Abstract:
The concept of the centaur, symbolizing the fusion of human and machine intelligence, has intrigued visionaries for decades. Recent advancements in artificial intelligence have made this concept not only realizable but also actionable. This synergistic partnership between natural and artificial intelligence promises superior outcomes by leveraging the strengths of both entities. Tracing its origins back to early pioneers of human–computer interaction in the 1960s, such as J.C.R. Licklider and Douglas Engelbart, the idea initially manifested in centaur chess but faced challenges as technologica

The integration of ICT is the apparent goal of range of educational initiatives worldwide. To date, however, the impact of ICTs has lagged behind the rhetoric. Rather than technology transforming teaching and learning it appears that teachers often assimilate it into existing practices. This chapter uses Douglas Engelbart’s (1992) notion of an improvement infrastructure to explore and explain the factors that have framed and shaped New Zealand teacher access to, adoption of, and resistance to the use of laptops. The introduction sketches a history for what the book calls the graphical field. That history moves from Lillian Gilbreth’s work on home management in the early twentieth century, to Herbert Bayer’s and Allon Schoener’s postwar exhibition design, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s “Harlem on My Mind” exhibition, and finally to Douglas Engelbart’s work in the late sixties on the early graphical interface of the personal computer.
