Abstract:
A Review of: Hilton, J. III, & Wiley, D. (2010). The short-term influence of free digital versions of books on print sales. Journal of Electronic Publishing, 13(1). Objective – To determine whether the availability of free digital versions of books impacts print sales. Design – Quantitative data comparison. Setting – University Instructional Psychology Department. Subjects – A total of 41 books, each with a free digital version and a traditional print version. Methods – This study used Nielson BookScan data to track print book sales during a 16-week period, 8 weeks before a free digital version of the book became available and 8 weeks after the availability of the free digital version. The authors tracked 41 books and organized them into four categories. The first included 7 nonfiction books, the second consisted of 5 science fiction/fantasy books, the third included 5 science fiction/fantasy books released together by Random House, and the fourth group consisted of 24 science fiction/fantasy books released by Tor Books. The books released by Tor Books, unlike the other books in the study, were available by free download only if a person registered for Tor’s newsletter and the downloads were only available for one week. When a free digital book from any of the other three groups was released, it remained available for several weeks, and more often, indefinitely. Main Results – Combined print sales of the nonfiction titles in the first group increased 5% after the release of a free digital copy. The majority of the science fiction/fantasy books in the second group also had an increase in post-free release sales, with a combined increase of 26%. The combined sales of the Random House titles increased by 9% after the release of the free digital versions. However, in stark contrast to the results of the first three groups, the fourth group of Tor books had a combined decrease in print sales of 18%. While the authors were not able to explain this difference with certainty, they point out that the Tor model for releasing the free digital books (making the free books available for only one week and requiring registration in order to download the books) was substantially different from the models used by the other publishers. Conclusion – The study suggests a positive relationship may exist between free digital books and short-term print sales. However, the availability of free digital books did not always lead to increased print sales. The authors acknowledge a number of factors not fully accounted for, including the timing of the free digital release, the promotion it received, and the differences in the size of the audiences for the various books studied. Ultimately, however, the authors believe the data indicates that when free digital books are offered for a period of time longer than a week, without requiring registration, print sales will increase.

Abstract:
The article analyzes characteristic features and development logic of the library project by Google, which started from the famous Google Book Search project (also known as Google Books and Google Print), and later as Google Play Books within the multi-platform multimedia service Google Play. For decades, a constant trend of the corporation’s activity has been the development and testing of new social and communication models in working with users, combining the complexity and global reach of the audience with the use of its interactive potential. In the early 2000s, the company initiated mass scanning of library collections, thus starting the development of a new institutional paradigm for electronic libraries. Later, having developed new business models for the distribution of electronic copies of printed products in the course of numerous legal proceedings on charges of copyright infringement, it also pioneered the new information market development. From the very beginning, Google Book Search was aimed at the mass user, which was facilitated by its constantly expanding set of options and increasing level of comfort of access to the resource. In 2006—2010, the service presented an opportunity for users to download, in pdf format, books free of copyright law; a new viewing interface “About this book” was added; an opportunity to operate texts using “My library” option was provided; a mobile version of the service was launched; access to statistical information on diachronic frequency dynamics of word usage based on the collected database was provided. The article analyzes the further development of the library project within the Google Play Books service, which allows users to read, buy and sell e-books, use bookmarks, download their own books in pdf and EPUB formats, and synchronize data on all user’s devices. There is assessed the social significance of the project in the context of the global electronic civilization development.

Abstract:
Malay martial arts is often associated with the practice that contains elements of superstitions. This can be seen when religious authorities such as the Department of Islamic Development Malaysia or popularly known as (JAKIM) and Selangor Islamic Religious Department (JAIS) published guideline books for martial arts associations in Malaysia according to Islam. Therefore, there is a martial arts association in Malaysia, namely Persatuan Seni Silat Cekak Malaysia (PSSCM) have a clear vision of upholding the original Malay Silat, especially Malaysian martial arts, and clean from all superstitions which are not align with the Islamic faith. Therefore, the approach of this study is to identify the ideology of spiritual practices found in PSSCM that are free from superstitions and capable of educating morals and noble practices. This study uses a qualitative methodology based on content analysis and this study will analyze documents related to the ideology of spiritual practice in PSSCM. The study found that PSSCM has an ideology of spiritual practices that are aimed at educating the spiritual and the virtuous. This practice also does not conflict with the Islamic Shariᶜa. Therefore, PSSCM is not merely educating people to take care of themselves but also signaling them with good moral characters.

