Abstract:

Abstract:

Lichtner, Giacomo. "‘Io so’: the absence of resolution as resolution in contemporary Italian cinema about the ‘years of lead’." Modern Italy 22, no. 2 (May 2017): 167–81. http://dx.doi.org/10.1017/mit.2017.14.

Abstract:
This article analyses three fantasy sequences in contemporary Italian cinema about political terrorism in the period known as the anni di piombo (‘years of lead’). It argues that, faced with divided memories, ideologically-charged narratives of the past, political interference and the so-called Italian anomalies, film-makers have reacted by making the absence of resolution a question in its own right. The article identifies and analyses three specific approaches, each linked to a sequence from each film. The first sequence, ‘uno sfondo di verità’, focuses on Marco Tullio Giordana’s Romanzo di una strage, which navigates the absence of resolution, lamenting it but also exploiting it to force a particular version of events. The second sequence, ‘vado a dormire’, focuses on Marco Bellocchio’s Buongiorno, notte, which uses a dream sequence to fabricate a different resolution, but simultaneously underscore reality. The third sequence, ‘mea culpa’, analyses the invented confession scene in Paolo Sorrentino’s Il Divo, arguing that it employs ambiguity to find closure in imagination itself, rather than in an imagined truth. Through the micro-analyses of these texts, this article seeks to highlight a broader question about cinema’s relationship with ambiguity and mystery in modern Italian history.

Abstract:
Abstract. 3D building models including roofs are a key prerequisite in many fields of applications such as the estimation of solar suitability of rooftops. The accurate reconstruction of roofs with dormers is sometimes challenging. Without careful separation of the dormer points from the points on the roof surface, the estimation of the roof areas is distorted in a most characteristic way, which then let the dormer points appear as white noise. The characteristic distortion of the density distribution of the defects by dormers in comparison to the expected normal distribution is the starting point of our method. We propose a hierarchical method which improves roof reconstruction from LiDAR point clouds in a model-based manner separating dormer points from roof points using classification methods. The key idea is to exploit probability density functions (PDFs) to reveal roof properties and design skilful features for a supervised learning method using support vector machines (SVMs). Properties of the PDFs of measures such as residuals of model-based estimated roof models are used among others. A clustering step leads to a semantic segmentation of the point cloud enabling subsequent reconstruction. The approach is tested based on real data as well as simulated point clouds. The latter allow for experiments for various roof and dormer types with different parameters using an implemented simulation toolbox which generates virtual buildings and synthetic point clouds.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The aims of the present work were to analyze the psychometric behaviour of three sleep scales in elderly people: the BaSIQS (Basic Insomnia and Sleep Quality Scale, Gomes, 2005); the GSES (Glasgow Sleep Effort Scale, Broomfield and Espie, 2005) and the GCTI (Glasgow Content of Thoughts Inventory, Harvey and Espie, 2004), Portuguese versions (Marques et al., 2013a and Marques, 2013b). Then, to explore insomnia complaints, perceived sleep quality, sleep effort and thoughts before falling asleep, in elderly people, by considering cognitive decline and depressive symptoms, and by comparing institutionalized and non-institutionalized elderly. The BaSIQS addresses complaints of insomnia and poor sleep quality. The GSES evaluates the efforts that people make in order to try to fall asleep. The GCTI evaluates recurrent intrusive thoughts that may arise before people fall asleep. Participants consisted of 60 elderly people, 30 institutionalized and 30 non-institutionalized, with ages between 66 and 89 years old (M=77.78; SD=1.98), 65% women and 35% men. As to internal consistency, Chronbach alpha coefficients were α= 0.734, α=0.759 and α= 0.763, respectively for the BaSIQS, GSES and GCTI. The three scales correlated significantly to each other. Comparing the non-institutionalized and institutionalized groups on those sleep measures, there were no significant diferences between them. As to cognitive decline measured by MoCA (Montreal Cognitive Assessment, Nasreddine et al., 2005, Portuguese version by Freitas et al., 2011), and depressive symptoms assessed by GDS (Geriatric Depression Scale, Yesavage et al., 1983), Portuguese version by (Barreto et al., 2003), the institutionalized elders had more cognitive decline comparing to non-institutionalized, but as regards to depressive symptoms no differences were found between groups. Depressive symptoms were associated to higher sleep difficulties in all three scales, but none of the sleep measures correlated with cognitive decline. In conclusion, the results suggest that the BaSIQS, GSES and GCTI have acceptable psychometric properties in our sample of older adults. Depressive symptoms, but not cognitive decline, were associated with poorer sleep. Similarities in sleep measures were found between institutionalized and non-institutionalized elderly. However, given the small sample size, further studies are needed in this population.

