Amid sporting events times of international scope, such as the World Cup soccer and the Olympics in Brazil, changes in urban settings become evident. With the dichotomy between modernity and tradition fostered by arrays of developmentalist ideology, there is a heightened spatial spread of policy interventions by government agencies where low income economic power people have been evacuated from their homes so that they can carry out the construction of large developments. The specific case studied in this research is the residents of the urban agglomeration Poço da Draga located in the vicinity of where it is being built the third largest “ocean museum” in the world, the Acquario Ceará, in Fortaleza, Brazil. With the installation of the project, there is a possibility of removing these residents where they live for over a hundred years. Realizing the urban transformations that have occurred in the area of Iracema Beach, covering the Poço da Draga, is denoted as a tourism promotion linked to development projects cause spatial impacts and, above all, in sociability among people who make up the local populations affected. Because of this, pervades this work an attempt to undertake theoretical reflections on the anthropology of scope that conveys as “development” to realize some complex of interests between the propagators of development projects and the subjects in their specific social contexts, affected by such projects. This work includes an ethnographic study based mainly on testimony of residents of the Poço da Draga.

This research work can be identified as a group of efforts that seeks to make known, to register and to turn public, as the education political-aesthetic of the Fortaleza periphery is constituted, located in the community Poço da Draga; that is known pejoratively as " Favela do Baixa-Pau", has in its backdrop some reflections on the culture of the glance. Residents in the mentioned Community, come to the society and they are seen by her, in the construction attempt for belonging, trying to place this Community in the context of a discussion on periphery and culture; for so much, it tries to bound the theme in the salience of the dynamics sociocultural Fortaleza contemporary. Another subject that this research investigates is the referred Community's residents' resistance, understanding the struggles with the public and private powers, as well as the process of segregation of the segregation, pertinent to the context of " existent poverty" inside of the own Community. This way, we have chosen four sceneries for our inquiry: the school (the classroom, the union, the bathrooms, the corridors), place of the ideas and of the ideals. the house (the architectural construction, the pieces of furniture and the utensils, the prints on the walls, etc),a safe place for the poor people. the street (the leads, the spaces interdicted in the city – incasrs and autdoors funk parties and the shopping malls). the transitory home for all of us; as well as the slum the home of the huts,. And, the body (clothes, seasonings, tattoos, scars, " piercins"), this vehicle of our geo-political-cultural journey.

Full textThe aim of this master s thesis is to examine how is set the socio-spatial segregation process of Poço da Draga Community, in Fortaleza, Brazil, and clear up the socioeconomic dynamics that are manifested in this area, from the 1990s to the present day. From the related concepts, the comprehension of urban formation process of Fortaleza and the points that highlight socio-spatial segregation in this city, we were able to made up the study of the object. In this study, we seek to understand relationship between this community and its environment over time, with special attention to recent decades, when the region becomes a target for public interventions under the discourse of "urban renewal", but incorporating large economic interests. In this scenario emerges some elements that highlight the sociospatial segregation of that community not usually present in official indicators but that is being registered by local news and academic researches, through the eyes of the inhabitants. It is observed, then, that segregation is not only associated to the lack of infrastructure and public services, or even to the precariousness of urban space, but also to the conflicting relations between the segregated areas and the society and also between the community and the government, which ignores two basic principles of urbanism: the dialogue with the population and the promotion of equality and the right to the city .