Abstract:
From books to movies, the media is now flush with spiritual and wellness tourist-related images, films, and fiction (which are primarily produced in the West) about Southeast Asia. Combined with the positive effects of spiritual practices, greater numbers of tourists are travelling to Southeast Asia for mindfulness, yoga, and other spiritual pursuits. Influenced by popular mass media coverage, such as Hollywood movies and literary bestsellers like Eat Pray Love (2006) and tourism imaginaries about particular peoples and places, spiritual tourists are visiting Southeast Asia in increasing numbers. They travel to learn about and practice mindfulness, so as to recharge their batteries, achieve spiritual fulfillment, enhance their spiritual well-being, and find a true self. However, there is a notable lack of scholarly work around the nature and outcomes of spiritual tourism in the region. Owing to its Buddhist temples, cultural heritage, religious history, infrastructure, and perceived safety, Chiang Mai in Thailand, in particular, has become a major spiritual tourism destination. Based on participant observation including informal conversations, and 10 semi-structured interviews in Chiang Mai during two summers in 2016 and 2018, our research explored why Western tourists travel to Chiang Mai to engage in mindfulness practices regardless of their religious affiliation. We explored their faith in their spiritual practice in Chiang Mai. Rather than the faith implied in religion, this faith refers to trust or confidence in something. Interestingly, none of the informants identified themselves as Buddhist even though many had practiced Buddhist mindfulness for years. They had faith that mindfulness would resolve problems, such as depression and anxiety, following life events such as divorces, deaths in family, drug abuse, or at least help free them from worries. They noted that mindfulness practices were a constructive means of dealing with negative life events. This study found that the informants sought to embed mindfulness and other spiritual practices into the fabric of their everyday life. Their faith in mindfulness led them to a destination where Buddhist heritage, history, and culture are concentrated but also consumed. Whilst discussing the preliminary findings through a critical lens, the research recommends future research pathways.

Abstract:
The interest that modern human science shows in the Enlightenment as time still continues and has become one of the reasons to examine the periodicals of the 1760s and 1770s as part of its complex social and cultural process. Separating a specific cul-tural practice for analysis allowed concentrating on identifying some anthropological senses in cultural changes and some ways of coping with current conflicts. The author of the article observes how the magazines that are identified as satirical (Truten’, Zhivopisets, Vsyakaya Vsyachina, Adskaya Pochta, Smes’, and others) make a dialogue between the book and reading. The significance of this topic is the early discussion on the problem of educating the nobility that was held in the society. In the 1760s and 1770s, the topic became popular in a new way because of the ideas of Catherine the Great to educate people “of a new brand”. To solve the problem, the government started to reor-ganize educational institutions whose programs began to include secular science, books and art. However, home schooling remained closed for changes. There, medieval spiritual books still dominated because “aunties”-tutors (so-called “starushki”) were afraid of any cultural innovations. The well-known thesis that, in the second part of the century, the authority of medieval texts became weaker is proved by different magazine articles that were based on the daily experience and examinations of contemporaries who were the witnesses of the cultural changes and who had to choose what to read, where and how to teach their children. In publications of different genres, we can notice that the press con-tinued to value the book and reading as a good way to learn and educate. Besides, medie-val texts appeared to be something that favored superstitious views on the Universe. In the then contemporary satirical ideas, medieval books marked the changing generation of readers. Some examples of parents’ sanctimonious views on religious beliefs, disrespect towards governmental rules, cruel treatment of serfs degraded the value of reading medie-val books. On the contrary, positive heroes showed interest in the new secular knowledge and books, tried to become well-read and study foreign languages, to be capable of making a free choice. To bring up such a noble person was only possible if their parents were thoughtful to their children’s natural proclivity and to the choice of their tutors, and were sensitive to governmental changes. Generations that could stop reading Old Russian books were changing their reading habits. They became free in choosing books and in reading them critically. The trend to be well-read made reading more dynamic.

Abstract:
189 Background: Family members will carry the memory of the death of their loved-one with them for the rest of their lives. If they perceive their loved-one suffered as they died there is a risk they will develop Post Traumatic Stress Disorder or other psychological dysfunctions. It is crucial the family be educated and holistically supported during the dying process. Health care providers and care givers require information that will enable them to act as patient advocates and work effectively with families toward the common goal of a peaceful death. Resources that provide basic explanations, suggestions for care, open communication, and prepare families and care givers about the dying process are essential. Methods: Final Journey is a patient and family centric booklet developed based on the CARES tool, which is a guide to help medical teams better care for the dying and their family. CARES stands for comfort, airway, restlessness and delirium, emotional and spiritual support, and self-care. Final Journey details in each section what patients and families may experience, helps families understand what constitutes suffering, and suggests what families can do to help their loved ones. Results: There is a need for education tools that are easily understood, pertinent, and made accessible to help improve the dying experience for all parties involved. Final Journey helps assure families are informed and more emotionally prepared. Furthermore, the booklet expands the available resources available to medical providers, allowing them to more effectively address the challenges of caring for the dying. Final Journey will be available as a free download from the Department of Supportive Care Medicine website. Conclusions: We anticipate utilization of the Final Journey booklet will improve knowledge and understanding for health care providers, care givers, and families regarding a normal dying process and how to distinguish this from suffering, provide them suggestions on how to offer support and comfort during the dying process, promote communication between health care providers, care givers, and families of dying patients and supply resources and information on the importance of self-care when working with a dying patient.

