Abstract:
AN ABSTRACT OF THE THESIS OFKiran Thapa, for the Master of Science degree in Geography and Environmental Resources, presented on April 8, 2020, at Southern Illinois University Carbondale.TITLE: CONTRIBUTIONS OF OPTICAL REMOTE SENSING TO PERMAFROST MAPPING IN DONNELLY TRAINING AREA, ALASKA MAJOR PROFESSOR: Dr. Guangxing Wang Permafrost occupies about a quarter of the northern hemisphere land with 25.5 million ha. Global warming and anthropogenic activities affect the dynamics of permafrost. Snow and permafrost, in turn, serve as an indicator of climate change and human activity disturbance. The dynamics of permafrost are often estimated using interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR) methods. However, acquiring and processing InSAR images is costly and computation intensive. Due to various spectral variables and indices available from optical images, Landsat satellite images that are free-downloadable provide the potential for studying and monitoring changes of permafrost. The overall objective of this study was to explore the use of optical images as a cost-effective method to map permafrost in Donnelly Training Area (DTA) - an installation located in Alaska. First, Landsat 8 OLI/TIRS images from January 2014 to December 2018 were used to calculate various remote sensing variables. The variables included Land Surface Temperature (LST), albedo, Soil Moisture index (SMI), Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), Normalized Difference Snow Index (NDSI), Normalized Difference Built-up Index (NDBI), Normalized Difference Water index (NDWI), Simple Ratio (SR), Soil Adjusted Vegetation Index (SAVI), Normalized Burn Ratio (NBR), Triangular Vegetation Index(TVI), Visible Atmospherically Resistant Index (VARI), and Active Layer Thickness (ALT). Moreover, elevation, slope, and aspect were obtained from a digital elevation model (DEM). The variables were used to estimate the probabilities of permafrost presence (POP) for DTA. The logistic and linear models were respectively selected and optimized based on logistic and linear stepwise regression for the estimation of and ALT. A total of 414 field observations that were collected from 1994 to 2012 were utilized for validation of models. The results showed that the POP in DTA was significantly affected by all the factors except aspect and EVI. The factor that was most correlated with ln((1-POP)/POP) was elevation, then NDVI, albedo, ALT, LST, NDWI, NDSI, slope, TVI, RSR, SMI, NDBI, SR, SAVI, NBR and VARI. A total of six prediction models were obtained. The elevation, NDVI, LST, TVI, ALT, SLOPE, RSR, SMI, NBR, and NDSI were finally chosen in the best model 5.6 with the smallest relative root mean square error (RMSE) and Akaike information criterion (AIC). The albedo used in previous studies was excluded in the final model, implying that the albedo was not critical to the prediction of POP. In addition to the previously used elevation, NDVI and SMI, other predictors including LST, TVI, ALT, SLOPE, RSR, NBR, and NDSI could not be ignored in the prediction of POP. The model generated reasonable spatial distribution of POP in which POP had greater values in the east, northeast, north, and northwest parts and smaller in the south and southwest parts. Except for NDVI, NDWI, NDSI, aspect, and RSR, moreover, all other predictors showed significant contributions to the prediction of ALT. The SMI, ELEVATION, SAVI, NDBI, SLOPE, LST, SR, EVI, VARI, and TVI were finally selected in the best model 5.14 with the smallest relative RMSE and AIC. The ALT highly varied over the study area with the spatial patterns inversely consistent with those of POP.The results are essential for the governments, policymakers, and other concerned stakeholders to estimate the degradation of permafrost in DTA and minimize the risk of policy decision-making for land use management and planning. This study will help to understand the global climate change, changing ecosystems, increasing concentration in the atmosphere, and human activity-induced disturbance.

