Abstract:
New Year paintings, or nianhua, created in Liangping with the use of the technique of woodblock printing, represent folk art that weaves together distinct local features, aesthetic perception and technical mastery of the artists. One of the key nianhua themes is the imagery of “Men Shen”, or door gods, that banish the evil and guard doors and gates. The article discusses the imagery of door gods in Liangping nianhua printed from woodblocks.

Abstract:
Doors are mediums of architecture as an elementary cultural technique, as they process the key differences of architecture from within and without. The door is a machine, through which the symbolic was materialized in architecture. This contribution describes, by means of examples from cultural, literary and art history, the monologic, epistemic and social aspects and paradoxes of the door as an analog and binary medium. With the obsolescence of the door knob, engendered by the invention of the automated revolving door, the analog door has bid farewell to society and is now mutating to a bio-political instrument which no longer addresses mankind as 'persona', but as a major perturberence.

Abstract:
As a heritage, traditional door and window decoration in Jiangnan area of China has the value of cultural relics. A group of people created them according to the political, economic, cultural, and artistic background at that time, which can reflect the social features, technical level, humanities, and arts at that time. Therefore, traditional door and window decoration in Jiangnan area is a shred of crucial historical evidence to study the society, economy, culture, and craft at that time. Through the evaluation of traditional door and window decoration heritage, the researcher can understand the traditional decorative art of doors and windows in Jiangnan area. The assessment based on the index system forms a quantitative result, and the quantitative data can more intuitively reflect the heritage value. The researcher can give feedback on the evaluation results to the relevant personnel, find the deficiencies and missing parts in the protection and inheritance, and provide suggestions for the follow-up protection and inheritance plan. The protection and inheritance plan can be more effective than traditional doors and windows in Jiangnan area.

Abstract:
In recent years, there has been a growing interest in analyzing the manufacturing techniques of Byzantine church doors in laboratory settings. However, the connection between the iconography and significance of the décor of church doors and their liturgical performativity, as well as their parallels with iconostases in Byzantium, remained a relatively underexplored area of study. This article seeks to delve deeper into these intersections. By focusing on the relationship between the iconography of church doors in Middle to Late Byzantium and their connection to the sacred space and liturgical practices, I aim to shed light on how these artworks played a crucial role in the sacred experience of the Byzantines. This exploration will not highlight only the aesthetic evolution of church door artwork but also emphasize the communal and embodied nature of the religious experience during the Byzantine era. Their intricate designs were not merely decorative elements but served as portals to the divine, enriching the salvation journey of worshippers as they crossed the threshold into the liturgical spaces. By conducting an examination of the development of door iconography and their symbolism throughout the empire’s history, the transformation of narrative depictions from the Middle Byzantine era to the Palaiologan period, culminating in a convergence of symbolic meanings within the sacred space of the church, is delineated. This transformation is further exemplified by a sculpted church door from the Principality of Wallachia. By bridging the gap between art history and religious studies, this article aims to rekindle interest in the profound symbolism and significance of Byzantine church doors and their relation to sacred liturgical space, offering a broader perspective on an important aspect of Byzantine heritage.

Abstract:
On the iconostasis of the church of the Decani monastery, there are the Holy doors that were carved by Patriarch Antonije Sokolović. On the front side of the Holy doors, the iconographer Longin painted the Annunciation. The figures of the Saint King Stefan of Decani and Saint Nicholas are painted on the back of the Holy doors, whose authorship is the subject of this paper. Mirjana Ćorović Ljubinković and most of the experts at the time attributed this painting to Antonije. In 2005, the theory mentioned above has been called into question, and these scenes, without further analysis and evidence, were attributed to Longin. The question of the authorship of the back of the Holy door required complex research that has not been accomplished so far. By analyzing the artistic language of this painting, it can be concluded that it is not Longin’s work and that it has a different author’s writing, and a different style. Under the influence of Cretan art, this painting approaches the Peć school, to which Longin belongs to. By analogy with the characteristics of the carving of the Holy doors, and the other pair of Antonije’s Holy doors in Peć, and by comparing the ducts of the letters, it can be assumed that the author is Antonije. Thus, the former theory of Mirjana Ćorović Ljubinković and her like-minded scholars about Antonije’s authorship proved to be well-founded and withstood the test.

