Full textThe initial hypothesis of this study was that immigrants' involvement in narrow transnational activities is linked to their weaker integration into Quebec society. To test this hypothesis, a series of interviews was conducted with members of the Dominican community of Montreal. These Dominicans were involved in varying levels of transnational activities within political, economic, and cultural spheres. The interviews were aimed at determining the integration process experienced by the different interviewees.
The results of this study showed, in contrast to the hypothesized predictions, that involvement in transnational activities was not linked to lesser levels of integration. In fact, the Dominicans involved in the most intensive transnational activities revealed a capacity to integrate into the receiving society as easily as other Dominicans, often showing a greater dynamism in their integration. Involvement in intensive transnational activities seems to show a capacity on the part of some immigrants to grow and develop in two universes at the same time, that of the receiving and that of the sending society.

Full textBoethius of Dacia is a 13th-century philosopher, known as a modist and "averroist". In this thesis, we intend to give an exact interpretation of the 16th question of his Modi significandi, a philosophico-grammatical text, where the author develops a certain linguistic innateness argument. Some modem scholars consider him, by this innateness argument, as a precursor of Noam Chomsky's nativism. Others believe that such an innateness argument is not theoretically important for his linguistic philosophy. Boethius rather emphasizes the anchoring of language in the structure of things, and for this argument, his position isn't so peculiar at the time. According to our analysis, these are two sides of the same naturalism: everything must be explained by its own nature. From this point of view, Boethius minimizes the role of the human will in the constitution of language and instead of the human will, he introduces, as the foundation of the linguistics, the human nature, which is comparable to the nature of any other animal species. To establish this interpretation of Boethius's theory, we go back to the 12th century and analyze the text of Gundissalinus which gives a horizon for the authors of the 13th century; we compare the theory of Boethius with that of a contemporary Michel de Marbais who emphasizes the role of the will; we also compare it with those of Siger of Brabant or anonymous authors, in reading manuscripts. The majority denies the position of Boethius of Dacia and chooses to renew more traditional positions. Boethius is not a precursor of Chomsky, but a very particular author at that time by his two sided linguistic naturalism.

Full textEminently elegiac, Dominique Fourcade’s corpus is not the less drained of lyrical effusion. Modern-day Orpheus would not look back, the poem is thrown off-center and hosts within its own language a number of connections which are implemented by strictly diverse presences, themselves uncovering the world. A location of vulnerability, Fourcadean writing raises the question of meaning and representation; it goes as far as doubting the very poetic legitimacy of its questioning in an era marked by violence and death. Dominique Fourcade’s poetry can no longer stand other subjects but the real, language and writing. Entangled in a systemic interpretation which is inherent to the corpus, such poetry turns itself inside out and against the images thus creating a new poetic surface made of interactions with other artistic praxes. The back motif is also a way of being in the world as a responsibility for others. The inside out is the unbearably more-than-visible of the naked body: a vulva-face. One of the aspects of semio-stylistic theory, that which does not sacrifice the body and leads to a materialist hermeneutics of meaning, has an interpretative affinity with this poetry and fulfillingly takes it in charge on certain questions. The writing of Dominique Fourcade places itself on the opaque line of the greatest modern poetic voices

Full textDominique Bagouet, french choregrapher, died in 1992 at the age of 41. Following on this premature death, the dancers of the Company Bagouet took the decision to continue dancing his choreographies and so to pass them on to following generations. To this end they founded the Association “les Carnets Bagouet” (The Bagouet Notebooks). Within this context of exchanges between the past and present, this work seeks to define the specificities of Dominique Bagouet’s choreographic writing. What is clearly shown is that his writing is to be analyzed on 3 levels: a choreographic universe, a choreographic gesture and transmission of the dance. Based on the experience of the “Carnets Bagouet”, this present work seeks to reveal the existence of the idea of transmission at the heart of Dominique Bagouet’s writing, this becoming an essential characteristic of his writing. Finally, what also appears is that the intimate being of the choreographer is the source of a writing whose purpose is to liberate those who dance it. Fundamentally, the matter of all writing is concerned with transmission and thus with the question of relationship. Ultimately we arrived at the theorization of choreographic writing whose point of departure is the self which strives to renew and recreate the links from which this self is formed