Abstract:

Anyone leaning towards sleep quality; this statement is equally applicable to person hospitalized or in home-care center. In fact, it is essential to understand that biological and physiological aspects of sleep vary with age and health of the person. In situations where the need to sleep is disrupted, nurses must attempt to positively influence the satisfaction of this need and ensure that the positive effects of the sleep occurs for the person to promote his recovery and return to health. The goal of this pre-experimental study is to influence the choice of nursing interventions by focusing on better knowledge of the need for sleep and a wider choice of non-pharmacological nursing interventions following a training on sleep for a specific population: hospitalized seniors or in home-care centre. The purpose of this training is to provide optimal nursing interventions for seniors – both hospitalized or in a home-care center – by helping nurses to understand pharmacological interventions effects on elderly and by proposing them non-pharmacological nursing interventions. Two complementary frameworks guide this research: the Virginia Henderson’s conceptual framework and the "Approche adaptée à la personne âgée" framework proposed by the ministère de la Santé et des Services sociaux and adopted by every health organizations. Based on a convenience sample of 59 nurses and 285 seniors, a measurement of knowledge, a measurement of potential means and a measurement of interventions were completed. The results showed that the nurses have improved their knowledge for non-pharmacological interventions, which was reflected by a decrease in medication use to promote sleep among hospitalized and home-care center seniors. Finally, nursing interventions in this research highlighted the impact of nursing care: following the training, positive effects were noticeable about the medication use as a way to promote sleep quality for elders hospitalized and in home-care center.

Abstract:
The population biology and socio-spatial organisation of the woodland dormouse, Graphiurus murinus (Desmarest, 1822), was investigated in a riverine forest at the Great Fish River Reserve (GFRR), South Africa. Data were collected by means of a monthly live trapping and nestbox monitoring programme. Between February 2006 and June 2007, 75 woodland dormice were trapped and/or found in nestboxes and marked: these were 39 adults (13 males, 21 females, five undetermined) and 36 juveniles (five males, 14 females, 17 undetermined). The population showed a steady increase from June 2006–November 2006 and a peak in December 2006–January 2007 as a result of the influx of juveniles. The minimum number of dormice known to be alive (MNA) varied between 40 in December 2006– January 2007 (summer), and a low of three in June 2007 (winter). The range in population density was therefore between 1.2 and 16 dormice per ha. Winter mortality and/or spring dispersal accounted for the disappearance of 55 percent of juveniles. The overall annual adult:juvenile ratio was 1.08. The overall sex ratio was 1.94 female per one male. In females, reproductive activity was observed from September 2006 to end January 2007. The pattern observed in males was similar, as dormice with descended testes were exclusively found from October to end January. Females gave birth during the second half of October to beginning of February. Litters (n = 11) consisted of an average (± SD) 3.73 ± 0.47 young. Over the study period, 27 dormice were trapped or found in nestboxes more than eight times, thus allowing me to estimate their home range size and the spatial overlap between these individuals. On average, dormouse home range size was 2,514 m2 (range: 319 – 4,863 m2). No difference was recorded between one-year old adults and older adults, or between all adults and juveniles. However, adult male dormice (3,989 m2, n = 5) had home ranges almost twice as large as females (2,091 m2, n = 9). No similar trend was found in juveniles. Intrasexual home range overlap was on average 62 percent in adult males, and 26 percent in adult females. However, females overlapped with more neighbouring female home ranges than did males with neighbouring male home ranges, so that, as for males, only small parts of female home ranges were really exclusive. On average, males overlapped a larger Abstract Ecology of woodland dormice M.Sc. Thesis 16 proportion (48 percent) of female home ranges than did females with neighbouring male home ranges (27 percent). In addition, males overlapped with significantly more female home ranges (7.8) than did females with male home ranges (4.9). Trapping success and nestbox data agree with the socio-ecological model. Females showed increased mobility during summer, more likely to find suitable nesting sites, and food for milk production during the reproductive season. The use of nestboxes, however, was constant throughout the year. In males, both the trapping success and nestbox use were higher during the mating season (spring), when an increased mobility and occupation of nestboxes probably increased the chances to locate and mate with (a) receptive female(s). Hence, food and (artificial) nest sites may constitute an important resource for females, whereas females seem to represent the main resource for males. Although food availability was not determined, a comparison of female and male distribution patterns provided interesting information on the mating system of woodland dormice. In GFRR, the dispersion pattern of female woodland dormice was “rather” clumped, i.e. females were non-territorial. As some females showed a dyadic intrasexual overlap of up to 90 percent, and population density was very high at the study site, this may indicate that food was very abundant and/or renewed rapidly. Based on the wide range of birth dates observed during the study period, females clearly come into oestrus at different times. In such circumstances (asynchronous sexual receptivity in females), the Female in Space and Time Hypothesis (Ims 1987a) predicts that males will be non-territorial and promiscuous. Live-trapping, nestbox use and home range data indeed suggested that male woodland dormice do not defend territories, but search for and aggregate around receptive females during the mating season.