Abstract:
The problem of research and preservation of architectural heritage is more relevant than ever in Ukraine today. This problem is exacerbated under the influence of modern unstable socio-political processes and possible risks associated with the threat of military aggression from the Russian Federation. Therefore, the historical site of the city of Lviv, the oldest part of which is included in the UNESCO world heritage, needs increased attention and security measures from the authorities, the public and the scientific community. Door and window fillings need special protection, as the materials they are made of, namely wood, metal and glass, are short-lived, which emphasizes the relevance of this research. The Secession period in the art and architecture of Lviv was studied by many scientists, architects and art critics, among whom Yuriy Biryulyov is considered the main researcher in this topic. The purpose of the study is to determine the stylistic features of the solution of the entrance wooden doors in residential buildings built in the period between the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th centuries. in Lviv. The study of the stylistic features of the gates was carried out using the methods of compositional analysis (Idak, 2011), which included, in particular, the analysis of the compositional scheme of the doors (grid of axes: first, second and third order), analysis of the placement and shape of light openings (slit openings), analysis of placement, the configuration and nature of the decorative elements that decorate the door, as well as the analysis of the ratio of the proportions of the main elements of the door to the human scale. After that, the study conducted a comparative analysis of the selected doors, on the basis of which common and distinctive characteristics were determined. Based on this, as well as based on the works of researchers of Lviv architecture, the characteristic features of the Secession style were formulated, which were used by craftsmen on Lviv gates made of wood in the Kin period. 19-beginning 20th century.

Jia, Yan. "Imperial Doors of Assyria: Monumentality, Spatiality, and Rituality of the Neo-Assyrian Architectural Doors From Balawat." Thesis, Harvard University, 2015. http://nrs.harvard.edu/urn-3:HUL.InstRepos:14226073.

Full text
Abstract:
The present dissertation, titled "Imperial Doors of Assyria," aims to examine the artistic form and cultural value of Neo-Assyrian architectural doors as highlighted by the three concepts of monumentality, spatiality, and rituality, using the three bronze-banded wooden doors from Balawat as a case study. Having introduced the materials and questions to be raised in this dissertation in the introductory Chapter I, Chapter II on the "monumentality" of the Balawat doors explores the commemorative value of the Balawat doors respectively through material, image and text. The scale and material was the "vehicle of conveyance" for monumentality. The commemorative value of the Balawat doors as Assyrian imperial monuments lies also in their ability to tell stories through historical narrative relief imagery on decorative bronze bands, and cuneiform texts accompanying the reliefs. Chapter III on "spatiality" engages with a spatial reading of the door-band programs, and argues for a "spatial schema" governing the historical narrative on both the closed and the open door. When closed, the program reflects a "center -- periphery" schema, implying a political order between the Assyrian king and his conquered lands; when open, it changes into an "inside -- outside" schema, indicating an ideological order between the god, the people, and the king in-between as an intermediary connecting the two. Either way, the "spatial schema" encapsulates the essence of a clearly Assyrian-oriented world order, with the king always at the center/inside as the maintainer of such order. Chapter IV on "rituality" examines how the monumental doors interacted with people, and how the monumental space was then transformed into a "ritual place." Owing to the architectural function and commemorative value of the Balawat doors, their "rituality" lies in both their constructive roles of ritual events enacted at the doors, and reflective roles of ritual activities depicted on the doors. These two aspects would have cooperated and interacted with each other, and constitute a self-referential system which then reinforces the effectiveness of the ritually-meaningful images on the door. The final Chapter V concludes by highlighting the case of the Balawat doors as an important disclosure of the rules that manifested the syntax of the artistic, architectural, and social expressions of imperial Assyria. As visual metaphors for the Assyrian proto-imperial system, the door-band decorative programs demonstrate the ambitious world view of an expanding territorial state, soon to become one of the strongest empires in the ancient world.