Full textOne of the fundamental challenges in multicultural societies is to strengthen and integrate the migrant population from an intercultural and inclusive perspective. This challenge is especially important when we are dealing with the integration of the children of migrant families. In this research I will analyze the integration processes that Dominican teenagers regrouped by their families in Barcelona are undertaking, particularly in Sant Pere, Santa Caterina and La Ribera neighborhoods in Ciutad Vella. Taking into consideration integration as a dynamic, bidirectional and interrelational process between welcoming society and immigrants, I will analyze this process through different dimensions such as: structural, psychosocial, social, cultural, identitarian and other related with life perspectives. The results of this research may answer questions like: how the Dominican teenagers are integrating in the welcoming society, what elements are they helping or damaging their integration process, how education can foster the integration of this population and others similar to them. I have used qualitative research methodology and particularly semi-structured interview to collect information. 30 Dominican teenagers participated in the research sharing with me their migratory and integration experiences in Barcelona. I also got the opinions of 36 persons either form the welcoming society and the Dominican community in Barcelona on how they perceive the integration of the teenagers, In the first part of this thesis I expose the theoretical framework in which I analyze the integration of immigrants in multicultural societies and the methodology that I chose for the research. In the second part I present the results of the research based on the fieldwork with the teenagers, the members of the Dominican community and the members of the welcoming society. Then I try to lay the basis for a socio-pedagogic intervention that could help to integrate the children of immigrant populations. Finally I highlight the limitations I had during my research and the possibility of future research.

The author tries to show in this research the history of Sunday school, overcome challenges over the years, as well as the contribution of the missionaries and churches in order that this school becomes a reality from your appearance. In this effort, it became apparent the Sunday school contributed directly and indirectly in the formation of culture and personality of the people in it inserted. For this, the study begins by presenting an overview of the history of Sunday school to situate the reader in time in order that monitoring the trajectory could be critical and weighty in present status. For this reason, the author is concerned to present the structure of the Sunday school, the changes undergone over the years, as well as the pedagogical proposal to streamline the education service in the churches that develop this system of Christian education. Moreover, our goal is also to know the strength of influence of the Sunday school in the past and its usefulness today. Therefore, the author presents a survey of some intellectuals, whose answers presented served with an instrument of assessing the degree of importance of this agency educator of the Christian faith, as well as the quality of education in the Reformed churches. The conclusions the author reached demonstrates that the Sunday school needs new challenges, but recognizes that even so has contributed to the growth behavioral, social, intellectual and spiritual people, and has failed to fulfill its role in society through the churches and therefore has struggled through leadership in seeking to present the best Sunday school to continue contributing and putting people in Brazilian society highly prepared and committed to education, and the growth of people.

Full textWoman and Word in Dominique Fourcade’s poetry constitute a language which permits the passage from one bank to another. This language aims at forming man and it translate the visible by the invisible. It is a deep language, Lyrical, philosophical, solid, vulnerable but deeply inpenetrable bottomeless and enigmatic. Fourcade’s poetry is a meditation of human suffering which gutters at night as a sum and looks for the reason of its obscurity. In fact, both woman and word are the metaphore of man who feek of cold whose soul is in need of his skin. This poetry is a mirror of the real, it never goes back. It reflets the analytical identity of our time. For this reason this poetry is philosophical full of images because it not only shows the real but also its mystry, its sadness and unfathomable depth. It the coreg this mystry the poet cries that man and world have no more identity, no more history. This kind of poetry shakes our thinking because it expresses the feelings in a movins language full of expansion and continuity reflecting the sound pisture of the intense and painful reality. Such a poetry has its place in human heart because it is born aureole of the spirit in order to show a world required by the poet himself. For this reason the woman and the word are within a lightening universe, it is an active, tonic and accentuated affection which knows no creative passion and penetrates into its sincerity and purity. No objective behind this but the realization of the balance between the sombre matter and the pure spirit. There is nothing beautiful when we pass from one extreme to another. The two abovementioned factors are an armed conflict between two opposing elements namely light and darkness, spirit and matter. Dun tries to impose his will and te gain victory for this cause. Between the woman and the word there is direct relation which associates the reality and thinking, heavne and earth, the mortal and the immortal. It seems that there are means to attain secret harmony of human soul. But this poetry has primitive melancoly because in the obscure revery the poet evoques all the brilliant values which have lost their glooming, leaving a solitary man suspended within a close setting

