Hautbout, Isabelle. ""Un prédicateur laïque" : didactisme et doute dans la création littéraire d'Alfred de Vigny." Amiens, 2012. http://www.theses.fr/2012AMIE0015.
Full textThough Alfred de Vigny believes that a philosophical literature is crucial to keep the essential ideals of Humanism alive, especially in times of spiritual crisis, he is anxious and cautious mind, thus holding in check the romantic vision of writers as literary ministers. That dual propensity to teach and to doubt makes Vigny's writing nuanced, ambiguous, giving rise to multiple interpretations. As a result, Vigny's works invite us to doubt, not only metaphysical truths, but, more radically, perceptions of the reality and the way one puts them into words. Vigny's ethics and aethetics thus harmonise in his literary works, reflecting the limitations of mankind but spurring empwering critical thinking

Full textIn emile zola's work, our research studies the belief as a privileged theme in the nineteenth century (specially in the books of gabriel tarde). We first investigate the litterary process of "make-believe" and the effect of reality as developed in the twenty novels of the cycle : indeed the goal of realistic (or naturalistic) text is to try to create an illusion of reality. Our research, further on, goes to the very heart of the novels, in the development of the stories of the rougon-macquart. This involves here the relationships between the various characters, actions of those who believe or do not believe (or believe more or less) what others say (or say they do), and who express their point of view in the texts. This makes them a part of the wider issue of beliefs in various fields (scientific, religious, daily life. . . ). The analysis of "beliefs, debts and credulities" in the novels of the cycle is also based on the study of the subjects treated by the author. The first considered subject is science which, in the later part of the nineteenth century, became of interest to the general public instead of being a specialists' debate. The numerous scientific discoveries (medical, biological. . . ) exert a fascination on emile zola, who will base the litterary writting of the rougon-macquart on a scientific credo, notably defended by his. "spokesman" in the cycle, doctor pascal rougon. We then look at the issue of religion and the opposition between "belief" and "knowledge", subject of many debates in the nineteenth century. The last part ("credit, debts and information") considers the issue of manipulation and power : belief is here developed in some specific narrative themes, as well as it leads to the creation of specific characters

Full textThis work takes up its substance and strength in demonstrating that meal time, in maghrebin litterature, is not only a powerful diegetic factor, able to permeate and/or buffthe boarders between appetite and memory, knowledges and flavors, identity and alterity. It is also and above all a way of mending, through the virtues of the very act of eating, the historical, social and psychological fractures which have marked the north african countries. Thus, the possibility of starting an analysis as broad as possible, aiming at the real sensitive points of the maghrebin Iitterary production: ethnographic description, autobiography, humour, textual modernity, collective or individual history, immigration, multiculturalism. It also reaches a suprasensible dimension, where the individual is merging with his surroundings. The studied corpus is considering the works of Feraoun, Dib, Boumahdi, Boudjedra, Bouraoui, Binebine, Chraïbi, Bénabou, Laroui, Fellag, Alloula et Khaïr-Eddine

Full textThis thesis revisits the debates concerning the unspeakable and explores the problematic relation between fiction and testimony in Holocaust Literature. The literary analysis of the works written by Elie Wiesel, La nuit and Le crépuscule, au loin, and by Imre Kertész, Être sans destin and Le chercheur de traces, brings to light a renewed definition of literary testimony and of bearing witness which includes factual and fictional elements. Furthermore, the main purpose of this thesis is to demonstrate that the horrific experiences of the Holocaust can in fact be effectively transmitted and brought to life through literature, contrary to common notion of the unspeakable. These writers do not speak of the Holocaust in the most transparent and direct way, rather different narrative strategies to represent the Holocaust are put to use. The narrative works of Wiesel and Kertész reveal a hesitation and an uncertainty that illustrates the presence of doubt related to the perceived reality of the Holocaust. The objective of this study is to explore the different ways in which the rapport between testimony and truth are weakened and to provide specific examples to demonstrate the distance of testimony from truth. Doubt is seen as the most prominent example in revealing how the obligation of truth in testimony is fading. This analysis of doubt will illustrate how these narratives are much less testimonies of the lived reality rather testimonies expressing doubt of the perceived reality.
Alphand, Véronique. "L'univers imaginaire de Marie Noël." Clermont-Ferrand 2, 1988. http://www.theses.fr/1988CLF20017.
Full textMarie noel's imaginary universe lies upon four main axes, four obsessive themes: childhood, love, space and time. Childhood mentioned on several occasions allows to bring to mind marie noel's own childhood and to perceive the first signs of her artistic gifts. Marie noel follows tradition when she describes love; however she often attempts to part from that tradition, for example when she joins her christian outlook to the theme. Marie noel's works gradually build up an original space, in which the places fit for happiness and the places in which unhappiness prevails inexorably face each other. A tragic note appears in marie noel's works when she comes to write about time : it is always thought of tragically; it always brings misfortune. The vision of heraclitean stream betrays this obsession of unhappiness linked to time, the obsession of the precarous human condition. The "noelian" being, deprived of any feeling of safety, wonders apprehensively: "who am i in this world in which all things pass away?" moreover, time leads to death and the author, in her very first works, rebels against fate. Her cry of revolt darkens her universe