Abstract:
Traditionally the New Zealand Fire Service has been giving the advice to the New Zealand public that it is safer to sleep with their bedroom doors closed. The advice given is not backed up by any technical evidence that it is the best way to position your bedroom door when asleep. Sleeping with your bedroom door closed reduces smoke migration into the bedroom. With the increased use of simple, cheap smoke alarms in many residential houses, it is important to investigate if this is the safest way to position your door when asleep. The aim of this research is to determine whether it is safer to sleep with bedroom doors open or closed in the event of a fire by performing a probabilistic risk assessment. The recommendation made by this research can be used by Fire Services to give the best advice on whether it is safer to sleep with bedroom doors open or closed. The analysis is carried out using two methods. Firstly by evaluating the expected risk to life to occupants by using FiRECAM (Fire Risk Evaluation and Cost Assessment Model), which is being developed at the National Research Council of Canada. The second method used determines the probability of failure using an event tree method. Both analyses recommend that it is safer to sleep with bedroom doors closed while sleeping. Although they agree with each other there are many issues requiring further investigation in both analyses. The results of the analyses are only comparable in a relative sense and are not yet able to be compared in absolute terms.

Stroud, Elizabeth J. "Opening the Door to Meaning-Making in Secondary Art History Instruction." Thesis, University of North Texas, 2006. https://digital.library.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metadc5244/.

Full text
Abstract:
Each day countless numbers of high school students remain standing at the threshold of the door to meaningful learning in art history because of traditional authoritative instructional methods and content. With the keys of feminist pedagogy, interactive teaching methods, and the new art histories, the teacher can now unlock that door and lead students to personally relevant learning on the other side. A case study using both qualitative and quantitative research methods was conducted in a secondary art history classroom to examine the teacher's pedagogical choices and the degree to which they enable meaningful and relevant student learning. The analysis of multiple sources of data, including classroom observations, revealed statistically significant correlations between the teacher's instructional methods and the content, as well as their impact on student meaning-making.

This paper is the supporting document for the Master of Fine Arts exhibition, The Door in the Threshold, held in the Slocumb Galleries at East Tennessee State University from March 15-19, 2010. The exhibition contains twelve pieces of artwork, mounted on the wall. The paper expands upon such themes as memory and family as explored by the work in the gallery. The title of both the paper and show reference the impact of my Armenian heritage on my creative process. Doors in Armenian folklore were sacred places containing the threshold to the spiritual. Thus, my pieces are meant to become doors to the threshold of my past. Also discussed in the paper are the influence of the quilt form and connections to the work of artists Arshile Gorky, Whitfield Lovell, and Karen Hampton.

Abstract:

Steinberg marked a gamechanger in the understanding of Les Demoiselles d'Avignon. The arguments with which Steinberg fought the limits of the formalist critics appear to have become unchallengeable from the 1960s on, the moment that Art History began to undergo a colossal transformation. Steinberg opened the doors wide to new critical focus on Modern Art. Among the doors he opened, were the biographical and psychological considerations about Les Demoiselles. This chapter presents a brief summary of the psychobiographic and contextualist interpretations of the work, including one of the most important by William Rubin who saw Les Demoiselles as a reflection of Picasso's psychosexual problems and presented unpublished documentation that would be of vital importance for future criticism and historiography.

Abstract:
There is an art in requirements that will lead to a product that is completed on budget, on schedule and certified by the FAA. The particular way that requirements are determined, the way that they are worded, the way they are put down on the page all blend to give you the picture of the final product to be developed. The beauty in the process of requirements development is the versatility that the world of requirements has on the vertical flight industry. Requirements are used for manufacturers of small simple products to manufacturers of extremely high complex systems, to include simple or complex software definition, like Artificial Inelegance (AI). Requirements can be documented in multiple ways to include Word, Excel, Dynamic Object Oriented Requirements System (DOORS), or more modern ways like Model Based Systems Engineering (MBSE). This paper is a brief overview of the need for requirements, where requirements fit into the product design lifecycle, and how to develop requirements. The paper will conclude with a brief explanation of how to word good requirements that are verifiable or can be properly validated.