Abstract:
The majority of high-latitude Arctic land surface is underlain by permafrost. The high degree of permafrost sensitivity from climatic as well as anthropogenic factors leads to surface deformation and changing active layer. This is typically due to thawing in warmer seasons and refreezing in colder seasons. Such changes can have significant impacts on the infrastructure and hydroecological environment. Hence, the objectives of this study aimed at identifying spatial pattern and magnitude of surface deformation (uplifting and subsidence) from 2015 to 2018 using Sentinel-1A images in an army installation – Donnelly Training Area (DTA), Alaska. To achieve the objectives, Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR) method was applied to 11 descending Level-1 Single Look Complex (SLC) images in thawing seasons, spanning from 8th May 2015 to 25th September 2018 with perpendicular baseline up to ±90 m. A Digital Elevation Model (DEM) of 30 m spatial resolution was employed to remove the phase contributed by altitude, to increase the accuracy of differential interferogram and for geocoding. Multilooking, Goldstein phase filtering and phase unwrapping using Minimum Cost Flow (MCF) were conducted on the resulting phase. The unwrapped phase was converted into displacement and it was then terrain-corrected. The collocation of terrain-corrected coherence and displacement was applied followed by the extraction of displacements in the areas where coherence exceeded 0.4 and the displacement was interpolated. Wilcoxon’s signed ranked test was conducted to test if the median displacements were significantly different from zero. The results showed seasonal deformation ranging from -0.43 meter to +0.34 meters. Subsidence was commonly observed between June and July when temperature was high and, uplifting was noticed as a prominent phenomenon after July and before June due to the expansive nature of silty soil and clays. However, the secular changes from May 2015 to May 2018 showed subsidence as a major phenomenon. This could be attributed to the thawing of ice-rich permafrost underneath probably due to global warming and military training activities. Deformations in all pairs were found to be significantly different from zero. These results corroborate with deformation studies conducted in other parts of Alaska and these findings are useful to researchers, decision-makers, and planners of land management.

Abstract:
This embedded multiple-case study addressed the lack of qualitative research on the contributions of principal leadership behaviors and organizational routines in Montana's distinguished Title I schools. This study was guided by the research question, "How do principal leadership behaviors and organizational routines contribute to the high achievement of Montana's distinguished Title I Schools?" A supporting subquestion for principal leadership behaviors was, "How does relational trust contribute to the high achievement of Montana's distinguished Title I schools?" A supporting subquestion for organizational routines was, "How does collective teacher efficacy contribute to the high achievement of Montana's distinguished Title I schools?" The purpose of this embedded multiple-case study was to describe the role played by principal leadership behaviors and organizational routines in Montana's award-winning Title I schools. Three Montana Title I schools, each of which had been recognized by the Office of Public Instruction as Distinguished Title I Schools for exceptional student achievement, 2006 to 2010, were included in the study. Following Yin's (2009) recommendation, the following data collection methods were utilized: principal and teacher interviews, focus group discussions, observation of building principals, document collection, and administration of quantitative questionnaires on transformational leadership and collective teacher efficacy. Data on principal leadership behaviors was pattern-matched to the theoretical propositions of transformational leadership and relational trust. Data on organizational routines was pattern-matched to the theoretical propositions of professional learning communities and collective teacher efficacy. This study found that principal leadership behaviors of transformational leadership and relational trust had contributed to high student achievement in the schools studied, as had professional learning communities and collective teacher efficacy. The study's cross-case analysis also revealed conclusions, which had not been reported in previous research, in regard to transformational leadership practices, relational trust, and collective teacher efficacy.

Abstract:
My work explores the nature of individual perception, and the side of our lives lived entirely within our minds. I do this through the lens of self-reflection, examining the images of my own mental life and translating them into delicately handwoven cloth. These images and their structures become sensory experiences of the intangible, and a meeting place for my internal life and that of my viewer. The cloth I weave is simultaneously familiar and strange. Through woven surface and imbedded imagery, I attempt to illuminate the deep emotions that necessarily isolate us from each other, and the shared experiences of our physical beings, which connect us. The quiet, ritualistic act of weaving expresses an overlapping of mental and physical space: the resulting cloth bears within each line of warp and weft the metaphor of that process.

Abstract:
This analysis debates and compare the theories of democracy and citizenship in the works of Guillermo O Donnell and Étienne Balibar from their respective books, namely, democracia, agência e estado: teoria com intenção comparativa (O donnell , g. 2010) and ciudadanía (Balibar, É. 2012). I examine both theories, one liberal and the other radically democratic, based on the common or divergent approaches of each author. some concepts and perspectives are particularly relevant, such as state, individuality, exclusion, globalization, bureaucracy, representation, conflict, among others. nevertheless, due to the vast theoretical background of the authors and the close dialogue that their theories keeps with the works taken as reference by the authors, this work develops deeply these structural readings of the respective theories. It s objective reveals the discrepancies and common ideas of such traditional divergent perspectives, however, in preference for the Balibarian radical critique, bringing out it s counter-hegemonic aspects against the liberal route of O Donnell. moreover, the study allows, based on the topicality of the analyzed theories, a critical view of the disturbing current political context, in face of the recent popular movements that spontaneously emerged all over the globe from 2010, since immediately insurrectionary movements to mass protests called pejoratively without cause.

