The fin-to-limb transition was marked by the origin of digits and the loss of dermal fin rays. Paleontological research into this transformation has focused on the evolution of the endoskeleton, with little attention paid to fin ray structure and function. To address this knowledge gap, we study the dermal rays of the pectoral fins of 3 key tetrapodomorph taxa—Sauripterus taylori (Rhizodontida), Eusthenopteron foordi (Tristichopteridae), and Tiktaalik roseae (Elpistostegalia)—using computed tomography. The rock-dwelling cichlids (mbuna) of Lake Malawi have undergone an explosive evolution, giving rise to an assemblage of 300-500 species within the last one million years. Most widespread mbuna 'species' are characterized by the presence of local endemic populations, differing primarily in coloration and often of uncertain taxonomic rank. The recency and rapidity of speciation within the mbuna have led to difficulties in reconstructing an accurate species-level phylogeny, in turn limiting our ability to elucidate the evolutionary dynamics associated with divergence of coloration and other char

Abstract Most readers must have seen a brown trout, if only as one about to be cooked or eaten. They should have noted several features that facilitate manoeuvrability and sustained swimming (Fig. 1.1): a streamlined body covered with overlapping scales; single dorsal and anal fins to prevent rolling and yawing; paired pectoral and pelvic fins to prevent rolling and pitching and to act as brakes; and a well-developed, symmetrical tail that provides the thrust for swimming. Like other members of the salmon family, the trout has a small, fleshy fin posterior to the dorsal fin.