Abstract:
"Technological advances within educational domains permit new teaching systems to emerge. Video-mapping is a technique that involves projecting images on threedimensional surfaces through motion effects. In the case of architectural projects, there are very few uses of videomapping that focus on urban planning and even fewer when the mapping is interactive. However, it is crucial to scale new ways of interpreting design using technologies such as video-mapping. In this research work, the themes of virtual environments, spatial representation, and basic design are combined with video-mapping. Students from the Digital Art and Architecture and the Industrial Design programs worked together in this effort, creating an architectural model made with 3D impressions; the users interacted and selected from the options of colors and textures available for the model city, generating different presentations according to the changes in the settings of the video-mapping software. Thus, this project opened the doors to welcome digital artists into the world of architecture and urbanism."

In this study, the check arm profiles are analyzed virtually in relation to the side door's closing velocity. A virtual door model was developed in ADAMS to simulate the side door closing and opening. The study involves a check arm that guides the ball spring mechanism housing unit over the guide profile. Typically, a check-arm guide profile has two or three indents at a specific location which serves to maintain the door open in those positions. When a door enters an indent, the user must exert an effort to traverse it. Furthermore, the slope profile of the check arm defines the self-closing assist offered from the initial indent to the latching position. By modifying this slope profile, the velocity of self-closing assist is optimized. Multiple iterations on this slope profile of the check arm are examined. The study revealed that the acute slope profile depicted by a brachistochrone curve provides better door closing velocity in check-arm. This study concludes that the slope profile of the check-arm can be optimized and defined for the maximum assist in door self-closing. It was demonstrated that the complete profile of the side door check arm can be designed and optimized to accomplish the desired door closing velocity.</div></div>

Abstract:
Traditional approaches for simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) rely on geometric features such as points, lines, and planes to infer the environment structure. They make hard decisions about the (data) association between observed features and mapped landmarks to update the environment model. This paper makes two contributions to the state of the art in SLAM. First, it generalizes the purely geometric model by introducing semantically meaningful objects, represented as structured models of mid-level part features. Second, instead of making hard, potentially wrong associations between semantic features and objects, it shows that SLAM inference can be performed efficiently with probabilistic data association. The approach not only allows building meaningful maps (containing doors, chairs, cars, etc.) but also offers significant advantages in ambiguous environments.

Abstract:
<p>Revolving entrance doors - usually built as some kind of all glass structure - are part of many publicly accessible buildings. As the architectural demands rise regarding transparency and slenderness of façade members, the entrance doors have to and do go along with these demands. But even if the façade is designed carefully and verified according all relevant standards, the revolving doors are usually considered as a machine, coming with some certificate. This point of view is mostly shared by the manufacturer and the basis for the call for proposals. The certificates provided by the door manufacturer considers the electrical safety, the safety aspects for people handling and using the doors regarding the risk of persons being jammed or hit by the turning door leaves, but not the structural safety of the door system in means of resistance to live, dead, wind or earthquake loads. If we look at the design and verification effort made for standard façade elements, even windows on the one hand, and the different failure consequences for windows and revolving doors on the other hand, it becomes obvious that especially to non-standard and large-scale doors should be paid some attention regarding its structural safety. Below the legal situation of revolving doors is considered in the European context and two quite different examples of revolving doors are discussed regarding their structural assessment.</p>

Abstract:
On March 26, 2004, a six-year-old boy ran into an automatic revolving door when it was about to close. The door caught the boy’s head and killed him. The accident immediately caught the attention of mass media, police, government, and the people. Amidst all the opinions and talks about how dangerous these automatic revolving doors are and how safety measures should be installed, we organized a group of volunteers to analyze the dynamics of the accident to measure the forces, door velocity, acceleration, and if available, the driving current and voltage of the motors. The group not only studied the same door that caused the fatal accident but it also ran the same series of tests on a smaller size power-assisted revolving door, an automatic sliding door, an elevator door, a building shutter, a commuter train door, a bullet train door, an automatic sliding door on an automobile, and its power window. With the safety mechanisms disabled, we measured an impact force of 548kgf on a dummy head of a 3-year old when it was jammed between the revolving door edge and the door frame. The human scull of a child crushes at only 100kgf and our results show that in addition to this large automatic revolving door, the smaller size power-assisted revolving door, the shutter, and manually closing automobile doors generate forces that exceed this limit. These doors inherit the danger of causing fatal accidents.