Full textThe Caribbean region occupies an interesting space in the perpetually changing scene of globalisation. Caribbean countries or islands must continually seek to balance their sense of belonging to a local, regional and international community. This is sometimes a difficult task as any of them are still fighting to balance their evolution as old colonies with the fast pace of globalisation in a new world. This thesis focuses on language teaching at primary level in the islands of Martinique and Dominica. It examines the many issues surrounding language teaching and questions the role of bilingual education in the development of these two Caribbean islands as they evolve within the Caribbean and the world. Firstly, we propose a careful study of the current situation of language teaching in Martinique and Dominica. What are the language policies of these islands? How and to what extent are they implemented? Does language teaching truly reflect the objectives of official texts? Are the present language policies adapted to the sociolinguistic reality of each island?Secondly, we raise the question as to the possibility of the implementation of bilingual education at the pre-primary level in the islands of Martinique and Dominica. We examine the question through the experimenting of different language teaching methods within a school setting and as part of an extracurricular bilingual program. Can we envision alternative approaches to the present situation? What complementary or alternative solutions can we propose to improve on what already exists?Lastly, we look at the subject from an overall perspective and we address the question of bilingual education. We analyse how comparative education, the study of other education systems and the understanding of others play a major role in developing solutions to present day situations. This analysis takes into account issues relating to local, regional and international identities through a study of the historical and sociolinguistic context of the islands of Dominica and Martinique.Based on our analysis and on the literature, we put forward concrete proposals for holistic bilingual education on the islands of Martinique and Dominica. These proposals focus on areas such as language teaching pedagogy, education planning, the bilingual curriculum, teacher training, and language policy for the Caribbean. The main question underlying this thesis is: how do we teach today to better prepare Caribbean citizens for the world of tomorrow?

Full textResults indicate that income losses will be substantial when complying with soil loss standards without introducing soil conservation practices. Net income reduction of 36% can be expected with a reduction in soil loss by 50%. With the introduction of soil conservation practices, substantial reductions in erosion can be obtained with only a minor reduction in net income. For example, with grass strips, 50% reduction in soil loss can be expected with only a 7% reduction in income.
Analysis of the effects of changes in agricultural policies indicates that restricting
access to credit and changes in tenure from secure land holdings to lack of land titles
does not affect the incentive to conserve soil in the short run. Furthermore, analysis
of effects of changes in agricultural pricing policies indicates that the promotions of
coffee, sweet potatoes, and beans represent the least-costly means of meeting the
twin goals of erosion reduction and income maintenance.

( - ?) a ut= 0, onde o parâmetro a satisfaz 0=a= 1.

Abstract: With the general aim of contributing to studies about the phonological level of language in pathological conditions, this thesis presents an analysis of pause insertion and structuring of prosodic domains in the speech of two dysarthric subjects whose dysarthria was due to a car crash. The main objective of this thesis is to describe the prosodic characteristics of dysarthric speech. This was done by using the theory of Prosodic Phonology which states, among other things, that oral language is structured into prosodic domains. A prosodic and intonational approach was considered the most adequate for the data. It took into account intonational, segmental and rhythmic evidences from the three higher domains of prosodic hierarchy: phonological phrase, intonational phrase and phonological utterance. The analysis of the data followed the theoretical perspective of Prosodic Phonology (NESPOR & VOGEL,1986) and Intonation Phonology (LADD ,1996) as used by TENANI (2002) to analyze Brazilian Portuguese data. The data we analyzed consisted of three sets of recordings: a) the reading of a text; b) the reading of experimentally controlled sentences from the corpus by TENANI (2002); and c) spontaneous speech and interviews. Phonological processes that make up the frontiers of prosodic domains were analyzed for the dysarthric subjects, following Tenani¿s proposals. The phonological processes were: pause insertion, fricative voicing, tapping, syllable determination, elision, dyphtongation and vowel degemination. To better describe the phonological alteration of dysarthic speech, a comparison was made between the results of TENANI (2002) for adult Brazilian Portuguese subjects and the dysarthric ones. The results show evidence of the preservation of prosodic domains in the speech of the subjects. Pause insertion was the most used prosodic element to structure the prosodic domains. As for the use of pauses and intonation contour, it was verified that the tonal association correspond to the study carried out by TENANI (2002). With regard to the phonological processes implementation, fricative voicing was done by the subjects mainly inside the same phonological phrase. In the other frontiers considered, they usually choose pause insertion to structure domains. Tapping, whenever used, was applied only inside the same phonological phrase. Syllable degemination indicated important rhythmic aspects in subjects speech. Whenever used, it promoted a more stressed rhythm in the speech of the most severe dysarthric subject. When it was not used in the speech of the slightly dysarthric subject it indicated a more syllabic rhythm which sounded as a Spanish foreign accent to some listeners. As for elision and dyphtongation, the speech of the dysarthric subjects confirm the results by TENANI (2002), for they implement such processes both inside the same phonological phrases and between them. Vowel degemination, however, was blocked through pause insertion
