Abstract:
Madura cattle are indigenous in Madura Island of Indonesia, which are raised for beef/ draught, racing (karapan) and beauty contest (sonok). The purpose of this study is to determine the farmer income of beef/ draught cattle, racing bull and contest cows business in Madura Island, and to determine which business gives the greatest advantage to the farmers. This study involved 240 beef cattle farmers, 135 racing bull farmers and of 145 beauty contest cows farmers from all over Madura Island. An attempt was made to assess the effects of aging, regional differences, and draught load applied on draught potential of Umblachery cattle, an important draught breed of South India. Age had a highly significant effect (p less than 0.01) on all morphometric traits, stride length, and significant effect (p less than 0.05) on pulse rate after work. The middle age group (5.0 to 7.5 years) with more substantial stride length was identified as the critical productive age group for draught ability. Regional differences had a highly significant (p less than 0.01) influence on stride length, horsepo

Crop residues are insufficiently valorised by farmers in western Burkina Faso, while cattle face a shortage of forage. The aim of this study was to analyse the management of cereal crop residues in cotton-cereal farming to optimise their use as feed for draught cattle. A sample of 72 cotton farmers was selected from nine villages in the study area by the stratification method and interviewed using a semi-structured questionnaire. The quantities of cereal crop residue biomass collected by farmers were assessed directly in the field. The results showed that maize and sorghum stalks were predomin

Ten cows (5 working pairs) were randomly selected from each location so that the total number of obsevation cows was 20 (10 pairs). From each location, 45 breeders were randomly selected as respondents, so that a total of 90 respondents was observed intensively. This study, based on a trip to the Yushu Tibetan Autonomous Region of Qinghai Province, China in August 2018, focuses on the tradition of using wooden nose-rings for managing draught yaks and yak-cow hybrids, still practiced in Tibet. The materials and technology for manufacturing this tool are described, and measurements are provided. I describe variants of the traditional yoke and plow (ard) system used in conjunction with a nose-ring and identify several variants of nose-ring, distinguished by the style of terminus. The present study is the first comprehensive report on diversity, population structure, genetic admixture and mitochondrial DNA variation in South Indian draught type zebu cattle. The diversity of South Indian cattle was moderately high. A significantly strong negative correlation coefficient of -0.674 (P<0.05) was observed between the effective population size of different breeds and their estimated FIS. The genetic structure analysis revealed the distinctness of Kangayam, Vechur and Punganur cattle from the rest of the zebu breeds. The results showed the influence of Hallikar breed in the

Cattle play a pivotal role especially for the rural farmer by providing milk, draught power, meat and serving as an indication of wealth among other roles. Research and development of cattle production especially in communal areas can be a sustainable way to improve the livelihoods of the rural population. Major constraints to communal cattle production include high prevalence of diseases, limited forage and poor marketing linkages. For reasons that include; lack of veterinary clinics and extension services, high costs of drugs and potency of the ethnoveterinary medicines, many farmers have re

Abstract In Egypt feeds and feedstuffs are still in short supply particularly in summer when a high proportion of the winter fodder lands are replaced by the cotton crop. In spite of this livestock continues to form a major part of the agricultural economy. It is estimated that livestock production, including animal power and manure, account for as much as one-third of Egypt’s agricultural output. Historically, animals have been kept mainly for draught power-water lifting, land preparation, transport-as well as for meat and milk, but with the advent and increasing use of tractors and diesel wa