Albricker, Vinicius Assuncao. "A fala cênica sob o entrelaçamento dos princípios e procedimentos de Konstantin Stanislávski e Declan Donnellan." Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/1843/EBAC-9QBN75.

Full text
Abstract:
The present work explores the stage speech based on the interlacing of the principles and procedures of the Russian master Konstantin Stanislavski and the English director Declan Donnellan. According to the perspective of the Stanislavski system, speech is comprehended as a physical action, considering the investigation of its main qualitative aspects and the effective strategies for its development. On the other hand, in Donnellans context, speech is considered a reaction. Following this, it is assumed, in this work, that the Donnellans concept denominated target appears to be an efficient device for the actor´s formation. In this sense, the reflection proposed herein is concentrated on the actor´s work and aims at contributing to the learning and developing of his/her speech competences. Such competences are linked to three major questions about the stage speech: 1) it is an action that is reactive, objectified, transformative, provocative and replete with expressive nuances; 2) it should not be relegated only to the final moments of creation; 3) it does not depend on the outbursts of inspiration. In this context, two approaches dedicated to the acting practice are articulated: the one of Stanislavski, with the procedures of the physical actions, and the other of Donnellan, with the theoretical-practical fundamentals of the target. As a result, an arrangement of methodological proposals is delineated here which describes didactic examples and suggestions for exercises, all tested and developed in the Fisções Studio and directed to a specific work with the stage speech.

Loretto, Teri R. "Anatomy of Influence: The Decisive Effect of Northrop Frye’s Anatomy of Criticism on James Reaney’s Donnellys Trilogy, as Directed by Keith Turnbull." Thèse, Université d'Ottawa / University of Ottawa, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/10393/22723.

Full text
Abstract:
Best known for his Donnellys Trilogy, Canadian playwright James Reaney completed his PHD under Northrop Frye. Frye’s thought and worldview are at the centre of these plays and although Reaney based his writing on a local legend from his childhood, it is undeniably grounded in Frye’s work, Anatomy of Criticism. Frye’s influence on Reaney becomes clear when Reaney’s trilogy is examined through the lens of Frye’s Anatomy. The plays manifest Frye’s structures concretely in space and time using props, setting, music, the spoken word and movement. An examination of the rehearsal hall methods of director Keith Turnbull reveals that Frye’s influence also extended to the actors’ preparation and the collective creation process that was critical to the resulting performances. Reviews and critiques, interviews with participants and an analysis of the trilogy in the context of Anatomy of Criticism give a greater understanding of the mechanics of the work and the resulting performances. In this study, elements of the plays are presented and discussed within the context of or with reference to Frye’s literary theory, making clear how the understanding of one contributes to the comprehension of the other. The relationship between a literary theory and live performance is here a powerful tool to understanding these theatrical works. This research establishes that it was also significant for the creation of one of Canada’s most pivotal dramatic works.

Abstract:
Together with an basic assumption of the main thesis of the theory of singular direct reference, this paper formulates two original theses grounded in the Kripkean notion of proper names. Regarding the assumption of the main thesis, efforts have been made to explicitly explain its essence as a reactionary theory against the description theory of proper names, a theory mainly due to Bertrand Russells (1905) influential article "On Denoting". Grounded in Russell, outlining the fundamental idea of proper names as abbreviated or disguised definite descriptions, this paper moves forward through the critiques of Strawsons (1950) "On Referring", Donnellans (1966) "Reference and Definite Descriptions" and Kripkes (1977) "Speaker's Reference and Semantic Reference". With the historical background in place, in accordance with Salmons (1982) "Reference & Essence" the arguments against the theory of descriptions for proper names are put forward, which leads to the assumption of the mentioned main thesis. Regarding the papers more original theses, the first of these distinguishes between different kinds of proper names depending on whether or not they refer to an object capable of cognitive functioning. The main thrust of this paper is however made through the formulation of the second thesis, as it is being aimed at challenging Kripke's Millian notion of all proper names as being non-connoting. However, in contrast to this view in accordance with the view being put forward in this paper, cognition-referring proper names are connoting. Additionally, a finishing discussion is supplemented concluding descriptions of such connotations as being questions for pragmatism.