Abstract:
<div class="section abstract"><div class="htmlview paragraph">Side doors are pivotal components of any vehicle, not only for their aesthetic and safety aspects but also due to their direct interaction with customers. Therefore, ensuring good structural performance of side doors is crucial, especially under various loading conditions during vehicle use. Among the vital performance criteria for door design, torsional stiffness plays an important role in ensuring an adequate life cycle of door. This paper focuses on investigating the impact of several door structural parameters on the torsional stiffness of side doors. These parameters include the positioning of the latch, the number of door side hinge mounting points on doors (single or double bolt), and the design of door inner panel with or without Tailor Welded Blank (TWB) construction. The findings of this study reveal that the change in latch position has the most significant influence on torsional stiffness, followed by the removal of TWB from the inner panel, upon implementation of suitable local hinge reinforcements in TWB removed design, torsional stiffness enhances significantly. While decreasing the number of hinge mountings from a double bolt to a single bolt configuration does affect torsional stiffness, it has the least impact among these three parameters. All these parameters are very useful from vehicle architectural, weight optimization and assembly process aspects and consideration of same would lead to optimized door design with less weight and cost.</div></div>

Abstract:
Existing thermal condition and indoor air quality have a big impact on our work performance, comfort, and health in an indoor environment. Apart from many other parameters, door motions and human movements play crucial role in mass and thermal exchange affecting safety and/or energy management issues in various situations. An isolation room in a hospital setup, for instance, helps to protect patients and staff against the risk of infection by airborne pathogens. Another example is cold storage room facilities, where temperature and moisture control are the key parameters for an optimal operation and energy usage. In this study, we present a transient flow analysis of door motions in indoor environment. The flow physics is resolved by solving 3D compressible RANS (Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes) equations together with the energy and species transport equations and two-equation turbulence models utilizing an overset mesh strategy to address the rigid body motion of doors in a relevant fluid domain involving air and sulfur hexafluoride (SF6). Simulations are performed for three different types of doors, namely a hinged door, a two-way sliding door, and a sliding door considering door opening and closing phases. Transient flow-field data through the door opening area have been processed and a comparative analysis is performed considering the mass flux of the constituents, normal velocity, cumulative mass exchange through the different doors.

Abstract:
Almost six years on from the escalation of conflict in March 2015, the humanitarian crisis in Yemen remains the worst in the world. Eighty percent of the population is in need of some kind of humanitarian assistance or protection, yet the Humanitarian Response Plan is only 42 percent funded. This paper looks at donor contributions to the 2020 Yemen Humanitarian Response Plan to date. Using a methodology based on the relative global share of Gross National Income for high-income countries, it examines whether these countries are doing their ‘fair share’ in funding the response to the crisis in Yemen.

Chong, Alberto E., and Mark Gradstein. Who's Afraid of Foreign Aid?: The Donors' Perspective. Inter-American Development Bank, March 2006. http://dx.doi.org/10.18235/0010855.

Full text
Abstract:
Since efforts by industrial countries to increase the amount of foreign aid they provide have been on the rise recently, it is important to understand the determinants involved. This paper examines the factors affecting support for foreign aid among voters in donor countries. The theoretical model, which considers an endogenous determination of official and private aid flows, suggests that government efficiency is an important factor in this regard, and also ties individual income to aid support through the elasticity of substitution. An empirical analysis of individual attitudes, based on the World Values Surveys, reveals that two factors are positively related to an individual's willingness to support foreign aid: satisfaction with own government performance and individual relative income. Furthermore, when using donor country data, we find that aid is negatively tied to inequality, corruption and taxes. These results are quite consistent with the analytical framework.