Full textThis study concerns all the texts published in the parisian "literary" press from 1944 to 1960 and relating to belgium, focusing on french-written and dutch-written literary productions. By considering them products of discursive practices, the study aims to detect the principles of organization and classification of belgian productions in relation to french productions, which leads one to question the social use of literature in both france and belgium. The theory of fields contributes to ap- prehend in an appropriate way the practices under study. The analyzed texts are "prises de position" mediating certain principles peculiar to the literary field and to the field of "literary" press. First, the three weeklies are located in the latter. Then, each forms the subject of an analysis focusing on general texts on (an aspect of) belgium, then on (meta)texts taken from literary columns, taking into account the recognition of (national) specificities, the editorial programme and the genders. Finally, the discourses of belgian contributors are studied with respect to their trajectories and to the logics of the french fields involved. The entire corpus is marked by the dominated status of the belgian francophone "literature". The french texts are codetermined by a universalist and humanist vision on (french) culture, peculiar to french fields. Each weekly's position brings about aesthetical and political divergences. The belgian contributors deny or avoid bringing out an own identity

Full textWhy should decadence be studied in Suetonius' Vitae Caesarum since this notion usually characterizes a latest period in Roman History ? In order to understand this period beginning with Julius Caesar and endind with Domitianius, Suetoniu's work seems to be a landmark in the history period in which a feeling of decline is perceived. Our method starts with the study of the emperors' personalities : it contains semantic analyses relying on comparaisons between various latin and greek authors. Furthermore, the study of decline theoreticians will enrich our thinking. The first part is focused on the daily lives of the Caesars in the palace. The second one ensues from it : this life reveals that an unlimited power creates behavioural troubles. But the emperors are presented by a writer, that implies a third esthetic part : because the way we perceive the Caesars relies on a stylistic work displaying the characteristics of a narration ending with a moral. Consequently how do we end up perceiving the Caesars ?
Louis, Stella. "Faire croire aux vampires, des écrits (XVIIIe-XIXe siècles) aux images cinématographiques (XXe-XXIe siècles)." Thesis, Sorbonne université, 2018. http://www.theses.fr/2018SORUL039.
Full textVampirism is a word and a speech circulating: it is a writing that contaminates and that is transmitted from text to text, from history to history, from image to image. The vampire is an empty form, an open and dissected corpse in the great era of vampirism (the eighteenth century), and that imagination, collective or individual, has filled with fiction(s) in perspective and / or desire to “make believe” the vampires, even when it is to questioning their existence.Images come together to make the vampire and realize it, and circulate according to the “vampiric” principle of contamination. A vampiric form in the sense of a formal writing is repeated from the eighteenth and nineteenth century to the last cinematographic images, and still according to the same principle which consists in questioning the belief of a receiver: a reader or a spectator. The purpose of this thesis is mainly to highlight and study the identity of belief in eighteenth-century vampires with the viewer’s belief in front of a vampire movie. Its purpose is to study the genesis and the literary and cinematographic variations of a formal writing of the belief in vampires and vampirism, in a body of official, critical, literary and cinematographic texts. All these documents offer a narrative that constructs discursive forms that make people believe and doubt, especially for aesthetic purposes, pleasure, horror, fear, fascination. This is the story that the thesis proposes to explore
Pettersson, Fredrik. "Le fantastique dans Le Spectre large de Gérard Prévot : Une analyse basée sur la théorie de Tzvetan Todorov." Thesis, Linnéuniversitetet, Institutionen för språk (SPR), 2018. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:lnu:diva-79278.
Full textThis thesis is centred on the fantastic features in Le Spectre Large by Gérard Prévot (1975) and subsequently on a comparison with the features from another collection by Prévot, La Nuit du Nord (1974), studied by Ricci in 1993. The analysis is based on Tzvetan Todorov’s theory of the fantastic, which puts its emphasis on the hesitation whether the enigmatic phenomena has its origins in the natural (uncanny) or the supernatural (marvellous) world. The research of Prévot’s literary work is interesting given that, compared to other Belgian fantastic writers such as Jean Ray or Thomas Owen, Gérard Prévot is still rather unknown and not much studied. With regard to the results, it is found that the stories have a mixed qualities in relation to fantastic theory. In the better tales, the fantastic is born out of a narration with a limited point of view and a vague and sometimes unknown narrator. It is also born out of the plot which introduces the disruptive elements at the very last page. When comparing the corpus with Ricci’s study (1993), several common features are found, but also a few differences. Prévot has written the two books using a similar vocabulary and the stories often take place in related environments – the North, a place with mysterious connotations. A fantastic which Ricci calls “social” can also be found in both collections. The main point of difference between the books is the narration. While the narrator in La Nuit du Nord has an omniscient status, the one in Le Spectre Large is clearly limited and anonymous.