Pullen, Ryan Michael. "Acoustic scattering in circular cylindrical shells : a modal approach based on a generalised orthogonality relation." Thesis, Brunel University, 2017. http://bura.brunel.ac.uk/handle/2438/14467.

Full text
Abstract:
During the past 60 years fluid-structure interaction in a wide range of three dimensional circular cylinder problems have been studied. Initial problems considered a rigid wall structure which were solved using impedance model comparisons. Soon after, further solution techniques were used, such as computer simulation, transfer matrix methods and finite element techniques. However such problems were only valid for low frequencies when compared with experiments, this was because that did not include higher order modes. The importance of higher order modes was then established and studies have since included these modes. More recently, mode matching methods have been used to find the amplitudes of waves in structures comprising two or more ducts. This has been done with using an orthogonality relation to find integrals which occur from the application this method. This methodology is demonstrated in as background information and is applied to prototype problems formed of rigid ducts. The rigid duct theory led to the consideration of elastic shells, of which several shell modelling equations were available from the vibration theory. In this thesis, the Donnell-Mustari equations of motion are used to model thin, elastic, fluid-loaded shells of circular cross-section. It is demonstrated that generalised orthogonality relations exist for such shells. Two such relations are found: one for shells subject to axisymmetric motion and one for shells subject to non-axisymmetric motion. These generalised orthogonality relations are new to the field of acoustics and are specific to shells modelled with the Donnell-Mustari equations of motion. The mode matching method is used to find the amplitudes of waves propagating in prototype problems and the generalised orthogonality relations are used to find integrals which occur through this method. Expressions for energy for all considered structure types are used to find the resulting energy for each prototype problem and results for equivalent problems are compared. In addition, verification of the resulting amplitudes is done by ensuring that the matching conditions are suitably satisfied. It is anticipated that the method will have application to the understanding and control of the vibration of cylindrical casings such as those enclosing turbo-machinery. Another application of the method would be the tuning of cylindrical casings, such as those featured on car exhaust systems or HVAC (heating, ventilation and air conditioning) systems.

Pineapple is a tropical fruit of great commercial value, Brazil is the second largest producer of pineapple in the world. The most produced variety in the country is the ?Perola?, followed by Smooth Cayenne and, both have a high degree of sus-ceptibility to fusariosis or pineapple gum disease, caused by the fungus Fusarium guttiforme.Once installed, this disease can reduce pineapple yield by up to 80%. Lactic bacteria (BAL) have their metabolic characteristics and the potential to inhibit bacterial and fungal growth, as well as to neutralize toxins produced by F. guttiforme. This work aimed to determine by in vitro tests the inhibitory effect of lactic acid bacteria on the etiologic agent of fusariosis. Qualitative and quantitative microbial inhibition tests were performed, comparing strains of lactic acid bacteria and crude pineapple extract against F. guttiforme isolates. Determination of mycotoxins in the fungal extracts of these isolates. The inhibitory effect of Lactobacillus plantarum Abx3 and Lactobacillus paracasei subsp.paracasei Abx5.2 was observed for isolateson F. guttiforme, the same did not occur with crude pineapple extract, and mycotoxin production was not detected in extracts of fungal isolates. The preliminary results of this work point out that lactic bacteria present potential to be used as a biocontrol product on F. guttiforme.
O, Farrell Aoife. "Columba : patriarch, prophet and politician. An analysis of the figure of Columba in Adomnán's Vita Columbae and Manus Ơ Donnell's Betha Colaim Chille." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/42106.

