Abstract:
Thesis(M. Med (Anaesthesiology)--University of Limpopo(Medunsa Campus), 2010.
The purpose of this study was to interrogate the clinical relevance and cost effectiveness of the routine preoperative chest X-rays at DGMH. It was conducted as a descriptive cross-sectional prospective study of radiographic films in the Radiology department. A review of patients’ files and chest X-rays performed during a 6-month period from January to June 2008. Data from 100 patients’ files were included in the analysis. The age of patients ranged from 45 to 84years, the median age was 57years. The majority of patients younger than 50years were female, while the majority of male patients were over 50years. From a total of 100 patients only 8%(8 patients) were deemed unfit and consequently postponed or cancelled for further investigation and optimization. The cost for performing one routine chest X-ray was estimated to be R393 manpower, time and film inclusive, the total costs for the 100 patients included in this study being R39300. This study has provided some evidence that the routine preoperative chest X-rays can help in uncovering some abnormalities that were not apparent on clinical examination, it has pointed out that the impact of these uncovered abnormalities is very minimal on the planned surgery and that the costs associated with doing routine pre-operative chest X-rays can be substantial.

The aim of this study was to infer the bone mineral density (BMD) from the radiographic image (X-X) with reference to the BMD of an aluminum step wedge measured by absorptiometry Dual-energy (DXA). For this we used 30 samples of cortical bone 30 and cancellous bone tissue samples of bovine bone "in vitro". Were measured in this study Bone Mineral Density (BMD), bone mineral content (BMC) both obtained by densitometer LUNAR® DPX-ALPHA; Volume Bone Mineral (QMO) mass of ash after calcination of the samples; the real density of the samples (dReal = mass / volume). 10 taken RX were made with the samples 60, interspersed by aluminum step wedge (densitometric reference). The correlation between the techniques (gray DR-tones and DXA g / cm 2) generated regression equations for each of the ten X-rays and allowed to infer bone mineral density (DMODR) obtained by converting grayscale radiographic density by ImageJ® for each of the 10 radiographic taken. It was then calculated average bone mineral density calculated by X-ray densitometry (XDMODR) radiographs of all ten. Was observed that the average true density of the samples was 2.2±0.23g/cm2 and 1.05±0.09g/cm2 while the average density measured by DXA was 0.73±0.11g/cm2 and 0.22±0.11g/cm2 interesting that the average DMODR was 0.93±0.11g/cm2 and 0.34±0.14g/cm2 for cortical and cancellous bone respectively. The average of the BMC was 0.19±0.08g and 0.9±0.02g, and the average QMO 0.14±0.04g and 0.05±0 03g for cortical and cancellous bone respectively. It was possible to obtain good determination coefficients between all variables: BMC and QMO, R2 = 0.747; BMD and dReal with R2 = 0.765; dReal and DMODR; BMD and XDMODR respectively 0.764 and 0.856. For correlations were used two samples of cortical and cancellous bone tissues, suggesting a difference between the samples with the methodologies used.

Full text
Abstract:

ENGLISH ABSTRACT
This thesis wishes to go deeply into both aspects of Dr. César Comas Llabería (Barcelona, 1874-1956) personality: Photography and Radiology.

Dr. Comas was a Barcelona citizen who spent more than 50 days of his life studying, practicing and divulging Radiology.

Comas felt attracted by Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen X Ray Discovery, so he tried to reach the same. He was still a student of the last year of Medicine and he had been the Faculty Photographer for four years. His fondness for the Electrotherapy studies -on what he wanted to work after getting the Degree- and his important position in the Photography Cabinet helped him experiment with this new technique and made him be considered the first X Ray user in Spain.

He developed two activities through his life: the first as a vocation, Medicine, which made him deserve National and International recognition. The second as an amateur, Photography, which is collected in a large amount of documentary images of the life, customs and growth of Barcelona from 1900 to 1925.

César Comas was a generous man. He worked for free in several Hospitals and he handed over his own Radiology Cabinet -He and his cousin Agustí Prió opened their own Cabinet in Barcelona in 1898- to the Hospitals which couldn't afford it. As no one knew the X Ray harmful influence on the skin, many radiologists like Comas and Prió suffered its consequences.

2779 Photographs make up the Photograph Fund, 419 of them in colour; 2350 in black and white, mostly stereoscopic on glass; 24 panoramic and 90 on acetate.