Full textLa Draga (5320-4800 cal BC) is an Early Neolithic waterlogged site situated at the shore of the Estany de Banyoles (Banyoles Lake). The exceptional preservation conditions allows the conservation of the organic matter, wood also, one of the raw materials most used during prehistory. The production process diagram has been the base for the classification of the woody materials: unworked wood (extraction process), technological debris (extraction and transformation processes), architectonic elements and tools (extraction, transformation and use processes). In order to study those processes different analytics have been implemented: dendrologic, morphometric, experimental, use and technological wear and spatial analysis. For the use and technological wear analysis it have been developed a methodology based on the creation of 3D models obtained with a scanner. This has allowed a detailed characterization of the technological and use wear. This work demonstrates that wood is a material that solves large variety of needs related to the preparation of habitat and working areas, as well as related to the various productive activities that require totally or partially wood elaborated tools. The great diversity of actions involved with the economic activities that have been documented, explain the diversity of tools recovered, demonstrating the versatility of the woody raw material. Livestock, hunting, agriculture, processing of fibers for manufacturing textiles, basketry and rope or wood technology require specialized tools. Its production tries to get the appropriate forms and dimensions, and use raw materials with certain properties. So while the arch requires flexible wood, the pointed stick needs hard and tough wood. Both cases illustrate well the relation between raw material and functionality. Regarding the volume of wood used, constructive activity is the one that required in more quantity. The resulting deforestation was notorious, evidenced by the fall of contemporary oak pollen in the settlement of la Draga. The volume of wood required for making utensils was much smaller and less impactful on the environment, but requires precise selection of raw material because it is the category where a greater variety of taxa, sizes and shapes are found. This work showed how wood was an essential element for the development of the site of la Draga. It is a raw material that affects the everyday basics, both social and economic, being essential for survival. It requires a continuous extraction and involves a very thorough knowledge and mastery of the surrounding woods, the development of social group for its production, processing and consumption, and complex knowledge work for development; practices that affect all aspects of everyday life for the development of the site of la Draga. La Draga is a unique and singular site in the Neolithic of the Iberian Peninsula, but the data can be regarded as significant related to the first farming communities in the NE of the Iberian Peninsula. They had the knowledge and technologies needed to exploit forest resources intensively and according to their needs. La Draga supply documentary evidence related with morphological diversity of wooden products and uses they are given. It also provides unique data about manufacturing processes of wood that until now were only known partially from the lithic tools. It has been possible to make visible processes and products where there is only wood involved.
Revelles, López Jordi. "Mid-Holocene vegetation history, climate change and Neolithic landscape transformation. Archaeopalynology in La Draga and Lake Banyoles (NE Iberian Peninsula)." Doctoral thesis, Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/10803/403759.
Full textLandscape evolution was mostly controlled by climate change until the Neolithisation (after ca. 7.4-7.0 cal ka BP in the Iberian Peninsula) when human impact started to interfere in the natural development of vegetation. Thus, the Neolithisation process involved significant socioeconomic and ecological transformations. Changes in food production, in natural resource management and in settlement patterns originated a new way in which humans and the environment interacted. In that context, archaeoecological evidence obtained by the analyses developed in the framework of this thesis provided relevant data about three main objectives: 1) Vegetation history, climate change and human impact during the Middle Holocene in the Lake Banyoles area; 2) Socio-ecological consequences of Neolithisation in the NE Iberian Peninsula and 3) Potential and contributions of archaeopalynology in lakeside settlement research. This thesis is presented as a compilation of published scientific papers, all based on the application of multi-proxy analysis of both intra-site and off-site deposits in order to reconstruct environmental evolution and Neolithic landscape transformation. The methods applied have been pollen and non-pollen palynomorph (NPP) analysis, macrofossils, sedimentology and sedimentary charcoal analysis, as well as the integration of data from other archaeological and bioarchaeological studies. Broadleaf deciduous forests around Lake Banyoles reached their maximum expansion in the phase 9.0-7.5 cal ka BP, a decline in 7.5-6.5/5.5 cal ka BP, but a recovery afterwards, showing the persistence of oak forests as the dominant vegetation until the Late Holocene. The regression of deciduous forests occurred in the context of the arrival of the first farming societies in the area in 7.27 cal ka BP but also in the context of a cooling phase evidencing the important role of climate change in amplifying the footprint of Neolithic human impact, as well as in settlement dynamics in the Lake Banyoles shore. The practice of intensive farming models during the Early Neolithic, implying small-scale and labour-intensive cultivation, left little evidence of the impact of agriculture in off-site pollen records. While a sustainable small-scale and intensive farming system would have left scarce evidence of the impact of agriculture during the Early Neolithic, the intensive and reiterative exploitation of natural resources associated with permanent settlements led to significant landscape transformation. The archaeopalynological study developed at La Draga was able to obtain relevant data for comprehending site formation processes, the reconstruction of palaeo-environmental evolution and human impact at a local scale and provided new data about socioeconomic practices during the Early Neolithic as well as about the use of space within a pile-dwelling site. This work evidenced the need to carry out spatial analysis in palynological studies at archaeological sites, owing to the spatial heterogeneity of results caused by human impact in terms of soil erosion, arrangement of structures and in the input of plants to the settlement (gathering, cultivation, storage, foddering).

Abstract: The gastrointestinal pathogenic protozoa Cryptosporidium spp. and Giardia spp. are ubiquitous in aquatic environment and their infectious forms (cysts and oocysts) are resistant to environmental conditions (temperature and solar radiation) and the water disinfection process (mainly chlorination). Numerous outbreaks of gastroenteritis were caused by these organisms due to waterborne transmission and these parasitic protozoa have become a constant concern for systems producing water. The aims of this research were: to investigate the occurrence of Giardia cysts and Cryptosporidium oocysts in water samples of Capivari River in two sites identified as CAP1 ( in the plant of water treatment named ETA Capivari) and CAP2 (upstream from the same plant); to evaluate the sediment-water interface in site CAP1, from august 2009 to january 2011, to assess water quality of this source by microbiological and physical-chemical analysis. For parasitological assays, the membrane filter technique according to Franco et al. (2001) was employed followed by visualization by direct immunofluorescence assay (IFA) with commercial monoclonal antibody kit for enumerating cysts and oocysts. For microbiological tests aiming the detection of thermo tolerant coliforms, multiple tubes technique was used according to the procedures described in STANDARD METHODS 21a edition (APHA, AWWA, WEF, 2005). The analysis of the sediment-water interface samples were made by centrifugation and concentration technique through the methodology that uses chemical disaggregation followed by physical-chemical disaggregation using ultrasonic equipment. 36 fresh water samples and 18 sediment-water interface samples were collected. In CAP1 and CAP2 sites, cysts of Giardia were detected in 94,1 % and 100% of the samples, respectively; in sediment-water interface, 94,5 % of the samples presented Giardia cysts. Cryptosporidium oocysts were detected in 6,6 % of the samples from CAP1 site, in 13,3 % samples from CAP2 site and in 16,6 % of the samples from sediment-water interface during all the research. Both protozoa were detected in different samples of the Capivari river