Abstract:
This Final Report to Donors presents the findings of the Second Independent Evaluation of the Multilateral Investment Fund (MIF) conducted by the Office of Evaluation and Oversight (OVE) of the Inter-American Development Bank. The first independent evaluation, produced by OVE in 2003 as Donors considered the MIF's request for a replenishment, was prepared to report to Donors on the MIF's performance during its first mandate (MIF I), and to provide lessons learned for the MIF itself. In 2007 Donors approved the replenishment for the MIF (MIF II) and, as part of the replenishment agreement, required that a similar evaluation exercise be conducted at the end of that replenishment. This evaluation, which has the same two objectives as the first, was timed so that the final results are available to inform both MIF Donors and MIF Management about the institution's performance during MIF II.

Herbert, Siân. Donor Support to Electoral Cycles. Institute of Development Studies (IDS), April 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.19088/k4d.2021.043.

Full text
Abstract:
This rapid literature review explains the stages of an election cycle, and how donors provide support to electoral cycles. It draws mainly on policy guidance websites and papers due to the questions of this review and the level of analysis taken (global-level, donor-level). It focuses on publications from the last five years, and/or current/forthcoming donor strategies. The electoral cycle and its stages are well-established policy concepts for which there is widespread acceptance and use. Donor support to electoral cycles (through electoral assistance and electoral observation) is extremely widespread, and the dominant donors in this area are the multilateral organisations like the United Nations (UN) and the European Union (EU), and also the United States (US). While almost all bilateral donors also carry out some work in this area, “almost all major electoral support programmes are provided jointly with international partners” (DFID, 2014, p.5). Bilateral donors may provide broader support to democratic governance initiatives, which may not be framed as electoral assistance, but may contribute to the wider enabling environment. All of the donors reviewed in this query emphasise that their programmes are designed according to the local context and needs, and thus, beyond the big actors - EU, UN and US, there is little overarching information on what the donors do in this area. While there is a significant literature base in the broad area of electoral support, it tends to be focussed at the country, programme, or thematic, level, rather than at the global, or donor, level taken by this paper. There was a peak in global-level publications on this subject around 2006, the year the electoral cycle model was published by the European Commission, International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance (International IDEA), and United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). This review concludes by providing examples of the electoral assistance work carried out by five donors (UN, EU, US, UK and Germany).

Abstract:
This report presents the first intellectual output (IO1) of the Open School Doors project. IO1 has been jointly produced by the whole project consortium. It summarizes the national policies and initiatives among the partnership concerning the parental engagement / involvement of migrant / refugee parents toward school life. To this end literature resources have been collected and then analysed, with the following aims: a) Profile the target group per country, i.e. outline what is the main audience, its specific cultural characteristics (if any), what has to be taken into consideration for the design of a Training Framework that will match both their learning and cultural needs, etc. b) Elaborate on certain cases of successful parental engagement / involvement, i.e. mainly EU, nationally or locally funded projects. The rationale behind the intensive search of such cases was to identify practices that really work but not to ‘reinvent the wheel’, and have a valid starting point for Open Schools Doors (OSD) Training Framework ‐ no doubt that the amplitude and variety of such programs are good indicators of each country policy and posture towards social inclusion and provision of equal opportunities to education. c) Identify the gaps in the current situation among the participant countries and design a Training Framework that will actively facilitate parents’ engagement / involvement to school life in a tangible and long‐term manner. Methodically authors started with desk research and apart from that empirical data was collected from focus groups which were organized with the view to validating what was theoretically concluded from literature resources by asking the main target audience of the project about the Training Framework specifications and features. To this end the last section summarizes findings of both theoretical research and focus groups, providing thus an overview of what is needed and on which directions OSD didactic approach should focus.

Abstract:
Non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and donors increasingly face the twin challenges of demonstrating effectiveness in their work and accountability in their relationships with various stakeholders. Donors, on one hand, are particularly concerned about accountability of NGOs in the efficient and effective delivery of services. NGOs, on the other hand, are often concerned that accountability to donors can overshadow and overwhelm their accountability to communities and to their own missions. The intent of this workshop was to find common ground for building partnerships that could improve both effectiveness and accountability.