The thesis is divided in seven parts: First, Biography. Second, The Fund origin and content, mostly Photographs. Third, Documentary Photography. Fourth, Architecture and Testimony. Fifth, Colour Photography with all the processes Comas used: Autochrome, Omnicolore, Dufay and Piaget. Sixth, Radiology. Seventh and last, Comas' Unfair Official Oblivion

Abstract:

Abstract:
Dielectric resonator antenna (DRA) technologies are applicable to a wide variety of mobile wireless communication systems. The principal energy loss mechanism for this type of antenna is the dielectric loss, and then using modern ceramic materials, this may be very low. These antennas are typically of small size, with a high radiation efficiency, often above 95%; they deliver wide bandwidths, and possess a high power handling capability. The principal objectives of this thesis are to investigate and design DRA for low profile personal and nomadic communications applications for a wide variety of spectrum requirements: including DCS, PCS, UMTS, WLAN, UWB applications. X-band and part of Ku band applications are also considered. General and specific techniques for bandwidth expansion, diversity performance and balanced operation have been investigated through detailed simulation models, and physical prototyping. The first major design to be realized is a new broadband DRA operating from 1.15GHz to 6GHz, which has the potential to cover most of the existing mobile service bands. This antenna design employs a printed crescent shaped monopole, and a defected cylindrical DRA. The broad impedance bandwidth of this antenna is achieved by loading the crescent shaped radiator of the monopole with a ceramic material with a permittivity of 81. The antenna volume is 57.0  37.5  5.8 mm3, which in conjunction with the general performance parameters makes this antenna a potential candidate for mobile handset applications. The next class of antenna to be discussed is a novel offset slot-fed broadband DRA assembly. The optimised structure consists of two asymmetrically located cylindrical DRA, with a rectangular slot feed mechanism. Initially, designed for the frequency range from 9GHz to 12GHz, it was found that further spectral improvements were possible, leading to coverage from 8.5GHz to 17GHz. Finally, a new low cost dual-segmented S-slot coupled dielectric resonator antenna design is proposed for wideband applications in the X-band region, covering 7.66GHz to 11.2GHz bandwidth. The effective antenna volume is 30.0 x 25.0 x 0.8 mm3. The DR segments may be located on the same side, or on opposite sides, of the substrate. The end of these configurations results in an improved diversity performance.

Cochran, Tanya R. "Toward a Rhetoric of Scholar-Fandom." Digital Archive @ GSU, 2009. http://digitalarchive.gsu.edu/english_diss/51.

Abstract:
Individuals who consider themselves both scholars and fans represent not only a subculture of fandom but also a subculture of academia. These liminal figures seem suspicious to many of their colleagues, yet they are particularly positioned not only to be conduits to engaged learning for students but also to transform the academy by chipping away at the stereotypes that support the symbolic walls of the Ivory Tower. Because they are growing in number and gaining influence in academia, the scholar-fans of the television series Buffy the Vampire Slayer (Buffy) and other texts by creator Joss Whedon are one focus of this dissertation. Though Buffy academics or Whedon scholars are not the only ones of their kind (e.g., academic- fan communities have cropped up around The Simpsons, The Matrix Trilogy, and the Harry Potter franchise), they have produced more literature and are more organized than any other academic-fan community. I approach all of my subjects—fandom, academia, fan-scholars, and scholar-fans—from a multidisciplinary perspective, employing various methodologies, including autoethnography and narrative inquiry. Taking several viewpoints and using mixed methods best allows me to begin identifying and articulating a rhetoric of scholar-fandom. Ultimately, I claim that Whedon academic-fans employ a discourse marked by intimacy, community, reciprocity, and transformation. In other words, the rhetoric of Whedon scholar-fandom promotes an epistemology—a way of knowing—that in Parker J. Palmer’s paradigm is personal, communal, reciprocal, and transformational.

Abstract:
High-energy X-ray Computed Tomography/Digital Radiography (CT/DR) technologies are being investigated in order to develop a significantly enhanced non-destructive examination (NDE) capability for in-service inspection of flexible risers. Statoil Research Center, in concert with U.S. and European manufacturers, have studied advanced industrial high-energy X-ray, CT/DR, and robotics systems for potential use in offshore oil & gas production facilities. The objective is to adapt these technologies for in-service NDE of flexible risers and end-fittings on FPSO vessels and TLP structures, as well as other configurations. Both topside and sub-sea versions of the device are envisioned. The device will use a miniature electron linear accelerator as the X-ray source. The CT/DR detector consists of an array of photodiodes and signal amplifiers, an advanced computer workstation, and integral robotics used to rotate and translate both the X-ray source and detector array. For topside applications, an external radiation shielding unit will be installed around the system. For sub-sea applications, the X-ray source, detector array and integral robotics will be mounted on a ‘clamping-walking’ robot that attaches to the outside of the flexible riser. The tool is to be installed on the riser by a large Remote Operated Vehicle (ROV), with control logic and power supply provided by cables embedded in the Tether Management System (TMS). Image data captured and transmitted to the workstation are processed, stored and displayed digitally. Reconstructed CT/DR X-ray images generated offshore can be rendered in 2D or 3D display, and transmitted to remote terminals anywhere in the world.

