Bozza, Mary Louise. "Dorothy Day: On Love for God, Neighbor, and Self." Thesis, Boston College, 2003. http://hdl.handle.net/2345/425.

Full text
Abstract:
Thesis advisor: Stephen J. Pope
In the book Agape and Eros, Anders Nygren proposes a way to understand and analyze Christian love in four “dimensions.” He writes: Love expresses a relation between a subject who loves and an object that is loved. If we turn our attention to the object, and confine ourselves to personal objects, love will be seen to take four different forms, which we shall here describe as the ‘dimensions' of love. These are (1) God's love for man, (2) man's love for God, (3) man's love for his fellow-man, and (4) man's self-love. Throughout the course of her writing, Dorothy Day addresses each of these “dimensions of love” and proposes that none can exist properly in isolation from the other three. How did Dorothy Day understand the proper relationship between these four dimensions? Is her description of the integration of these four dimensions of love appropriate to Christian theology and ethics, and is she consistent in her theology? I argue that Day's writing reveals a harmonious and proper integration of these four dimensions of love, and that she does so properly within the framework of Christian theology. I will do so in the following steps: I will begin by examining Day's understanding of God's love for humanity (Part I), our love for God (Part II), proper love for neighbor (Part III), and proper love for self (Part IV). I will then present a counter-argument (Part VI), and will conclude with an explanation of Day's integration of the four dimensions of love (Part V)

Bonaparte, Margaret. "Reexamining the 1950s American Housewife: How Ladies Home Journal Challenged Domestic Expectations During the Postwar Period." Scholarship @ Claremont, 2014. http://scholarship.claremont.edu/scripps_theses/368.

Full text
Abstract:
My thesis examines the role that Ladies Home Journal played in challenging the ideals of domesticity that emerged in the postwar period in the United States. Originally founded in 1883, Ladies Home Journal emerged from World War II as the most popular and highly circulated women’s magazine. Husband and wife duo Bruce and Beatrice Gould served as co-editors-in-chief from 1935 to 1962, and populated the magazine with numerous ambitious and talented female writers and editors. Many of these female staff members also married and had children, while maintaining their careers. During an era where employees discriminated against women in the workplace, Ladies Home Journal employed women and published numerous articles supporting women in the workplace. In 1963, Betty Friedan claimed that women’s magazines only perpetuated the idealized, feminine housewife, but I argue that her argument oversimplifies the complexities women’s magazines represented during the 1950s. Divided intro three chapters, I analyze the shifting working conditions for women between the 1940s and 1950s, then unearth the working culture of Ladies Home Journal during the postwar period through an analysis of the editors, writers, and articles. Lastly, I examine three female journalists, Dorothy Thompson, Betty Hannah Hoffman, and Maureen Daly who all regularly contributed to the Journal.

Barnette, Sean Michael. "Houses of Hospitality: The Material Rhetoric of Dorothy Day and the Catholic Worker." 2011. http://trace.tennessee.edu/utk_graddiss/1156.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation presents an analysis of the material practice of hospitality in the Catholic Worker movement during the 1930s. Dorothy Day (1897-1980), a radical Catholic social activist, co-founded the Catholic Worker movement in 1932, and one of the movement’s goals was to provide hospitality to poor and unemployed people. Day’s understanding of hospitality, and consequently the practice of hospitality at Catholic Worker houses, was shaped by Day’s experiences as a radical during the 1910s and 1920s, her conversion to Roman Catholicism, and her notions of gender; each of these factors led Day to understand hospitality as consisting primarily in materially grounded practices that lead to the mutual identification of host and guest. Of particular importance to Catholic Worker hospitality were the materials of space and food, which, in addition to promoting the mutual identification of individual hosts and guests, also shaped the identity of the movement itself, the content of the Catholic Worker newspaper, and Day’s and her followers’ critique of bureaucratic, state-sponsored responses to social injustices. Furthermore, the practice of hospitality also provided members of the movement with an epistemological grounding for their critiques of social injustices by allowing them to encounter real presences—subjective, transcendent realities that members of the movement understood in theological language as encounters with Christ. As Day and her followers practiced hospitality, they had to contend with a number of forces of institutionalization that would place conditions on their hospitality and limit its transformative potential. Finally, this analysis contributes to ongoing discussions about the place of hospitality in the teaching of composition by noting that the teaching of writing is subject to similar forces of institutionalization; the ways that Day and her followers responded to such forces—especially through an emphasis on domesticity and religious faith—are important to consider because they suggest that writing teachers need to consider the spiritual roots of transformative hospitality.