Full text
Abstract:
St. Columba is an iconic figure in the early Irish Christian Church. His life and works are testament to the spread of Irish monasticism and the success of Christian colonization of the British Isles. His legacy in the literary canon is simultaneously soldier, scholar and saviour. Two biographies written nearly one thousand years apart are used to analyse the saint’s life as exemplar of spiritual and political probity. The Vita Columbae, penned in the seventh century C.E. by Adomnán, the abbot of Iona, presents the figure of Columba as an early Christian soldier and pioneer; a politically savvy individual conscious of his royal heritage and dynastic responsibilities. He is a figure who bridged the gap between the secular and the ecclesiastical realms of interest, demonstrating the potential for mutual benefit arising from the co-operation between church and state which resulted in the creation of a unique Gaelic Christian identity. In contrast, stands the sixteenth century life of Columba, the Betha Colaim Chille by Manus O’ Donnell who was a direct descendant of the saint. This account inverts the characterization of Columba to reveal him as a figure of resistance to English colonization, a soldier of destiny who will remind the Gaelic peoples of their history and bring about a renaissance in Irish culture and identity. For Adomnán this identity is tied to Columba and the monastery at Iona and articulated as synonymously Irish and Christian under the banner of Columbine monasticism. O' Donnell utilizes and builds on this legacy, depicting Columba as a revolutionary figure who combines the virtues and valour of his pre-Christian forbearers, the Gaelic chieftains. This image is one that all Gaelic peoples might ascribe to and thus avoid the colonisation and consequent Anglicization by the Tudor conquest of sixteenth century Ireland. Both works are important in the development of Irish Language, literature and culture upon which ideas of 'Gaelic Identity’ were articulated. The literary tradition of Columba is a part of a larger body of work that engages with these ideas and demonstrates the importance of Columba and his legacy in the historical record.

Abstract:
Has the theory of direct reference for general terms ontological consequences or requirements? It has normally been said that general terms should be conceived as rigid designators of natural classes”, but this is a very vague expression. What is a natural class” here? Is it a universal? Is it a class of resembling objects or tropes? It is argued that the theory of direct reference functions better in connection with an ontology of universals. The semantic model actually requires certain type of successful cognitive relation with the referent and it is difficult to explain how such a successful connection could be obtained if there are no universal properties, but only perfect resemblance classes of objects or tropes.

"Vibration Characteristics of Thin-Walled Noncircular Composite Cylinders." Diss., Virginia Tech, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/77207.

Full text
Abstract:
The lowest natural frequencies of thin-walled noncircular fiber-reinforced composite cylinders, specifically cylinders with elliptical cross sections, are investigated. Of interest is the variation of the lowest natural frequency, the so-called fundamental frequency, as a function of wall laminate properties, cross-sectional eccentricity and other cylinder geometric parameters. Both simple and clamped support boundary conditions are investigated. Laminate properties that are uniform with circumferential location and laminate properties that vary with circumferential location, by way of varying laminate fiber angle with circumferential location, are considered. As the radius of curvature of a noncircular cylinder varies with circumferential location, it is logical to consider the influence of circumferentially varying fiber orientation on the fundamental frequency. The analysis for predicting the fundamental frequency is based on Donnell shell theory, linear elastic properties, and the use of Hamilton's Principle in conjunction with the Rayleigh-Ritz technique. By use of a so-called shape factor, the magnitude of cylinder normal displacements are modulated to be larger in the regions of the cross section with the largest radius of curvatures and smaller in the regions with the smallest radius of curvature. The final equations for predicting the fundamental frequency are quite complex, but a series of approximations results in a hierarchy of simpler equations, the simplest being referred to as Lo's approximation. The prediction of the fundamental frequencies is spot checked by comparing the results as predicted by the various levels of approximation with predictions of a shell-based finite element model. Considering uniform laminate properties, comparisons between the developed analysis and the finite element model are good for all levels of simpler equations, and excellent in some cases. The developed analysis is subsequently used for parameter studies. It is found that compared to a circular cylinder of the same circumference and with uniform laminate properties, the fundamental frequency of an elliptical cylinder is always less. Surprisingly, based on the results obtained, it appears that for a given cylinder geometry the fundamental frequency is not particularly sensitive to wall lamination sequence, though the wave number in the circumferential direction of the mode shape associated with the fundamental frequency is sensitive to lamination sequence. Considering cylinders with circumferentially varying fiber orientation, comparisons between the developed analysis and the finite element model for most of the cases studied are good. However, the developed equations are limited since it is difficult to find a set of known functions to describe the deformation of an arbitrary lamination sequence when applying the Rayleigh-Ritz technique. In general, in can be concluded that the effect of varying fiber orientation on the fundamental frequency is much less than the influence of cylinder aspect ratio. It can also be concluded that the developed analysis would be an excellent tool for design purposes, as the calculation of the fundamental frequency is done quickly, and design trade-offs studies would be easy.

Abstract:
The purpose of my thesis is to explore and assess recent efforts by Direct Reference Theorists to explain the phenomenon of empty names. Direct Reference theory is, roughly, the theory that the meaning of a singular term (proper name, demonstrative, etc.) is simply its referent. Certain sentences, such as negative existentials ("Santa does not exist"), and sentences in contexts of fiction ("Holmes lived on Baker Street"), present the following challenge to DR Theory: Given that the semantic value of a name is simply its referent, how are we to explain the significance and truth-evaluability of such sentences? There have been various approaches DR Theorists have taken to address this problem, including the Pragmatic Strategy, Pretense Theory, Abstract Object Theory, and the Metalinguistic Strategy. All of these views are analyzed and assessed according to their various strengths and weaknesses. It is concluded that, overall, a Metalinguistic Strategy, supplemented by the notion of pretense, best deals with negative existentials and normal-subject predicate occurrences of empty names, Abstract Object Theory best deals with empty names in meta-fictional contexts, and Pretense Theory best deals with empty names in object-fictional contexts.

Abstract:
This thesis argues that there is an enigma at the heart of Webster's The Duchess of Malfi; a disjunction between the critical history of the play and its reception in performance. Historical disquiet about the status of the play among academics and cultural commentators has not prevented its popularity with audiences. It has, however, affected some of the staging decisions made by theatre companies mounting productions. Allied to other practical factors, these have impacted significantly – and occasionally disastrously – upon performances. It is argued that Webster conceived the play as a meditation on degree and, in aiming to draw out the maximum relevance from the social satire, deliberately created the multi-faceted performative role of Bosola to work his audience in a complex and subversive manner. The role's purpose was determined in response to the structural discontinuity imposed upon the play by the physical realities of staging within the Blackfriars' auditorium. But Webster also needed an agent to serve the plot's development and, in creating the role he also invented a character, developed way beyond the material of his sources. This character proved as trapped as any other in the play by the consequences of his own moral choices. Hovering between role and character, Webster's creation remains liminally poised on ‘the dangerous edge of things.' Part One explores the contexts in which Webster created one of the most ambiguous figures in early modern drama - subverting stock malcontent, villain and revenger - and speculates on the importance of the actor, John Lowin in its genesis. It includes a subsequent performance history of the role. Part Two presents the detailed analysis of a range of professional performances from the past four decades, attempting to demonstrate how the meaning of the play has been altered by decisions made regarding the part of Bosola.

Euverman, Ryan M. "Pumping Intuitions and Making Practice Different: Richard Rorty's 'Intuitive' Account of Reference and Truth." Thesis, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/10756/288466.

Abstract:
This thesis explores and makes explicit various aspects of Richard Rorty's rhetorical program for shifting our traditional conceptions of reference and truth. Rorty wants to persuade us to adopt verification (coping) semantics in place of correspondence seeking semantics. I argue against his intuition pumps by considering Keith Donnellan's remarks on description and reference and argue for a view of correspondence truth that is based on what the object, whatever the object, permits us to say. Making this point allows us to see a purposeful conflation in Rorty's work. If beliefs are true because they are justified, Rorty's fallibilistic remark that any of our beliefs may not be true (in the cautionary sense) would follow. But truths may pay because they follow (as "attributive representations") from 'unblocked' objects, or they may just pay. Thus, I suggest that Donnellan preserves William James' remark that we desire correspondence truth, an everyday explanatory notion.

Abstract:
In Speaker’s Reference and Semantic Reference, Saul Kripke posited two kinds of reference involved in every use of a designator—a semantic reference, to the object picked out by the meaning of the words used—and a speaker reference, to the object to which the speaker aimed to call attention by deploying the designator. Kripke tentatively defined the notion of the speaker’s referent as the object that (i) the speaker wishes to call attention to, on a given occasion, and (ii) that he believes fulfills the conditions for being the description’s semantic referent. Although offered as a definition, this account is best interpreted as a tentative statement of the normal success conditions of speaker reference. As such, it raises the question of how special a role semantic reference plays in successful speaker reference. This report addresses that question by evaluating Kripke’s tentative account in the light of an extended series of examples in which definite descriptions are used to speaker refer to objects other than the objects to which the descriptions uniquely semantically refer. The report concludes that words’ semantic characteristics are only one of several forms of evidence that audiences regularly rely on to discern what object a speaker intends to call attention to by a particular act of reference.
