SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, began infecting humans in late 2019 and has since spread to over 57 million people and caused over 1.75 million deaths, as of December 27, 2020. In response to reduced demand and travel restrictions as a result of COVID-19, airlines experienced a 94% reduction in passenger capacity worldwide in April and an estimated 60% reduction in passengers transported for all of 2020. SARS-CoV-2 has been shown to spread on airplanes by infected passengers, so minimizing the risk of secondary infections aboard aircraft may save lives. We present the airplane seat

Abstract. This study analyzes the tornado event on 27 July 2002 at Athens International Airport (Eleutherios Venizelos), a suburban area located at the east of Athens. The tornado was formed approximately at 10:20 UTC and characterized as T4 (Torro Scale). A synoptic discussion of the ECMWF analysis charts from the surface up to the 500 hPa geopotential height level is presented along with the daily composite anomaly (reference period: 1968–1996) of the relative meteorological parameters from NCEP/NCAR reanalysis dataset. AbstractObjectivesMass gatherings (MGs) and special events typically involve large numbers of people in unfamiliar settings, potentially creating unpredictable situations. To assess the information available to guide emergency services and onsite medical teams in planning and preparing for potential mass casualty incidents (MCIs), we analyzed the literature for the past 30 years.MethodsA search of the literature for MCIs at MGs from 1982 to 2012 was conducted and analyzed.ResultsOf the 290 MCIs included in this study, the most frequently reported mechanism of injury involved the movement of pe

On June 27 1980, during the night, a civil airplane (DC-9 Itavia) flying from Bologna to Palermo in Italy blew up and disappeared into the Mediterranean Sea next to Ustica island. All 81 passengers on board died. The most complete inquiry conducted by Judge Rosario Priore concluded in 1999 that the DC-9 accident “occurred following military interception activity”. It did not, however, identify any guilty party. In 2007 Francesco Cossiga, who was Prime Minister in 1980, declared that the DC-9 was mistakenly shot down by a French missile, so leading to the reopening of the case with new internat

The history of a relatively little-studied sub-sector of aircraft manufacturing is described: the development and production of general purpose airplanes. Data on 2690 aircraft models and their production are collected by the author. It is shown that the USA share in the production in the 20th century exceeds 80 %, although in 1930–1945 European countries were the leaders. Assumptions are made about the reasons for the change of leaders. The definition of “general purpose airplane” is given with references to the regulatory documents of the USA, European Union and Russia. It is shown that the

Abstract This introductory chapter begins by recounting how, on January 27, 2018, United Airlines refused to allow a passenger onto an airplane with a peacock, even though the passenger had a medical certificate stating that the presence of the bird was vital to enable her to bear the mental stress of flying. After a while, American airline companies decided to establish new guidelines stating which pets were acceptable and which were not. Why were new guidelines needed? Because things that had seemed obvious, at least within the same culture, are suddenly no longer so. There were new issues h