Abstract:
Alexander Carmichael’s compendium of Gaelic prayers, blessings, and charms, Carmina Gadelica, is one of the most remarkable Scottish art-books of its time, and a fundamental source for the Celtic Christianity movement. It is also exceptionally controversial, given that the evidence of his field notebooks suggests that during the editing process Carmichael and his circle adapted, reworked, and rewrote his originally oral sources for the printed page. Looking beyond debates over authenticity and forgery, this chapter offers broader nineteenth-century contexts in which to situate Carmichael’s magnum opus. Carmina Gadelica is clearly inspired by contemporary political, religious, and cultural developments: the controversies of the 1880s Crofters War; the project of spiritual reinvigoration envisaged by the fin de siècle ‘Celtic Renascence’ movement; and the ferocious Lowland–Highland disputes that eventually sundered the Free Church of Scotland in 1900, the year in which Carmina was eventually published. Another influence was the liturgical, devotional, and aesthetic ideals of High Church Tractarianism as mediated through Carmichael’s Episcopalian wife, Mary Frances MacBean. In Carmina Gadelica, the Oxford Movement met Catholic Hebridean piety, allowing Carmichael to delineate an alternative, pre-Reformation portrait of traditional, communal Highland religiosity as a riposte to contemporary stereotypes of intolerant evangelicalism, strict Sabbatarianism, and uncompromising biblical literalism.

Abstract:
The growing popularity of mobile devices, coupled with the ever-increasing number of high-quality e-books available for free download is causing a re-examination of core curriculum and instructional philosophies. Perhaps the most - making “great books” programs available and accessible - newly interesting, despite misgivings and political correctness of the last few decades. Distance learning via mobile devices, which incorporate some of the techniques of television and film, has made the classics of literature available and allowed people to have access to classics at a very low cost. At the same time, it has re-animated debates about the nature of study of comparative literature in a globalized world.

Abstract:
Even the mere mention of "transplantation of human body parts" is reason enough to deal with this topic for who knows how many times. Quite simply, we need to discuss the topics discussed from time to time !? Let's get down to explaining some of the "hot" life issues that arise in connection with them. To, perhaps, determine ourselves in a different way according to the existing solutions ... to understand what a strong dynamic has gripped the world we live in, colored our attitudes with a different color, influenced our thoughts about life, its values, altruism, selflessness, charities. the desire to give up something special without thinking that we will get something in return. Transplantation of human organs and tissues for therapeutic purposes has been practiced since the middle of the last century. She started (of course, in a very primitive way) even in ancient India (even today one method of transplantation is called the "Indian method"), over the 16th century (1551). when the first free transplantation of a part of the nose was performed in Italy, in order to develop it into an irreplaceable medical procedure in order to save and prolong human life. Thousands of pages of professional literature, notes, polemical discussions, atypical medical articles, notes on the margins of read journals or books from philosophy, sociology, criminal literature ... about events of this kind, the representatives of the church also took their position. Understanding our view on this complex and very complicated issue requires that more attention be paid to certain solutions on the international scene, especially where there are certain permeations (some agreement but also differences). It's always good to hear a second opinion, because it puts you to think. That is why, in the considerations that follow, we have tried (somewhat more broadly) to answer some of the many and varied questions in which these touch, but often diverge, both from the point of view of the right regulations and from the point of view of medical and judicial practice. times from the perspective of some EU member states (Germany, Poland, presenting the position of the Catholic Church) on the one hand, and in the perspective of other moral, spiritual, cultural and other values - India and Iraq, on the other.

Abstract:
This report summarizes the primary output of this project, a book of COVID-era street reconfiguration case studies called Rethinking Streets During COVID-19: An Evidence-Based Guide to 25 Quick Redesigns for Physical Distancing, Public Use, and Spatial Equity. COVID-era needs have accelerated the process that many communities use to make street transformations due to: a need to remain physically distanced from others outside our immediate household; a need for more outdoor space close to home in every part of every community to access and enjoy; a need for more space to provide efficient mobility for essential workers in particular; and a need for more space for local businesses as they try to remain open safely. This project is the third in a series of NITC-supported case study books on best practices in street reconfigurations for more active, sustainable, and in this case, COVID-supportive uses. The full, 154-page book is available for free download from the National Institute for Transportation and Communities (NITC).