As a practice based on religious teachings, charity plays a key role in various religions serving our society. For example, Christians have established numerous charitable organizations by following their belief. At the same time, it’s hard to find similar institutions founded by Confucians, even though they, like Christians, believe in helping others. The goal of this thesis is to understand why this is so. We discover that whereas both Christianity and Confucianism emphasize the importance of charity, the two traditions have developed totally different ways to practice charity. Further, this difference in practice is influenced by the symbolism of the king, as it is found in either tradition. In Christian symbolism, Christ is the king; but through baptism each person becomes identified with Christ, which includes sharing in his role as king. Likewise Jesus told his followers that in helping the one in need they were at the same time helping him. In contrast, Confucian symbolism sees the king’s job as representing the will of the divine (Heaven) on earth. It is by way of the king that the people are connected to the source of all that is good. Therefore, in serving the king one serves the people. Based on these different understandings of the symbolism of the king, Christians tend to pay more attention to helping individual persons when they practice charity, whereas Confucians are more inclined to take political action. In order to understand charity as found in Christianity and Confucianism my thesis is a comparative-historical study focusing on two representative examples from modern history: Dorothy Day (founder of the Catholic Worker Movement in New York City) and Tan Si Tong (social reformer and martyr). First, I examine how their religious traditions interpret charity; then, I demonstrate how each tradition influences the expression of charity. By means of this comparative-historical study, we also deepen our understanding of the universal religious theme of charity. There are four chapters in my thesis: the first chapter offers the motives underlying this research, the meaning of charity in both Christianity and Confucianism, a brief introduction to Dorothy Day and Tan Si Tong, plus methodological explanations. The following two chapters focus first on Dorothy Day and then on Tan Si Tong, especially the religious origins and expression of their acts of charity. Some reflections about the religious theme of charity and the important symbol of the king conclude the thesis.

Johnson, Kathleen Carlton Ph D. "Radical social activism, lay Catholic women and American feminism, 1920-1960." Thesis, 2006. http://hdl.handle.net/10500/1198.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation describes a movement I am calling Radical Social Activism that flourished among Catholic women between the years 1920-1960. The Catholic women participating did not abandon their Church's teachings on women but worked within the androcentric Catholic Church to achieve some lasting results as Radical Social Activists. This Radical Social Activism worked in the lives of Dorothy Day, Maisie Ward, and Dorothy Dohen, three women who retained a firm attachment to the Catholic faith and who would not align themselves with the incipient feminism of the times, but who, nevertheless, strove for social change and justice without regard for political or social recognition. Their work was radical because they were not complacent with the status quo and worked to change it. Their work was social because they ignored Church politics and reached outside their individual egos. And their work was definitely action oriented in that they practiced their beliefs rather than simply preach them. Few Catholic women were involved with the early women's Suffragist movement; the overwhelming majority did not participate in mainstream feminism, in part due to their immigrant background. Women stepped out of the family setting and into active roles in a society that increasingly measured success in terms of economic well being. These role changes produced trade offs in terms of how the family was viewed and it de-emphasized society's spiritual well being. Some of the issues and solutions for women in modern society collided with moral and ethical teachings of the Roman Catholic Church. I have selected three such women who responded with Radical Social Activism, and participated in the American Catholic Church, however, they did not participate in the general feminism of the times. These women, Dorothy Day, Maisie Ward, and Dorothy Dohen, represented in their Radical Social Activism, a feminism of the spirit, as it were, while still remaining within the structure and Magisterium of the Church proper. As women moved into secular society, they made compromises concerning their duties and responsibilities to family. Issues of divorce, birth control, and abortion became popular remedies that helped limit family duties and responsibilities. However, the Catholic Church has always viewed these as problematical and theological challenges to Catholic teaching and has consistently refuted the expediency of these solutions on moral grounds. Yet, if the Church's view on women limits women as feminists have claimed, it did not stop Day, Dohen, and Ward from participating and changing the secular world around them, while still remaining loyal to the teachings of the Catholic Church.

Van, der Walt Johanna Dorothea. "Das Heldenkonzept in Heinrich Bölls Romanen / Johanna Dorothea van der Walt." Thesis, 1986. http://hdl.handle.net/10394/16310.

Full text
Abstract:
Heinrich Boll's epic was mainly influenced by the Second World War as well as by the fact that as a young man he. was forced to serve in the German Army. Consequently he personally experienced the violence and destruction of the war. In his work he endeavours to find a counterbalance for the atrocities the German people are accused of. The counter - reaction of Boll's heroes is elaborated in various ways. Some agitate explicitly against the war and the propaganda system. Others are not capable of associating themselves with their present position - they heap reproach onto the flourishing community, the consumer community ("Konsum-gesellschaft") and the moral decadence of their time. With sensitive awareness of the human subconscious, Boll analyses the reaction of his heroes in existing situations and circumstances. Because war is the phenomenon which has generally influenced Heinrich Boll and thus constitutes the moulding factor in his epic works, his works are divided into war, immediately post-war and restoration literature. Although the hero concept is simulated in various ways in each of his works, it is clear that Boll's heroes are desperate, suffering, helpless and mostly passive heroes. They are not all worthy of imitation and are regarded as 'refuse'. Due to their characters and mode of conduct, Boll's heroes are divided into various categories: the passive hero, the fatherless, the escapers from reality, the lam and buffalo figures, the outsiders and the modern man in bandaged. A typology of Boll's heroes has been established on the grounds of the reception-aesthetically founded hermeneutical model of H.R. Jauss. This model consists of five identification modalities: modality of associative, admirable, sympathetic, cathartic and ironic identification. Boll's heroes are typical of the latter three modalities of identification. Finally the research and survey of this dissertation have proved the excellence of Heinrich Boll as a person and a poet who has always concerned himself with his country and environment. This dissertation covers merely a fraction of Heinrich Boll's extensive and excellent output, leaving a wide field still to be researched.