Abstract:
The authors performed a controlled study to compare commercially available amidolytic heparin assays based on anti-Xa or anti-I la systems. All participants (see below) were provided with the same batch of all heparin preparations and reagents including homogenous plasma preparation. In addition plasma was spiked with the various unfractionated (n=2) as well as lmwh- (n=5) and heparinoid preparation (n=l). The four university laboratories analyzed all heparin preparations that are registered or used in clinical trials in FRG (n=8). The two testkit producers analyzed registered heparin preparations and the heparin producer their brand only. The study was recently completed and the data analysed and collected. The first evaluation revealed that the amidolytic anti-I la assay is insensitive for lmwh and heparinoids. Determination of unfractionated heparins is not accurate below 0.5 units of the corresponding standard. The Xa-methods are more sensitive for lmwh and heparinoids, however these methods also reveal a high standard deviation. Estimation of concentrations below 0.5 units of all tested heparin preparations is questionable. The authors are indented for active cooperation to Prof. Dr. K. Andrassy (Med. Univ. In ASME Turbo Expo 2019: Turbomachinery Technical Conference and Exposition. American Society of Mechanical Engineers, 2019. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/gt2019-91522.

Full text
Abstract:
Abstract Heat transfer experiments were done on a flat plate to study the effect of internal counter-flow backside cooling on adiabatic film cooling effectiveness and heat transfer coefficient. In addition, the effects of density ratio (DR), blowing ratio (BR), diagonal length over diameter (L/D) ratio, and Reynolds number were studied using this new configuration. The results are compared to a conventional plenum fed case. Data were collected up to X/D = 23 where X = 0 at the holes, an S/D = 1.65 and L/D = 1 and 2. Testing was done at low L/D ratios since short holes are normally found in double wall cooling applications in turbine components. A DR of 2 was used in order to simulate engine-like conditions and this was compared to a DR of 0.92 since relevant research is done at similar low DR. The BR range of 0.5 to 1.5 was chosen to simulate turbine conditions as well. In addition, previous research shows that peak effectiveness is found within this range. Infrared (IR) thermography was used to capture temperature contours on the surface of interest and the images were calibrated using a thermocouple and data analyzed through MATLAB software. A heated secondary fluid was used as ‘coolant’ in the present study. A steady state heat transfer model was used to perform the data reduction procedure. Results show that backside cooling configuration has a higher adiabatic film cooling effectiveness when compared to plenum fed configurations at the same conditions. In addition, the trend for effectiveness with varying BR is reversed when compared with traditional plenum fed cases. Yarn flow visualization tests show that flow exiting the holes in the backside cooling configuration is significantly different when compared to flow exiting the plenum fed holes. We hypothesize that backside cooling configuration has flow exiting the holes in various directions, including laterally, and behaving similar to slot film cooling, explaining the differences in trends. Increasing DR at constant BR shows an increase in adiabatic effectiveness and HTC in both backside cooling and plenum fed configurations due to the decreased momentum of the coolant, making film attachment to the surface more probable. The effects of L/D ratio in this study were negligible since both ratios used were small. This shows that the coolant flow is still underdeveloped at both L/D ratios. The study also showed that increasing turbulence through increasing Reynolds number decreased adiabatic effectiveness.

Full text
Abstract:
Abstract Tube trailers assembled with large capacity hoop-wrapped composite cylinder of steel liner (i.e., large capacity type 2 tube (LCT2T)) have shown an increasing trend in China. It is an urgent issue to detect nondestructively the defects of cuts, scratches and voids on the composite overwrap, and corrosion, cracks or other defects on the steel liner during their use and manufacturing processes. In this paper, the double-wall single-image technique of X-ray digital radiography (DR) method was studied for the typical defects on the LCT2T by making specimens of cracks and pitting corrosion on the steel liner, as well as cuts, scratches and void defects on the composite overwrap. The optimal penetration parameter was selected based on the identification of image quality indicators (IQI), and the detection sensitivity of the DR method for the typical defects on the LCT2T was obtained. The results showed that the above-mentioned artificial defects were effectively detected with double-wall single-image technique, and this technique had a higher detection sensitivity to longitudinal defects on the composite overwrap of the LCT2T than that to circumferential defects, as well as the detection sensitivity of steel liner defects was higher than that of composite overwrap defects.