After an integrative literature review, it was verified that the sustained nociceptive mechanical stimulation sustained on a latentMyofascial Trigger Point (MTrP) is able to make it active, as it induces central sensitization, while also evoking local muscle cramps with local and referred pain that are directly proportional to the cramps. In addition, spinal neuronal excitation is predominant for tissue tension on the MTrP site, but it is not the only source of sustained contractility state. The MTrP shows itself as a self-sustaining complex cycle, with several access routes to its formation. Objective: To evaluate the cervical postures during sleep and its association with referred myofascial pain in the head and on the neck. Method: An analytical transversal study conducted in the universe of Nursing students over 18 years old at UFPE (Federal University of Pernambuco) Nursing Department. The predictive variable used was the cervical posture during sleep (which was obtained by simulation and the analysis of this posture) and the outcome variables of presence and intensity of referred pain in the head and on the neck (the map of pain and the visual analogue scale) and the craniovertebral angle (the photography of the standing posture and software analysis). Back Pain and Body Posture Evaluation Instrument (BackPEI) and Epworth Sleepiness Scale were used as confounding variables. The data was analyzed using the comparison of average tests and bivariate analysis (Fisher's exact test and chi-squared test). Results: A total of 187 students participated with 93% prevalence of myofascial pain, of which the temporal and frontal headache were the most prevalent rating 59.19% and 58.62%, respectively. Regarding the presence of pain, it was shown to be related with gender (p = 0.008), with higher occurrence in women, and the self-assessed decubitus during sleep (p = 0.013), with higher occurrence on the lateral decubitus. While regarding the intensity of pain, there was an association with physical exercise (p = 0.029), intense pain with higher occurrence among the sedentary, and self-assessed decubitus during sleep (p = 0.01), intense pain with higher occurrence on the lateral decubitus. The cervical posture during sleep was discovered to be related to the referred pain pattern, mainly the flexion (bilateral pain) and inclination (unilateral pain). Conclusion: The 3rd group (flexion) has shown greater pain intensity among all the groups, which corroborates with an association between cervical posture during sleep, head anteriority, MTrP and pain intensity. In addition, sedentarism and lateral and ventral decubitus during sleep have shown influence on myofascial pain. Therapeutic procedures are necessary and evidences need to be collected to support actions on the health education on the quest for the autonomy and the self-care related to myofascial pain

Analysis of the social relations of gender from the production of hammocks in São Bento city, MA. It addresses the key elements that define the city, realizing the existence of a community of practice focused on the manufacture of handmade hammocks. There are presented knowledge shared by the artisans of São Bento city with regard to knowledge and actions of the hammock. It identifies the craft as a category and highlight the importance of manual activity, investigating its historical foundation and legal aspects related to the regulation of the profession of the craftsman. It discusses the social constitution of gender identities, the meanings of the abjection and gender markers related to the hammocks makers of the city studied. It is perceived gender as a performance made in time from a matrix of heteronormative intelligibility, but that is also producing of this matrix, renewing and / or denying it. To this end, we resort to notions of gender and technology devices through the contributions of Judith Butler, Michel Foucault and Teresa de Lauretis. Examining the senses and gender representations from the point of view of hammocks makers, it explores the constitution of their bodies associated with the work and the implications of a profession that is not legally recognized. It appears that their expectations and identity markers are related to the dynamics of the crafts in capitalism, such the as studies of Walter Benjamin, Nestor Canclini and Helena Hirata suggest. Accordingly, it focuses on the craft of hammocks in a capitalist context whose insertion of women in the working world suffers the impacts of informality, invisibility, insecurity and low payment.

Abstract:

Abstract:
