This 7-page fact sheet written by John Dooner and Michael Andreu and published by the UF/IFAS School of Forest Resources and Conservation outlines a process called timber cruising, surveying timber inventory to estimate the current volume and value of a timber stand. The authors explain the process of timber cruising from initial tree-level measurements to the final total stand-level estimates and various methods for conducting the cruise. https://edis.ifas.ufl.edu/fr426

Abstract:
AbstractVitrinite reflectance data from Namurian rocks in west Clare suggest that high maturation levels, corresponding to palaeotemperatures of 340–370 °C, were attained prior to Variscan deformation. Fluid inclusions in syntectonic quartz veins homogenize between 330 °C and 50 °C with an accompanying decrease in salinity from 27 to 5 eq. wt % NaCl. Maximum fluid inclusion entrapment temperatures ranged from more than 300 °C to 250 °C during Variscan folding in County Clare. The observed maturation levels (c. 7.5% Rmax) far exceed values for simple burial maturation based on the estimated burial history and ‘normal’ geothermal gradients, and do not increase with depth in the Doonbeg No. 1 exploration well. Fluid advective heating is suggested as the most likely mechanism consistent with the Clare reflectance and thermometric data. Vein and shear zone dimensions preclude rapid vertical movements of hot fluids through the section, and extensive lateral fluid migration from sedimentary basins undergoing tectonically driven dewatering to the south or west is therefore proposed.

Levey, D. "Alan Paton’s unpublished fiction (1922- 1934): an initial appraisal." Literator 28, no. 3 (July 30, 2007): 109–30. http://dx.doi.org/10.4102/lit.v28i3.171.

Abstract:
This article considers selected issues in the early fiction of Alan Paton, which is in manuscript form: three novels or parts of novels namely, “Ship of Truth” (1922-1923), “Brother Death” (1930), “John Henry Dane” (1934b), the novel/novella “Secret for seven” (1934d), and the short stories “Little Barbee”, (1928?) and “Calvin Doone” (1930a). Attention is given to the first novel. A summary of the findings follows: even though Paton’s longer unpublished fiction is religiously earnest and at times rhetorically effective, it is simplistic and tends to perpetuate the white, English-speaking patriarchal hegemony of Natal, rather than offer any sustained critique of it. These works are set against the background of the Natal Midlands in the 1920s and 1930s. The shorter fiction is slightly different in nature.

Abstract:
Mutants in the maize defective kernel1 (dek1) gene are blocked in embryogenesis and the endosperm is chalky and lacks an aleurone layer. Here we show that intermediate alleles result in embryos that lack a shoot axis while weak alleles result in endosperms with mosaic aleurone and deformed plants with epidermal cells that resemble bulliform cells, a specialized epidermal cell type. This indicates that dek1 functions in embryonic pattern formation, cell fate specification and pattern formation in the leaf epidermis, and cell fate specification in the endosperm. Thus, thedek1 gene product appears to control different cellular-developmental processes depending on cellular context. The phenotype of the weakdek1-Dooner allele resembles the crinkly4 (cr4)mutant phenotype. Double mutants between dek1 and cr4 showed elements of epistasis, additivity and synergy, suggesting that the gene products may function in overlapping developmental processes. cr4transcript was detectable in dek1 mutant kernels indicating that DEK1 was not required for Cr4 transcript accumulation. To test whether DEK1 regulated the ligand for the CR4 receptor kinase, a genetic mosaic analysis was performed. The dek1 phenotype appeared to be generally cell-autonomous, leading to the conclusion that it was not likely to produce a diffusible signal molecule, and therefore was not likely to regulate the CR4 ligand.

Abstract:
The safety of the tower is depend the tension of guy wire, where it must have the same tensile stress at all positions. To meet this requirement, the load cell guy wire is designed based on strain gauge. Load cell guy wire is designed portable and it can detect stress of the guy wire indirectly. The main component of load cell is a beam, two hooks and a cylinder to form a bending moment force in the beam, the value of the bending moment on the beam will be directly proportional to the increase or decrease in force drag on guy wire. Design process of load cell doone using mathematical analysis, and then the load cell is calibrated by standard load cell, based on the data result of calibration is known that the stress at the guy wire load cell is close and under the yield stress of the load cell material, it is proved that load guy wire cell’s design result is safe to use.

Abstract:
ObjectiveTo independently assess compliance with safe sleeping guidelines for infants <12 months in licensed childcare services.DesignFull-day, in-situ observations of childcare practices (including sleep and non-sleep periods) conducted in 2016–2017.SettingAustralian home-based and centre-based licensed childcare services. All subject to national regulation and legislation to comply with safe sleeping guidelines.ParticipantsThe sample was 18 licensed childcare settings (15 centre-based, 3 home-based) that had infants <12 months (n=49) attending at the time of observation. 31 educators completed self-report surveys.Main outcomes and measuresStandard observations of childcare practices, including a 20-item infant Safe Sleeping Guideline checklist. Educator characteristics, including each individual’s knowledge, beliefs and attitudes regarding safe sleeping practices.Results83% of childcare services were observed to be non-compliant on at least 1 of 20 target guidelines (median 2.5, max=7); 44% were observed placing infants prone/side and 67% used loose bedding, quilts, doonas/duvets, pillows, sheepskins or soft toys in cots. 71% of the childcare settings had a copy of current safe sleeping guidelines displayed either in or at entry to the infant sleep room.ConclusionDespite 25 years of public health messaging, non-compliance with safe sleeping guidelines was observed to be high in childcare services. Understanding of the reasons underlying non-compliance, particularly in contexts were legislative mandate and access to information regarding safe sleeping is high, is critical to informing ongoing public health messaging and should be the focus of future studies.Trial registration numberANZCTR 12618001056280—pre-results.

Abstract:
The origin of the acoustic emissions from a bed of musical grains, impacted by a pestle, is sought in a boundary layer at the leading front of the pestle. The frequencies of the shear modes of vibration in such a layer are compared with the observed frequencies. It is assumed that such a layer is the result of the fluidization of the grain asperities due to the high stress level at the front end. Such a boundary layer can also account for the emissions from plates of sand sliding on a dune surface and from grains shaken in a jar.
