We present new stylized facts on the underlying reasons of US hospitality and tourism firms’ fluctuating levels of financial leverage during the period 1990–2015 using comprehensive micro- and macro-level accounting data overtime. To characterize this puzzling phenomenon, we quantified firm-specific and macroeconomic parameters and a diverse set of leverage proxies at various time frames with various structures. We further took account of the recent economic upheaval in our analyses so that we can compare firms’ leverage behavior as “before” and “after” the major economic turmoil in 2007–2009

We estimate the effects of house price changes on young-firm employment shares and industry-level employment growth in local economies. A novel test shows that house price effects on local economies work through wealth, liquidity, and collateral effects on the propensity to start new firms and expand young ones. My short narrative film Passed Down follows three generations of men in a family: a son, a father and a grandfather. Composed of four short scenes, the film focuses on the three characters as they work through issues of masculinity, passed down from one generation to the next. My film suggests that this cultural sharing is part of a much larger set of social boundaries that help define what it is to "be a man". These scenes reflect my own personal experience with this phenomenon, as a son and as a father myself.

We show that capital controls (CC), by slowing-down firm debt-growth in the boom, improve firm performance during crises. Exploiting a tax on foreign-currency (FX) debt inflows in Colombia before the Global Financial Crisis (GFC) and multiple firm-level and loan-level administrative datasets, we find that CC reduce FX-debt inflows.
