to better understand the determinants of financial resilience. Financial resilience refers to the household’s ability to absorb and respond to financial shocks (MacKinnon & Derickson, 2013). A financial shock may be induced by a rapid decline in income or asset values, an increase in expenses, or some combination thereof. Solvency -- the relationship between a household’s assets and liabilities -- is one aspect of financial resilience: maintaining a healthy debt ratio affords a household the opportunity to liquidate assets to meet debt obligations in response to a financial shock. Thus, the practical question which inspired this dissertation was "what is the right amount of debt for the household?" Within the personal finance and consumer economics literature, borrowing and saving -- behaviors which influence household solvency -- are conceptualized in part as functions of individual future orientation. The premise that resources are fungible, however, has led to the characterization of concurrent borrowing and saving as a behavioral anomaly. Corporate finance, by contrast, does not characterize this common practice as an anomaly, but suggests that concurrent borrowing and saving is, in part, a matter of balancing the costs and benefits of debt. However, theories of corporate finance cannot predict or explain how individual future orientation might influence a household’s capital structure. Thus, this dissertation adds to the literature by exploring precisely this question: how does individual future orientation influence household capital structure? The present results suggest, in contrast to the existing body of research, that future orientation is positively associated with an individual’s propensity to use leverage to finance investments; but that within a complex family resource management system, this individual propensity is moderated by the relative bargaining power of the other members of the household.

Mert-gauthier, Esra. "Modeling Permian Petroleum System Of Northeast Netherlands: Hydrocarbon Generation And Migration." Master's thesis, METU, 2010. http://etd.lib.metu.edu.tr/upload/12612508/index.pdf.

Full text
Abstract:
Groningen Gas Field is located within the southern part of the South Permian Basin in the northeast Netherlands. Since several wells have been producing from the Carboniferous-Permian Petroleum System, the field is considered as mature for hydrocarbon exploration. More detailed work is necessary to evaluate further exploration and development opportunities. Thus, evaluation of the subsurface has been carried out as part of the petroleum system concept by using the basin modeling. In this study, seismic interpretation was performed by using 3-dimensional seismic and borehole data with Petrel software in order to understand stratigraphy and structural settings of the area. PetroMod basin analysis software has been used for 1-dimensional and 2-dimensional basin modeling study by integrating interpreted geophysical, geological and geochemical data. Results show that the most recognized traps were formed during pre-Zechstein, and the major generation-migration and accumulation of hydrocarbon commenced during Middle Jurassic and continues to the present time. Since the timing of main hydrocarbon generation varies spatially and has begun after trap formation, both early and late migration enhances the potential of the porous Upper Rotliegend reservoirs. Prospective hydrocarbon traps may occur in the southwestern regions of the basin due to shallower depth of burial. On the other hand, all local structural highs that formed as a result of salt movement create potential traps in the region.
