Within the tunneling regime, optical properties are primarily characterized by the energy difference resulting from energy splitting (ES). The energetics of lactation in domestic dogs was investigated. Two breeds were chosen of different masses, Labrador Retrievers (30kg) and Miniature Schnauzers (6kg). Labradors had larger litter sizes and invested more energy relative to adult weight during lactation. This was shown in a number of ways. During peak lactation they had relatively higher metabolised energy intakes, higher energy expenditures, higher ratios of litter metabolic mass to maternal metabolic mass and produced relatively more milk. In addition Labradors utilised body reserves, an investment the Schnauzers didn't make. Sc

AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) is a key regulatory enzyme that controls the energy homeostasis both on cellular and whole-body level. AbstractNostalgia is a longing for the past and the way we remember how things used to be done, including a wish for things to stay the same. Nostalgia is a central part of understanding societal responses to change because every new technology and way of doing something is, in effect, competing with nostalgia. In this chapter, I examine how nostalgia can hamper efforts at energy innovation, particularly in terms of how it blinds us to change already under way, and how memories of certain innovations can in subtle ways encourage or hinder innovation. Energy from pavements can be harvested in multiple ways to produce clean energy. One of the techniques is electromagnetic energy harvesting, in which mechanical energy from vehicles is captured in the form of input displacement to produce electricity. In this study, a rack-and-pinion electromagnetic energy harvester proposed in the literature as a speed bump is optimized for highway-speed vehicles. A displacement transfer plate is also proposed, with a minimum depth of embedment in the pavement to carry input displacements from passing vehicles and excite the energy harvester. The energy harve

Most global challenges, including global warming, food for everybody, the race for sustainable energy, water quality, dwindling raw materials, and health problems, are chemical problems by nature. Therefore, Humankind cannot meet these challenges without the chemical sciences and will not solve any of these problems without global cooperation. Chemists have always been doing much better than politicians in meeting these challenges, working together across borders through unique collaboration and friendship. Despite fundamentally different political systems and cultural diversity, chemists go b

Two important and current topics of interest for gas machinery operators are emissions and energy efficiency. Current climate change legislation is leaning towards reduced emissions and improvements in energy utilization efficiency, which has renewed the interest in Waste Heat Recovery (WHR) at pipeline stations. In the past, the focus of WHR has been on large-scale applications, with little attention paid to small-scale WHR systems. Many of the concepts discussed in this report have been used in other applications or part of the concept has been implemented before, but not while using waste h

Abstract:
Depending on the metrics and measurement used, at least 3.6 million UK households currently live in fuel poverty (i). This presents a public policy challenge in terms of reducing both fuel poverty and energy demand in ways that are positive for the wider economy, that support employment and income generation, and do not introduce price pressures which further affect the cost of living and doing business. Within the Energy Demand Research Centre (EDRC), the Equity theme has explored the impact of different ways of using of a £9 billion public funding pot, aimed at closing the fuel poverty gap o

The data generated in this project, in conjunction with the assessment procedures developed under PRCI project SIA-1-7, fill critical gaps in predicting the behavior of vintage girth welds. Cost-effective maintenance decisions can be made when integrity assessment can be performed with high confidence. This report covers the work done over four PRCI funding years. The material property data and flaw characteristics from 19 girth welds for Pipe and Weld Tensile Strengths and Weld Strength Mismatch, Charpy Impact Energy,Flaw Characteristics as Reported by NDE, Observations about NDE, and Perform
